Discovering Degas
A beautifully illustrated study of the works by Edgar Degas in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow. In 1874 the first Impressionist exhibition opened in Paris, shocking the art world with a radical new style of painting. Capturing contemporary subjects and everyday life, the 'Impressionist' artists were fascinated by the way light, colour and shape constantly change. But frequent rejection by the Paris Salon jury led some, including Edgar Degas, to look to Britain for a more receptive audience. This richly illustrated book explores the influence of London-based dealers such as Ernest Gambart and Charles Deschamps, and Glasgow-based dealer Alex Reid, who saw the market for French art in Britain, encouraging an early following among British collectors for artists such as Monet, Pissarro, Manet and Degas. William Burrell's first opportunity to see Degas's work on public display in Scotland was at the 1888 International Exhibition in Glasgow. Over a 40-year period Burrell collected more than 20 of Degas's works, far more than any other UK collector, before he and his wife Constance donated their entire collection to the City of Glasgow. This book accompanies a major exhibition at the Burrell Collection, in which all of Burrell's Degas pictures are displayed together for the first time, along with important works from national and international collections. Detailed catalogue entries look at the artist's talent for capturing subjects such as the ballet, racehorses, and women bathing and dressing, giving a greater insight into why British collectors in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries purchased these enduringly appealing works. This is also an important opportunity to understand Degas in his entirety, both as a brilliant artist and as a man whose opinions and ideas would not go unchallenged today.

The Needlepoint of St. James
The Needlepoint of St. James: Fifty Years of "Greater Glory" (134 pages, $36.99) -- The resplendent needlepoint collection of St. James Episcopal Church in Keene, NH, was produced by a community of more than 60 volunteers in the decade between 1972 and 1982. Initially the dream of then Rector, Chandler H. McCarty, the project was accomplished under the guidance and energetic leadership of Mrs. Mary P. Olsen. This book tells the story of the collection, explores what it represents, and examines how it has contributed the life of the community, including as the church has changed and modernized. The book includes a complete photographic inventory of the more than 400 individual pieces and preserves the record of the hundreds of memorial dedications that made the project possible. While serving as a stand-alone inventory, it is also meant as a companion piece to Mrs. Olsen's 1980 book about the mechanics of planning, organizing and directing large needlepoint projects: For the Greater Glory (Seabury Press).

Hokusai織s 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1802 is something completely different from his first square series 1801. Hokusai here employs the horizontal "landscape" format and abt the double size of his square 1801 series. In this series Hokusai focus on wonderful folkloric scenes of ordinary people going about their work, in addition to the travel scenes. Hokusai also begins to develop the landscapes that were to become a standard for later generations of Tokaido series. Hokusai develops the concept of the Tokaido print from cartoon to folklore and the beginning of landscape. He builds on a b/w guide, Tokaido meisho zue from 1797, ISBN 9781956773316. It was a great and early contribution to the growing Tokaido literature, which Hokusai dominated for some 30 years.

Sorolla was not shy about his family as many of his contemporaries were.He sold many paintings that showed his family, especially his daughter Mar穩a was a favorite with the public, and Sorolla jokingly called Mar穩a the breadwinner of the family. He wanted us to share his view of the ideal family as he shared his view of a great and united Spain. Sorolla painted dogs and a cat as pets, as part of the family, superbly catching their soul and character.
Art Teaching and Rurality
This study meets the wishes and desires realised in recording the local culture of the students who live in the rural area of Uberl璽ndia - MG, precisely at Fazenda Floresta do Lobo, Emilio Ribas Municipal School. The cultural diversity of the students in the classroom led to reflective moments and artistic actions involving work that integrates art and culture through the use of the Triangular Approach to develop students' ability to represent, interpret, imagine and understand themselves and intercultural relations. This proposed educational practice for rural schools seeks to relate the educational process to its target audience (students from the 6th to the 9th year of primary school), integrating the students' intercultural relations into art lessons. Contact with different cultures has made teaching art in the school in question a moment of discovery, of building knowledge and concepts in favour of an aesthetic of everyday life in parallel with the observation of regional cultures; it has also contributed to the debate on new conceptions of art teaching practice in a pedagogical proposal that integrates art with culture and rurality.

Arcanum
When we got together to collectively produce our end-of-course work, from the outset we had the intention of producing, through photographic language, a material full of symbolic charge that could produce a unique experience for the reader with the image. Thus, the tarot emerged (remained and lingered) as the object of study for this experimental project. This book, as well as a report on the creative process of the photobook of the same name, is a study of the visual language of the tarot. Based on Didi-Hubermann's methodology for reading images, we remained open to the dialogues established with our repertoires and the different temporalities that emerge from these cards. We also carried out research into the narrative contained in the sequence of major arcana, looking for relationships with Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey, and into the origin of the esoteric symbols contained in the decks, in dialogue with Carl Jung's psychology. This is Arcanum's proposal, which goes through archetypes and mythologies to recount, through the photographs produced, the delights and misadventures of the path of the major arcana and provoke the reader to set out on their own journey.
Art by Literati
Art by Literati examines the integration of calligraphic inscription into the cultural practices of the literati in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century China. Traditionally, inscriptions were created through collaboration between a literatus-calligrapher and an artisan-carver. However, during the Qing dynasty, literati began to take on the role of carvers themselves, challenging the conventional separation between intellectual and manual labor. This book explores how the literati's involvement in inscription carving blurred the cultural and social boundaries between them and artisans, who were becoming increasingly well-educated. Through an analysis of intellectual, aesthetic, and practical aspects of this practice, Art by Literati reveals the complex dynamics of literati and artisanal identities, emphasizing the situational and fluid nature of these roles. The collaborative production of inscribed artifacts serves as a key focus, illustrating how individuals navigated and merged the traditionally distinct domains of literati and artisans. This study highlights the futility of rigidly classifying individuals as either literati or artisans and instead offers a nuanced understanding of their interconnected roles in the cultural landscape of Qing China.*Art by Literati has been awarded the Millard Meiss Publication Fund of CAA and includes color illustrations. Keisai Eisen A Tōkaidō Board Game of Courtesans
What did prostitutes look like in Edo Japan?Keisai Eisen (1790 -1848) is especially known for his bijin-ga, pretty women, and landscapes. He is known for his participation in the series 69 stations of the Nakasendō together with Hiroshige.The series A Tōkaidō Board Game of Courtesans, Fifty-three Pairings in the Yoshiwara used the Tōkaidō with landscape inserts as an excuse to show courtesans and geisha, bijin-ga, to skirt the censorship. They were published 1821-1823. His bijin-ga are considered to be masterpieces of the "decadent" Bunsei Era (1818-1830).Most of them have impressive hairdo with many ornamental hairpins and combs. Their dress is extravagant with beautiful patterns and sublime embroideries. Their faces are elongated squares with long noses and small pouted painted mouths.Courtesans were desirable for their rich and splendid attire, not so much for their beauty and their names were actually like trademarks for a series of girls performing the role with the brothel in question.

Participatory art practices allow members of an audience to actively contribute to the creation of art. Annemarie Kok provides a detailed analysis and explanation of the use of participatory strategies in art in the so-called >long sixtiesdocumenta 5 (Kassel, 1972).
Music and dance as integration for people with disabilities
The Casa de Cultura as a cultural institution works to improve the cultural and educational response it offers to the diversity of people, the research aims at proposing creative workshops for the integration of music and dance from the teaching-learning process in relation to the artistic development of people with hearing impairment in dance creation workshops. Among its results is the determination of the most relevant tendencies of the teaching-learning process of the dance creation workshops. Besides revealing the relationships between theoretical aspects, such as the peculiarities of the social situation of the development of these people, the components to be modified in the socializing agents who participate in the process and the elements to be diagnosed in the House of Culture, which lead to the formation of public awareness towards them. It was applied in the Tomasa Varona House of Culture in Las Tunas, favoring the formation of inclusive values, and the organization for a cultural institution in conditions of educational inclusion.
Capture Japan
Capture Japan investigates the formation of visual tropes and how these have contributed to perceptions of Japan in the global imagination. The book proposes that images are not incidental in the formation of such perceptions, but central to notions about identity, history and memory. From a tentative western ally in 1952 to a 'soft power' superpower with a huge global influence in the 21st century, the book locates questions about Japan in the global imagination to the country's transforming geopolitical position. By adopting an interdisciplinary approach, with a multiplicity of perspectives from around the world, Capture Japan goes beyond binarisms to uncover how images can also produce discourses that challenge, subvert or even contradict each other. The word 'capture' in the title of the book recognises both the deeply problematic role that images have played in relation to colonialism, as well as the potential dominance that visual spectacles can wield in a contemporary context. Diverse essays from a wide range of perspectives investigate the institutional framework that has allowed certain types of images of Japan to be promoted, while others have been suppressed. In doing so, the book points to a vast network of images that have shaped the perception of Japan both from within and from outside, revealing how these images are inextricably linked to wider ideological, political, cultural or economic agendas.
Tracey Emin

The study was conducted during these years in order to present a statistical overview of the precarious labor conditions that the community of performing artists lives day by day, including not only artists, but also technicians and professionals related to artistic creation. Likewise, observations, conclusions and recommendations were included to improve the conditions of the artists and as proposals for the creation and improvement of public policies whose mission is to attack the causes that provoke the state of precariousness in which this important and transcendental community of artists and professionals of the performing arts finds itself. The study was carried out under the leadership of the Observatorio Ciudadano de Arte y Cultura de Nuevo Le籀n, A.C. and sponsored by the Centro de Investigaci籀n, Innovaci籀n y Desarrollo de las Artes of the Universidad Aut籀noma de Nuevo Le籀n.

COVID-19 changed our world.It locked us down and restricted our movement, and isolated us from friends, family, and normality.Liberties and freedoms were taken away, and we needed to find a new way to be, and a new way to connect.I found my connection in nature.The sky was my peace amongst the turmoil.This #skyart project became my way of counting the days, even though I didn't know how many days needed to be counted before the lockdowns ended.It was a horrible time, and it was a beautiful time.
Byzantine Interiors and Decoration
The sources of the present research about Byzantine domestic interiors, textiles and other household items derives from the visual arts and the Byzantine literature. Historians, emperors, travelers, ecclesiastic philosophers, bishops and monks at that time provide also substantial information about domestic interiors, decoration and furniture. The research material concerns the Byzantine era and territory, although it includes a few samples from Byzantine Italy and a few after Constantinople's fall in 29 May 1453 by the Ottomans, which reflect the spirit of Byzantium. It does not include interiors and furniture from Christian Medieval Western Europe because it was mixed with the vigorous artistic culture of Northern Europe or post Byzantine because Baroque elements altered the Byzantine artistic culture. The scope of this book is to introduce mainly the glory of Byzantine interiors, textiles and other house decoration items through Byzantine Art taking into consideration that the Byzantine artist copied on his depictions the existing interiors at that time. These art sources include mosaics, frescos, icons, coins, seals and manuscript illuminations.

Hokusai's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō 1805-1806 is something completely different!It is different from his famous 36 Views of Mt Fuji, which are sublime artistic expressions distilling a long life's work.It is different from much of Hokusai's other well known work, like his 100 Views of Mt Fuji. But in that series Hokusai still retained a lot of the humor and the caricature found here.It is different from the many other well known 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō in that Hokusai does not focus on the landscape and the markers that Hiroshige and others showed.Instead Hokusai focus on the events, the interactions between the travellers, the tales that you will share with your friends when you get back home.
