LAN Zhenghui at Goca Space in Canada
As one of the most influential contemporary Chinese ink artists, Lan Zhenghui has established a cornerstone for the Structural Expression of "Heavy-Ink-Wash"with his unique large-scale paper painting style of Mianshuxie. His artistic pursuit focuses on the exploration of a universal aesthetic structure that draws from the fusion of multicultural integration. His works are treasured by important museums, galleries, and private collectors around the world.Structural Expression is the essence of Lan Zhenghui's Heavy-Ink-Wash, and life consciousness is another important spiritual core of his work. What exactly is the essential role of art? It is this question that has permeated Lan Zhenghui's lifelong pursuit of creative exploration. In Lan Zhenghui's view, good art should not be constrained by external expectations. Society should not demand what artists focus on, critique, or praise certain things, because this would lead artists to functional expression, hindering their pure artistic expression. In Lan Zhenghui's eyes, art is to show the value and significance of life itself.

D羹rer's Knots
An important new examination of Islamic themes in the art of Albrecht D羹rer Albrecht D羹rer's depictions of Muslim figures and subjects are considered by many to be among his most perplexing images. This confusion arises from the assumption that the artist and his northern European contemporaries regarded the Muslim Levant as an exotic faraway land inhabited by hostile adversaries, not a region of neighboring empires affiliated through political and mercantile networks. Susan Dackerman casts D羹rer's art in an entirely new light, focusing on prints that portray cooperation between the Muslim and Christian worlds rather than conflict and war, enabling us to better understand early modern Europe through its visual culture. In this beautifully illustrated book, Dackerman provides new readings of three of the artist's most enigmatic print projects--Sea Monster, Knots, and Landscape with Cannon--situating them within historical contexts that reflect productive collaborations between Christendom and Islam, from the artistic and commercial to the ideological and political. Dackerman notes how Gutenberg's development of printing shares an inextricable relationship to the 1453 Ottoman siege of Constantinople. While Gutenberg's workshop produced a call to crusade and other publications antagonistic to the Muslim East, D羹rer's prints, she shows, instead emphasize instances of affiliation between Christendom and Islam. A breathtaking work of scholarship, D羹rer's Knots shows how the artist's prints of Muslim subjects give expression to the interconnectedness of Christian Europe and the Islamic East.
Hiroshige 53 Stations of the Tokaido Vertical
The official title for this work is "Pictures from the Famous Places of the Fifty-three Stations".Hiroshige produced these prints in 1855 more than 20 years after his first horizontal Hoeidō edition published 1833-34, which is included as thumbnails for comparison. It is instructive to see Hiroshige's use of his now mature experience as he develops the vertical format for the narrative. He does designs as he would do a photograph. He set the standard for landscape photography, without a camera. The Tōkaidō series was the most popular print series ever made in Japan. Hiroshige returned to this theme again and again, with delightful results. It is possible to travel the same road today and some villages are still looking quite like they did back then. The postal stations were constructed between 1601 and 1624.
Hokusai 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1801
Hokusai's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō 1801 is something completely different! It is his first. It is different from his famous 36 Views of Mt Fuji, which are sublime artistic expressions distilling a long life's work.It is different from much of Hokusai's other well known work, like his 100 Views of Mt Fuji. But in that series Hokusai still retained a lot of the humor and the caricature found here.It is different from the many other well known 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō in that Hokusai does not focus on the landscape and the markers that Hiroshige and others showed.Instead Hokusai focus on the events, the interactions between the travellers, the tales that you will share with your friends when you get back home.It was a great and earlier contribution to the Tōkaidō literature. This book is available in print versions from Barnes and Noble Press
Hiroshige Kunisada Kuniyoshi 53 Pairings of the Tokaido
This series, Fifty-three Pairings of the Tokaido Road, Tōkaidō gojūsan tsui, 東海道五十三対, popularly called Pairs Tōkaidō or 53 Parallels for the Tokaido Road, was published in 1845-1846.It is a unique cooperation between three artists: Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kunisada and Utagawa Kuniyoshi and five publishers: Ibaya Kyūbei, (Ibaya Senzabur繫 (Dansend繫)) and Kojimaya J羶bei, Ensh羶ya Matabei, Ebiya Rinnosuke (Kaijud繫) and Iseya Ichibei. The special feature of this "Pairs Tōkaidō" is the pairing of a print for each station with a legend, a wonderful, dramatic, historic or supranatural story. These stories are told partly by the print theme, partly by accompanying text in a cartouche. Sometimes there is a poem. It is a very enjoyable tour!

Hiroshige Famous Views of Naniwa (Osaka)
This book shows the 10 Famous Views Of Naniwa (Osaka) by Hiroshige published in 1834. They are unusual in that they show markets with merchants negotiating. The 8 Views is a Chinese artistic and literary theme developed already in the 10th century and then transposed into Japanese culture, where it developed its own independent expression.Print artist Utagawa Hiroshige as many other Japanese artists took up the issue of 8 Views of Ōmi and again as other Japanese artists he expanded the theme into 8 Views of Kanazawa, 8 Views of Edo Environs and other locations. To give some background there are many other prints especially about rice but also fishing and transportation, and cultural activities afforded by the wealth accumulated by the merchants. It is possible to travel to see the same sites today.

Particles and Waves: Southern California Abstraction and Science
An interdisciplinary guide to the 20th-century Southern California-based artists who investigated phenomena from the realms of optical science, astronomy, aerospace engineering and mathThe synergy between art and science is an age-old tale; artists throughout time, from Leonardo da Vinci to Beeple, have incorporated newly discovered scientific theories and techniques into their practices. The PST ART project Particles and Waves: Southern California Abstraction and Science explores a particularly fecund yet underexplored period in the history of art and science's cross-fertilization. The development of postwar industry and research in Southern California inspired a host of artistic innovations; for decades, abstract artists from the region experimented with color, form and mediums, variously employing ideas or procedures gleaned from the latest developments in physics, astronomy and mathematics.Particles and Waves unites several generations of artists working in diverse materials and styles to visualize light, energy, motion and time. Boasting a gorgeous cover, the volume features a wide array of artists and topics, from Man Ray's paintings of mathematical models to Lee Mullican's computer-inspired abstractions, and from to the West Coast Minimalists and Light and Space artists' (including Mary Corse, Fred Eversley and James Turrell) rigorous studies of light to Bettina Brendel and Helen Lundeberg's investigations of scale through their paintings of subatomic and astronomical subjects.
Hiroshige 53 Stations of the Tokaido Aritaya
The Aritaya Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, Tōkaidō gojūsan tsugi no uchi, 東海道五十三次之内, is one of the most beautiful of Hiroshige's huge production of landscape print series in spite of its small size. It is only abt 10 x 15 cm (with variations), Yotsugiri yokoban (quarter ōban). It is also unusual in that it is a veritable full course and manual in landscape print design. It is a very rewarding study. All the way through Hiroshige follows certain design principles of proportion of elements, arranging elements and views by diagonals and parallels and balancing of color elements.Compared to most of his other Tōkaidō series Hiroshige in Aritaya focus on letting the landscape tell the story instead of letting people or legend do that, although this is not followed through completely.

Eccentric Renaissance
The Byzantine icon has long remained marginal to the study of art's history, only emerging from Giorgio Vasari's condemnation of the gilded, unnatural style of Byzantine painting (maniera greca) when his theories were challenged in the early twentieth century. Eccentric Renaissance focuses on an earlier reaction to Vasari's narrative and discusses three artists who shaped distinct responses to the hegemonic sway of sixteenth-century Italian art. Domenikos Theotokopoulos (more familiarly known as El Greco), Michael Damaskenos, and Georgios Klontzas were contemporary icon painters on the Venetian colony of Crete. Trained in the rich tradition of Cretan painting, these artists differed from their forebears in asserting a self-conscious creativity in their work. They renewed the art of icon painting in the context of Venetian colonialism by reconsidering how their art might address the contemporary world. Deemed eccentric, El Greco's work presented a Greek path contrary to the one promoted in Vasari's history of art. His was an art that was sensual, complex, and difficult. Michael Damaskenos's profound engagement with Venetian painting was mixed with traditional iconic styles, reflecting life in a colony in which Orthodox and Catholic, Greek and Venetian were fluid rather than static descriptors of the self. Georgios Klontzas used his art to confront the horrors of his day. The impending threat of the Ottoman conquest of Crete and the outbreak of plague in 1592 shaped his extraordinary manuscript, Apocalypse and History, that sought to understand these calamities in light of both divine providence and human experience. Each of these artists chose an eccentric point of departure for their work. Greek, colonized, and fearful, they invite us to look again and to look differently at the later sixteenth century.
Hiroshige 53 Stations of the Tokaido Hoeido
Come on the journey from Edo, modern day Tokyo, to Kyoto, as experienced by Utagawa Hiroshige in, when he travelled the road to participate in an important procession in 1832.There were 53 post stations along this important road, apart from the start and terminus, in all 55 prints, which are all here in the order from Edo to Kyoto, In the Hoeidō edition (1833-34).This was the most popular print series ever made in Japan. It was even more popular than Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which had been recently published and which had influenced Hiroshige tremendously (ISBN 9781956215243).It is possible to travel the same road today and some villages are still looking quite like they did back then. Earth, Space and Fractals
With more than 370 pictures, "Earth, Space and Fractals" demonstrates the endless array of fantastic and otherworldly images that can be created with today's fractal generation software. The book is laid out in art-folio style with many of the images occupying a full page to emphasize the beauty and mystery of fractal art. While many books on the subject deal with fractal mathematics, this book is instead a picture album that provides a wide variety of fractal images that, in some cases, are paired with artistically matched photos of objects in the real world. One look at the world around us reveals fractal patterns and images everywhere. The spiral of our galaxy, structure of our nervous system, pattern of veins in a leaf, craggy nature of coastlines, day-to-day changes in weather patterns, ripples of water in a stream, demands of network traffic on the internet, and the ups and downs of the stock market are all examples of the complexity of nature-that which can't be easily defined by the traditional Euclidian math and geometry we learned in school. Fractal math works better in describing and predicting how these disordered and chaotic systems work.In the late 1980's, Benoit Mandelbrot's pioneering work in the science of fractals spawned a huge public response with trendy fractal images appearing just about everywhere-on posters, clothing, mugs, lunch boxes and more. Moving forward to the present day, free and open-source PC-based software programs such as Mandelbulb 3D and JWildfire make it possible to combine fractal types with literally limitless 3D graphical output to generate images that simultaneously look both "real" and imaginary -- and sometimes mystical or ethereal. This book catalogs images drawn from ten years of experimentation with fractal software. The folios group similar images: botanicals and life forms, mechanistic forms, architectural forms, places in and out of this world, ornamental forms and mindscapes. A short introduction precedes the folios while appendices offer insight into the creation of the book.
Art to Make You Smile
This book features a series of paintings by St. Louis, Missouri artist Rich Brooks. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the closure of the Soulard Art Gallery, Rich began painting at a makeshift studio on the sidewalk in front of his Soulard home. Brooks was raised in Keokuk, Iowa. The collection is relatable and was inspired by fairytales, childhood, animals, pop culture, festivals, and holidays. The works place a high value on wit, wisdom, humor, and good old-fashioned fun. It helped to prove Brooks' long-held belief that art has the power to change someone's mood and even transform lives.

Culture of Crisis and Extinction
Culture of Crisis and Extinction: Idealism and Ideology Expressed in Arts and Architectural Forms explores the mythology of cultures in crisis, tracing the symptoms that lead to their destruction and eventual extinction. Through a comprehensive range of research methods and strategies tailored to each fieldwork project, this book investigates cultural phenomena across various environments. It uncovers significant historical meanings that are often hidden or absent from mainstream publications.By analyzing cultural transitions through economic, political, and ethnic lenses across Europe and Asia, the book provides an in-depth examination of collective action and the root causes of cultural crises. Spanning six chapters, it identifies the myths surrounding cultural conflicts and crises of extinction, challenging the assumption that poverty and suffering are definitive indicators of such crises. Instead, it presents cultural extinction as a gradual process stemming from a culture's failure to adapt to its changing environment. The book considers how injustice, economic misalignment, and systemic inequalities-such as unnecessary poverty, illness, and religious discrimination-contribute to cultural collapse. When these injustices become ingrained within a society's institutions, the eventual disappearance of the culture becomes inevitable unless transformative change is initiated.
The Arts of Logistics
We live in a world where nothing is untouched by supply chains-art included. In this major contribution to the study of contemporary culture and supply chains, Michael Shane Boyle has assembled a global inventory of aesthetics since the 1950s that reveals logistics to be a pervasive means of artistic production. The Arts of Logistics provides a new map of supply chain capitalism, scrutinizing how artists retool technologies designed for circulating commodities. What emerges is a magisterial account of the logistics revolution that foregrounds the role played by art in the long downturn of global capitalism. With chapters on art produced from technologies including ships, barrels, containers, and drones, Boyle narrates the long history of art's connection to logistics, beginning in the transatlantic slave trade and continuing today in Silicon Valley's dreams of automation. The global reach of the artists considered reflects the geographies of supply chain capitalism itself. In taking stock of how performance, sculpture, and popular culture are entangled in trade and racialized labor regimes, Boyle profiles influential work by artists such as Christo and Allan Kaprow alongside that of contemporary figures including Cai Guo-Qiang and Selina Thompson. This incisive study demonstrates that art and logistics are linked by the infrastructures and violence that keep supply chains moving.

Fungi Media
Fungi Media positions performance art of bodily mutations as a form of corporeal philosophy. Examining ecologies of rot and fungal decomposition, it outlines a theory of fungosexuality beyond sexual reproduction and binary gender roles. This theoretical perspective repositions queer sexualities in the context of the original meaning of the term 'queer', which is 'rot' - and which stands for a fungi-induced process of decomposition. With this, Fungi Media explores the foundational importance of rot for both breaking down and sustaining bodies, relationships and life as such. The project was developed in a squatted sewage space in London, adopted by the author as a laboratory for mutant performance. The space hosts Chronic Illness events, where Internet-inspired body artists enter an environment populated with fungi. The interventions of human performers are incorporated into the rotten physiology of the space, which itself becomes a live entity. This book involves those events in the analysis of connections between media technologies and primal life processes. It also offers strategies for urban dwelling which transcend normative family life.

Breaking Free
Breaking the Bank: The Cost Factor Revolution Traditionally, recording jazz involved significant financial hurdles. Studio time was expensive, often requiring musicians to book sessions in blocks to justify the cost. This pressure could stifle creativity, limiting experimentation and improvisation, hallmarks of the genre. Home studios have shattered these barriers. With readily available digital audio workstations (DAWs) and affordable microphones and interfaces, musicians can now record high-quality music from the comfort of their bedrooms. This democratization of recording allows for a more organic and iterative approach, where ideas can be captured and refined without the pressure of ticking studio clocks. Democratizing Collaboration: A Global Stage The geographical limitations of traditional recording are also dissolving. Online collaboration platforms allow geographically dispersed musicians to work together seamlessly. Imagine a saxophonist in New York laying down a solo over a rhythm section recorded in Tokyo - a reality facilitated by home studios. This fosters a global exchange of ideas, enriching jazz with a wider tapestry of influences. Additionally, social media platforms like Bandcamp and Soundcloud have become crucial tools for independent jazz artists to share their music directly with audiences worldwide, bypassing traditional gatekeepers like record labels.

Human! A Reflection of the Spirit, Soul and Mind from a Muslim’s Perspective
This book is about the constant battle between the human soul and the human mind. It also provides a different perspective on the purpose of life and the reason(s) for our creation. When the desires of the soul are not disciplined and controlled, they cause harm. Humans should try to achieve equilibrium in the soul to allow those who believe to achieve the purpose of their creation and to accomplish their mission on Earth without distraction. In this book, I address the characteristics of the human soul and its evil desires that may distract humans from succeeding in their mission and, in a simple yet effective way, show how to control those desires.
The Cinematic Constellation
Cinema, at its core, is a tapestry woven from multiple threads. It doesn't exist solely in the flickering images on the screen. A film's true magic lies in the intricate interplay between the narrative text (script, dialogue), the visual event (performance, cinematography), and the broader social context in which it is experienced. This essay delves into this "cinematic constellation," exploring how these elements intertwine to create a rich and multifaceted experience for the viewer. Text: The Foundation of Meaning The script serves as the blueprint for the film, laying out the story's foundation. Dialogue, character development, and plot all spring from this textual wellspring. Text establishes the narrative arc, guiding the audience through the emotional journey of the film. Consider the iconic line "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" from Gone With the Wind (1939). This single sentence, delivered with perfect timing by Clark Gable, encapsulates Rhett Butler's cynical attitude and foreshadows the film's tragic ending.
