Jean-L矇on G矇r繫me and the Crisis of History Painting in the 1850s

Ingram 出版
2024/05/05 出版

'A crisis in historical representation unfolded in French visual culture in the first half of the nineteenth century, reaching its climax at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1855, when artists and critics alike came to a troubling realization: depictions of past heroes that had once held exceptional influence over their viewers now left the public indifferent. This book shows that underneath this crisis was a mounting demand for empirical observation in art, and an emergent modern epistemology that posited the past as foundational and yet inaccessible to the physically and historically specific individual. Since neither the painter nor the viewer could have actually experienced a bygone historical incident as it unfolded, was history painting even feasible in modern times? When historical representation seemed all but impossible to critics and artists of various hues, G矇r繫me came up with a momentous solution. A small group of paintings constitute the focus of this provocative study on the artist's early work, whose pivotal role in G矇r繫me's oeuvre as well as in the broader history of modernization of art have been so far unrecognized in art historical scholarship. In these, the artist charted a new roadmap for the art of painting in response to the modern sensibility of history.'

All-Women Art Spaces in Europe in the Long 1970s

Ingram 出版
2024/05/05 出版

The texts gathered in this volume embrace women artists-only exhibitions, festivals, collective art projects, groups and associations, organised in the long 1970s in Europe (1968-1984). These all-women art initiatives are closely related to developments within the political and politicized women's movement in Europe and America but what emerges is the varied and plural manner of their engagements with feminism(s) alongside their creation of 'heterotopias' in relation to specific sites/ politics/ collaborative art practices. This book presents examples from Italy, Spain, UK, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Denmark, Germany (East and West), The Netherlands, France and Sweden. While each chapter is largely devoted to one country, the authors point to how the local and specific political situation in which these initiatives emerged is linked to global tendencies as well as inter-European exchanges. Each chapter of this book thus assesses the impact of travelling views of feminism, by considering connections made between women artists (often when travelling abroad) or their knowledge of art practices from abroad. Distinct and highly varied attitudes towards political activism (from strong engagement to a clearly pronounced distance and even hostility) are shown in each essay and, what is more, they are shown as based on radically different premises about feminism, politics and art. Contributors: Fabienne Dumont, Annika ?hrner, Katy Deepwell, Elke Krasny, Nina Hoechtl, Julia Wieger, Monika Kaiser, Kathleen Wentrack, Katia Almerini, M獺rcia Oliveira, Agata Jakubowska, and Susanne Altmann.

Dada 1916

Jones  著
Ingram 出版
2024/05/05 出版

Dada formed in 1916, embedded in a world of rational appearances that belied a raging confusion - in the middle of the First World War, in the neutral centre of a warring continent, fundamentally at the heart of Western art. This book sets out new coordinates in revision of a formation that Western art history routinely exhausts through its characterisation as a 'revolutionary movement' of anarchic cultural dissent, and does so in order to contest the perpetuated assumptions about Dada that underlie the popular myth. Dada is difficult and the response to it is not easy, and what emerge from the theoretical readings developed here are profoundly rational bases to the Dada non-sense that pitted itself against its civilised age, critically and implicitly to propose that Dada courses as vitally today as it did in 1916. The Zurich Dada formation initiated deliberate and strategic cultural engagements that struggled then, as they do now, to cohere in any sense as a 'movement', extreme in their ranges as diametrically hostile oppositionalities. Dada may be given art historically as identifiable along a trajectory of sustained ruptures and seizures, but it confounds all attempts at defined or definitive readings. This book duly offers not a history of Dada in Zurich but theoretical engagements of the emergencies and now the residue of the years 1916-19 - from 'lautgedichte' to laughter, masks to manifestos, chance to chiasmata - rounding to the 'permanent' Dada by which the formation ultimately breaks the containment and deep peace of art historical chronology.

Avant-Garde Art and Criticism in Francoist Spain

Ingram 出版
2024/05/05 出版

This groundbreaking book surveys the shifts in the aesthetic discourse and artistic practises that decisively influenced the shaping of the avant-garde during Franco's dictatorship (1939-1975). On the basis of extensive, so far unpublished, archival material, it discusses the intellectual and cultural field as an important battlefield for fighting the regime from within. The study opens with a comprehensive historical overview on the cultural world from the end of the Spanish Civil War throughout Francoism and reveals for the first time the broader intellectual and cultural context of vanguard art considering the special relations and negotiation processes between artist, critics and institutions during a major gap in the historiography of post-war Spanish culture: the late Franco dictatorship (1959-1975). It then analyses in depth the important role that a group of art critics played as theoreticians and peers in key artistic movements from the 1950s onwards. Using their extensive international networks in the midst of the Cold War period, they decisively influenced the aesthetic and cultural debates of their time and very concretely helped shaping a completely new discourse for the avant-garde in Spain. This book discusses the creation of this new discourse that linked culture and ethics/politics and analyses its impact on the intellectual and artistic landscape (visual, print and exhibition culture) during the last decades of Franco's regime. It is indebted to a cultural historic approach that takes high culture, popular culture, politics as well as the history of ideas in account studying the reciprocal transfer processes within these fields and across European and American geographies. This study and its interdisciplinary approach will be of interest to scholars in art history, visual, cultural and museum studies of modern Spain in particular and Europe in general.

Art & Class

Ingram 出版
2024/05/04 出版

On a bright autumn day in 1857, the workers from Salts Mill in Yorkshire were waiting for special trains to take them on a day trip. But they were not going to Blackpool: they were going to The Manchester Art Exhibition which attracted 1.3 million visitors in less than six months the majority of whom were mill hands, factory workers and domestic servants. Today less than 8% of visitors to our great galleries are from the working class. When and why did the working classes stop visiting art galleries and why does this matter?Art & Class describes the advent of public art in the 18th Century, the development of national galleries in London and the explosion of regional galleries, all of which were crowded with working-class visitors. All this came to a halt in 1946 when Keynes and the Bloomsbury Group seized control of the art world by establishing the Arts Council, slashing the countrywide Art for the People budget and pouring money into opera and ballet. The same metropolitan elite, who established the Arts Council in 1946, still dominate our national galleries. Despite free opening, a range of charging and taxation policies mean that the working classes are not only being denied access to cultural capital but are subsidising the middle classes.Art is a key aspect of cultural capital which middle-class children absorb through visits to galleries and concerts, but which are beyond the reach of working-class parents. This precious commodity opens the door to the elite universities and then on to high-paying jobs but working-class graduates entering the elite professions earn 16% less than their middle-class peers. If the boards of today's galleries were more diverse and had inclusive charging and curatorial policies then, as in the Victorian era, they would attract visitors from all classes.

George R. Anthonisen: Meditations on the Human Condition is a comprehensive volume documenting the arc of Anthonisen's artistic career spanning 65 years as a figurative sculptor. Well versed in history and current events, Anthonisen (b. 1936) creates visual dialogues, primarily in bronze, that investigate the human condition and people's capacity to destroy, to create, to question, and to make noble choices. He is known for his thoughtful and sometimes haunting content and for championing the elegance and strength of the female form. Career highlights include service as sculptor in residence at the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, and exhibitions at Dartmouth College, the National Academy of Design, the Woodmere Art Museum, the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, Yale University, and the James A. Michener Art Museum. In the 1970s, Anthonisen won a national competition to execute a sculpture of Senator Ernest Gruening for the United States Capitol and Ursinus College commissioned a monumental World War II diptych from the artist. His sculpture, Death and Starvation, was installed at the World health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland in 1985. Anthonisen has lived and worked in Solebury, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, since establishing his studio there in 1971. Synagonism: Theory and Practice in Early Modern Art

Ingram 出版
2024/04/30 出版

This book explores for the first time the concept of synagonism (from "σύν", "together" and "ἀγών", "struggle") for an analysis of the productive exchanges between early modern painting, sculpture, architecture, and other art forms in theory and practice. In doing so, it builds on current insights regarding the so-called paragone debate, seeing this, however, as only one, too narrow perspective on early modern artistic production. Synagonism, rather, implies a breaking up of the schematic connections between art forms and individual senses, drawing attention to the multimediality and intersensoriality of art, as well as the relationship between image and body.

From The Streets of My Village

Ingram 出版
2024/04/29 出版

"Our son asked me news of the whole world" were my grandfather's words at the dinner table following an interview I had with him. He was 90 and I was 21. Over a period of five years prior, my paternal uncle, Riario Moniz, was inculcating in me the pride in the Moniz brand without my realizing it. I was born with a special gene that makes me love and take pride in my family and their achievements, and for that matter any Goan who has excelled in the public office. I love my family and my Goan identity. This book celebrates the heritage of the four families, specifically over the time period of our parents' generation and their antecedents. The families are the Moniz (a.k.a. Menkar) and the Menezes (a.k.a. Godd, my mother's side), both from Curtorim. On my wife Ethel's side, the Pereira family from Margao (her dad's) and the Menezes from Raia (her mum's). It is the intention of the author to guide the family members spread worldwide and future generations to "know their roots." As a convenient one-stop reference, there are chapters which capture Goa's history, geography, migration of our ancestors the Saraswats, and social and cultural aspects of Goan village life, including our village cuisine.

The Image of Sweden in the USA

Ingram 出版
2024/04/23 出版

This report examines the historical image of Sweden in the United States against the backdrop of recent debates on how Sweden is portrayed abroad. The Swedish-American relationship is important for Sweden - culturally, economically, and politically. This is highly relevant given current security concerns and Sweden's recent NATO application. The USA is also a key arena for the global dissemination of perceptions about Sweden, which is critical in today's increasingly polarized media landscape. The report does not aim to present a comprehensive overview of the entirety of American image of Sweden but focuses on events and occasions where attention to Sweden and Swedish affairs has both quantitatively intensified and qualitatively changed.

Sensing the Future

2024/04/20 出版

In the 1960s and '70s, collaborations between artists and engineers led to groundbreaking innovations in multisensory performance art that continue to resonate today. In 1966, Billy Kl羹ver and Fred Waldhauer, engineers at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey, teamed up with artists Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Whitman to form a nonprofit organization, Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.). E.A.T.'s debut event, 9 Evenings: Theatre & Engineering, integrated art, theater, and groundbreaking technology in a series of performances at the 69th Regiment Armory in Manhattan. Its second major event, the Pepsi Pavilion at Expo '70 in Osaka, Japan, presented a multisensory environment for the first world exposition held in Asia. At these events, and in the hundreds of collaborations E.A.T. facilitated in between, the participants--including John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Yvonne Rainer, and David Tudor--imagined innovative ways for art and science to intersect and enrich society. Sensing the Future tells the story of these collaborations between artists and engineers and how they led to new installations and technology-based artworks. Through the examination of films, photographs, diagrams, and artists' records from the E.A.T. archive at the Getty Research Institute, this volume provides a new perspective on multimedia art in the 1960s and '70s and highlights the ways E.A.T. pushed the role of the artist beyond the traditional art world. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the Getty Research Institute at the Getty Center from September 10, 2024, to February 23, 2025.

Our Journey through the Cork Oaks

Rob,Davies  著
Ingram 出版
2024/04/20 出版

This is our celebration of an amazing, somewhat undiscovered, wild corner of Europe where the cork oaks and holm oaks grow and give savanna character to an arid landscape that looks hard and difficult, but which glows with soft colours, azure-winged birds, and can turn into carpets of rich colours in spring. The place reverberates with big exciting wildlife - Iberian Lynx, Wild Boar, thousands of Cranes in winter, and gigantic Bustards, along with innumerable big soaring eagles and vultures. It looks wild, it acts wild and yet it is a man-made landscape: the wondrous growth forms of the trees are to a large degree pruned that way to maximise a harvest of rich acorns which fall to feed the black Iberian pigs and produce the tastiest Jam籀n in the land; the ground in between the trees is ploughed, planted and left fallow and cut back again in a gentle four year cycle of crops, flowers, grasses and shrubs leading to some of the richest plant diversities within each small area of land. And the beautiful thick, spongey, lichen-coloured bark on the Cork Oaks (which holds back the spread of fire from harming this vegetation and is playing an increasingly important role with climate change) is carefully protected and harvested every nine years when the rich red sangria-coloured trunks are laid bare and then darken to deep burgundy again over the years. Removing the bark does not kill these trees. It supports the huge cork industries of Portugal (Montados) and Spain (Dehesas). In this world where wildlife and agriculture are continually colliding we just found the harmony of people and wildlife and the inspiring paintable landscapes that we experienced across Alentejo and Extremadura a total tonic! Couple this with a trip with friends through some of the best wine regions and rural cultures and communities, tracing back many thousands of years, and you have a recipe for a great holiday.

The Boston Raphael

Ingram 出版
2024/04/19 出版

The full, inside story of how the discovery of a previously unknown painting by Raphael, the Italian Renaissance master, went from media sensation to career-destroying scandal. On the eve of its centennial celebrations in December, 1969, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts announced the acquisition of an unknown and uncatalogued painting attributed to Raphael. Boston's coup made headlines around the world. Soon afterward, an Italian art sleuth began investigating the details of the painting's export from Italy, challenged the museum's right to ownership. Simultaneously, experts on both sides of the Atlantic lined up to debate the artwork's very authenticity. While these contests played themselves out on the international stage, the crisis deepened within the museum as its charismatic director, Perry T. Rathbone, faced the most challenging crossroads of his thirty-year career. The facts about the forces that converged on the museum, and how they led to Rathbone's resignation as director, is only now fully revealed in this compelling, behind-the-scenes story that reveals how the art world, media, and museums work. This is for anyone who relishes stories of the business of art.

Children’s Emotions in Europe, 1500 - 1900

Bloomsbury 出版
2024/04/17 出版

This book gives you the historical sensation of coming face to face with the bodily expression and regulation of children's emotions over time. The study does this by encouraging you to look through the eyes of well-known artists, like Albrecht D羹rer, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Jan Steen, Antony van Dyck, Rembrandt, and Titian in early modern Europe, and Jean-Baptiste Sim矇on Chardin, Thomas Lawrence, Jean-Honor矇 Fragonard, Philipp Otto Runge, Willem Bartel van der Kooi, Paul Gauguin, Auguste Renoir, and Jozef Isra禱ls in the late 18th and 19th centuries. These sources are supplemented by works from less-famous artists, as well as popular emblem books, child-advice manuals, observations from the emerging child sciences, and personal documents. Jeroen Dekker observes children's emotions mainly in the child's world and in the domestic emotional space, and connects them with history's ongoing, underlying discourse on education and the emotions. This discourse was developed by theologians, philosophers, and moralists like Augustine, Aquinas, Erasmus, Descartes, Jacob Cats, John Locke and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, by Romantic educationalists like Friedrich Fr繹bel and Ellen Key, and by scientists like Charles Darwin and William James who emphasized the biological instead of the moral fundament of children's emotions. The story of children's emotions is told in the context of cultural movements like the Renaissance, Humanism, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, Romanticism, and the starting Age of Child Science. Children's Emotions in Europe, 1500 - 1900 crucially highlights the continuous co-existence of regulation-oriented and child-oriented educational views on children's emotions.

Rethinking Displays of Chinese Contemporary Art

Palgrave M 出版
2024/04/09 出版

This is the first edited collection to critically address in its entirety questions related to the displaying of Chinese contemporary art. It includes chapters by scholars and cultural workers from diverse backgrounds involved in the interpretation of artistic as well as curatorial discourses and practices. Each of those chapters gives a detailed account of a particular, socio-culturally informed, approach to the making and showing of Chinese art - including in relation to queer identities, transculturality, the use of social media, artivism, social engagement, institutional critique, and neo-Confucian aesthetics. Together they present a vital intervention with established curatorship amidst the intensely interconnected and increasingly multi-polar cultural conditionalities of early 21st-century contemporaneity.

Sino-Mexican Art and Cultural Exchanges in the Twentieth Century

Ingram 出版
2024/04/05 出版

Includes 66 color images. This book-written from Zheng Shengtian's unique position of an artist, curator and scholar who participated in the history he recounts-vividly chronicles all the key artistic exchanges between Mexico and China during the twentieth century and, in the process, convincingly reveals the profound and lasting influence that Mexican murals and visual art exerted on contemporary Chinese art.Through archive materials, participant observations, and interviews collected over several decades, the book illuminates a broad range of influences, from Lu Xun introducing Diego Rivera's mural paintings to China in the 1930s to the deep impact that Mexican-American cartoonist Miguel Covarrubias had on the stylistic development of China's most famous mid-twentieth century cartoonists, the dramatic talks of David Siqueiros in Beijing during the Hundred Flowers Movement, and a fascinating account of his years spent in China by the "Latin American cultural ambassador" Chilean mural artist Jos矇 Venturelli (1925-1988). These transcultural connections have led to further collaborations and mutual influences among Chinese and Mexican artists down to the present-exemplified by Zheng Shengtian's own Winds from Fusang group mural and exhibitions-and represent a key part of the global modernist movement beyond North America and Europe and address an overlooked aspect of global art history. This study blends historical reflections with lived experience while bridging the two fields of Chinese and international art scholarship. The book fills a significant research gap in our understanding of contemporary Chinese art, offering new perspectives on important issues, such as the origins of contemporary Chinese art, the variety of impacts that have shaped the development of Chinese art over the past century besides Soviet/Russian socialist realism, and the decentralized modernity embodied by global leftwing artistic interactions. The book also includes a rich collection of color images and historical photos as well as a substantial section of translated primary documents, such as interviews with key participants from both China and Latin America.Sino-Mexican Art and Cultural Exchanges in the Twentieth Century is a must read for all those who study modern Chinese and Mexican art, cultural exchanges in modern China, and the interaction of leftist art and global modernism. It provides valuable materials for teaching global art history written in an accessible language, and its biographical approach and vivid primary materials will appeal to students from undergraduate levels upwards.

Being and Neonness, Translation and content revised, augmented, and updated for this edition by Luis de Miranda

Mit Press 出版
2024/04/04 出版

A cultural and philosophical history of neon, from Paris in the twentieth century to the perpetually switched-on present day. For most of us, the word neon conjures images of lights, colors, nightlife, and streets. It evokes the poetry of city nights. For Luis de Miranda, neon is a subject of philosophical curiosity. Being and Neonness is a cultural and philosophical history of neon, from early twentieth-century Paris to the electric, perpetually switched-on present day Manhattan. It is an inspired journey through a century of night, deciphering the halos of the past and the reflections of the present to shed light on the future. Invented in Paris in 1912, neon first appeared on a modest but arresting sign outside a small barbershop; the sign lit up number 14, Boulevard Montmartre, attracting so many passersby that the barber's revenues soon doubled. A century later, neon is no longer just a sign; it is a mythic object--a metonymy of contemporary identity and a metaphor for the present, signifying the ubiquity of commerce and the tautology of hypermodernity. But perhaps the noble gas of neon whispers something more, something deeper? In ten short, poetic yet precise chapters, de Miranda explores the neon lights of the twentieth century. He considers, among other historical curiosities, the neon compulsions of the Italian Futurists; the Soviet program of "neonization"; the Nazi's deployment of neon for propaganda purposes; Baudelaire's "halo" and Benjamin's "aura"; neon as a gas and crystallized chaos; neon and power; neon and capitalism--all of this backlit by an original reading of Sartre's Being and Nothingness. This English edition has been thoroughly revised and adapted from the French edition, L'礙tre et le neon.

Ekphrasticism - Painted Words

Ingram 出版
2024/04/03 出版

Ekphrasis has generally been considered to be a rhetorical device in which one medium of art tries to relate to another medium by defining and interpreting it to the audience, through its illuminative liveliness. Through its rhetorical vividness it highlights what is happening, or what is shown and, enhances the original art, through synergy, with its description. Virtually any type of artistic medium may be the object or subject of ekphrasis. Given the right circumstances, any art may describe any other art. In this offering of "painted words" I have taken "poetic licence" firstly with the title "Ekphrasticism". Although not a word to be found in the dictionary, it seemed the perfect word for this book of ekphrastic poetry and paintings. I have taken further poetic licence with my interpretation of the visuals presented in the paintings. The artist extraordinaire of these paintings was generous enough to also allow me to rename some of the paintings to coincide with the emotions and words that came to me while viewing them. I thank Don Portelance for having such great and imaginative artistic talent and for allowing me the honour of writing to his paintings. Candice James

Empire of Images

Alyson,Roy  著
Ingram 出版
2024/03/24 出版

Rome was an empire of images, especially images that bolstered their imperial identity. Visual and material items portraying battles, myths, captives, trophies, and triumphal parades were particularly important across the Roman empire. But where did these images originate and what shaped them? Empire of Images explores the development of the Roman visual language of power in the Republic in Iberian Peninsula, the Gallic provinces, and Greece and Macedonia, centering the development of imperial imagery in overseas conquest. Drawing on a range of material evidence, this book argues that Roman imperial imagery developed through prolonged interaction with and adaptation by subjugated peoples. Despite their starring role in Roman imagery, the populations of Rome's provinces continuously reinterpreted and reimagined Roman images of power to navigate their membership in the new imperial community, and in doing so, contributed to the creation of a universal visual language that continues to shape how Rome is understood.

Appreciation Post

Tara,Ward  著
Ingram 出版
2024/03/23 出版

What does an art history of Instagram look like? Appreciation Post reveals how Instagram shifts long-established ways of interacting with images. Tara Ward argues Instagram is a structure of the visual, which includes not just the process of looking, but what can be seen and by whom. She examines features of Instagram use, including the effect of scrolling through images on a phone, the skill involved in taking an "Instagram-worthy" picture, and the desires created by following influencers, to explain how the constraints imposed by Instagram limit the selves that can be displayed on it. The proliferation of technical knowledge, especially among younger women, revitalizes on Instagram the myth of the masculine genius and a corresponding reinvigoration of a masculine audience for art. Ward prompts scholars of art history, gender studies, and media studies to attend to Instagram as a site of visual expression and social consequence. Through its insightful comparative analysis and acute close reading, Appreciation Post argues for art history's value in understanding the contemporary world and the visual nature of identity today.

Draw Them In, Paint Them Out

Ingram 出版
2024/03/22 出版

Contemporary Black artist Trenton Doyle Hancock responds to the provocative images of twentieth-century Jewish painter Philip Guston A defining figure of the New York School, Philip Guston (1913-1980) frequently alluded to racism, antisemitism, and fascism in his work. In the 1960s and 1970s, Guston, who often grappled with his Jewish identity and assimilation into American culture, controversially portrayed himself as a cartoonish Klansman to deflate the power of the Klan's hateful symbolism, as well as to acknowledge his own complicity in white supremacy. Trenton Doyle Hancock (b. 1974) is a leading contemporary artist who has looked to Guston as a source of inspiration for nearly three decades. In 2014 Hancock created a series of drawings that interweaves Guston's biography, Hancock's family history, and the history of lynching in Hancock's hometown, and introduces Hancock's avatar, a Black superhero named Torpedoboy who confronts Guston's hooded alter ego. In bringing together these two trailblazing artists from different generations, this volume situates Guston's and Hancock's works in their social and political contexts and explores the way that art, activism, and humor can deepen our understanding of the Black and Jewish experiences in the United States. The book also features Hancock in conversation with curator Valerie Cassel Oliver and award-winning author and cartoonist Art Spiegelman. Published in association with the Jewish Museum, New York Exhibition Schedule: Jewish Museum, New York (November 8, 2024-March 30, 2025)

Rebuilding St. Paul's Outside the Walls

Ingram 出版
2024/03/21 出版

In 1823, the fourth-century basilica of St. Paul's Outside the Walls in Rome was destroyed by a catastrophic fire, prompting debate as to whether, and in what style, it should be reconstructed. Two years later, Pope Leo XII made the unprecedented decision to rebuild St. Paul's as an exact replica of its predecessor, which resulted in the most expensive construction project in Rome since the early modern rebuilding of St. Peter's. In this study, Richard Wittman traces this reconstruction within the context of the Church's struggle to adapt to a radically changed and changing world. He offers new perspectives on European architectural modernity and its negotiations with the past, and problematizes received ideas about the sources and significance of architectural historicism. Proposing a new prehistory of the great Catholic revival after 1850, Wittman's study demonstrates the key role that religions motivations played in the formation of modern mentalities, and particularly the historicist component.

Aspects of emptiness in contemporary art

Ingram 出版
2024/03/20 出版

The aim here is to demonstrate that emptiness, absence, the hollow or the invisible, perceived in contemporary art, are passwords or channels for reflection on the field of immanence. Emptiness in art can be related to an existential void that cuts through the subject and tries to take shape through artistic endeavour. This emptiness can be seen as the primordial lack seen in psychoanalytic theory. What at one moment is a continent, like the void that bathes the world, in the potter's metaphor is contained, embraced - as Romagnolo's hollow sculptures do - they embrace the void, and at another moment it is referenced, indicated - as in Regina Silveira's shadows. In my work, emptiness is the subject and the motif.

The Legacy of Akhenaten and Nefertiti

Ingram 出版
2024/03/20 出版

In "The Legacy of Akhenaten and Nefertiti," author Alexander G. Hathaway embarks on a captivating exploration of one of ancient Egypt's most intriguing periods. Amidst the opulence and grandeur of the Eighteenth Dynasty emerges Akhenaten, a pharaoh whose radical reforms upend centuries of tradition. With his queen, Nefertiti, Akhenaten ushers in the Amarna Period, challenging the religious and cultural foundations of ancient Egypt by introducing the worship of the Aten, a single sun god. Hathaway delves into the complexities of this revolutionary era, from the establishment of the new capital, Akhetaten, to the profound changes in art, culture, and governance. Through meticulous research and compelling narrative, he presents a nuanced portrait of a ruler often dubbed the 'heretic king' and his equally enigmatic queen. The book navigates the tumultuous succession, from Akhenaten's reign to the restoration efforts of his successor, Tutankhamun, offering insights into the enduring legacy of a period that continues to fascinate. Drawing from the latest archaeological discoveries and academic debates, Hathaway challenges conventional perceptions, revealing the Amarna Period's lasting impact on Egyptian society and its influence on subsequent generations. "The Legacy of Akhenaten and Nefertiti" is a thought-provoking journey into the heart of ancient Egypt, shedding light on the lives of its most controversial monarchs and their attempt to redefine the divine.

Aby Warburg and the Image in Motion

Zone Books 出版
2024/03/15 出版

A compelling analysis of the work of art historian Aby Warburg and its radical implications for the study of visual images Aby Warburg (1866-1929) is best known as the originator of the discipline of iconology and as the founder of the institute that bears his name. His followers included some of the celebrated art historians of the twentieth century, such as Erwin Panofsky, Edgar Wind, and Fritz Saxl. But his heirs developed, for the most part, a domesticated iconology based on the decipherment and interpretation of symbolic material. As Philippe-Alain Michaud demonstrates in this important book, Warburg's project was remote from any positivist or neo-Kantian ambitions. Nourished on the work of Friedrich Nietzsche and Jacob Burckhardt, Warburg fashioned a "critical iconology" to reveal the irrationality of the image in Western culture. Opposing the grand teleological narratives of art inaugurated by Giorgio Vasari, Warburg's method operated through historical anachronisms and discontinuities. Using procedures of "montage-collision" he brought together pagan artifacts with masterpieces of Florentine Renaissance art, the astrology of the ancient Near East with the Lutheran Reformation, Mannerist festivals with the sacred dances of Native Americans. Michaud insists that for Warburg, the practice of art history was not only the recognition of the radical heterogeneity of objects but the discovery within the art work itself of lines of fracture, contradictions, tensions, and the energies of magic, empathy, totemism, and animism. Michaud provides us with a book that not only is about Warburg but also extends his intuitions and discoveries into analyses of other categories of imagery like the daguerreotype, the chronophotography of ?tienne-Jules Marey, early cinema, and the dances of Lo簿e Fuller. This edition also includes a foreword by Georges Didi-Huberman and texts by Warburg not previously translated into English. Chosen as one of the best art books of 2004 by the Washington Post and Bookforum.

Art and Commerce in Late Imperial Russia

Bloomsbury 出版
2024/03/12 出版

Andrey Shabanov's seminal reinterpretation of the Peredvizhniki is a comprehensive study that examines in-depth for the first time the organizational structure, self-representation, exhibitions, and critical reception of this 19th-century artistic partnership. Shabanov advances a more pragmatic reading of the Peredvizhniki, artists seeking professional and creative freedom in authoritarian Tsarist Russia. He likewise demonstrates and challenges how and why the group eventually came to be defined as a critically-minded Realist art movement. Unprecedentedly rich in new primary visual and textual sources, the book also connects afresh the Russian and Western art worlds of the period. A must-read for anyone interested in Russian art and culture, 19th-century European art, and also the history of art exhibitions, art movements, and the art market.

Yoko Ono

Ingram 出版
2024/03/08 出版

The first major retrospective of Yoko Ono in a decade foregrounds her impact on activism and invites readers to engage dynamically with her work Yoko Ono (b. 1933) firmly established herself as a leading figure in the Fluxus movement by the mid-1960s. Since that time, her multimedia practice, encompassing sculpture, film, performance, instruction, and music, has had a significant impact on the trajectory of contemporary art. The first major publication on Ono's work in more than a decade, this important volume celebrates her career at a pivotal moment and illustrates the prescient themes that the artist has long championed and that have become central to today's art practice. This handsome volume traces Ono's career across continents, beginning with the artist's early work in Tokyo. Ono's time in 1960s London is also centered, and the survey looks critically at the development of her work in that period against the more public specter of her relationship with John Lennon and The Beatles. The book then focuses a wider lens on Ono's transnational networks, including her impact on continental Europe and her extended residency in New York. Throughout her career in each of these places, Ono championed feminist, antiwar, and environmental ideas that have only grown in relevance. Drawing on key themes of audience participation, play, and music, the book also employs Ono's own words to encourage readers to experience Ono's work through actions that she finds particularly resonant: reading, enacting, imagining, and wishing. Bertram Brooker

Ingram 出版
2024/03/07 出版

The first comprehensive look at a leading figure in Canadian modernism and the many facets of his artistic creativity. Bertram Brooker (1888-1955), an associate of the Group of Seven, was a multi-disciplinary artist who was deeply engaged with the visual, literary and performing arts in Canada during the dynamic inter-war period. This was a time of dramatic change in Canadian cultural life, and Brooker was one of the artistic community's most gifted first responders. In 1927 he burst onto the Toronto art scene at the Arts and Letters Club with his painting exhibition "World and Spirit," considered to be the first show of abstract paintings in Canada. An advertising executive by day, he was inspired by music and mystical experience throughout his polymathic creative career. Brooker combined elements of abstraction and figuration as a painter, illustrator and graphic designer - the focus of this publication - and reflected myriad strains of contemporary thought in his efforts as a novelist, poet, short-story and essay writer, screenwriter, playwright, actor, musician, and as one of the most influential art critics of his day. Bertram Brooker: When We Awake! is the fully illustrated catalogue accompanying the exhibition organized by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection and curated by noted Canadian art scholar Michael Parke-Taylor, placing Brooker's career as a visual artist in the context of his wider creativity at last. It includes 150 of his paintings and drawings, a detailed chronology of his career, and new critical reflections on his trailblazing contribution to Canadian cultural life.

The Art of Pin-Up. 40th Ed.

Taschen  著
TASCHEN 出版
2024/03/07 出版

Since TASCHEN released The Great American Pin-up, international interest in this distinctly American art form has increased exponentially. Paintings by leading artists such as Alberto Vargas, George Petty, and Gil Elvgren that sold for $ 2,000 in 1996 are going for $ 200,000 and more today. Pin-up--drawings, paintings, and pastels of an idealized female face and figure intended for public display--was produced between 1920 and 1970 for calendars, magazine covers, and centerfolds. The majority of original paintings were discarded by publishers and calendar companies after printing, making the surviving art that much more precious. This attractively priced edition showcases the top 10 names in the game. Each chapter opens with a reproduction of an original calendar or magazine cover by that artist. The reproduction quality of the paintings, pastels, and preparatory sketches that follow--largely sourced from the original art--invites the viewer to trace the brushstrokes, while the exquisite period calendars, vintage prints, and original model photos document the artists' creative process. Much of these ephemera were photographed on-site at the historic Brown & Bigelow Company, home to the world's largest archive of vintage pin-up calendars.

Impressions from Paris

Ingram 出版
2024/03/04 出版

'Impressions from Paris' studies the contributions of various women artists and writers who lived in Paris during the Interwar Years, from the 1920s to 1940. The "Roaring Twenties" constituted years of experimentation and freedom to test new techniques and lifestyles at a time affected by serious political changes leading to World War II. Their trajectories have left traces that can be mapped out, studied, and addressed today, a hundred years later. The volume revisits their experiences through various lenses that include art history, gender, fashion, literary analysis, psychology, philosophy, as well as film and food. The volume revisits the artistic, literary, and journalistic contributions of women worldwide, including France, as they flocked to Paris from the 1920s to 1940. The overall principle lies in the inclusion of female painters, visual artists, and writers from diverse international and national backgrounds. Scholars who participate in the volume explore the possibilities presented in a modern literary and artistic history while building on previous scholarship. Two seminal books and a documentary film inspire this project: Shari Benstock's 'Women of the Left Bank. Paris 1900-1940' (Texas UP 1986) and Andrea Weiss's 'Paris was a woman. Portraits from the Left Bank' (HarperSanFrancisco 1995), which in turn produced an eponymous film (Greta Schiller/Andrea Weiss 1996). These works highlight the community of women artists, editors and writers during the interwar years in Paris. There is scholarship in the area, although most of it is scattered in single monographs, crossing various genres, and various languages, from (recent) graphic novels, to fiction, biographical studies, cultural histories as well as scholarly artistic and literary studies.

With Fists Raised

Ingram 出版
2024/03/03 出版

There are deep black nationalist roots for many of the images and ideologies of contemporary racial justice efforts. This collection reconsiders the Black Aesthetic and the revolutionary art of the Black Arts Movement (BAM), forging connections between the recent past and contemporary social justice activism. Focusing on black literary and visual art of the Black Arts Movement, this collection highlights artists whose work diverged from narrow definitions of the Black Aesthetic and black nationalism. Adding to the reanimation of discourses surrounding BAM, this collection comes at a time when today's racial justice efforts are mining earlier eras for their iconography, ideology, and implementation. As numerous contemporary activists ground their work in the legacies of mid-twentieth century activism and adopt many of the grassroots techniques it fostered, this collection remembers and re-envisions the art that both supported and shaped that earlier era. It furthers contemporary conversations by exploring BAM's implications for cultural and literary studies and its legacy for current social justice work and the multiple arts that support it.

How Banksy Saved Art History

Thames & H 出版
2024/03/02 出版

Few would dispute that Banksy is the most famous urban artist in the world today. That he is also a perceptive art historian might come as a surprise to many. Taken together, the myriad memorable works the street artist has created over the course of the past thirty years, constitute an audacious commentary on the history of image-making--a captivating critique waiting to be pieced together.Armed with little more than stencils, spray paint, and an anonymizing cloak of after-hours darkness, Banksy has forged an alluring identity for himself as an incorrigible prankster who doesn't embrace tradition, but shreds it. Consider Banksy and you think of grubby city walls far removed from elite galleries and privileged museums where art is conventionally shown. What actually illuminates Banksy's audacious murals, impromptu urban sculptures, and vandalized paintings, however, is a profound understanding of the story of art.Through the dark satirical lens of Banksy's mischievous reimagined masterpieces, art history is viewed anew and brought into unexpected focus. From his droll lampooning of the Lascaux cave paintings to reinventing Monet's enchanting water lily pond, a reboot of G矇ricault's tragic, gut-wrenching vision to Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring now instilled with street cred, everyone's genius is grist for his unmerciful mill. Far from being diminished in their significance, however, the works that Banksy ruthlessly parodies are ultimately refurbished by the ordeal. Banksy's iconoclastic works force us to rethink our affection for and appreciation of great works of art that define cultural history.
