Teaching English to Chinese Students
This book shares a narrative inquiry study that explores the voices of Chinese students and unveils how they understand their study of English for Academic Purposes (EAP), as part of their higher education (HE) journey in the UK. The book foregrounds the neo-liberalisation of the university and considers visiting Chinese students in this commodified education space. While challenging common misperceptions of Chinese students that result in the negative labelling and homogenisation of this international student cohort, it links the discussion to aspects of Orientalism applied to East Asian students, reportedly still evident in Western universities today. It reviews the main principles of meaning shared across constructionist frameworks, including its ubiquity in grammatical structure, its usage-based formation, and its nature as the output of cognitive representations. It also reviews the importance given to meaning in construction-based explanations of sentence composition, innovative language use, and language change. Paradoxically, the Element shows that there is no systematic framework delineating the rich structure of constructional meaning, which has led to theoretical disagreements and inconsistencies. It therefore proposes an operational model of meaning for practitioners of Construction Grammar. It details the characteristics of a complex interface of semantic, pragmatic, and social meaning, and shows how this framework sheds light on recent theoretical issues. The Element concludes by considering ways in which this framework can be used for future descriptive and theoretical research questions.

The translation of Autism Spectrum Disorder within Spanish and English Children’s Literature
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Interpreting / Translating, grade: 1st Class, University of Newcastle upon Tyne (School of Modern Languages ), course: Modern Languages, Translation and Interpreting, language: English, abstract: In a world built for neurotypical people, children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often overlooked when it comes to literature, both within and outside of the English language. Initial research on the accessibility of diagnostic screening tools for autism in translation, revealed a concerning lack of attention to essential culturally specific contexts. This research initiated questioning regarding the accessibility of other fields of translation, which highlighted a gap in research relating to children's literature about ASD in translation. The aim of this dissertation is to analyse children's literature in translation about ASD and explore the ways in which it reframes cultural context to make it relevant for the target reader. This project will critically analyse approaches of translating literature accurately for the target audience, as well as highlight the increased need for non-verbal description often required when writing for people with ASD. This project adopts an analytic approach, performing a close text analysis on several literary sources including Spanish and English children's literature, and secondary sources. Comparative analyses of the source texts (ST) and target texts (TT) are undertaken using House's Functional-Pragmatic Model (2009), focusing on three primary research questions which have been answered by the end of the dissertation project. The objective of this study is to evaluate the success of cultural and linguistic aspects of preexisting translations, whilst examining the function of literature about autism for children. Ancient Near Eastern scribes from Egypt to Mesopotamia, including Israelite scribes of the Hebrew Bible, create infelicitous or symmetric elements in their textual production. By their form, these elements communicate beyond the textual and semantic levels for rhetorical and literary purposes. "Meta-textual semantics" is a widespread scribal device in the ancient world, and ancient audiences and exegetes (e.g., rabbinic, medieval Jewish and Christian exegetes, and Masoretes) properly appreciated it, but it is underappreciated in modern interpretations of the Hebrew Bible. Using Prov 1:1-7 as a paradigm, Josiah D. Peeler explores elements in Hebrew Jeremiah usually considered secondary because of their odd or well-formed nature, to demonstrate that they exemplify a contextual theme.

Sixty years of Swedish computational lexicography
Swedish computational lexicography has a long history at the University of Gothenburg, both in its primary role as a central aspect of the scientific study of vocabulary and also as an infrastructural component for conducting research based on language data. Starting in the 1960s, the Spr疇kdata research group pioneered corpus-supported lexicography for Swedish, forming the basis for successive editions of two main descriptive dictionaries of contemporary Swedish, SAOL and SO. Language technological lexical resources for Swedish have been developed by the research unit/research infrastructure Spr疇kbanken Text since the turn of the millennium, most recently in the framework of the Swedish FrameNet++ initiative. After two decades of separation, these two largely mutually independently developed strands of computational lexicography have now joined forces under the umbrella of Spr疇kbanken's lexical research infrastructure to advance the field technically, methodologically, and scientifically. How do languages mix? Does it begin in chaos, new migrants and old inhabitants needing a pidgin to communicate? Or does it happen more smoothly, in stages? And what is a prakrit? Why do we hear only of prakrits, and never of pidgins, in South Asia? In Father Tongue, Motherland, Peggy Mohan looks at exactly how the mixed languages in South Asia came to life. Like a flame moving from wick to wick in early encounters between male settlers and locals skilled at learning languages, the language would start to 'go native' as it spread. This produced 'father tongues', with words taken from the migrant men's language, but grammars that preserved the earlier languages of the 'motherland'. Looking first at Dakkhini, spoken in the Deccan where north meets south, Mohan goes on to build an X-ray image of a vanished language of the Indus Valley Civilization from the 'ancient bones' visible in the modern languages of the area. In the east, she explores another migration of men 4000 years ago that left its mark on language beyond the Ganga-Yamuna confluence. How did the Dravidian people and their languages end up in south India? And what about Nepal, where men coming into the Kathmandu Valley 500 years ago created a hybrid eerily similar to what we find in the rest of the subcontinent? One image running through this book is of something that remains even when the living form of language fades. Tucked away in how we think and speak now are echoes of our history, and the story of ancestors who lived hundreds and thousands of years ago.
