Leveraging Relations in Diaspora
This Element expands the horizon of sociopragmatic research by offering a first inquiry into the sociocultural norms that underlie the establishment and maintenance of interpersonal relations in a diasporic context. Based on accounts of the practices that Spanish-speaking Latin Americans engage in pursuit of employment, primarily gathered in life-story interviews, it captures the social reality of members of this social group as they build interpersonal relations and establish new contractual obligations with each other away from home. It examines occupational recommendations as a diasporic relational practice whereby the relationship between the recommender and the recommendee becomes part of the value being exchanged and the moral order on which the practice is established and maintained through an interlocked system of favours. The Element offers new social pragmatics insights beyond the dyad in a contemporary globalised context characterised by social inequality.

Pragmatic Inference
The concept of inference is foundational to the study of pragmatics; however, the way it is theoretically conceptualised and methodologically operationalised is far from uniform. This Element investigates the role that inference plays in pragmatic models of communication, bringing together a range of scholarship that characterises inference in different ways for different purposes. It addresses the nature of 'faulty inferences', promoting the study of misunderstandings as crucial for understanding inferential processes, and looking at sociopragmatic issues such as the role of commitment, accountability and deniability of inferences in interpersonal communication. This Element highlights that the question of where the locus of meaning lies is not only relevant to pragmatic theory but is also of paramount importance for understanding and managing real-life interpersonal communication conflict.

Linguistic Stratigraphy
This book examines the historical linguistic panorama of Western South America, focusing on the minor languages that were partially or fully replaced by the expansion of the Quechuan family through the region. The author presents a coherent and generally applicable framework for studying prehistoric language shift processes and reconstructing earlier linguistic landscapes before significant language spreads ousted former patterns of linguistic diversity. This framework combines toponymic evidence with the analysis of substrate contact effects, and, in some cases, extralinguistic evidence, to create an integrated if incomplete of extinct and undocumented languages. In an authoritative exploration of case studies, concerning Aymara in parts of Southern Peru, Ca簽ar in Ecuador, and Chacha in Northern Peru, the book shows how the identities of lost languages and earlier linguistic panoramas can be reconstructed.
Climate Change. Tragic and comic apocalypse in environmental discourse on Social Media
Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, http: //www.uni-jena.de/ (Department of English and American Studies), course: Text & Discourse Linguistics, language: English, abstract: This paper delves into the highly debated topic of climate change and its communication across social media, particularly on the platform X (formerly Twitter). Recognizing the profound global implications of climate change discourse, the study focuses on linguistic analysis at the lexical level, examining semantic patterns in environmental discourse. The goal is to identify distinctive language devices, including lexemes, phrases, clauses, figures of speech, and idiomatic expressions, and link them to the discourse categories of tragic and comic apocalypse in environmental discourse as defined by Foust and O'Shannon. The analysis involves closely examining selected Tweets from the database, aiming to categorize them based on these discourse frames. The paper outlines the methodology, defines discourse framing and environmental discourse categories, and concludes with a summary of findings and an outlook on communication modalities in the current discourse about climate change on social media
Voices of Man

Global Rhetorics of Science
With this volume, the field of rhetoric of science joins its sister disciplines in history and philosophy in challenging the dominance of Euro-American science as a global epistemology. The discipline of rhetoric understands world-making and community-building as interdependent activities: that is, if we practice science differently, we do politics differently, and vice versa. This wider aperture seems crucial at a time when we are confronted with the limitations of Euro-American science and politics in managing global risks such as pandemics and climate change--particularly in our most vulnerable communities. The contributors to this volume draw on their familiarity with a wide range of global scientific traditions--from Australian Aboriginal ecology to West African medicine to Polynesian navigation science--to suggest possibilities for reconfiguring the relationship between science and politics to better manage global risks. These possibilities should not only inspire scholars in rhetoric and technical communication but should also introduce readers from science and technology studies to some useful new approaches to the problem of decolonizing scenes of scientific practice around the world.
Ethical Dilemmas of Genetic Engineering and Environmental Consequences in Biopunk Eco-Fiction
Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2023 in the subject Literature - Modern Literature, grade: 3, language: English, abstract: The intersection of genetic engineering and environmental themes in biopunk eco-fiction presents a unique and captivating field for exploration. This research proposal aims to investigate the ethical dilemmas arising from genetic engineering practices depicted in biopunk literature, and their potential consequences for the environment. Biopunk, a subgenre of science fiction, often delves into the ramifications of advanced biotechnology and its impact on society and nature. By analyzing the narratives presented in biopunk eco-fiction, this study seeks to deepen our understanding of the complex ethical dimensions surrounding genetic engineering and its implications for the natural world.
The New Challenges of Populist Discourses in Romance Speaking Countries
The aim of this volume is to identify, explore and compare expressions of populism in the Romance-speaking part of the world. The volume includes studies from different academic disciplines such as discourse analysis, cultural and media studies. Populist discourses are generally characterized by a deep polarization of positions and a disproportionate reliance on accusations. Populist discourses frequently reinforce existing antagonisms and undermine the traditional political argumentative style, based on the factual confrontation of opinions in the public space. Populist leaders often present themselves as the unfettered spokespersons of the people with whom they form a community of "us" in the struggle against "them". This accords with the strong polarization mentioned earlier. The rise of populist discourses in many countries over the past decades could be due to changes in political communication. The constant and overwhelming dissemination of information in all types of media, the consequent relativization of truth, as well as a less clear political division on a left-right scale, could favor political alternatives based on personality and the highly polarized messages we see today. The question of how to reach voters in today's media buzz is a much bigger question today than it was a few decades ago, and the exposure of faces and comments has increased exponentially, which in itself can promote a certain kind of politicians. In fact, there is a strong emphasis on the leadership of populist movements, which is also a recurring theme in this book, alongside the impact of the new media landscape on political discourses. In this light, some of the recurring themes in the thirteen studies included in the volume are the denunciation - by populist voices - of the corruption of the so-called elites as well as their inability to solve concrete political and economic problems. It is also about the escalation and reinforcement of populist discourses as an expression - an act - of extreme criticism, even hatred, against traditional political leaders. These populist voices are looking for scapegoats and claiming proximity to the people, represented in the discourse as an authentic and uniform group. Other recurring themes are the emphasis on traditional values, national symbols, ethnicity, and nostalgia for a bygone era, which are effective subjects for eliciting feelings and fostering a sense of togetherness. The interplay between some of these issues is explored in more detail in the book. The chapters of the book indeed show to what extent populist discourses introduce a system based on characteristics such as unilaterality, through the designation of a threat and/or a common enemy, and on the strong focus on the rejection of the legitimacy of the adversary.
The Division of Labor Between Grammar and the Lexicon
Much recent influential work within Generative grammar argues that syntax plays a key role in grammar and meaning composition, whereas the role of the lexicon is minimal. This book provides evidence that supports a more balanced division of labor between syntax and the lexicon in the creation of meaning. The author argues that grammatical theory can only ignore lexical meaning at its own peril and defends a theoretical standpoint which is underrepresented in much of the current work in this area . This book explores a wide range of relevant empirical data and makes a compelling case for a theory that can make adequate predictions about possible linguistic structures by allowing the lexicon and the grammar to dynamically interact and impose restrictions on each other.
Polarity-Sensitive Expressions
Polarity (positive, negative) is one of the most fundamental concepts in the system of language and there are many expressions that are sensitive to polarity. For example, any in English and wh-mo in Japanese appear in negative contexts, but not in positive contexts. While previous studies have shown that polarity-sensitive expressions are a general phenomenon in languages, it has also become clear that there are variations in polarity-sensitive expressions. This volume explores the variations in polarity-sensitive expressions through comparisons between Japanese and other languages, such as English, German, Spanish, and Old Japanese, and examines the environments and contexts in which polarity-sensitive expressions occur, as well as the types of (cross-linguistic) variation allowed. The value of the present volume lies in its inclusion of research papers inquiring into various types of polarity-sensitive expressions, such as negative-, positive-, and discourse-sensitive polarity items as well as their variations. The research indicates new directions for the study of polarity-sensitive expressions in the fields of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, corpus linguistics and psycholinguistics.
Wh-Exclamatives, Imperatives and Wh-Questions
Research on left periphery phenomena has increased in the last 20 years, resulting in consistent studies from a wide range of languages and a fruitful debate on the functional projections within the CP system. Throughout these years, important contributions have been made on Brazilian Portuguese, especially on wh-interrogative sentences, focalization, topicalization and relative clauses. As for exclamative and imperative sentences, however, there is a considerable research gap in all grammatical levels. Regarding interrogatives, semantic and prosodic studies are still lacking (as well as research on the acquisition and processing of these constructions). This collected volume fills some of those gaps, gathering studies on wh-exclamatives, imperatives and wh-questions in Brazilian Portuguese which approach syntactical, semantical and prosodic aspects of these constructions through a rich and yet unregistered set of data. They also deliver novel acquisition and diachronic data that will further both the comprehension of Brazilian Portuguese grammar and the ongoing discussions on left periphery phenomena.
Pragmatics, (Im)Politeness, and Intergroup Communication
This Element shows the basis for pragmatics/(im)politeness to become intergroup-oriented to be able to consider interactions in which social identities are salient or are essentially collective in nature, such as Cancel Culture (CC). CC is a form of ostracism involving the collective withdrawal of support and concomitant group exclusion of individuals perceived as having behaved in ways construed as immoral and thus displaying disdain for group normativity. To analyze this type of collective phenomenon, a three-layered model that tackles CC manifestations at the macro, meso, and micro levels is used. At the meso/micro levels, problematize extant conceptualizations of CC -mostly focused on the macro level and describe it as a Big C Conversation, whose meso-level practices need to be understood as genre-ecology, and where identity reduction, im/politeness, and moral emotions synergies are key to understand group entitativity and agency.

Technology and English Language Teaching in a Changing World
Multilingualism
This textbook takes a broad perspective on multilingualism, using a sociolinguistics and acquisition-informed approach that treats multilingualism not solely as the mastery of two or more well-defined language systems, but rather as a continuum of linguistic repertoires and resources to be used in different settings and combinations. The authors introduce traditional aspects of multilingualism - including historical dimensions, societal and individual multilingualism, aspects of identities, ideologies, education, and language policies - before going on to examine newer manifestations such as multilingualism in migrant and refugee contexts, in new media, pop music and linguistic landscaping, as well as the notion of grassroots multilingualism. This textbook will be an ideal resource for postgraduate students of linguistics and multilingualism, as well as advanced undergraduate students who are looking for a nuanced and holistic approach to the topic.

Unreliable Narration in The Great Gatsby. In Literature and on Screen
Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, http: //www.uni-jena.de/ (Department of English and American Studies), course: Media, language: English, abstract: This research paper delves into the acclaimed work of literary realism, "The Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and its cinematic adaptation by Baz Luhrmann in 2013. Rather than debating fidelity or artistic superiority between literature and cinema, the focus is on exploring adaptations as autonomous artworks. The paper specifically concentrates on the narration in both modalities, recognizing its pivotal role in shaping the plot, events, and audience reception. The narrowed scope centers on the examination of elements of unreliable narration in "The Great Gatsby" and how they are transposed onto the screen in the 2013 adaptation. The methodology involves traversing cinematic and literary studies, beginning with a definition of narration, followed by an analysis of narration in the novel, an introduction to unreliable narration, and a subsequent exploration of unreliable elements in both, the book and the film. The study aims to conclude with a summary, evaluation of findings, and consideration of potential limitations encountered during the analysis.

Exploring Gender Performativity in Selected Works of Willa Cather, Ellen Glasgow and Zora Neale Hurston
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2023 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,5, Northumbria University, language: English, abstract: In this dissertation I will examine the notion of gender performativity within the following literary texts of three famous American authors: Willa Cather's "My Antonia" (1918) and "0 Pioneers!" (1913), Ellen Glasgow's "Virginia" (1913) and "Barren Ground" (1925), and Zora Neale Hurston's "Sweat" (1926) and "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (1937), in this project I will demonstrate how literature shapes, challenge and deconstructs conventional gender norms. These female authors made a significant contribution to American literature in the modern era, particularly by addressing themes of gender roles, social expectations, patriarchy, and female empowerment. Gender identity it is not something fixed, but rather it is culturally and socially constructed that can be performed through repetitive acts and behaviours according to Judith Butler. I will apply gender performativity theory to show how female and male characters in these texts challenge and subvert traditional gender roles, patriarchal orders, and power dynamics of their societies. By doing so, I would argue, the authors question the prevailing gender norms, giving readers an opportunity to explore and understand a different point of view regarding female agency and female empowerment.

Short-Term Student Exchanges and Intercultural Learning
Short-term student exchanges can offer valuable opportunities for intercultural learning and to engage in intercultural communication using English (the language focus in this Element). However, research and educational practices often assume that the most effective intercultural learning occurs through interactions with local individuals in 'target' culture learning and adherence to standard English language norms. These assumptions overlook important learning opportunities from interactions in culturally and linguistically diverse settings as features of many international exchange experiences. This Element proposes a perspective in student exchange research and practice that reflects this diversity and encompasses the intercultural learning model of intercultural awareness, intercultural citizenship education, and Global Englishes.

Creative Classical Translation
This Element surveys transmissions of ancient Greek and Latin texts into anglophone literatures, often straddling boundaries between translational responsibility and adaptive, re-creative textual practices. Attention to manifestations of and reasons for versioning, retranslation, hybridity, and translation as experiment, compels an introductory discussion of evolving tendencies of classical reception; with particular dispositions relating to a sociocultural context such as that of the United States observed in Section 3. The role paratexts play in the dialogue between scholarship, literary art, and performance, is the focus of Section 4, while Section 2 presents readers with a range of English responses to Homer. Creativity through sites and positions of translation is a defining feature of the workings of literary traditions; and of antiquity and modernity, in constant dialogue. This Element explores numerous textual manifestations and reasons for invention, along with integrations of thinking on classical translation over the centuries, helping shape present-day translation studies.
Interpreting as Translanguaging
Drawing on the emerging literature in translanguaging theory and research, the Element provides a comprehensive analysis of the embedded model of translanguaging-in-interpreting and interpreting-in-translanguaging from theoretical and practical perspectives, buttressed by evidence from an exploratory empirical investigation. To achieve this goal, the authors first trace the emergence and historical development of the key concepts and basic tenets of translanguaging and interpreting separately and then combined. This is followed by reviews of relevant literature, synthesizing how translanguaging theories and research methods can be applied in specific domains of interpreting studies, such as community and public service interpreting. An integrated account of translanguaging and interpreting is proposed and elaborated. The theoretical and methodological implications of this integrative perspective are teased out, with a view to illuminating interpreting theory, pedagogy and instruction.
William Butler Yeats as a Hybrid Poet. The Symbolism of Poetry
Seminar paper from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, Justus-Liebig-University Giessen (Anglistik), course: WB Yeats and Symbolism, language: English, abstract: This term paper deals with William Butler Yeats as a hybrid poet. He was always conflicted between his enthusiasm for Ireland and his critical attitude towards the violent confrontation. Notwithstanding, Yeats manages in an impressive way to bring out this ambivalence and to draw attention to this bloody event. While the result is a free and independent Ireland, the bloody road to it was painful. "Easter 1916" is a political poem about sacrifice, change, admiration and immortality. The author wishes to commemorate the admirable sacrifice made by the rebels in 1916 for Irish freedom. Although most of them died, they and their deeds will forever be remembered and passed down through generations, as they are immortal to the Irish. It is not for nothing that Yeats is considered a master of symbolism because the symbols he used in his poems are world-famous. The ideas of his essay "The Symbolism of Poetry" determined and influenced his poetry, such as "Easter 1916". Symbols can have multiple meanings, and thus the mind of the reader is expanded, which is why symbols gain an unlimited influence that goes far beyond the formal nature of their own words. Moreover, "Easter 1916", in a way, marks his shift from Romantic to Modernist poetry. Although some Romantic elements are present in the poem, he nevertheless deals with contemporary politics that reflects the real world.
Exploring Korean Politeness Across Online and Offline Interactions
This open-access edited volume brings together the latest research on Korean politeness (K-Politeness) from multidisciplinary and multimodal perspectives across a broad range of different interactional contexts and communication platforms, both online and offline. The volume examines how Korean language speakers construct, negotiate, and utilize politeness or impoliteness as discursive practices during daily interaction. The studies not only include intimate interactions between family members and friends, but also institutional interactions between business vendors and customers, doctors and patients, talk show hosts and their guests, as well as politicians. The studies include discussions on the perception of Korean (im)politeness of K-wave viewers and fans. The role of media is discussed and how it influences public discourse and speakers' perception and practice of Korean (im)politeness. This text also examines interactions through instant text messages, chat boxes in livestreaming sites, online chat boxes with business vendors, and related communication channels. Although the disciplines and methodologies may vary, the studies are based on empirical research. This volume provides new insights through contributions from researchers of different disciplines, including communications, sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, discourse analysis, and pragmatics; it appeals to students and researchers in these fields.
Legal Categorization of 'Transgender'
This Element analyzes the foundational frame of legal reasoning when courts interpret the 'plain language' and 'ordinary meaning' of terms such as 'sex', 'man' and 'woman'. There is a rich and complicated line of cases on how to define these terms and how to legally categorize transgender people. When dealing with different legal issues, judges need to give a clear 'yes' or 'no', determinate answer to a legal question. Marginal categorizations could be problematic even for experts. It analyses nine decisions that relate to transgender people's workplace protection under Title VII in United States and the right to marry in United Kingdom and Hong Kong. It brings in a historical discussion of the development of interpretative practices of law and legal categorization of transgender individuals across past decades, drawing on the intricate relationship between time and statutory interpretation.

Timeless Joyce
In Timeless Joyce, Asun L籀pez-Varela offers a holistic, dense, and substantial approach to the study of Ulysses, in commemoration of its publication centenary. The author manages to tackle multiple perspectives that pivot around key aspects of Joyce's narrative by structuring her account around the spiral figure. This brilliant design makes it possible to include not only detailed thematic studies, but also to recurrently return to the main research lines proposed, in an easy, smooth, and natural way. Especially relevant are the myth cells revisited, with a perceptive method that allows transcendental appreciation without forgetting the language puns, the metaphysical substratum, and the Joycean ironic groundwork. (Juan Ignacio Oliva Cruz, President of the James Joyce Association of Spain) L籀pez-Varela's volume deserves attention not only for the accumulation of new analytical threads but also for the inspiring spiral framework that shows Joyce's ironic deflective response to the grandiloquent inflation of epic, traditionally performed by myth. The author superbly shows the ambiguities present in Joyce's mythical method, where the spatial and temporal restrictions proper of the vicissitudes of everyday life are simultaneously parodied and given transcendental scope. (Jos矇 Manuel Losada Goya, President of Asteria, Internacional Association of Mythcriticism) 2022 marked the 100th anniversary of the publication of James Joyce's Ulysses. This book is a celebration of Joyce's text and of the aspects that make his masterpiece timeless. Structured under the inspiration of Brancusi's spiral image, Symbol of James Joyce, the volume shows Joyce's play in two movements: a centripetal move towards unity, using myth, analogies and correspondences and a centrifugal force, with a cunning mixture of irony and unanticipated turns, where the dream of unity is shattered and the text resonates in multiple directions, manifesting its diversity through forms of duplicity and double coding. The double spiral movement of Joyce's novel is aimed at contrasting diverse perspectives on existential issues as well as religious, political and even gender aspects. Features such as Joyce's mytho-poetics, the future of nostalgia, temporal becoming, coincidentia oppositorum, apophatic theology and philosophies of the occult are explored as part of an allegorical dimension of myth that simultaneously seeks and refuses holistic unity. Readers are involved in a sort of rite of passage, like Odysseus in his perilous journey, forced to read forwards, backwards and vertically in the fractal structure of the novel through which Joyce achieves its poetics of infinity.
Methodology in Politeness Research
This book presents overviews on the specific methods for the study of verbal politeness, which is deeply and constantly involved in our social life. The text offers an original and specific synthesis of traditional and innovative methods for the study of politeness as we conceive it today: as a complex system between the individual microcosm (psychological and cognitive) and the social macrocosm (cultural and relational). The author addresses theoretical and academic issues while exploring various critical points for the future of politeness studies. The reader is provided with a coherent network, which crosses between theory, methods and tools for research. The network results in a wide range of model research that facilitates the practical understanding of the potential for each data collection technique. This monograph offers representative examples of studies of various languages and cultures and appeals to students, researchers and professionals within the field.
Authenticity in Christopher Isherwood's Autobiographical Works. A Comparative Analysis
Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Centre for British Studies), course: British Studies, language: English, abstract: This study delves into the complex world of Christopher Isherwood's autobiographical works, exploring how he constructs authenticity and how readers are expected to respond. Isherwood, known for his candor and professional charm, often relied on his journals for inspiration in his novels, blurring the lines between fiction and autobiography. Drawing from prevalent theories on autobiography, this research focuses on Isherwood's autobiographical novel "Lions and Shadows" (1938), his family memoir "Kathleen and Frank" (1971), and his autobiography "Christopher and His Kind" (1976). Through a comparative analysis of these texts, we aim to uncover the extent of Isherwood's "apparent candour" and shed light on his unique approach to authenticity in autobiographical storytelling.
Domestic Workers Talk
Set in a multilingual cleaning company that serves Anglophone customers in the upper-(middle) class suburbs of New York City, this book presents an ethnographic study into power, language policy and communication from the perspectives of the Brazilian-American employer as well as the company's Hispanophone and Lusophone employees. Power asymmetries in internal communication demonstrate the employer's legitimated domination over her employees and her L1 Portuguese as a form of linguistic capital. Employees' resourcefulness and multicompetence - rather than quantifiable levels of English-language proficiency - determine the extent to which they rely on language brokering to facilitate communication with their customers, directly impacting their agency. The book contributes to current debates on extra-linguistic modes of communication in multilingual settings and thematic analyses of care work, migration, communication and the role of English.
