The Phaist籀s disc. Printing-punching direction

Lulu.com 出版
2024/02/29 出版

The Phaist籀s disc is the oldest literary work of "Europe" The complexity of the hieroglyphic representation on the Phaist籀s disc reveals an extremely refined cultural and artistic quality. In the writer's opinion, it is of fundamental importance as indeed it represents the oldest European literary expression. It conveys a message that has come to us from the depths of time, from the beginnings of Western culture and marks the boundary between a before and an after, between prehistory and history. The search for Ariadne's thread in the quest to understand the meaning of what is transcribed there is therefore an imperative historical and cultural necessity This research was able to demonstrate how the hieroglyphic sequence of the Phaist籀s disc unfolds in a linear direction along the path of the spirals, starting from the centre towards the periphery, that is, from left to right; to end finally with the line marked with five stylus dots. The current vulgate on the right-to-left writing direction, from the outside towards the centre of the disc, deduced from 2 or 5 overlappings, is definitively overcome by two details never considered up to now: 1) the deformation of some signs, caused by the punching of the sign on their right; 2) the retouching-scratch of the intersection line between A XIV and A XIII, with the series of parallel scratch interrupted by the countersinking of the five dots, placed on the presumed opening line, which the photographic enlargement reveals instead to be the text closing line. In March 2018, by means of photographic enlargements, the author finally discovers on the Phaist籀s' disc a detail never considered by anyone, which proves in an incontrovertible way the direction of writing from left to right, from the centre to the periphery of the disc. Further and significant confirmations of the right-handed direction of writing are the word corrections, constantly retouched on the right end of the same. To this is added a detail hitherto never noticed by anyone: the combination of a two-factor system regarding the oblique stroke and the hypothesis of Minoan verses and strophes: a) ternary setting of the phrases/verses (sections) constituting a strophe, b) cadence of the oblique stroke coinciding with the initial part to the left of these sections (verses and strophes).

Joaqu穩n Sorolla Landscapes

Ingram 出版
2024/02/29 出版

Sorolla was deeply interested in the history and future of Spain. His landscapes can be seen as direct commentary to the subject matter in the landscape paintings. We travel with Sorolla generally from North to South Joaquin Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863-died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. Some of his breathtaking landscapes show how he was familiar with and employed similar techniques as the photograph. His landscapes are a great introduction to Spanish history. In the course of preparing for his grand masterpiece The Vision of Spain, which hangs in the Hispanic Society of America, Sorolla visited many places of Spain. Here he painted types of people and local dress which made up his vision of Spain, diverse and colorful yet united. Joaquin Sorolla painted many landscapes. Some of the landscapes are recordings like photographs. Others are exercises and development of his talent and technique. It is possible to follow his development as a master of impressionist painting by comparing landscapes by the year of completion. Sorolla only became better with age and maturity.

Paul Gauguin Masterpieces of Art

Ingram 出版
2024/02/25 出版

New edition of the popular introduction to Paul Gauguin, part of the Flame Tree Masterpieces of Art series Gauguin began his artistic life as an Impressionist in Paris, but yearning for a wider world view he experimented with decorative art and bright colours to create what some have termed Symbolism. He painted briefly with Van Gogh but was strongly drawn by the "otherness" of the South Pacific to which he travelled frequently, and finally settled far away from his origins and early influences to create a unique and intensely personal body of work. The new edition of this beautiful new book revels in the scenes of Tahiti, the sunlit bodies, the shapes and styles of the South Pacific each of which have secured him a unique place in the history of art.

Elizabeth Catlett

University 出版
2024/02/24 出版

A book highlighting the work of pioneering Black printmaker, sculptor, and activist Elizabeth Catlett. Accomplished printmaker and sculptor, avowed feminist, and lifelong activist Elizabeth Catlett (1915-2012) built a remarkable career around intersecting passions for formal rigor and social justice. This book, accompanying a major traveling retrospective, offers a revelatory look at the artist and her nearly century-long life, highlighting overlooked works alongside iconic masterpieces. Catlett's activism and artistic expression were deeply connected, and she protested the injustices of her time throughout her life. Her work in printmaking and sculpture draws on organic abstraction, the modernism of the United States and Mexico, and African art to center the experiences of Black and Mexican women. Catlett attended Howard University, studied with the painter Grant Wood, joined the Harlem artistic community, and worked with a leftist graphics workshop in Mexico, where she lived in exile after the US accused her of communism and barred her re-entry into her home country. The book's essays address a range of topics, including Catlett's early development as an artist-activist, the impact of political exile on her work, her pedagogical legacy, her achievement as a social realist printmaker, her work with the arts community of Chicago's South Side, and the diverse influences that shaped her practice.

Deaths of Artists

Jim,Moske  著
Blast Books 出版
2024/02/21 出版

Starving Artist Knifed to Death in Village Room... Famous Artist Dies Penniless and All Alone... Deep in the archives of The Metropolitan Museum of Art are two strange scrapbooks packed with century-old newspaper obituaries of painters, illustrators, sculptors, and photographers, famous and forgotten alike. Somber death notices of luminaries like Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin are preserved on their crumbling pages, side by side with tragic and often grisly stories of obscure artists who met their demise as victims of accident, murder, poverty, and disease. Compiled from 1906 to 1929, the scrapbooks not only memorialize the subjects of these obituaries: they also record graphic and sensationalized news reporting from the heyday of yellow journalism. Who collected the artists' obituaries? What was their purpose for the Met Museum? Were the scrapbooks assembled in a nod to Giorgio Vasari's bestselling sixteenth-century magnum opus, Lives of the Artists, with its hundreds of gossipy artist biographies? When Met Museum archivist Jim Moske chanced upon these fascinating relics forgotten in museum storage, he set out to unravel the mystery of their creation.Delving into Met employee records, Moske discovered the story of Arthur D'Hervilly, an ex-convict and aspiring artist who was hired in 1894 as a museum guard. By the twilight of his museum career, D'Hervilly had risen to assistant curator of paintings. Occasionally, he was also called upon to serve as the Met media officer. It was apparently in this capacity that in the summer of 1906, he decided to order the National Press Intelligence clipping service to send him any and all U.S. newspaper stories about the deaths of artists. By the time he died thirteen years later, he had assembled a massive chronicle of reportage. D'Hervilly's colleagues dutifully carried on adding to the scrapbooks until 1929, leaving behind more than three hundred pages crammed with thousands of obituaries.Deaths of Artists intertwines D'Hervilly's peculiar biography with heart-wrenching, bizarre, outlandish, and darkly comic stories of artists, both successful and abject. Moske's meticulously researched narrative is illustrated with full-page images of scrapbook pages, details of shocking obituary headlines, paintings and sculptures by the artist-subjects, and unique documents from the Met archives. The deaths of artists, seen in the light of their uncommon lives, add up to much more than just a litany of sad endings. This eerie glimpse into a dark side of art history and creative practice illuminates the unique challenges artists face, exceptional risks they take, and the cruel turns of fate that often thwart their efforts.

Animation Between Magic, Miracles and Mechanics

Ingram 出版
2024/02/20 出版

When it comes to images, we are all animists. Deep down, we all know that images can - at least potentially - be alive or come to life. Nowadays, we may tend to rationalize our ingrained animism and explain it away as a mere projection only happening in the space between image and viewer. In the Middle Ages, however, imagery made enthusiastic use of magical, miraculous and mechanical means of animation, empowered and ensouled by both natural and supernatural principles of life. This animist book investigates magic, miracles and mechanics as motors of animation and seeks to understand the living image in solidarity with medieval experience rather than dismissive alienation of it. Effigies did bleed, weep or lactate, either through divine intervention or through hydraulic machinery. Statues did move or speak, either as demonic oracles or as talking heads with implanted speaking tubes. Marvels made by magic or by miracles were real, as real as the wonders of physical mechanics moving bodily matter. We just need to look and listen more carefully to comprehend these fluid realities, even when - especially when - they challenge our received worldview. Animation was by no means uncontested or uncontradicted, but even its stiffest critics knew that gods and demons could intervene in inanimate matter to set it in motion, to speak in tongues and exude the liquids of life.

Women, Art, Freedom

Ingram 出版
2024/02/15 出版

Women, Art, Freedom offers an insightful look at the 2022 Woman, Life, Freedom uprising in Iran, sparked by the tragic murder of Jina Mahsa Amini at the hands of the "morality police" for violating hijab rules. Beyond its feminist undertones and the remarkable courage of the young protesters, what sets this uprising apart from previous ones is the abundant and diverse art it has inspired. This book, rather than merely analyzing the artworks that garnered attention on social media platforms, brings to light lesser-known grassroots artistic movements that played a crucial role within their immediate local communities. Engaging with primarily Iran-based artists, it uncovers their role in shaping guerrilla interventions and street occupations and in articulating distinct forms of peaceful civil disobedience. By drawing on a broad spectrum of historical and theoretical sources, this book further reveals the origins and inspirations of Iran's protest art. Focusing mainly on the interconnections between the public sphere, women's bodies, and feminist viewpoints, Women, Art, Freedom underscores the vital role of artists in championing global justice and equality. This book will be made open access within three years of publication thanks to Path to Open.

Leonardo, Frida and the Others

2024/02/13 出版

This fresh and engaging, illustrated history of art explains the fundamentals every art lover needs while presenting the development of different schools and styles as one continuous, astonishing timeline-- from Giotto to Leonardo, Frida to Banksy. When she became interested in painting, the author would visit museums and wonder about all the information she was missing. How did one style develop after another? What meanings were hidden in these works? What were these artists' lives like? How did their works survive for so many years? She longed for the kind of essential knowledge that would enable her to decode a painting loaded with references. The result of her curiosity is a highly accessible and vividly illustrated book that brings together the fundamentals of eight centuries of art. It covers the basics about such topics as how museums are structured, how painters use proportion and perspective, the anatomy of a painting.Jouneaux offers surprising comparisons between artists such as Sandro Botticelli and Mary Cassatt, Claude Monet and Joan Mitchell, Delacroix and Rubens. Terms such as Baroque, Ukiyo-e, Graffiti, Cubism, Degenerate Art, and De Stijl are explored and explained. Non-western traditions are given much greater prominence than in other art history books - Chinese, Indian, Australian Aboriginal, and African Art are all included in the timeline. Numerous women artists who were overlooked during the author's own education are restored to the canon. Accompanying the unpretentious but authoritative texts are hundreds of illustrations, reproductions, timelines and sidebars.

Art in America was written for The English Review in 1913, this essay perhaps says more about Crowley than American art. It was much criticised by contemporary American artists for its prejudice and unfairness. Crowley says in The Confessions that his judgements of past American art was severe, but that he had planned other, more positive essays dealing with the present and its future. The essays lasting value is largely historical, how differently things have come to look in the intervening one hundred years.

Africanfuturism

Ohio Unive 出版
2024/02/10 出版

In the past few decades, Western studies of Afrofuturism have grown to encompass examples deriving from multiple sites across the diaspora, as well as from the African continent. However, an increasing number of Africans and Africanists have voiced their concerns about grouping African work under the larger umbrella of Afrofuturism without distinction and have emphasized the need to investigate the differences between African American and African production. This book offers an introduction to Africanfuturism--a body of African speculative works that is distinguishable from, albeit related to, US-based Afrofuturism. Kimberly Cleveland uses Africanfuturism as an intellectual lens to explore works that embody combinations of possibilities, challenges, and concerns related to what lies ahead for the continent and its peoples. This book highlights twenty-first-century film, video, painting, sculpture, photography, tapestry, novels, short stories, comic books, song lyrics, and architecture by African creatives of different nationalities, races, ethnicities, genders, and generations. Cleveland analyzes the ideas and opinions of African intellectuals and cultural producers, combining interviews with historical research. Each chapter features one of Africanfuturism's most common themes: space and time exploration, creation of worlds, technology and the digital divide, Sankofa and remix, and mythmaking. This investigation of Africanfuturism is geared toward students, academics, and Afrofuturism enthusiasts, and its included discussion questions facilitate classroom use. The book illuminates Africa's place in the worlds of science fiction and fantasy and how Africanfuturist work builds on the continent's own traditions of speculative expression. Because these creative works disrupt the history of Western domination in Africa, Cleveland also connects Africanfuturism with the process of decolonization and addresses specific ways in which African creatives (re)center indigenous beliefs, strategies, and approaches in their production. Africanfuturism encourages both imaginative possibilities and potential real-world outcomes, highlighting the rich contributions of Africans to the vision of future worlds.

Featuring work by Sonia Boyce, Maya Lin, Julie Mehretu, Shirin Neshat, Adrian Piper, Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, and many others, All These Liberations draws out the intimate connections among artist, collector, and the social worlds that surround them. How Divine Images Became Art

Oleg,Tarasov  著
Ingram 出版
2024/02/09 出版

How Divine Images Became Art tells the story of the parallel 'discovery' of Russian medieval art and of the Italian 'primitives' at the beginning of the twentieth century. While these two developments are well-known, they are usually studied in isolation. Tarasov's study has the great merit of showing the connection between the art world in Russia and the West, and its impact in the cultural history of the continent in the pre-war period.Drawing on a profound familiarity with Russian sources, some of which are little known to Western scholars, and on equally expert knowledge of Western material and scholarship, Oleg Tarasov presents a fresh perspective on early twentieth-century Russian and Western art. The author demonstrates that during the Belle ?poque, the interest in medieval Russian icons and Italian 'primitives' lead to the recognition of both as distinctive art forms conveying a powerful spiritual message. Formalist art theory and its influence on art collecting played a major role in this recognition of aesthetic and moral value of 'primitive' paintings, and was instrumental in reshaping the perception of divine images as artworks.Ultimately, this monograph represents a significant contribution to our understanding of early twentieth-century art; it will be of interest to art scholars, students and anyone interested in the spiritual and aesthetic revival of religious paintings in the Belle ?poque.

Hiroshige & Eisen. the Sixty-Nine Stations Along the Kisokaido. 40th Ed.

TASCHEN 出版
2024/02/08 出版

The Kisokaidō route through Japan was ordained in the early 1600s by the country's then-ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu, who decreed that staging posts be installed along the length of the arduous passage between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Inns, shops, and restaurants were established to provide sustenance and lodging to weary travelers. In 1835, renowned woodblock print artist Keisai Eisen was commissioned to create a series of works to chart the Kisokaidō journey. After producing 24 prints, Eisen was replaced by Utagawa Hiroshige, who completed the series of 70 prints in 1838.Both Eisen and Hiroshige were master print practitioners. In The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaidō, we find the artists' distinct styles as much as their shared expertise. From the busy starting post of Nihonbashi to the castle town of Iwamurata, Eisen opts for a more muted palette but excels in figuration, particularly of glamorous women, and relishes snapshots of activity along the route, from shoeing a horse to winnowing rice. Hiroshige demonstrates his mastery of landscape with grandiose and evocative scenes, whether it's the peaceful banks of the Ota River, the forbidding Wada Pass, or a moonlit ascent between Yawata and Mochizuki.Taken as a whole, The Sixty-Nine Stations collection represents not only a masterpiece of woodblock practice, including bold compositions and an experimental use of color, but also a charming tapestry of 19th-century Japan, long before the specter of industrialization. This TASCHEN volume is sourced from one of the finest surviving first editions and revives the series in our compact anniversary edition.

Ottoman Architecture

Mary,Roberts  著
Ingram 出版
2024/02/06 出版

Ottoman Architecture is the first modern history of this architectural tradition commissioned by the Ottoman state, yet it is little known outside the field of late Ottoman studies. Produced for the Vienna World's Fair in 1873, this magnificently illustrated volume endeavoured to define what was distinctive about Ottoman culture and codifies the empire's 600-year architectural history into a series of developmental stages, emphasising the efflorescence of the Ottoman classical tradition during the sixteenth century. Composed at a formative moment when the Ottoman Empire was striving to conceive of its modernity in relation to other empires in Europe and Asia, the authors carefully position this imperial architectural legacy in relation to other modernising projects in the late Ottoman Empire. This new translation is accompanied by a scholarly introduction that contextualises its visual and historiographic significance.

Santa Fe Bohemia (Hardcover)

Eli,Levin  著
2024/02/03 出版

By the early 1970s, an active bohemian colony had developed in Santa Fe and it became a cultural boom town. The number of art galleries went from two to a hundred. Besides the Santa Fe Opera, there came into being endless festivals: for art, music, literature, theater, movies, fashion, and the crafts of Indians and Spanish Americans. The city's complex heritage of three interlocked cultures became "Santa Fe Style." But the fifteen years between 1964 and 1980 held a special magic. And Eli Levin experienced it all: the fading generation of older artists and the newly arriving younger generation; wild night life at Claude's Bar; artist's battles with conservative arts organizations; questionable successes and tragic failure of careers; exemplary examples of lifetime dedication; and a number of suppressed scandals, one even involving possible murders. Packed with amusing anecdotes about the various artists with whom Levin painted, plotted and partied, this vivid memoir testifies to the exciting rebirth and burgeoning growth of one of this country's most well known art colonies. Eli Levin, the son of novelist Meyer Levin, is known for his paintings of Santa Fe night life. He has run art galleries, written art reviews and taught art history. He hosts two artist's gatherings, a drawing group since 1969 and the Santa Fe Etching Club since 1980. Levin studied painting with Raphael Soyer, George Grosz and Robert Beverly Hale, among others, and has Master's degrees from Wisconsin University and St. John's College.

Cultural Exchanges and Colonial Legacies in Latin America

2024/02/01 出版

Winner of the Klaus Heyne Award for Research in German Romanticism*Includes 47 imagesIn the nineteenth century, a cluster of German Romantic artists and naturalists including Johann Moritz Rugendas, Carl Alexander Simon, Otto Grashof, Theodor Ohlsen, Eduard Poeppig, and Rudolph Amandus Philippi, embarked on different journeys to Chile, a newly liberated country characterized by untamed landscapes, overwhelming nature, and an important diversity of people. This study is the first scholarly attempt to critically explore the unfolding of German Romanticism in Chile, delving into the motivations and experiences of these six explorers as they ventured across the sea, the Andes, the secluded jungles of southern Chile, and the Atacama Desert to portray the country's people, landscapes, and nature. This book challenges conventional interpretations of German Romanticism as a purely emotional and spiritualized crusade, arguing for a more nuanced understanding that takes into account the complexities of this cultural movement in a foreign setting, offering a critical analysis of its impact on the depiction of Chile within the broader program of Western modernity imposed outside of Europe. The central argument of this book is that the activities and depictions of these artists and naturalists, far from being mere artistic pursuits, expressed a desire for expansion in multiple dimensions-spatial, economic, cultural, and scientific-ultimately driven by a mighty colonial impulse. Thus, in their quest for exploration and artistic inspiration, they projected their anxieties, obsessions, and hegemonic ideas about race, class, Europeanness, indigeneity, territorial appropriation, and nature, reflecting their own cultural and personal agendas.By examining the impact of German Romanticism on the depiction of Chile and the convergence of scientism, Romanticism, and colonialism, this publication seeks to shed new light on the intricate cultural exchanges between Germany and Latin America during a century consumed by ideas of progress, evolution, and the systematic categorization of nature, offering a new perspective on this subject matter.Cultural Exchanges and Colonial Legacies in Latin America: German Romanticism in Chile, 1800-1899 serves as a first introduction to this unfathomed topic, standing as a significant and essential reference for individuals engaged in academic research, students, and general readers intrigued by art history, visual culture, colonialism, Romanticism, and Latin American studies. This book is in the Cambria Latin American Literatures and Cultures Series headed by Rom獺n de la Campa, the Edwin B. and Lenore R. Williams Professor Emeritus of Romance Languages at the University of Pennsylvania.

Advance of the Rear Guard

2024/01/27 出版

A fresh and radical view of Los Angeles art in the 1960s. Los Angeles art of the past is a treasure trove, awaiting full excavation. Scratch the surface of LA art in the 1960s, and what you'll discover is much more than Ed Ruscha and Robert Irwin. A range of lesser-known artists reflected the social and cultural changes of that volatile decade. Hiding in plain sight have been offbeat and lyrical works by an ethnically diverse group of artists who exhibited with a 1960s gallery with an alternative take on the mainstream, the Ceeje Gallery. Ceeje opened as the dream project of a gay couple, Cecil Hedrick and Jerry Jerome, and focused on painters who shared an expressionist style of mythic figuration and oblique narrative. This book offers a celebration of the gallery's inclusiveness and unique aesthetic, which included artists from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives, all united in making challenging art oblivious of the commercial market.

Hannah H繹ch

2024/01/27 出版

Hannah H繹ch (1889-1978) moved between differing worlds: as an editorial assistant with a major Berlin-based magazine publisher, and as the only woman who could hold her own in the German capital's vibrant Dada scene of the 1920s. Her works dissected a world marked by the catastrophe of the Great War and an intense consumer culture, and reassembled it in revolutionary, poetic, and often ironic ways. Scissors and glue were the weapons of her art of montage, of which she was a coinventor. Cutting and montage also shaped film, still a new medium in the 1920s, which strongly influenced H繹ch's art: she understood her assembled pictures as static films. This richly illustrated and expertly annotated book explores comprehensively for the first time H繹ch's life-long fascination with film and the visual culture of the modern industrial age. Covering her entire career, It demonstrates how montage evolved in a field of tension between artistic experimentation, commercial exploitation, and political appropriation. A text on photomontage by H繹ch, written in 1948, and a text-collage on the history of montage, in which major protagonists of Modernism and Avant-garde have their say, round out this volume.

2024/01/26 出版

A rich reappraisal of a key Black American modernist through a lens of cross-cultural engagement Sargent Claude Johnson (1888-1967) was the first Black modernist on the West Coast to gain national acclaim. His artistic practice, forged in California, drew from a range of international influences, including traditional and contemporary arts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, particularly Mexican modernism and Indigenous pottery techniques. Spanning the Black Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Johnson's career was devoted to sensitive, ennobling portrayals of people of color. Though best known as a sculptor, he worked expertly in a broad range of media--from painting and printmaking to enamelwork and ceramics--each illuminating his multifaceted identity as an artist. In this catalogue, leading scholars examine Johnson's artistic evolution and offer fresh perspectives on his work. From sculptures of underrepresented subjects to majestic architectural commissions--including a celebrated mural reproduced in lavish gatefold format--the book positions Johnson's oeuvre within an expansive framework of global modernism. Distributed for the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens Exhibition Schedule: Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens (February 17-May 20, 2024)

A Flight of Dreams

Lulu.com 出版
2024/01/26 出版

Eugene V. Smith as a youth became infatuated with flying. His art began in grade school, but his passion was always to become a pilot. As he grew his dreams grew also. During the Korean War "Gene" the name he was known as enrolled in pilot training and was denied due to his vision. From here his flying returned to his other passions, music, and art. This volume is a compilation of his dreams. Later in life Gene exhibited his art selling paintings at annual art guild exhibits and concluding with an art exhibit in Paris. A final dream of Gene's was to publish a comic book which was sent in to one publisher and denied. Sadly, Gene did not fulfill his dreams of flying or seeing his comic book come to life. We; his widow, children, and the art world lost Gene in 2009. Today we offer this book of his dreams taking flight through his art. One final note: the one man exhibit in Paris: that was located in Paris, Illinois at the art gallery and museum known today as The Link Art Gallery!

NFT related art and the concept of the artist in a historical perspective

Lisa,Wolf  著
Ingram 出版
2024/01/24 出版

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Art - History of Art, grade: 1,7, LMU Munich (Kunstgeschichte), language: English, abstract: Since 2021, NFTs (non-fungible token) have conquered the public and the (art)world with headlines found its way into international headlines. The sale of Everydays: The First 5000 Days has made Beeple the third most valuable living artist, behind Jeff Koons and David Hockney, displacing Gerhard Richter from the Top 3. Kolja Reichert, art critic and curator, critically questions in one of his articles the most expensive illustrator and thereby points to a significant problem. The crypto market, originally part of online trading, had until then mainly dealt with sports trading cards, fan merchandise and products from the gaming industry. With the entry of NFTs into the traditional auction system, the collective name "NFT art" has formed, without quality standards, entry barriers, or criticism. Based on this problem, this Bachelor thesis deals with the overarching question of what makes an NFT creator an artist and how does this concept of an artist relate to historical concepts of artists. To answer these questions, case studies of two NFTs will be conducted. While their producers have very different artistic backgrounds, both NFTs were auctioned at renowned auction houses in 2021. Starting from the overarching question, these two examples will be used to examine whether the work can be related to historical concepts of artists, to what extent NFT technology has created a new concept of the artist, and if there are features outside of NFT technology that connect these two artworks.

Art of Penobscot Bay

Carl,Little  著
2024/01/19 出版

Glorious Penobscot Bay, on the coast of Maine, with its quaint mainland towns, bustling tourist centers, and island fishing villages, stands as the backdrop of daydreams. The bay's sheer beauty has attracted generation after generation of artists to its shores. For Art of Penobscot Bay, brothers David and Carl Little, well-known stewards of Maine art, have selected art and artists, from history and today, that celebrate the myriad of inlets, islands, coves, and peninsulas--the "nooks and corners" of the region. Above all, they sought out art infused with a remarkable representation of place by more than 120 artists who have embraced the area and its people. Art of Penobscot Bay includes artists from the 19th century through the 21st century, including Fitz Henry Lane, Waldo Peirce, Edward Hopper, William Zorach, John Marin, Emily Muir, Greta Van Campen, Alex Katz, Eric Hopkins, and Amy Peters Wood. Combined with text by the Little brothers, the art takes readers on a wondrous visual journey around, across, and through a breathtaking bay.

Why the Enlightenment Matters

Ingram 出版
2024/01/18 出版

For all the challenges we face in the modern world, those of us in first world democracies live lives which have seemed miraculous to our forebears of a few centuries ago. With modern medical science, we can easily treat injuries and illnesses which used to be fatal. We have plentiful food, rights to freedom of speech and religion, access to public education, and can vote for our leaders. We still have a long way to go to free ourselves of injustice, poverty and want, but no human societies have ever gone further. Why the Enlightenment Matters goes back to the seventeenth century to explore how we broke out of old ways of thinking to move towards the scientific method, industrial revolution, liberal democracy, and human rights. Looking back, it's easy to see these developments as inevitable. In reality, huge barriers stood in the path of progress.Today, with the world grappling with the rise of new forms of authoritarianism and the re-emergence of old ones, it is more important than ever to understand what makes our societies successful. And, from that, how we can confidently face the threats of the future.

An Ordinary Man's Extraordinary Journey

Mark,Collins  著
Ingram 出版
2024/01/12 出版

From a doting dad to determined humanitarian, Mark Collins has leveraged his challenges into philanthropic success. Founder of YOUschool, a learning organisation with the purpose of helping young people choose their best path in life, it is Mark's lived experiences that help him give children the best opportunities to enjoy happy, loving, and joyful lives through to adulthood. It is from his son, Max, that Mark draws inspiration. After being diagnosed with epilepsy at age five, Max has spent the last seven years in and out of hospitals - his dad by his side every step of the way. Mark has spent this time learning everything he can about his son's condition, raising money, and promoting awareness for epilepsy. It was his son's illness that spurred Mark to focus on his own health and wellbeing, recognising the direct effect and influence that the energy of others had on his son's symptoms. Mark began regularly practising meditation, yoga and eating natural foods with Max as a way of assisting him in his treatment. Max's seizure count went from sometimes over 50 per day to consistently zero with an energetic approach rather than a physical one. From neuro linguistic techniques and hypnosis to toxin removal and cranio-sacral adjustments, Mark and Max found their own way forward after being told that this was just how Max is, there is nothing other than the medication he takes. This book was written as the events in them played out over a two-year period. It is a blend of parenting advice, health and wellness techniques and a real life story of unconditional love and dedication between a father and son.

Sketches of the history of art in Mexico

Ingram 出版
2024/01/09 出版

Mexico hides numerous treasures of great architectural and artistic value that have survived time to tell us a story. The men and women who have inhabited it have been able to imagine the future by creating artistic works that transcend and occupy their own space in the universal heritage, thus awakening the admiration of the whole world. The journey presented in these pages runs parallel to the trajectory of those individuals dedicated body and soul to express themselves through art in any of its disciplines. It is for this reason that this research arises to establish a permanent dialogue between the history of Mexico, its social, political and cultural changes, and between the artists themselves and the works; also between Mexican art and the art generated by foreign hands that adopted the country as their own. And above all, to document the creativity, the talent and the Mexican plastic production of yesterday and today.

Art, Observation, and an Anthropology of Illustration

Max,Carocci  著
Ingram 出版
2024/01/09 出版

Art, Observation, and an Anthropology of Illustration examines the role of sketches, drawings and other artworks in our understanding of human cultures of the past.Bringing together art historians and anthropologists, it presents a selection of detailed case studies of various bodies of work produced by non-Western and Western artists from different world regions and from different time periods (from Native North America, Cameroon, and Nepal, to Italy, Solomon Islands, and Mexico) to explore the contemporary relevance and challenges implicit in artistic renditions of past peoples and places. In an age when identities are partially constructed on the basis of existing visual records, the book asks important questions about the nature of observation and the inclusion of culturally-relevant information in artistic representations. How reliable are watercolours, paintings, or sketches for the understanding of past ways of life? How do old images of bygone peoples relate to art historical and anthropological canons? How have these images and technologies of representation been used to describe, illustrate, or explain unknown realities? The book is an essential tool for art historians, anthropologists, and anyone who wants to understand how the observation of different realities has impacted upon the production of art and visual cultures. Incorporating current methodological and theoretical tools, the 10 chapters collected here expand the area of connection between the disciplines of art history and anthropology, bringing into sharp focus the multiple intersections of objectivity, evidence, and artistic licence.

The Lost Generation La Generaci籀n Perdida

Ingram 出版
2024/01/06 出版

An examination of the balance between modernity and tradition in Cuba's turn-of-the-century artistic evolution. The Lost Generation La generaci籀n perdida accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College. The modern artistic ceramic movement in Cuba, almost exclusively comprised of women artists (including Amelia Pel獺ez, Mirta Garc穩a Buch, and Mar穩a Elena Jubr穩as), emerged toward the end of the 1940s and continued into the next decade. The ceramicists invited Cuba's modernist protagonists, including Ren矇 Portocarrero, Luis Mart穩nez Pedro, and Wifredo Lam, to participate in designing ceramics at the Taller de Santiago de Las Vegas. The workshop thus became a locus for the fermentation of Cuban modernist expression. Juan Miguel Rodr穩guez de la Cruz, the workshop's proprietor, recognized the artistic value of the ceramicists' production and he, along with the women he hired, encouraged collaboration with their male contemporaries. A symbiotic artistic practice grew in which the ceramicists introduced ideas and designs to the painters, whose fledgling attempts in ceramics took eventual flight. As the painters' familiarity with the new medium grew, similar forms appeared in their two-dimensional renderings, which are now synonymous with Cuban modernism. During the post-Revolutionary period of 1959-85, the Taller became part of Cuba's National Patrimony, continuing the tradition of producing serial and artistic pieces. As the Revolutionary regime wore on, the Taller's importance waned, artists left Cuba, and independent workshops flourished. While the Taller de Santiago no longer boasts importance in artistic production today, it left an indelible mark on Cuban modernism. With essays by Cuban, American, and Cuban-American scholars, The Lost Generation La generaci籀n perdida provides a background on the twentieth-century avant-garde movements in Cuba; delves into the narrative of an overlooked group of Cuban women ceramicists, assessing the implications of their work on modernism; and, finally, explores in depth the women artists of the third avant-garde generation (1949-58).

The Artist at Home

Imogen,Racz  著
Ingram 出版
2024/01/04 出版

Artists have worked from home for many reasons, including care duties, financial or political constraints, or availability and proximity to others. From the 'home studios' of Charles and Ray Eames, to the different photographic representations of Robert Rauschenberg's studio, this book explores the home as a distinct site of artistic practice, and the traditions and developments of the home studio as concept and space throughout the 20th and into the 21st century.Using examples from across Europe and the Anglophone world between the mid-20th century and the present, each chapter considers the different circumstances for working at home, the impact on the creative lives of the artists, their identities as artists and on the work itself, and how, sometimes, these were projected and promoted through photographs and the media. Key themes include the gendered and performative aspects of women practising 'at home', collaborative studio communities of the 1970s - 90s including the appropriation of abandoned spaces in East London, and the effects of Covid on artistic practices and family life within the spaces of 'home'. The book comprises full-length chapters by artists, architects, art and design historians, each of whom bring different perspectives to the issues, interwoven with short interviews with artists to enrich and broaden the debates. At a time when individual relationships to home environments have been radically altered, The Artist at Home considers why some artists in previous decades either needed to or chose to work from home, producing work of vitality and integrity. Tracing this long tradition into the present, the book will provide a deeper understanding of how the home studio has affected the practices and identity of artists working in different countries, and in different circumstances, from the mid-20th century to the present.

Why Surrealism Matters

Ingram 出版
2023/12/22 出版

An elegant consideration of the Surrealist movement as a global phenomenon and why it continues to resonate "Mr. Polizzotti carefully balances the movement's aspirations and attainments against its flaws and contradictions, hoping to recuperate Surrealism's 'critical and imaginative essence' for the present. . . . The best concise account of the movement available."--Michael Saler, Wall Street Journal Selected by Art in America as an "Essential Book About Surrealism" Why does Surrealism continue to fascinate us a century after Andr矇 Breton's Manifesto of Surrealism? How do we encounter Surrealism today? Mark Polizzotti vibrantly reframes the Surrealist movement in contemporary terms and offers insight into why it continues to inspire makers and consumers of art, literature, and culture. Polizzotti shows how many forms of popular media can thank Surrealism for their existence, including Monty Python, Theatre of the Absurd, and trends in fashion, film, and literature. While discussing the movement's iconic figures--including Andr矇 Breton, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dal穩, Ren矇 Magritte, Man Ray, and Dorothea Tanning--he also broadens the traditionally French and male-focused narrative, constructing a more diverse and global representation. And he addresses how the Surrealists grappled with ideas that mirror current concerns, including racial and economic injustice, sexual politics, issues of identity, labor unrest, and political activism. Why Surrealism Matters provides a concise, engaging exploration of how, a century later, the "Surrealist revolution" remains as dynamic as ever.
