Joaquin Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863-died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. Some of his breathtaking landscapes show how he was familiar with and employed similar techniques at the photograph. His landscapes are a great introduction to Spanish history.In the course of preparing for his grand masterpiece "The Vision of Spain", which hangs in the Hispanic Society of America, Sorolla visited many places of Spain. When the Enlightenment thinker Gotthold Ephraim Lessing wrote his treatise Laocoon: An Essay on the Limits of Painting and Poetry in 1766, he outlined the strengths and weaknesses of each art. Traditionally, inscriptions were created through collaboration between a literatus-calligrapher and an artisan-carver. However, during the Qing dynasty, literati began to take on the role of carvers themselves, challenging the conventional separation between intellectual and manual labor. This book explores how the literati's involvement in inscription carving blurred the cultural and social boundaries between them and artisans, who were becoming increasingly well-educated. Through an analysis of intellectual, aesthetic, and practical aspects of this practice, Art by Literati reveals the complex dynamics of literati and artisanal identities, emphasizing the situational and fluid nature of these roles. He is known for his participation in the series 69 stations of the Nakasendō together with Hiroshige.The series A Tōkaidō Board Game of Courtesans, Fifty-three Pairings in the Yoshiwara used the Tōkaidō with landscape inserts as an excuse to show courtesans and geisha, bijin-ga, to skirt the censorship. They were published 1821-1823. His bijin-ga are considered to be masterpieces of the "decadent" Bunsei Era (1818-1830).Most of them have impressive hairdo with many ornamental hairpins and combs. Their dress is extravagant with beautiful patterns and sublime embroideries. Their faces are elongated squares with long noses and small pouted painted mouths.Courtesans were desirable for their rich and splendid attire, not so much for their beauty and their names were actually like trademarks for a series of girls performing the role with the brothel in question.

Lifework
Following the critical scepticism surrounding the notion of the 'self' as a singular entity during the 1960s, many artists and writers sought to test the apparent problem posed by autobiography as both a traditional genre and as a way of working. Considering the consequent emergence of autotheory, Lifework traces this shift in artistic and literary production during the late twentieth century and beyond, examining a set of diverse practices that mine the line between what it is to make art and what it is to live life. The book's chapters connect a variety of artistic strategies that cut across medium, geography and time, uncovering how the historical marginalisation of first-person experience has taken on larger social, cultural and political implications in the contemporary moment and how the work of living might still relate to the work of art.

Hokusai's 53 Stations of the Tōkaidō 1802 is something completely different from his first square edition 1801.Hokusai here employs the horizontal "landscape" format and abt the double size of his square 1801 edition.In this series Hokusai focus on wonderful folkloric scenes of ordinary people going about their work, in addition to the travel scenes.Hokusai also begins to develop the landscapes that were to become a standard for later generations of Tōkaidō series.Hokusai develops the concept of the Tōkaidō print from cartoon to folklore and the beginning of landscape. He builds on a b/w guide, Tōkaidō meisho zue from 1797, ISBN 9781956773316.It was a great and early contribution to the growing Tōkaidō literature, which Hokusai dominated for some 30 years.

Byzantine Interiors and Decoration
The sources of the present research about Byzantine domestic interiors, textiles and other household items derives from the visual arts and the Byzantine literature. Historians, emperors, travelers, ecclesiastic philosophers, bishops and monks at that time provide also substantial information about domestic interiors, decoration and furniture. The research material concerns the Byzantine era and territory, although it includes a few samples from Byzantine Italy and a few after Constantinople's fall in 29 May 1453 by the Ottomans, which reflect the spirit of Byzantium. It does not include interiors and furniture from Christian Medieval Western Europe because it was mixed with the vigorous artistic culture of Northern Europe or post Byzantine because Baroque elements altered the Byzantine artistic culture. The scope of this book is to introduce mainly the glory of Byzantine interiors, textiles and other house decoration items through Byzantine Art taking into consideration that the Byzantine artist copied on his depictions the existing interiors at that time. These art sources include mosaics, frescos, icons, coins, seals and manuscript illuminations.

An important new examination of Islamic themes in the art of Albrecht D羹rer Albrecht D羹rer's depictions of Muslim figures and subjects are considered by many to be among his most perplexing images. This confusion arises from the assumption that the artist and his northern European contemporaries regarded the Muslim Levant as an exotic faraway land inhabited by hostile adversaries, not a region of neighboring empires affiliated through political and mercantile networks. Dackerman notes how Gutenberg's development of printing shares an inextricable relationship to the 1453 Ottoman siege of Constantinople. While Gutenberg's workshop produced a call to crusade and other publications antagonistic to the Muslim East, D羹rer's prints, she shows, instead emphasize instances of affiliation between Christendom and Islam. A breathtaking work of scholarship, D羹rer's Knots shows how the artist's prints of Muslim subjects give expression to the interconnectedness of Christian Europe and the Islamic East.

The official title for this work is "Pictures from the Famous Places of the Fifty-three Stations".Hiroshige produced these prints in 1855 more than 20 years after his first horizontal Hoeidō edition published 1833-34, which is included as thumbnails for comparison.It is instructive to see Hiroshige's use of his now mature experience as he develops the vertical format for the narrative. He does designs as he would do a photograph. He set the standard for landscape photography, without a camera.The Tōkaidō series was the most popular print series ever made in Japan. Hiroshige returned to this theme again and again, with delightful results.It is possible to travel the same road today and some villages are still looking quite like they did back then. The postal stations were constructed between 1601 and 1624.

Hiroshige Kunisada Kuniyoshi 53 Pairings of the Tokaido
This series, Fifty-three Pairings of the Tokaido Road, Tōkaidō gojūsan tsui, 東海道五十三対, popularly called Pairs Tōkaidō or 53 Parallels for the Tokaido Road, was published in 1845-1846.It is a unique cooperation between three artists: Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kunisada and Utagawa Kuniyoshi and five publishers: Ibaya Kyūbei, (Ibaya Senzabur繫 (Dansend繫)) and Kojimaya J羶bei, Ensh羶ya Matabei, Ebiya Rinnosuke (Kaijud繫) and Iseya Ichibei.The special feature of this "Pairs Tōkaidō" is the pairing of a print for each station with a legend, a wonderful, dramatic, historic or supranatural story. These stories are told partly by the print theme, partly by accompanying text in a cartouche. Sometimes there is a poem. It is a very enjoyable tour!
Hiroshige Famous Views of Naniwa (Osaka)
This book shows the 10 Famous Views Of Naniwa (Osaka) by Hiroshige published in 1834. They are unusual in that they show markets with merchants negotiating.The 8 Views is a Chinese artistic and literary theme developed already in the 10th century and then transposed into Japanese culture, where it developed its own independent expression.Print artist Utagawa Hiroshige as many other Japanese artists took up the issue of 8 Views of Ōmi and again as other Japanese artists he expanded the theme into 8 Views of Kanazawa, 8 Views of Edo Environs and other locations.To give some background there are many other prints especially about rice but also fishing and transportation, and cultural activities afforded by the wealth accumulated by the merchants. It is possible to travel to see the same sites today.
Hiroshige 53 Stations of the Tokaido Aritaya
The Aritaya Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, Tōkaidō gojūsan tsugi no uchi, 東海道五十三次之内, is one of the most beautiful of Hiroshige's huge production of landscape print series in spite of its small size. It is only abt 10 x 15 cm (with variations), Yotsugiri yokoban (quarter ōban).It is also unusual in that it is a veritable full course and manual in landscape print design. It is a very rewarding study.All the way through Hiroshige follows certain design principles of proportion of elements, arranging elements and views by diagonals and parallels and balancing of color elements.Compared to most of his other Tōkaidō series Hiroshige in Aritaya focus on letting the landscape tell the story instead of letting people or legend do that, although this is not followed through completely.
Eccentric Renaissance
The Byzantine icon has long remained marginal to the study of art's history, only emerging from Giorgio Vasari's condemnation of the gilded, unnatural style of Byzantine painting (maniera greca) when his theories were challenged in the early twentieth century. Eccentric Renaissance focuses on an earlier reaction to Vasari's narrative and discusses three artists who shaped distinct responses to the hegemonic sway of sixteenth-century Italian art. Domenikos Theotokopoulos (more familiarly known as El Greco), Michael Damaskenos, and Georgios Klontzas were contemporary icon painters on the Venetian colony of Crete. Trained in the rich tradition of Cretan painting, these artists differed from their forebears in asserting a self-conscious creativity in their work. They renewed the art of icon painting in the context of Venetian colonialism by reconsidering how their art might address the contemporary world. Deemed eccentric, El Greco's work presented a Greek path contrary to the one promoted in Vasari's history of art. His was an art that was sensual, complex, and difficult. Michael Damaskenos's profound engagement with Venetian painting was mixed with traditional iconic styles, reflecting life in a colony in which Orthodox and Catholic, Greek and Venetian were fluid rather than static descriptors of the self. Georgios Klontzas used his art to confront the horrors of his day. The impending threat of the Ottoman conquest of Crete and the outbreak of plague in 1592 shaped his extraordinary manuscript, Apocalypse and History, that sought to understand these calamities in light of both divine providence and human experience. Each of these artists chose an eccentric point of departure for their work. Greek, colonized, and fearful, they invite us to look again and to look differently at the later sixteenth century.

Come on the journey from Edo, modern day Tokyo, to Kyoto, as experienced by Utagawa Hiroshige in, when he travelled the road to participate in an important procession in 1832.There were 53 post stations along this important road, apart from the start and terminus, in all 55 prints, which are all here in the order from Edo to Kyoto, In the Hoeidō edition (1833-34).This was the most popular print series ever made in Japan. It was even more popular than Hokusai's series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which had been recently published and which had influenced Hiroshige tremendously (ISBN 9781956215243).It is possible to travel the same road today and some villages are still looking quite like they did back then.
