Grotesque and Performance in the Art of Aubrey Beardsley
"If I am not grotesque, I am nothing."This insightful study illuminates previously unexplored aspects of Aubrey Beardsley's relationship to the grotesque and his use of media, particularly his manipulation of the periodical press. For the first time and with keen intelligence, Evanghelia Stead fully reveals the aesthetic importance of Beardsley's Bon-Mots vignettes, as well as the relationship between Darwinism, his innovative foetus motif, and Decadence itself.Beautifully illustrated throughout, the book calls on histories of culture and aesthetics to show how the artist reworked traditional imagery and manipulated it beyond recognition-revealing for instance the influence of cathedral grotesques on Beardsley's own grotesque performances. Stead also demonstrates his major impact on Italian, French, American and German creative minds through the periodical press.Rich in original thought and detailed, comparative analysis, this book is an invigorating and enlightening read for scholars of Aubrey Beardsley, as well as for anyone interested in nineteenth-century visual culture, art history, art criticism, print culture, illustration, grotesque iconography, and cultural history.

For All
In this international anthology we showcase works by 87 poets and 10 artists, from 20 countries, in 10 languages, on the theme For All. On the cover we offer a red carnation to represent both resistance and community. These poems and art works explore and celebrate what is at stake for all of us and what we can do together. As artists we refuse to cede the future to the billionaires and dictators, to the power of capital and those who wield it. Poetry provides an essential voice to address the struggle to preserve democracy by standing together. Democracy is in danger all over the world. Every day communities and habitats are destroyed. Sexism, classism, and racism flourish. Democracy as we know it is not serving the needs of large numbers of people. The oligarchs, much smaller than 1%, make the key decisions and choose to create a world in which many people starve and many work ceaselessly but cannot pay their bills. A planet where climate change continues to warm and weather goes wild. Wars, starvation, loss of habitat, mass migrations all result from actions of the oligarchs but are left for other people to suffer. The ruling elite care only about power, tolerate the appearance of democracy as long as it does not threaten their power, and fund populist authoritarian politicians toward perpetuating those ends. But a new generation has risen up to protest war and the slaughter of innocents. Poets, artists and all creative people can seize this opportunity to focus our powers toward creating a more just and enlightened world For All. We ask that you walk thoughtfully through these pages and take whatever inspiration you may find. "All for one and one for all." D'Artagnan.

Lucy R. Lippard on Pop Art
Pop Art epitomized the free spirit of the 1960s, blending carnival-like qualities with bold colors and monumental scale, but based on a tough, no-nonsense, no-refinement standard appropriate to its time. Renowned art critic and curator Lucy Lippard's classic, contemporaneous study enriches our understanding of this groundbreaking art movement.Across three chapters, the author first outlines the phenomenon of Pop Art, its antecedents and related styles ranging from folk art, Surrealism and Dada as well as the work of key artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. She then focuses on Pop Art in New York, discussing key iconic figures including Claes Oldenburg, Jim Dine, Roy Lichtenstein, James Rosenquist, Andy Warhol, and Tom Wesselmann, who appropriated advertising, comics, and the conventions of commercial art and its specific techniques. Finally, Lippard provides an extensive overview of Pop Art's impact and evolution across Europe, particularly in France, Germany, Italy, and Canada, and so touches upon the work of Christo, Mimmo Rotella, and many others, including Niki de Saint Phalle and Joyce Weiland, whose work are now experiencing a resurgence of interest.
The Garden
Seeking to ride out the chaos of the pandemic in more familiar territory, the author and his partner secured a seat on one of the last Australian Government flights out of Mumbai, a decision that would see them separated for almost a year. Within a few months, having left the twenty-fourth floor of an apartment building in Mumbai, he passed through a half-dozen dark and empty airports to finally wash-up in a garden in Antananarivo, Madagascar. Isolating from the world, his partner and ultimately himself, he says, "I tried to make some sense of it in this collection of text based drawings/paintings. They seem to me the residue of a thirty-five year search for a place to call home, without ever really finding the right word for it."

Napoleon in Russia
Napoleon Bonaparte織s campaign in Russia in from 24 June to abt 5 December 1812 remains one of the greatest military disasters of all times. The hot weather and the forced marches making the soldiers sick reduced Napoleon織s Grande Arm矇e fom abt 450.000 to only 120.000 a the time he reached Moscow. More famous is the bitter winter during the withdrawal which reduced his fighting force to an est 1.500 and only abt 100.000 made it back. Napoleon didn織t have the supplies the Russians had. The great battles were few as the Russians avoided most of them and instead they employed scorched earth and guerilla tactics to beat Napoleon. His Russia campaign would lead to the end of his grip on Europa. The campaign is full of great names on both sides and it is impossible to do justice to them all in a small book like this one. Many famous artists have depicted this epic war. We hope the readers will enjoy our selection of art work.
Being a Painter
The book portrays the journey of artist Xie Shan, who dedicated his life to painting despite suffering from cornea thinning (keratoconus), auditory hallucinations and congenital schizophrenia. As a self-taught artist, Xie Shan's exploration was purely based on visual experience. As a result of a rare sight condition and a cornea transplant in his early 20s, he attempted to capture subject matter with brilliant colour and extraordinary plasticity on canvas. Xie Shan had a challenging career path but remained resilient and persisted through the difficulties. His art style and sensibility go against the conventions of the modern art world, making his work original and unique. The book's visual and narrative potential make it a contemporary revelation of the myth of being a painter.

Book of Games
Carsten H繹ller invites readers to disrupt their daily lives with 336 mind-expanding diversions. They can be played alone, in pairs or in teams, in the street, in bed, on a train, wherever. No props or materials are needed. Just one body, all senses and a willingness to try something new, that's possibly conceptually or physically challenging, but guaranteed to entertain and to widen the player's horizons. Some games are more obviously daring than others - unexpectedly shouting 'bang!' when your driver's reversing into a parking space is sure to elicit a reaction - but that's absolutely the point. Other games involve covertly dropping strange phrases into conversation, executing somersaults (without practice), or plucking hairs from your opponent's head while they stay poker-faced.H繹ller's scientific professional background informs his keenness to create what he calls Influential Environments. He wants to tease the brain while testing its limitations, through activity and passivity, agency and inertia. He conceived his first game with a group of friends in 1992, during a tedious dinner after an exhibition opening. Since then, he has collected and invented ideas, inspired by friends, life, the Surrealists, and Arthur Rimbaud. All games are illustrated with commissioned or pre-existing artworks and photographs. We find portraits by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, August Sander, and Nan Goldin next to paintings by Salvador Dal穩; snapshots of Joseph Beuys plus son and Donna Haraway plus dog next to appointed pieces by Christine Sun Kim and Anri Sala; film stills by Chantal Akerman, extracts from Shakespeare as well as treasures from H繹ller's personal archive--and his mother's. Edited by Stefanie Hessler and Hans Ulrich Obrist, this book encourages readers to engage in playful yet cerebral experiments that will leave them with a sense of wonder, disorientation, and a subtle smirk on their face.
Africatown Omotunde Mural. 35000 Years of African History
The Benin-Cameroon artist, Jeki Esso, aka Jeki, has created a visual time capsule. Using pictograms, symbols, patterns, mathematical equations, words in African languages, renderings of African architecture, and colors, she invites the viewer cross historic, cultural, linguistic, geographical, philosophical, and even ideational boundaries. The reason why Jeki Esso has designed this mural is for it to serve as a visible symbol of contemplation, resilience, resistance, and connections. It is intended to provoke contemplation, instruct the unenlightened, facilitate reflection about the African roots of Africatown and the African American diaspora, and remind us about the veracity of what the continent of Africa has contributed to the artistic, intellectual, scientific, mathematical development of the world-centuries before Europeans. It is evidence of our humanity as Africans and African Americans. But mostly, through her art, Jeki has shared a bit of herself, her country, her worldview, her creativity as an African woman artist, with us, her kinfolk, in the United States.Irma McClaurin, PhD.Africatown Omotunde Mural. 35000 Years of African HistoryJeki EssoForeword by Dieudonn矇 Gnammankou, Ph.D.Afterword by Irma McClaurin, Ph.D.DAGAN Editions & Dagan Panafrican Press Group, October 2024

Style and Meaning in Late Antique Art
How do we best see and understand the art of late antiquity? One of the perceived challenges of so doing is that this is a period whose visual production has been defined as stylistically abstract and emotionally spiritual, and therefore elusive. But this is a perception which - in her path-breaking new book - Sarah Bassett boldly challenges, offering two novel lines of interpretative inquiry. She first argues, by focusing on the art of late antiquity in late nineteenth-century Viennese intellectual and artistic circles, that that period's definition of late antique form was in fact a response to contemporaneous political concerns, anticipating modernist thinking and artistic practice. She then suggests that late antique viewers never actually abandoned a sense of those mimetic goals that characterized Greek and Roman habits of representation. This interpretative shift is transformative because it allows us to understand the full range and richness of late antique visual experience.

Foreign Attachments
In this beautifully constructed Russian doll of a novel, two Australian women leave their homeland in search of a room of their own in which to forge their art. Stella Bowen studies painting in London where she meets, among other literati, wild Ezra Pound, and the bearlike, charming Ford Madox Ford with whom she lives in the countryside, has a child and enters the glittering life of Paris in the 1920s where she struggles to survive and paint, and where the likes of Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas and Jean Rhys dance in and out of her life. A century later, Neve leaves Australia for life in Paris with the suave Antoine to write her novel on Bowen's life. Each woman is captured by love and confronted with betrayal and obstacles in the pursuit of her art.By skilfully building a novel within a novel, Roslyn McFarland's Foreign Attachments delivers a deeply entertaining and life-filled portrait of the lives of creative women in a novel as richly rendered as one of Bowen's exquisite paintings.JO GARDINER
Heritage at War
Culture in CrisisThe right of access to, and enjoyment of, cultural heritage is enshrined in human rights norms and the devastating effects of armed conflict on cultural heritage are well documented, with the deliberate destruction of cultural heritage having been an integral part of warfare throughout history. Culture now, once again, finds itself on war's frontline Marking the 70th anniversary of the Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, and in the current context of devastating conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza and Sudan, among others, Heritage at War - Plan and Prepare brings together military, academic, and heritage practitioners' voices from across the Euro-Atlantic, North Africa and the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific to explore how lessons learned from past experiences of conflict can inform approaches to the safeguarding of cultural heritage today. Emerging from and building upon an international conference held at the V&A Museum in February 2023, the book addresses how the military, the heritage sector and other stakeholders in Human Security can, and must, collaborate to give primacy to people and protect tangible and intangible cultural heritage under attack. The volume's case studies highlight interdisciplinary efforts to protect heritage in conflict zones, drawing out guidance for those working in the Heritage Sector in these contexts, with specific relevance to those engaged in cultural heritage protection and those working in related interdisciplinary fields. Reviewing the historic relationship between heritage and armed conflict, and offering lessons for present-day practitioners, Heritage at War shows how, in different contexts, heritage can be a catalyst and target of conflict, an obstacle to stabilisation, and yet also a potential vector of peace-building and the return to normality.

Entering Heaven on Earth
Our Catholic churches are filled with an abundance of signs and symbols, some of which you may have never noticed or understood. The sacred art, architecture, and artifacts of a church building proclaim the Real Presence of Christ, God dwelling among us in the Blessed Sacrament. The saints portrayed within a church are witnesses to Eucharistic living, and we can identify them through various symbols that tell us about their lives, their works, and their witness to the living presence of God.In Entering Heaven on Earth, Fr. Lawrence Lew, OP, shows you how to decode the signs and symbols found in our churches and to identify the saints depicted in them. This richly illustrated book filled with photographs the author has taken in churches from around the world will help you to see the churches you worship in or visit from a fresh perspective and to remember the true purpose of a church building.A church is a visible expression of heaven come down to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. It is always, first of all, a place for the Christian people to assemble for the sacred liturgy and celebrate the Eucharist. The beauty of nature, the creativity and craft of mankind, the good works of the virtuous and the just are all brought together in a church building to remind us of the graced activity of God, who is present to make us holy and draw us into a deeper union with him.
The Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish Painting
This beautifully illustrated, expansive overview of Dutch and Flemish art during the 17th century illuminates the creative achievements of one of the most important eras in western art. The Golden Age in Holland and Flanders roughly spanned the 17th century and was a period of enormous advances in the fields of commerce, science--and art. Still lifes, landscape paintings, and romantic depictions of everyday life became valued by the increasingly wealthy merchant classes in the Dutch provinces, while religious and historic paintings as well as portraits continued to appeal to the Flemish patronage. The Golden Age brought us Rembrandt, Vermeer, Rubens, and Van Dyck, but it was also the period of Frans Hals' revolutionary portraiture, Adriaen Brouwer's depictions of the working class at play, Jan Brueghel's velvety miniatures, and Hendrick Avercamp's lively winter landscapes. Norbert Wolf applies his vast understanding of the interplay between history, culture, and art to explore the forces that led to the Golden Age in Holland and Flanders and how this period influenced later generations of artists.Accompanied by luminous color illustrations, Wolf's accessible text considers the complex political, religious, social, and economic situation that led to newfound prosperity and, thus, to an enormous artistic output that we continue to marvel at and enjoy today.
Maruja Mallo and the Spanish Avant-Garde
The first book in English on Maruja Mallo, this volume is an insightful examination of the life and work of this seminal artist of the Spanish avant-garde. Previously sidelined by a culture that treated women as "insider-outsiders" and by her own mythmaking, Mallo no longer can be viewed as simply a muse to famous counterparts such as Salvador Dal?- and Federico Garc?-a Lorca; her role has been re-contextualized to demonstrate that she was a driving force in the flowering of Spanish culture through the 1920s and 1930s. The analysis of Mallo's unique life and extraordinary art is set against the complicated social and political backdrop of interwar Madrid. This book highlights the struggle of Mallo and other women artists against the rampant misogyny of both Spanish culture and the avant-garde community of the time. The effects of the Spanish Civil War are also analyzed-in Mallo's case, Franco's victory forced her into exile in South America for almost 30 years, with profound effects on her art and her life. Added to this rich context, the author's numerous interviews with members of the Mallo family provide essential new background material. Maruja Mallo and the Spanish Avant-Garde recasts this artist as a vital figure in the heretofore all-male establishment of the Spanish artistic vanguard.
