The Phaist籀s disc. Printing-punching direction
The Phaist籀s disc is the oldest literary work of "Europe" The complexity of the hieroglyphic representation on the Phaist籀s disc reveals an extremely refined cultural and artistic quality. In the writer's opinion, it is of fundamental importance as indeed it represents the oldest European literary expression. It conveys a message that has come to us from the depths of time, from the beginnings of Western culture and marks the boundary between a before and an after, between prehistory and history. The search for Ariadne's thread in the quest to understand the meaning of what is transcribed there is therefore an imperative historical and cultural necessity This research was able to demonstrate how the hieroglyphic sequence of the Phaist籀s disc unfolds in a linear direction along the path of the spirals, starting from the centre towards the periphery, that is, from left to right; to end finally with the line marked with five stylus dots. The current vulgate on the right-to-left writing direction, from the outside towards the centre of the disc, deduced from 2 or 5 overlappings, is definitively overcome by two details never considered up to now: 1) the deformation of some signs, caused by the punching of the sign on their right; 2) the retouching-scratch of the intersection line between A XIV and A XIII, with the series of parallel scratch interrupted by the countersinking of the five dots, placed on the presumed opening line, which the photographic enlargement reveals instead to be the text closing line. In March 2018, by means of photographic enlargements, the author finally discovers on the Phaist籀s' disc a detail never considered by anyone, which proves in an incontrovertible way the direction of writing from left to right, from the centre to the periphery of the disc. Further and significant confirmations of the right-handed direction of writing are the word corrections, constantly retouched on the right end of the same. To this is added a detail hitherto never noticed by anyone: the combination of a two-factor system regarding the oblique stroke and the hypothesis of Minoan verses and strophes: a) ternary setting of the phrases/verses (sections) constituting a strophe, b) cadence of the oblique stroke coinciding with the initial part to the left of these sections (verses and strophes).

He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. In the course of preparing for his grand masterpiece The Vision of Spain, which hangs in the Hispanic Society of America, Sorolla visited many places of Spain. Here he painted types of people and local dress which made up his vision of Spain, diverse and colorful yet united. Joaquin Sorolla painted many landscapes. Some of the landscapes are recordings like photographs. Others are exercises and development of his talent and technique. It is possible to follow his development as a master of impressionist painting by comparing landscapes by the year of completion. Sorolla only became better with age and maturity.

Deep in the archives of The Metropolitan Museum of Art are two strange scrapbooks packed with century-old newspaper obituaries of painters, illustrators, sculptors, and photographers, famous and forgotten alike. Somber death notices of luminaries like Claude Monet and Auguste Rodin are preserved on their crumbling pages, side by side with tragic and often grisly stories of obscure artists who met their demise as victims of accident, murder, poverty, and disease. Compiled from 1906 to 1929, the scrapbooks not only memorialize the subjects of these obituaries: they also record graphic and sensationalized news reporting from the heyday of yellow journalism. Who collected the artists' obituaries? What was their purpose for the Met Museum? Were the scrapbooks assembled in a nod to Giorgio Vasari's bestselling sixteenth-century magnum opus, Lives of the Artists, with its hundreds of gossipy artist biographies? When Met Museum archivist Jim Moske chanced upon these fascinating relics forgotten in museum storage, he set out to unravel the mystery of their creation.Delving into Met employee records, Moske discovered the story of Arthur D'Hervilly, an ex-convict and aspiring artist who was hired in 1894 as a museum guard. Animation Between Magic, Miracles and Mechanics
When it comes to images, we are all animists. Deep down, we all know that images can - at least potentially - be alive or come to life. Nowadays, we may tend to rationalize our ingrained animism and explain it away as a mere projection only happening in the space between image and viewer. In the Middle Ages, however, imagery made enthusiastic use of magical, miraculous and mechanical means of animation, empowered and ensouled by both natural and supernatural principles of life. This animist book investigates magic, miracles and mechanics as motors of animation and seeks to understand the living image in solidarity with medieval experience rather than dismissive alienation of it. Effigies did bleed, weep or lactate, either through divine intervention or through hydraulic machinery. Statues did move or speak, either as demonic oracles or as talking heads with implanted speaking tubes. Marvels made by magic or by miracles were real, as real as the wonders of physical mechanics moving bodily matter. We just need to look and listen more carefully to comprehend these fluid realities, even when - especially when - they challenge our received worldview. Animation was by no means uncontested or uncontradicted, but even its stiffest critics knew that gods and demons could intervene in inanimate matter to set it in motion, to speak in tongues and exude the liquids of life.

It was much criticised by contemporary American artists for its prejudice and unfairness. Crowley says in The Confessions that his judgements of past American art was severe, but that he had planned other, more positive essays dealing with the present and its future. The essays lasting value is largely historical, how differently things have come to look in the intervening one hundred years.

In the past few decades, Western studies of Afrofuturism have grown to encompass examples deriving from multiple sites across the diaspora, as well as from the African continent. However, an increasing number of Africans and Africanists have voiced their concerns about grouping African work under the larger umbrella of Afrofuturism without distinction and have emphasized the need to investigate the differences between African American and African production. Hiroshige & Eisen. the Sixty-Nine Stations Along the Kisokaido. 40th Ed.
The Kisokaidō route through Japan was ordained in the early 1600s by the country's then-ruler Tokugawa Ieyasu, who decreed that staging posts be installed along the length of the arduous passage between Edo (present-day Tokyo) and Kyoto. Inns, shops, and restaurants were established to provide sustenance and lodging to weary travelers. In 1835, renowned woodblock print artist Keisai Eisen was commissioned to create a series of works to chart the Kisokaidō journey. After producing 24 prints, Eisen was replaced by Utagawa Hiroshige, who completed the series of 70 prints in 1838.Both Eisen and Hiroshige were master print practitioners. In The Sixty-Nine Stations along the Kisokaidō, we find the artists' distinct styles as much as their shared expertise. From the busy starting post of Nihonbashi to the castle town of Iwamurata, Eisen opts for a more muted palette but excels in figuration, particularly of glamorous women, and relishes snapshots of activity along the route, from shoeing a horse to winnowing rice. Hannah H繹ch
Hannah H繹ch (1889-1978) moved between differing worlds: as an editorial assistant with a major Berlin-based magazine publisher, and as the only woman who could hold her own in the German capital's vibrant Dada scene of the 1920s. Her works dissected a world marked by the catastrophe of the Great War and an intense consumer culture, and reassembled it in revolutionary, poetic, and often ironic ways. Scissors and glue were the weapons of her art of montage, of which she was a coinventor. Cutting and montage also shaped film, still a new medium in the 1920s, which strongly influenced H繹ch's art: she understood her assembled pictures as static films. This richly illustrated and expertly annotated book explores comprehensively for the first time H繹ch's life-long fascination with film and the visual culture of the modern industrial age. Covering her entire career, It demonstrates how montage evolved in a field of tension between artistic experimentation, commercial exploitation, and political appropriation. A text on photomontage by H繹ch, written in 1948, and a text-collage on the history of montage, in which major protagonists of Modernism and Avant-garde have their say, round out this volume.
Sargent Claude Johnson
A rich reappraisal of a key Black American modernist through a lens of cross-cultural engagement Sargent Claude Johnson (1888-1967) was the first Black modernist on the West Coast to gain national acclaim. His artistic practice, forged in California, drew from a range of international influences, including traditional and contemporary arts of Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, particularly Mexican modernism and Indigenous pottery techniques. Spanning the Black Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, Johnson's career was devoted to sensitive, ennobling portrayals of people of color. A Flight of Dreams
Eugene V. Smith as a youth became infatuated with flying. His art began in grade school, but his passion was always to become a pilot. As he grew his dreams grew also. During the Korean War "Gene" the name he was known as enrolled in pilot training and was denied due to his vision. From here his flying returned to his other passions, music, and art. This volume is a compilation of his dreams. Later in life Gene exhibited his art selling paintings at annual art guild exhibits and concluding with an art exhibit in Paris. A final dream of Gene's was to publish a comic book which was sent in to one publisher and denied. Sadly, Gene did not fulfill his dreams of flying or seeing his comic book come to life. We; his widow, children, and the art world lost Gene in 2009. Today we offer this book of his dreams taking flight through his art. One final note: the one man exhibit in Paris: that was located in Paris, Illinois at the art gallery and museum known today as The Link Art Gallery!

NFT related art and the concept of the artist in a historical perspective
Bachelor Thesis from the year 2023 in the subject Art - History of Art, grade: 1,7, LMU Munich (Kunstgeschichte), language: English, abstract: Since 2021, NFTs (non-fungible token) have conquered the public and the (art)world with headlines found its way into international headlines. The sale of Everydays: The First 5000 Days has made Beeple the third most valuable living artist, behind Jeff Koons and David Hockney, displacing Gerhard Richter from the Top 3. Kolja Reichert, art critic and curator, critically questions in one of his articles the most expensive illustrator and thereby points to a significant problem. The crypto market, originally part of online trading, had until then mainly dealt with sports trading cards, fan merchandise and products from the gaming industry. With the entry of NFTs into the traditional auction system, the collective name "NFT art" has formed, without quality standards, entry barriers, or criticism. Based on this problem, this Bachelor thesis deals with the overarching question of what makes an NFT creator an artist and how does this concept of an artist relate to historical concepts of artists. To answer these questions, case studies of two NFTs will be conducted. While their producers have very different artistic backgrounds, both NFTs were auctioned at renowned auction houses in 2021. Starting from the overarching question, these two examples will be used to examine whether the work can be related to historical concepts of artists, to what extent NFT technology has created a new concept of the artist, and if there are features outside of NFT technology that connect these two artworks.

An Ordinary Man's Extraordinary Journey
From a doting dad to determined humanitarian, Mark Collins has leveraged his challenges into philanthropic success. Founder of YOUschool, a learning organisation with the purpose of helping young people choose their best path in life, it is Mark's lived experiences that help him give children the best opportunities to enjoy happy, loving, and joyful lives through to adulthood. It is from his son, Max, that Mark draws inspiration. After being diagnosed with epilepsy at age five, Max has spent the last seven years in and out of hospitals - his dad by his side every step of the way. Mark has spent this time learning everything he can about his son's condition, raising money, and promoting awareness for epilepsy. It was his son's illness that spurred Mark to focus on his own health and wellbeing, recognising the direct effect and influence that the energy of others had on his son's symptoms. Mark began regularly practising meditation, yoga and eating natural foods with Max as a way of assisting him in his treatment. Max's seizure count went from sometimes over 50 per day to consistently zero with an energetic approach rather than a physical one. From neuro linguistic techniques and hypnosis to toxin removal and cranio-sacral adjustments, Mark and Max found their own way forward after being told that this was just how Max is, there is nothing other than the medication he takes. This book was written as the events in them played out over a two-year period. It is a blend of parenting advice, health and wellness techniques and a real life story of unconditional love and dedication between a father and son.

The Lost Generation La Generaci籀n Perdida
An examination of the balance between modernity and tradition in Cuba's turn-of-the-century artistic evolution. The Lost Generation La generaci籀n perdida accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College. The modern artistic ceramic movement in Cuba, almost exclusively comprised of women artists (including Amelia Pel獺ez, Mirta Garc穩a Buch, and Mar穩a Elena Jubr穩as), emerged toward the end of the 1940s and continued into the next decade. The ceramicists invited Cuba's modernist protagonists, including Ren矇 Portocarrero, Luis Mart穩nez Pedro, and Wifredo Lam, to participate in designing ceramics at the Taller de Santiago de Las Vegas. The workshop thus became a locus for the fermentation of Cuban modernist expression. Juan Miguel Rodr穩guez de la Cruz, the workshop's proprietor, recognized the artistic value of the ceramicists' production and he, along with the women he hired, encouraged collaboration with their male contemporaries. A symbiotic artistic practice grew in which the ceramicists introduced ideas and designs to the painters, whose fledgling attempts in ceramics took eventual flight. As the painters' familiarity with the new medium grew, similar forms appeared in their two-dimensional renderings, which are now synonymous with Cuban modernism. During the post-Revolutionary period of 1959-85, the Taller became part of Cuba's National Patrimony, continuing the tradition of producing serial and artistic pieces. As the Revolutionary regime wore on, the Taller's importance waned, artists left Cuba, and independent workshops flourished. While the Taller de Santiago no longer boasts importance in artistic production today, it left an indelible mark on Cuban modernism. With essays by Cuban, American, and Cuban-American scholars, The Lost Generation La generaci籀n perdida provides a background on the twentieth-century avant-garde movements in Cuba; delves into the narrative of an overlooked group of Cuban women ceramicists, assessing the implications of their work on modernism; and, finally, explores in depth the women artists of the third avant-garde generation (1949-58).
