Dick Watkins
Dick Watkins belongs to the generation of artists whose careers were launched at the high-flying end of American-based Abstraction. Almost immediately he faced up to the abrupt end of the Modern era. Culture was no longer to be framed by 'progress'. In 1970, taking stock of the situation, he announced that he was a copyist, there being no such thing as a new creation in art, shaped as it was by visual languages. Nor did he intend to limit his curiosity about the relation of art to life by restricting himself to a 'personal' style. There followed a long and passionately adventurous exploration into many subjects and styles, during which Watkins was often the first to signal changes taking place in Western culture. The result is that for half a century he has been a major, if controversial figure in Australian art.

The Joys of Poverty When You Don't Know You're Poor
The purpose of this book is to present an unabashed view of a way of life that has been largely forgotten within a relatively short period of time. Even though such a life is not realistic in today's fast-paced society, I think it is worthwhile to revisit that era not just to provide a sense of what it was like to live at the time, but also to gain an understanding of the mindset of the people of that time. I was one of those people.

The Museum
Celebrates the resilience of American cultural institutions in the face of national crises and challenges On an afternoon in January 1865, a roaring fire swept through the Smithsonian Institution. Dazed soldiers and worried citizens could only watch as the flames engulfed the museum's castle. Rare objects and valuable paintings were destroyed. The flames at the Smithsonian were not the first--and certainly would not be the last-- disaster to upend a museum in the United States. Beset by challenges ranging from pandemic and war to fire and economic uncertainty, museums have sought ways to emerge from crisis periods stronger than before, occasionally carving important new paths forward in the process. The Museum explores the concepts of "crisis" as it relates to museums, and how these historic institutions have dealt with challenges ranging from depression and war to pandemic and philosophical uncertainty. Fires, floods, and hurricanes have all upended museum plans and forced people to ask difficult questions about American cultural life. With chapters exploring World War I and the 1918 influenza pandemic, the Great Depression, World War II, the 1970 Art Strike in New York City, and recent controversies in American museums, this book takes a new approach to understanding museum history. By diving deeper into the changes that emerged from these key challenges, Samuel J. Redman argues that cultural institutions can--and should-- use their history to prepare for challenges and solidify their identity going forward. A captivating examination of crisis moments in US museum history from the early years of the twentieth century to the present day, The Museum offers inspiration in the resilience and longevity of America's most prized cultural institutions.

The Black Ink Colouring Book
YOUR NOVEL ART WORKThis book is the art-companion companion to the novel "The Black Inked Pearl", which tells a version of the age-old myth of a girl rejecting her lover only to find he is the only one she wants. It is also a colouring book with images for YOU to colour in using YOUR imagination. On some pages it builds on the traditional form of colouring - inside firm lines - on others it calls, more daringly, on the modern technology of blurred and rubbed colouring, The images are by the distinguished silk-artist Rachel Backshall who also illustrated other Ruth Finnegan books ("Oh Kate! Your first counting book", "The Magic Adventure, Kris and Kate build a boat", and "Pearl of the seas"). Inside the book are other images from her original silk paintings, converted to black and white for your imaginative colours. And there is more - think COLOUR SECRETS: What are these colours that we see and try to copy? How are they made? How did they start and what (if anything) do they mean? Are colours perhaps only a trick of the light or of the way our eyes see, not really of any independent existence? But to us as people, as artists, they are real enough, something with which we engage every day. Learn in this book about the importance of colour for us as human beings living our lives in this world: the active uses and meanings of colours and how we engage with them. So here's to great, mindful, colouring.AWARD WINNING AUTHOR: Ruth Finnegan has won many accolades including a Readers Favourite 2024 SILVER AWARD and a Literary Titan Gold Award. These are bestowed on books that are found to be perfect in their delivery of original content, utilizing fresh themes to convey innovative ideas, and which deftly use elegant prose to transform words into expertly written literature.

The Scenic Places of the Tōkaidō Processional Tōkaidō
The Scenic Places of the Tōkaidō (Tōkaidō Meisho no Uchi) by 17 artists is based on the list of prints on the Kunisada Project website run by Dr Horst Graebner with a total of 162 ukiyo-e prints. It is a fantastic work, an effort presumably directed by the shogun's political office to commemorate his attempt to preserve a joint rulership with the emperor over Japan. It differs from the many other Tōkaidō series by the large number of prints, at least three times as many in a series. If differs by the number of people in the prints - the procession consisted of 3,000 people. It also marks the end of the ukiyo-e Tōkaidō, where the forced travel of the damiyō - sankin-kōtai - had contributed so much to the economic and cultural development along these roads and indeed to the whole print making industry. The shogun abolished sankin-kōtai in 1862.The ukiyo-e series 'Tokaido meisho-no-uchi' from 1863 is often called a teamwork of different publishers and artists. It would likely be more precise to call it a coordinated project by the shogun's political staff that was rebuffed by political competitors. In 1863 the Tokugawa shogunate was in a state of final weakness and dissolution. It was a somewhat desperate attempt to ensure a joint rule by the emperor and the shogun, or their respective staffs.
Voicetracks
The affects, aesthetics, and ethics of voice in the new materialist turn, explored through encounters with creative works in media and the arts. Moved by the Aboriginal understandings of songlines or dreaming tracks, Norie Neumark's Voicetracks seeks to deepen an understanding of voice through listening to a variety of voicing/sound/voice projects from Australia, Europe and the United States. Not content with the often dry tone of academic writing, the author engages a "wayfaring" process that brings together theories of sound, animal, and posthumanist studies in order to change the ways we think about and act with the assemblages of living creatures, things, places, and histories around us. Neumark evokes both the literal--the actual voices within the works she examines--and the metaphorical--in a new materialist exploration of voice encompassing human, animal, thing, and assemblages. She engages with artists working with animal sounds and voices; voices of place, placed voices in installation works; voices of technology; and "unvoicing," disturbances in the image/voice relationship and in the idea of what voice is. She writes about remixes, the Barbie Liberation Organisation, and breath in Beijing, about cat videos, speaking fences in Australia, and an artist who reads (to) the birds. Finally, she considers ethics and politics, and describes how her own work has shaped her understandings and apprehensions of voice.
The Jaguar Portals
The Jaguar Portals is a collection of paintings and their story which invites viewers into a profound realm. Here the jaguar symbolizes the awakening of dormant energies within the self. In many cultures, the jaguar is a guardian of the unsee, a creature that moves fluidly between worlds. This collection calls upon that spirit, urging the observer to remember the subtle energies that permeate existence. the jaguar's gaze both fierce and wise, serves as a reminder to look beyond the surface, to see past the mere objectivity of art, and to engage with the deeper currents of its proposed journey. The Awakening is an invitation to reconnect with those primal, intuitive forces that have long been overshadowed by the chaos of modern life. this collection of artwork challenges the viewer to open themselves to a new level of consciousness, one that recognizes the interconnectedness of all things and the illusions that often cloud our perception.

Munsell's Colour System
This comprehensive guide to colour science presents A. H. Munsell's foundational texts on colour theory and practice in a true celebration of both art and science. Albert Henry Munsell was a pioneer of colour theory. His Colour Notation established theories for categorising colour around three dimensions: hue, value (lightness), and chroma (purity). These elements were proposed to produce any particular colour or differentiate between those of the same character. First published in 1905, Munsell's innovative theory offered insights into colour harmony, relationships, and the psychological impact of colours. It spurred significant advancements in colour science, art, and design, standing as a cornerstone text alongside those published by Michel Chevreul and Ogden Rood. This new edition from Art Meets Science combines Munsell's seminal A Colour Notation with all fifteen full-colour plates from Atlas of the Munsell Color System, an introduction by Munsell, and an essay on colour by Bonnie E. Snow. An essential colour manual for those studying colour theory or with an interest in colour application, colour behaviours, and the history of colour theory.

Japanese Art of Extraordinary Beings
Demons, sorcerers, ninjas...explaining the origins of Japan's dark heroes from the perspective of Japanese art.In many "dark fantasy" manga and anime, which are hugely popular today, characters use extraordinary abilities to carve out their destiny. In Japanese art, too, characters who can be seen as prototypes of those manga and anime characters with extraordinary abilities, such as sorcerers or samurai who control magical beasts, have often been depicted. There are also works here and there, such as giants who slay demons and eat humans, or people whose hands stretch, that are reminiscent of world famous artworks. This timeless collection focuses mainly on creatures with "extraordinary abilities" who appear in ghost stories and legends from the Edo period and explains the current trends behind anime and manga.
The Story of Paulene Bramble
An intimate tale of the road travelled by former slaves, the poorest of the poor, the disenfranchised, and the all but dehumanized of the Caribbean, in the hope for their humanisation. This book is a telling biography of the lives of people who despite the seeming eternal bleeding from the wounds of hundreds of years animalisation imposed upon them, being terrorised, brutalised and stigmatised, found the courage and determination, not just to survive, but to challenge that which seemed insurmountable. It tells of a time and place when hope and faith were the only assets of the weak, and a better tomorrow was but a mystical dream, yet these people had an undying will to uphold their humanity. All of this is personified in the life of its chief protagonist, Paulene Bramble.

The Day of the Dead
A tribute to Mexico's most important holiday, this extraordinary and definitive volume documents the immense creativity displayed by this popular annual celebration. While there have been other books about the Day of the Dead, most are long out of print and aridly academic. This book features both exceptional "traditional" Indigenous material--such as vibrant folk art and crafts, flamboyant costumes and masks, special food and drink--but also a much more funky, modern approach that blends lively music and dance, colorful parades, cutting-edge contemporary street art, and a festive atmosphere that engages all of the senses with handmade altars, flowers, painted skulls, toys, paintings, murals, and other art objects. Featuring hundreds of specially commissioned photographs and voluminous in-depth research, the book is lavishly illustrated and designed with an aesthetic that draws on both traditional material as well as Mexico's contemporary street art style. Blending visual elements inspired by the country's pre-Hispanic heritage, European influences, and modern art trends, the book explores the evolution of the Day of the Dead and the special role it plays. This book is the definitive, authentic resource for all things Day of the Dead.
The Magic of Chelsea 2024
We are delighted to bring you our next and latest edition of the 'Magic of Chelsea' 2024.As with our previously published Magic of Chelsea books, this one is also published with those in mind who cannot visit the event but would love to, and keeping in mind those who did visit the show and want to cherish their memories, so we are bringing this book to you.Unlike many other years, the weather was cold, windy, and wet. With so many summer clothes packed and unable to be worn, I went to my favourite store to buy warmer things. We were lucky as our tickets for Chelsea this year were bought later than usual. With the first few days of the opening of Chelsea being wet, our visiting day was at least dry...It was a fun day with lots of happy people enjoying not only the dryer weather but the camaraderie and enjoyment of the moments; the different stands and exhibits were evident. With enthusiasm and excitement filling the air, we were out to have a good time.It was busy with crowds, possibly because there were more people than usual on the previous bad weather days! Regardless, with patience and persistence, we achieved our goal of accessing almost a thousand photographs for this latest edition of the 'Magic of Chelsea...'From beautiful floral displays, different flowers, and plants in the Great Pavilion to outstanding pieces of creative sculpture, all were displayed at this year's Chelsea Flower Show.As a lover of art in modern and traditional forms, I marvelled at some interesting sculptures. The use of ovals, rounds, and geometric forms was evident, especially in the work exhibited, and the encouragement shown to young artists still finding their way, as in the work presented by Guruve. While every stand presented a feast of colour, difference, and new, seeing the traditional wildflowers featured on some of the stands and the joy of individual flowers or mass celebrations within the flower colour and different varieties brought to the visitors was stimulating. It is only on reflection and by working on this book that I celebrate the treasured moments spent and the gratitude now felt, and the nostalgia of the time becomes one of life's precious memories. I, too, know that this book, by turning the pages and feasting your eyes on the photographs, will leave you with the feeling of peace, enjoyment, and satisfaction that I have felt during its writing. Please also see our Magic of Chelsea Diary, Notebook, and Calendar; this creates a full set of exciting and different book ideas for cherished gifts.Christine
German Colonialism in Africa and its Legacies
Germany developed a large colonial empire over the last thirty years of the 19th century, spanning regions of the west coast of Africa to its east coast and beyond. Largely forgotten for many years, recent intense debates about Africa's cultural heritage in European museums have brought this period of African and German history back into the spotlight. German Colonialism in Africa and its Legacies brings much-needed context to these debates, exploring perspectives on the architecture, art, urbanism, and visual culture of German colonialism in Africa, and its legacies in postcolonial and present-day Namibia, Cameroon, and Germany. The first in-depth exploration of the designed and visual aspects of German colonialism, the book presents a series of essays combining formal analyses of painting, photography, performance art, buildings, and space with the discourse analysis approach associated with postcolonial theory. Covering the entire period from the build-up to colonialism in the early-19th century to the present, subjects covered range from late-19th-century German colonial paintings of African landscapes and people to German land appropriation through planning and architectural mechanisms, and from indigenous African responses to colonial architecture, to explorations of the legacies of German colonialism by contemporary artists today. This powerful and revealing collection of essays will encourage new research on this under-explored topic, and demonstrate the importance of historical research to the present, especially with regards to ongoing debates about the presence of material legacies of colonialism in Western culture, museum collections, and immigration policies.
