Ruth Duckworth: Life as a Unity
Published in conjunction with the first monographic exhibition of sculptor Ruth Duckworth's work since 2006, this book makes use of art historical advances of the last several decades to examine her work and practice in a new light. Ruth Duckworth: Life as a Unity offers an in-depth look at Duckworth's practice and history, with essays that focus on her connection to geomorphology and its influence on her studio practice, her spiritual life, and how market demarcations like "sculpture" and "craft" came to shape our understanding of her artwork. Fully illustrated, the book includes many examples of her stoneware and ceramic works of abstract forms derived from nature as well as new documentation of the recently reinstalled public mural Clouds Over Lake Michigan. It features an introduction by exhibition curator Laura Steward with essays and other contributions from Abigail Winograd, Jack Schneider, and the University of Chicago Geophysics Professor, Douglas MacAyeal.
Timeless Beauty
A concise introduction to the matchless still life collection of the Dresden Gem瓣ldegaleriePublished in conjunction with the eponymous exhibition at the Old Meister Gallery (Gem瓣ldegalerie) in Dresden, this richly illustrated book presents a selection of stunning still life paintings. The enchanted objects depicted in still lifes bear witness to great wealth and hedonism, but they also reflect the worldly curiosity of the Enlightenment and the religious reverence of the Baroque era. Along with individual works from the Gem瓣ldegalerie's world-class collection, this volume examines the many facets of the genre of still life, as well as its role in Dutch and Flemish painting traditions. What function did still lifes serve, what allegories and symbols were hidden in their coded messages? More than 70 works from the Dresden collection by painters such as Cornelis de Heem, Abraham Mignon, Rachel Ruysch and Frans Snyders provide a unique insight into the heyday of this magical genre.
Aby Warburg
The aim of this book is to investigate the possible contributions of the art historian Aby Warburg to contemporary art historiography. Currently, Warburg's thought has been revisited by scholars from various fields, although the bibliography on the subject is still scarce in Brazil. Georges Didi-Huberman has been one of the main disseminators of Warburg in Brazil and abroad, which is why in this research he has become the main theoretical source. We started by investigating the fundamental Warburgian concepts of the survival of images and the formulas of the pathos. In a related way, these concepts shape a new approach to art history, focussing on images obscured by hegemonic history. This work is made up of studies on the writings of Aby Warburg, the tracing of relationships between Warburg and other thinkers such as Jacob Burckhardt and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as his approach to the field of anthropology. Finally, an experimental exercise in the application of Aby Warburg's historiographical method is constructed using some images from the work of the Brazilian artist Farnese de Andrade.

The Insurgency of Vem'a'Zar
In the vastness of the universe, countless worlds thrive, each with its unique tapestry of life and civilization. Among these worlds lies Earth, a planet of unparalleled beauty and diversity, but also one shadowed by the troubling presence of its dominant species: humanity. The Homo sapiens of Earth have shown a propensity for violence, greed, and environmental destruction that stands in stark contrast to the harmony observed on other inhabited planets. This book chronicles the intertwining fates of Vemazar, a planet where peace and unity have prevailed for millennia, and Earth, a world teetering on the brink of self-destruction. Through the eyes of Richmor, Elyra, Sylith, and other key figures, we delve into the profound discoveries and moral dilemmas that arise when advanced alien technology and the future of humanity collide.
Sound Body
This research "Sound Body: Voice that can be seen" reports on some of my experiences and discoveries in the process of investigating the work and poetics of the actor, focusing on the deaf person. We can find here an analysis of two moments: the first is about my experience as a tutor for Vocal Technique I, taught by Professor Dr. Fernando Aleixo, in the Theater Course at the Federal University of Uberl璽ndia (UFU): it was a work carried out with a deaf student from the Theater Course at UFU; the second moment consists of observing two groups of deaf people (a group of young people and a group of adults), both in social interaction practices. The aim of the research was to assess how deaf people use their bodies to produce voice vibrations. Right from the start, the research made me aware of the need to delve deeper into the universe of the deaf: to understand it better by getting closer to it, before exploring it. The discoveries made during the research could possibly serve as a working tool for the actor's preparation, for learning Libras for both deaf and hearing people and for training Libras interpreters.
The Road Ahead
Multiphysics Coupling: Bladed disks experience a complex interplay of aerodynamic, thermal, and structural forces. Modeling these interactions effectively remains a challenge. Current methods often involve uncoupled simulations, neglecting the influence of one physics domain on another. Material Characterization: Material properties like creep, fatigue, and damping are crucial for long-term performance prediction. Current characterization methods often lack the resolution to capture the intricate behavior of advanced materials used in high-performance engines. Manufacturing Imperfections: Real-world disks exhibit manufacturing variations and surface roughness, impacting vibration and stress distribution. Existing models often struggle to incorporate these effects accurately. High-Fidelity Modeling: High-fidelity models incorporating all the complexities mentioned above become computationally expensive and time-consuming. Striking a balance between accuracy and practicality remains a challenge.

Color and Painting, Part 2.
The second part of the monograph "Color and Painting" (the first part was published in 2021) is devoted to further consideration of color problems related to painting. The first part discussed the following issues - basic ideas about color, colorimetric color, interaction of light with matter, subject color, color of the paint layer. In the second part - perception of brightness and color, color of nature, aesthetic properties of the image, painting technique. In particular - color phenomena in plein air conditions, including color adaptation of the eye, were considered in detail. In all cases the color science aspect of the question was emphasized. The book is aimed primarily at artists (including amateurs), but will be useful to all those interested in the problem of color, as the presentation is conducted on a modern scientific level.
Art therapy
It is known that the therapeutic process over many years has been based, for the most part, on symptoms and protocols, leaving aside the humanisation of care. As a consequence, the stigma of a "degenerative and incurable" disease led to leprosy sufferers being exiled from social life. The reflection developed shows that, despite the different theoretical frameworks, art therapy is permeated by an aesthetic conception of the human being, seen as a creative being, capable of becoming an artist of life itself. The conclusion is that art can be a valuable tool for improving patients' prognosis. The Story of the Restructuring of a Hospital, providing the reconstruction of several people's lives through Art.
Cachoeiro de Itapemirim
Capturing an image involves the simple act of focusing and shooting. Each one is accompanied by the gaze of the photographer and this gaze is shown in all the spaces of the photograph. Capturing an image, recording it, rather than eternalizing a moment, also provides an admiring or critical gaze, which always allows us to read and interpret beyond what was intended. It's up to each reader, based on their knowledge and their reading of the world, to assign meanings and senses to an image. This is what drives us: reading, re-reading and getting to know Cachoeiro through the lenses of students who, uncommitted to a critical vision, have provided us with rich material for the construction of this analysis.

As a watercolor painting artist and instructor for over 50 years, Rae Andrews has had the privilege of helping students from all over the world grow in their personal painting journeys. Many are rushing to 'find their personal style' before they have learned the basics of drawing and color mixing. Fenollosa’s Legacy in Late Nineteenth-Century Japan
Fenollosa's Legacy in Late Nineteenth Century Japan: An American Scholar's Role in Resurrecting the Art of Japan makes a critical assessment of American art theorist Ernest F. Fenollosa's work in Meiji Japan. Ernest F. Fenollosa was first hired as a Tokyo University professor of political philosophy in 1878 but became an art theorist and policymaker for Japan's Education Ministry. His illustrious career as an art administrator began with the 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that cemented the reputation of his work. Working closely with Okakura Kakuzō (Tenshin), Fenollosa became the lightning rod in defining the course of modern painting as well as in establishing the first national art school. He is widely credited with resurrecting moribund traditional Japanese painting to health. The author shows this assessment of Fenollosa as the savior of Japanese traditional painting work may not have been deserved by examining the historical context in which he made the 1882 speech. The book offers the first English translation of Fenollosa's 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that had been previously unavailable to the non-Japanese reading audience.

Male Idols and Branding in Chinese Luxury
Challenging the Western view of idols as objects of worship, this book explores the role that male idols play in fashion and cosmetics brand marketing in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau; including the role of the female gaze. It examines idols in the more modern, pan-Asian sense of the word - as objects of social devotion, worshipped by the adoring masses and, in China and Korea, as objects of social and moral uplift. The contemporary idol wields great power - the power to influence taste, and to sell - and Male Idols and Branding in Chinese Luxury focuses on their ability to arouse the consumer appetite to buy. In China, popular culture idols play a vital role in the luxury fashion and cosmetics industries as brand ambassadors and this volume fills a critical gap in the English-language literature on this key element of the marketing industry, bringing together authors from the United States and China, and featuring case studies on idols Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan. Through considering the subtleties of branding and marketing in China, Korea, and Japan, and the relationship of Chinese idols to fans and consumers in other Asian countries, the authors delve into brand-idol collaborations, particularly through lenses of brand image and toxic fan culture.
Remission and Derogation in the work of Jac Leirner
The 20th century stands out for its practices and procedures that set up divergences in artistic discourse. The history of the avant-garde allows us to recognize its questionings and propositions in Dadaism, Surrealism, Constructivism, Pop Art and Minimalism. These movements, known for their ruptures, experimentation and transgressions, reverberate in contemporary times. This book looks at the work of Jac Leirner (S瓊o Paulo, 1961), an artist whose works point to possible dialogues with the procedures, gestures and questions of the avant-garde movements, especially those of the 50s and 60s.
Calligraphy Meets Philosophy - Talk 3
Calligraphy Meets Philosophy - Talk 3Introduction(I)The Calligraphy Meets Philosophy series aims to foster a correct and deeper understanding of traditional Chinese calligraphy and philosophy. It does so by having calligraphies of selected classical texts accompanied by line-by-line translations and annotated remarks.(II)Talk 3 focuses on outlining some important traditional Chinese concepts like "Filial Piety (孝)", "Wisdom (智)", "Tacit Deeds of Grace (陰德)", and "Cultivating One's Foundations (務本)", etc... Selected texts include those by Bai Juyi (白居易, 772-846 AD), Liu Yuxi (劉禹錫, 772-842 AD), Li Qingzhao (李清照, 1084-1151 AD), Sima Guang (司馬光, 1019-1086 AD), Sun Guoting (孫過庭, 648-703 AD), and Sun Yat-Sen (孫逸仙, 1866-1925); as well, phrases from the canonical Analects (《論語》), Book of Rites (《禮記》), and Platform Sutra (《六祖壇經》) are also included. The book concludes with KS Vincent Poon's modelling and remarks on the Chinese calligraphy masterpiece Yi Ying Stele (《乙瑛碑》).(III)Here, I would like to thank my father, Dr Kwok Kin POON (潘國鍵博士), for his enduring assistance. His invaluable insight on correctly interpreting various old texts has contributed significantly to my translations. Further, his continuing encouragement has always been the source of my passion. Perhaps this is a prime example of "passing on (傳承) the family's profession and reputation (家業)", a custom that the Japanese hold so dearly. And that is exactly why Japan can still retain its traditional culture and values.KS Vincent PoonAugust 2024, Toronto

The book here is based mainly on prints in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Osaka Municipal Museum collections.Hiroshige I had done his own series Famous Views of Naniwa (Osaka), 10 prints, as early as 1834, but it was his 100 Famous Views of Edo that caused the significant copy production.Copying ideas and prints was quite normal in the Edo Period Japan print business.

Caf矇 Cultural/Encontro de Ideias
The aim of this intervention project, called Caf矇 Cultural/Encontro de Ideias (Cultural Caf矇/Encounter of Ideas), was to promote interdisciplinarity and stimulate research in academic and cultural areas, providing meetings between teachers, researchers, artists and high school students, postgraduate students and the public interested in expanding their knowledge of socio-cultural issues. Themes of diverse values were combined with the problems of the cultural industry: theater, music, literature and sociology. The first season of this project was held at the L繳cio Craveiro da Silva library in the city of Braga - Portugal, outside the confines of schools and universities, thus providing greater access to knowledge and without any distinction or prerequisites for public participation. The themes applied in this action were intended to provide further clarification about the different artistic segments, as well as their specificities. The meeting ended with a timely presentation of topics from sociology, which deals with the social life of individuals and groups.
Melodrama, Masculinity and International Art Cinema
To date, masculinity has tended to be presented in cinema studies as a monolithic category that serves the interests of a hegemonic, normative patriarchy. This book demonstrates how the art-house film, in the form of personal cinema and its exploitation of the melodramatic mode, tells a different story, presenting a vision of masculinity that is sexually fluid, fragmented, unstable, and often incapacitated to the point of paralysis, being undermined not only from within, but also by external circumstance. Hollywood, in the form of "male weepies," offered preliminary insights into this failing masculinity, but it is with the flowering of Post-World War II art film and its subsequent movement into the "indie" waves of the late 20th century and the early 21st century that cinema more profoundly realizes its potential to serve as a vehicle for the exploration of men's interior lives, developing what might be termed the "male melodrama," the correlative of the woman's film. The present volume offers a series of essays that reassess the role of melodrama in a number of touchstone films in the art-cinema tradition that explore the subjective experience of a male protagonist, announcing the emergence of a genre that has progressively proliferated in contemporary cinema. While these films, made by such notable auteurs as Vittorio De Sica, Satyajit Ray, Vincente Minnelli, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Ingmar Bergman, Fran癟ois Truffaut, Jacques Demy, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, and Luca Guadagnino have been frequently discussed as outstanding examples of art films, to date, with a few exceptions, they have not been examined in terms of their representation of gender and subjectivity, which has left a lacuna in accounts of screened masculinities.

The indigenous artist's perception of Pedra Pintada/RR
This work aims to investigate the representations that indigenous artists in Roraima make of Pedra Pintada/RR. As a research problem, we asked ourselves how the indigenous artists of Roraima represent Pedra Pintada. To do this, we studied what is meant by Heritage and all its divisions. Subsequently, we searched for theoretical and bibliographical information on this heritage asset. This research included the participation of three indigenous artists from Roraima: Est礙nio Pereira, Isaias Miliano and Amazoner Okaba. Based on the artists' narratives, we concluded that they gave rise to three main categories: 1- Meanings of Pedra Pintada; 2- Knowledge of/ experiences with Pedra Pintada and; 3- Techniques for representing Pedra Pintada. By analyzing these categories, we can conclude that we still have a lot of research to do on heritage, rock art and preservation laws, and above all, to understand/value those who have already been discussing and taking a more symbolic/careful/critical look at this asset, the indigenous people. Keywords: Pedra Pintada/RR. Identity. Artistic production.
What Are Museums For?
The days when museums were dusty, stuffy institutions displaying their wealth and wisdom to a reverential public are over. Museums today are a cultural battleground. Who should decide what is put on display and how it is presented? Who gets to set the narrative? In this passionately argued book, Jon Sleigh maintains that museums must be for all people and inclusion must be at the heart of everything they do. But what does good inclusion look like in practice? Cleverly structured like a museum tour, Sleigh uses seven illustrative museum objects from seven very different museums to explore such wide-ranging issues as trust-building, representation, digital access, conflicting narratives, removal from display and restitution.
From Love to Death
This is a story of love at first sight, the story of Emilia and Zbigniew Fitz. It took place in the real world, full of challenges. Only strong love could endure all that we faced. I started my memoir with the stories of our parents - how they did not survive World War II. Their stories made a great impact on our personalities. We grew up with the fear of war and hate of violence. Art became a way to show our thanks for life and a way to develop our minds, breaking down the walls of our consciousness. Beyond a love story, it is a story of loyalty, sacrifice and the search for meaning through art.

A Rich Tapestry
Appalachia isn't a one-note melody. This region, woven with vibrant threads of culture, faces challenges that deserve a closer look. Musically rich, Appalachia boasts bluegrass, mountain ballads, and soulful storytelling. Artisans craft quilts and furniture, keeping traditions alive. But economic opportunities can be scarce, with limited jobs and dependence on industries straining resources. Despite hardships, resilience echoes through the hills. Communities band together, and a spirit of self-reliance shines. Tourism, fueled by breathtaking landscapes, injects income. Appalachia's story is complex, a tapestry of beauty, struggle, and unwavering spirit. By understanding its challenges and celebrating its unique culture, we can help this region weave a brighter future.
The Nature of Woodbury
If the "real work of the artist is a way of being in the world" (Rick Rubin, The Creative Act), then it is possible to make of one's life a work of art. The place in which a person lives then becomes part of the raw material for the creative act of being alive. Where we are is intrinsically part of who we are. The many people who responded to the request for creative works that reflect the nature of Woodbury for this collection are living proof that the nature of the place we live in shapes individual nature, identity.
Wagner's concept of Kunstreligion through the prism of the mystery beginning
The book analyzes the mystery foundations of R. Wagner's work. The opus, which concludes the composer's creative path, was an opera-mystery. All the previous musical and stage works, beginning with The Flying Dutchman, were approaches to the creation of a summarizing opus. The mystery foundations of R. Wagner's work are conceptualized by the author of the monograph through the prism of the great composer's transversal world outlook. In R. Wagner's work, the idea of Kunstreligion reflects the composer's religious and philosophical picture of the world, which was the result of his heuristic quest. R. Wagner's interaction with cultural and historical heritage reflects his interest in the knowledge that was accumulated in various areas of social consciousness. The book is addressed to musicologists, culturologists, as well as to a wide range of readers with a heuristic interest in these areas of humanitarian knowledge.
