Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) is renowned as one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century. Almost his entire artistic life was dedicated to creating image records of kabuki theatre productions and the actors who starred in them, including such notables as Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Onoe Kikugoro V. Kunichika constantly developed his own unique aesthetic style, always pushing the boundaries of ukiyo-e in bold and provocative new directions.DOYENS OF DELIRIUM collects 100 of Kunichika's most striking and vivid kabuki actor portrait designs, in a testament to the enduring innovation and power of his prolific output. The selection presented here draws from two decades of the artist's work, and features a wide range of seminal kabuki subjects produced between 1864 and 1883 (after which his artistic focus turned more to the triptych format). Part poem, part story, a mixture of image and text with a dash of autofiction, Heimlich Unheimlich probes the concepts of home and belonging. The context is the aftermath of the Second World War and the intertwining stories of the childhoods of two women both named after different types of cloth. Hessian is a German girl born towards the end of the Second World War, whose father fought in the German army. She migrates with her family to Australia when she is still a child where she suffers some discrimination because she is German. She eventually becomes an artist. Muslin is born into a Jewish family in England after the war. She is a violinist who subsequently becomes a poet and migrates to Australia as an adult. Her family, who live in the shadow of the holocaust and are unforgiving of Nazi Germany, are preoccupied with preserving a Jewish ethnicity. Both Hessian and Muslin are shaped by, but also rebel against, the cultural environments in which they grow up.Heimlich Unheimlich suggests strong links between Muslin and Hessian, despite their contrasting, even conflicting, childhoods. It explores, through photographic collages, the inter-generational aftereffects of the Second World War and the shadow it cast of personal and collective trauma. The work has considerable relevance to contemporary Australia and global issues concerning war, migration, displacement and ethnic identity.

Looking for Dante
When we pick up a book, we might forget that as well as reading a text we are looking at a physical object. This is not the case for the medieval poet Dante, whose famous poem, the 'Divine Comedy', was made into beautiful objects in the form of early printed books. The oldest of these books date back to the very beginning of the print revolution, over 550 years ago. In 2023, Rebecca Bowen and Simon Gilson - University of Oxford specialists in Dante Studies and Book History - invited artist-printmaker Wuon-Gean Ho to examine these books and make a contemporary response. The result is a body of work called 'Looking for Dante', a collection of artwork, film, and essays that explores universal themes in Dante's text and considers their relevance today. Moving from morality and condemnation through love and redemption, 'Looking for Dante' offers a modern reading of the 'Divine Comedy' and the historical books that preserve it, reflecting on the universal appeal of ink on paper.

Rogues and Scholars
A colorful and fast-moving account of how postwar London became the global center of the art market--a story of Impressionist masterpieces, dodgy dealers, and ground-breaking financial transactions. On October 15, 1958, Sotheby's of Bond Street staged an "event sale" of seven Impressionist paintings belonging to Erwin Goldschmidt: three Manets, two C矇zannes, one Van Gogh, and a Renoir. Kirk Douglas, Anthony Quinn, and Somerset Maugham were there as celebrity guests. The seven lots went for 瞿781,000--at the time the highest price for a single sale. The event established London as the world center of the art market and Sotheby's as an international auction house. It began a shift in power from the dealers to the auctioneers and paved the way for Impressionist paintings to dominate the market for the next forty years. Sotheby's had pulled off a massive coup by capturing the Impressionist market from Paris and New York--and now began its inexorable rise, opening offices all over the world. A huge expansion of the market followed, accompanied by rocketing prices, colorful scandals, and legal dramas. London transformed itself from a fusty place of old master painting sales to a revitalized center of contemporary art, crowned by the opening of Tate Modern in 2000. The Tate Modern successfully united new (and mostly foreign) money in London with the art world, offering its patrons a ready-made sophisticated social milieu alongside dealers in contemporary art. In a vibrant and briskly-paced style, James Stourton tells the story of the London art market from the immediate postwar period to the turn of the millennium. Clay
A human history told through clay--and how it has shaped us from ancient times to the present day. This book is a love letter to clay, the material that is at the beginning, middle and end of all of our lives; that contains within it the eternal, the elemental, and the everyday. People have been taking handfuls of earth and forming them into their own image since human history began. The clay these figures are made from was formed in deep geological time. It is the material that God, cast as the potter, uses to form Adam in Genesis. Tomb paintings in Egypt show the god Khum at a potter's wheel, throwing a human. Humans first recorded our own history on clay tablets, the shape of the characters influenced by the clay itself. The first love poem was inscribed in a clay tablet, from a Sumerian bride to her king more than 4000 years ago. Memory in Fragments
An exploration of how the ancient Maya engaged with their history by using, altering, and burying stone sculptures. For the ancient Maya, monumental stone sculptures were infused with agency. As they were used, reused, altered, and buried, such sculptures retained ceremonial meaning. In Memory in Fragments, Megan E. O'Neil explores how ancient Maya people engaged with history through these sculptures, as well as how they interacted with the stones themselves over the course of the sculptures' long "lives." Considering Maya religious practices, historiography, and conceptions of materials and things, O'Neil explores how Maya viewers perceived sculptures that were fragmented, scarred, burned, damaged by enemies, or set in unusual locations. In each case, she demonstrates how different human interactions, amid dynamic religious, political, and historical contexts, led to new episodes in the sculptures' lives. A rare example of cross-temporal and geographical work in this field, Memory in Fragments both compares sculptures within ancient Maya culture across Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize over hundreds of years and reveals how memory may accrue around and be evoked in material remains.
Handbooks and discipline of Art History in Italy
Between the end of the nineteenth century and the very first years of the twentieth century to deal with art history were mainly figures of intellectuals who were not properly specialists in the subject and who felt the need to fill the void in which this discipline was found in the Italy of the time. Indeed, there was a need for greater popularization of art history and specific teaching in secondary schools, which at the time had not yet been included in ministerial programs. Within the wide production of texts that, in that period, began to be designed for teaching, three manuals are examined that, by their characteristics, constitute an exhaustive sampling. In the present case, a number of common themes have been identified, which are addressed from time to time in an unambiguous manner or with different approaches depending on the training and interests of the individual authors: the problem of the iconographic set of texts, the prominence of Renaissance art, the evaluation of applied arts, and the sources used.

Fenwick opens up the discussion of the meaning and purpose of the Stanley Kubrick Archive by considering its material realities via a critical survey and archaeological analysis of its contents. By undertaking such an analysis, Fenwick moves beyond the mythic status of the archive being Kubrick's archive and instead foregrounds the wider cultural value and significance of the collection and uses the archive to reveal histories, stories, and ideas beyond a focus on Stanley Kubrick, proving that the Stanley Kubrick Archive doesn't just have to be about Stanley.

This book tells the story and includes the collection of sketches that were done by award winning, illustrator, Helane Freeman. Interpretation of Art
This volume examines the criticism of five influential British writers on the visual arts--John Ruskin, Walter Pater, Roger Fry, Clive Bell, and Sir Herbert Read. Their works span a period in the history of art that "in productivity and significance is more impressive than any other period since the Renaissance." Each of these writers possesses extraordinary literary skills. Another common tie is their awareness of serving as spokesmen for art to an audience that was mainly indifferent or even hostile. Even though the aesthetic outlook of Pater, Fry, and Bell represents a violent reaction to Ruskin's moralistic and literary interpretation of art, they were no less concerned than he to overcome the national apathy toward art and to assert its cultural importance. Sir Herbert Read reconciles the oppositions in the work of his predecessors in an aesthetic philosophy that stresses the social and ethnical values of art without sacrificing the idea of individual expression. The major part of Solomon Fishman's study is an examination of the aesthetic theories embodied in the writings of each critic.
