This volume consists of three sets of watercolor drawings, each depicting non-Europea peoples or places in Asia and the Americas. The volume belonged to the famous collector and antiquarian Camillo Massino (1620-1677), and was part of a large donation to the library by his descendants in the 19th century. This is the first in-depth investigation of the three series in terms of materials or manufacture, possible relations to one another or other contemporaneous illustrations, and their role in advancing understanding of the depicted peoples. Clues within the drawings, their style and content suggest not only new interpretations, but specific links between and among them, and likely origins, placing them squarely into the most intense period in the early modern era of European interest in these cultures. As the first book-length critical examination of this subject, Holocaust Memory and Youth Performance considers plays that are produced by major theatre companies alongside performances written by young authors and pieces taken from the diaries and memoirs of those who experienced the Holocaust as children or adolescents. While youth-focused plays about the Holocaust have been in the repertories of top professional companies throughout the world for decades and continue to be performed in theatres, schools, and community centers, they are often neglected in concentrated and comparative studies of Holocaust theatre. Between 1966 and 1976, American artist Nancy Spero completed some of her most aggressively political work. Made at a time when Spero was a key member of the anti-war and feminist arts-activism that burgeoned in the New York art world during the period, her works demonstrate a violent and bodily rejection of injustice. Considering the ways in which anti-war and feminist art used emotion as a means to persuade and protest, Pain and Politics in Postwar Feminist Art examines the history of this crucial decade in American art politics through close attention to Spero's practice. Situating her work amongst the activism that defined the era, this book examines the ways in which sensation and emotion became political weapons for a generation of artists seeking to oppose patriarchy and war. Exemplary of the way in which artists were using metaphors of sensation and emotion in their work as part of the anti-Vietnam war and feminist art movements in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Spero's practice acts as a model for representing how politics feels. By exploring Spero's political engagement anew, this book offer a profound recontextualization of the important contribution that Spero made to Feminist thought, politics and art in the US.

Calling attention to the unseen mediation and re-mediation of life narratives in online and physical spaces, this ground-breaking exploration uncovers the ever-changing strategies that authors, artists, publishers, curators, archivists and social media corporations adopt to shape, control or resist the auto/biographical in these texts. Concentrating on contemporary life texts found in the material book, museums, on social media and archives that present perceptions of individuality and autonomy, Reading Mediated Life Narratives exposes the traces of personal, cultural, technological, and political mediation that must be considered when developing reading strategies for such life narratives. Amy Carlson asks such questions as what agents act upon these narratives; what do the text, the creator, and the audience gain, and what do they lose; how do constantly evolving technologies shape or stymie the auto/biographical "I"; and finally, how do the mediations affect larger issues of social and collective memory? An examination of the range of sites at which vulnerability and intervention can occur, Carlson does not condemn but stages an intercession, showing us how it is increasingly necessary to register mediated agents and processes modifying the witnessing or recuperation of original texts that could condition our reception. With careful thought on how we remember, how we create and control our pictures, voices, words, and records, Reading Mediated Life Narratives reveals how we construct and negotiate our social identities and memories, but also what systems control us.

In this work, Jessica Inez Backsell explores a very particular form of secret keeping which paradoxically does not only require non-knowledge to be produced. Instead, the author looks at a secret whose power resides in its exposure and the fact that it to some extent is known. What Backsell alludes to is the (not so commonly referred to) open secret. These are secrets which have a rather special connection to cognitive judgment. They require us to see while we do not see or perhaps even better--to notice but not openly acknowledge. They in other words hover as forms of semi-knowledge, never fully rescinded yet neither completely present. To explore this, Backsell turns to a contemporary setting that is very apt for studying practices that produce semi-knowledge--the so called luxury freeport. Simply put, the luxury freeport is a warehouse where collectibles, such as art, are safely stored in a legal threshold which makes them non-susceptible to tax liabilities. It is also widely known for being shrouded in a clandestine fog. Backsell argues that this is a status which is enacted through the construction of boundaries that on the one hand sparks frustration yet paradoxically also kindles curiosity. More specifically, it actualizes the effects of withdrawal and displays what practices can be mobilized to produce mysteries from the openly contested. Such practices therefore also reverberate into the broader context of the art market as they presuppose its "mythmaking" to unfold.

The voices of the spirits-whether they are the dead, the never-born, or figures like Lucifer-feel palpable and immediate. The book's visual elements, crafted under the guidance of Lucifer himself by illustrators like Fares Kaze, are not mere decorations but transmissions in their own right, adding another dimension to the work. The interplay between text and imagery creates a holistic experience that transcends the written word.The book thematically investigates the transitional spaces that exist between life and death, between what is seen and what is unseen.
