Taizo Yamamoto
Exquisitely detailed drawings offer a "field guide" to ubiquitous but overlooked elements of Vancouver's urban landscape. Three series of intricate graphite drawings depict, with arresting realism, real-world examples of assembled, grown, and built objects common to distinct milieus of Vancouver: the shopping carts piled high with belongings that clatter along sidewalks in the downtown core; the long, high hedges that insulate single-family homes from the din of arterial traffic; and the sculptural lions placed for good luck atop fenceposts in front of many homes, especially on the city's east side. In creating snapshots and then laborious drawings of these objects, Taizo Yamamoto, the principal of Yamamoto Architecture, was driven by a fascination with how the recurrence of these seemingly mundane objects speaks to omnipresent issues of housing unaffordability, densification, and the aspirations of diasporic communities--concerns that have an uneasy relationship to celebrated narratives of Vancouver but play a prominent role in residents' everyday lives. To this work he brings not just sustained careful attention but an architect's eye for details both structural and textural, resulting in immersive, richly nuanced drawings. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) continues to fascinate even today, more than 200 years after his death. His legacy is shown in beautiful paintings. He was an unrivalled general, although he did make occasional mistakes both on the tactical and the strategic level - the most significant was his attack on Russia, which annihilated most of his Grande Arm矇e and led to his downfall. One of the most fascinating periods of his car矇er was his expedition to Egypt 1797-1801 and the most important incident here was the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, which allowed the deciphering of the Egyptian old writing, the hieroglyphs. The Muslims had chopped it up and used it as building material at Fort St Julien. This workbook invites readers to do their own short art analysis, historical analysis and write it down as notes on the blank pages next to the artwork. When the Enlightenment thinker Gotthold Ephraim Lessing wrote his treatise Laocoon: An Essay on the Limits of Painting and Poetry in 1766, he outlined the strengths and weaknesses of each art. Painting was assigned to the realm of space; poetry to the realm of time. Space and Time in Artistic Practice and Aesthetics explores how artists since the eighteenth century up to the present day have grappled with the consequences of Lessing's theory and those that it spawned. As the book reveals, many artists have been - and continue to be - influenced by Lessing-like theories, which have percolated into the art education and art criticism. Artists from Jean Raoux to Willem de Kooning and Frances Bacon, and art critics such as Clement Greenberg, have felt the weight of Lessing's theories in their modes of creation, whether consciously or not.
