Aby Warburg

Ingram 出版
2024/07/05 出版

The aim of this book is to investigate the possible contributions of the art historian Aby Warburg to contemporary art historiography. Currently, Warburg's thought has been revisited by scholars from various fields, although the bibliography on the subject is still scarce in Brazil. Georges Didi-Huberman has been one of the main disseminators of Warburg in Brazil and abroad, which is why in this research he has become the main theoretical source. We started by investigating the fundamental Warburgian concepts of the survival of images and the formulas of the pathos. In a related way, these concepts shape a new approach to art history, focussing on images obscured by hegemonic history. This work is made up of studies on the writings of Aby Warburg, the tracing of relationships between Warburg and other thinkers such as Jacob Burckhardt and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as his approach to the field of anthropology. Finally, an experimental exercise in the application of Aby Warburg's historiographical method is constructed using some images from the work of the Brazilian artist Farnese de Andrade.

Fenollosa’s Legacy in Late Nineteenth-Century Japan

Hiroshi,Nara  著
Ingram 出版
2024/07/03 出版

Fenollosa's Legacy in Late Nineteenth Century Japan: An American Scholar's Role in Resurrecting the Art of Japan makes a critical assessment of American art theorist Ernest F. Fenollosa's work in Meiji Japan. Ernest F. Fenollosa was first hired as a Tokyo University professor of political philosophy in 1878 but became an art theorist and policymaker for Japan's Education Ministry. His illustrious career as an art administrator began with the 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that cemented the reputation of his work. Working closely with Okakura Kakuzō (Tenshin), Fenollosa became the lightning rod in defining the course of modern painting as well as in establishing the first national art school. He is widely credited with resurrecting moribund traditional Japanese painting to health. The author shows this assessment of Fenollosa as the savior of Japanese traditional painting work may not have been deserved by examining the historical context in which he made the 1882 speech. The book offers the first English translation of Fenollosa's 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that had been previously unavailable to the non-Japanese reading audience.

Male Idols and Branding in Chinese Luxury

Bloomsbury 出版
2024/07/02 出版

Challenging the Western view of idols as objects of worship, this book explores the role that male idols play in fashion and cosmetics brand marketing in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau; including the role of the female gaze. It examines idols in the more modern, pan-Asian sense of the word - as objects of social devotion, worshipped by the adoring masses and, in China and Korea, as objects of social and moral uplift. The contemporary idol wields great power - the power to influence taste, and to sell - and Male Idols and Branding in Chinese Luxury focuses on their ability to arouse the consumer appetite to buy. In China, popular culture idols play a vital role in the luxury fashion and cosmetics industries as brand ambassadors and this volume fills a critical gap in the English-language literature on this key element of the marketing industry, bringing together authors from the United States and China, and featuring case studies on idols Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan. Through considering the subtleties of branding and marketing in China, Korea, and Japan, and the relationship of Chinese idols to fans and consumers in other Asian countries, the authors delve into brand-idol collaborations, particularly through lenses of brand image and toxic fan culture.

Montmartre

2024/07/01 出版

An entirely fresh study of how, at the end of the nineteenth century, the neighborhood of Montmartre nurtured a vital, innovative and unique community of artists who revolutionized Western art. After the 1871 Paris Commune, Montmartre played a significant artistic role; its unique geographical, political and social situation attracted independent artists, writers and musicians and allowed them fully to develop their bohemian and revolutionary spirit. Its cabarets, caf矇s, circus, dancehalls and theatres made Montmartre a popular cultural centre. Drawing on important artworks from the Weisman & Michel Collection and the Mus矇e de Montmartre, Paris, as well as a wealth of archival photography, maps and prints to illustrate its narrative text, this volume presents up to 180 stunning colour illustrations. It includes works by Auguste Renoir, Pablo Picasso, Suzanne Valadon, Henri Matisse and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and sheds light on central figures that were forgotten by history such as Louis Anquetin and Henri-Gabriel Ibels.A timeline of key moments and events in Montmartre from 1870-1910, a map of Montmartre showing the locations of studio spaces, residences and cabarets, and a selected bibliography provide important sources of new information for scholars. This book is an invitation to readers to enter that world and begin to explore the intensity and enduring expression of the creative energies of its personalities, who contributed so significantly to the beginnings of modern art.

Calligraphy Meets Philosophy - Talk 3

2024/07/01 出版

Calligraphy Meets Philosophy - Talk 3Introduction(I)The Calligraphy Meets Philosophy series aims to foster a correct and deeper understanding of traditional Chinese calligraphy and philosophy. It does so by having calligraphies of selected classical texts accompanied by line-by-line translations and annotated remarks.(II)Talk 3 focuses on outlining some important traditional Chinese concepts like "Filial Piety (孝)", "Wisdom (智)", "Tacit Deeds of Grace (陰德)", and "Cultivating One's Foundations (務本)", etc... Selected texts include those by Bai Juyi (白居易, 772-846 AD), Liu Yuxi (劉禹錫, 772-842 AD), Li Qingzhao (李清照, 1084-1151 AD), Sima Guang (司馬光, 1019-1086 AD), Sun Guoting (孫過庭, 648-703 AD), and Sun Yat-Sen (孫逸仙, 1866-1925); as well, phrases from the canonical Analects (《論語》), Book of Rites (《禮記》), and Platform Sutra (《六祖壇經》) are also included. The book concludes with KS Vincent Poon's modelling and remarks on the Chinese calligraphy masterpiece Yi Ying Stele (《乙瑛碑》).(III)Here, I would like to thank my father, Dr Kwok Kin POON (潘國鍵博士), for his enduring assistance. His invaluable insight on correctly interpreting various old texts has contributed significantly to my translations. Further, his continuing encouragement has always been the source of my passion. Perhaps this is a prime example of "passing on (傳承) the family's profession and reputation (家業)", a custom that the Japanese hold so dearly. And that is exactly why Japan can still retain its traditional culture and values.KS Vincent PoonAugust 2024, Toronto

Wagner's concept of Kunstreligion through the prism of the mystery beginning

Ingram 出版
2024/06/25 出版

The book analyzes the mystery foundations of R. Wagner's work. The opus, which concludes the composer's creative path, was an opera-mystery. All the previous musical and stage works, beginning with The Flying Dutchman, were approaches to the creation of a summarizing opus. The mystery foundations of R. Wagner's work are conceptualized by the author of the monograph through the prism of the great composer's transversal world outlook. In R. Wagner's work, the idea of Kunstreligion reflects the composer's religious and philosophical picture of the world, which was the result of his heuristic quest. R. Wagner's interaction with cultural and historical heritage reflects his interest in the knowledge that was accumulated in various areas of social consciousness. The book is addressed to musicologists, culturologists, as well as to a wide range of readers with a heuristic interest in these areas of humanitarian knowledge.

White lies, Black blood

Ken,Blanch  著

The tragic case of Australian Indigenous man Kipper Billy, a convicted rapist condemned to hang in 1862 before a watertight alibi was established for him and his co-accused, Billy Horton. While Horton was pardoned before the execution could be carried out, no such acknowledgment of innocence was extended to Kipper Billy, who had been killed during an attempted jailbreak. Dogged crime reporter Ken Blanch wrote the first edition of this book White Lies, Black Blood: The Awful Killing of Kipper Billy in 2015, which resulted in an historic posthumous Queen's pardon for Kipper Billy by the Governor of Queensland in 2018, possibly the world's first pardon of an Indigenous man who died while a prisoner in custody. This is the story of that pardon and what happened next.

Inventing the Modern: Untold Stories of the Women Who Shaped the Museum of Modern Art

Museum of 出版
2024/06/22 出版

Profiles of fourteen women who transformed the country's foremost modern art museum in its fledgling yearsFounded in 1929, the Museum of Modern Art owes much of its early success to a number of remarkable women who shaped the future of the institution in its first decades. As founders, patrons, curators and directors of various departments, these figures boldly defied societal norms to launch this radical venture during the depths of the Great Depression. They were fortunate in the freedoms afforded by uncharted territory; because the notion of a museum of modern art was new, there was a conspicuous absence of the professional prerequisites, official structures and respectable salaries that would have limited the jobs to men. This left the door open for a host of women to define their own roles and invent new fields. This book profiles 14 pioneering figures who made an indelible mark not only on MoMA, but on the culture of their time. Inventing the Modern transports the reader to the grit and glamour of midtown Manhattan in the 1930s and '40s. It deepens our understanding of MoMA's history and contributes to a broader understanding of women's achievement in the 20th century.Subjects include: Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan, Margaret Scolari Barr, Ernestine Fantl, Iris Barry, Elodie Courter, Sarah Newmeyer, Dorothy Miller, Dorothy Dudley, Nancy Newhall, Elizabeth Mock, Olga Guggenheim, Jean Volkmer.

These and the Bible verses have been translated to English. The book was originally published in 1533. The introductory text in the front matter was written by English poet Austin Dobson (1840 - 1921). The verses and images are stark reminders of mortality regardless of one's station in life.

Russian Cosmism

Boris,Groys  著
Mit Press 出版
2024/06/20 出版

Crucial texts, many available in English for the first time, written before and during the Bolshevik Revolution by the radical biopolitical utopianists of Russian Cosmism. Cosmism emerged in Russia before the October Revolution and developed through the 1920s and 1930s; like Marxism and the European avant-garde, two other movements that shared this intellectual moment, Russian Cosmism rejected the contemplative for the transformative, aiming to create not merely new art or philosophy but a new world. Cosmism went the furthest in its visions of transformation, calling for the end of death, the resuscitation of the dead, and free movement in cosmic space. This volume collects crucial texts, many available in English for the first time, by the radical biopolitical utopianists of Russian Cosmism. Cosmism was developed by the Russian philosopher Nikolai Fedorov in the late nineteenth century; he believed that humans had an ethical obligation not only to care for the sick but to cure death using science and technology; outer space was the territory of both immortal life and infinite resources. After the revolution, a new generation pursued Fedorov's vision. Cosmist ideas inspired visual artists, poets, filmmakers, theater directors, novelists (Tolstoy and Dostoevsky read Fedorov's writings), architects, and composers, and influenced Soviet politics and technology. In the 1930s, Stalin quashed Cosmism, jailing or executing many members of the movement. Today, when the philosophical imagination has again become entangled with scientific and technological imagination, the works of the Russian Cosmists seem newly relevant. Indigenous War Painting of the Plains

Ingram 出版
2024/06/15 出版

In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains practiced an archival art--narrating war exploits in large-scale paintings executed on animal hide robes, shirts, tipi covers, and tipi liners. Essentially autobiographical, the paintings were worn and lived in by the men whose war exploits they portrayed, and were made to be "read" by the public at large. Executed in a pictorial narrative style and documenting actual events, these paintings blend visual art and history. Indigenous War Painting of the Plains is the first comprehensive look at this important North American art form, covering the full corpus of war paintings from fourteen tribes across the plains. Two impediments have previously made such a book impractical: photography alone falls short of rendering war paintings for the printed page, and only about half of the surviving works have reliable documentation on their cultural origins. Arni Brownstone surmounts these difficulties by producing precise electronic redrawings and by using well-documented paintings to inform poorly documented examples, bolstered by a careful examination of collection histories. Featuring some 300 photographs and electronic redrawings, the book focuses on 83 paintings organized into four chapters covering the paintings of tribes associated with a specific geographical sphere of artistic influence. Four appendixes feature paintings combined with "translations" by Indigenous collaborators who had intimate knowledge of the depicted events. Offering vivid access to the key works of war painting preserved in 37 museums throughout North America and Europe, Indigenous War Painting of the Plains illuminates distinctions between painting styles of different tribes, reveals how they influenced one another and changed over time, and conveys a deep understanding of how war painting developed in relation to profound social changes in Plains Indian cultures.

The Politics of Collecting

Eunsong,Kim  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/14 出版

In The Politics of Collecting, Eunsong Kim traces how racial capitalism and colonialism situated the rise of US museum collections and conceptual art forms. Investigating historical legal and property claims, she argues that regimes of expropriation--rather than merit or good taste--are responsible for popular ideas of formal innovation and artistic genius. In doing so, she details how Marcel Duchamp's canonization has more to do with his patron's donations to museums than it does the quality of Duchamp's work, and she uncovers the racialized and financialized logic behind the Archive of New Poetry's collecting practices. Ranging from the conception of philanthropy devised by the robber barons of the late nineteenth century to ongoing digitization projects, Kim provides a new history of contemporary art that accounts for the complicated entanglement of race, capital, and labor behind storied art institutions and artists. Drawing on history, theory, and economics, Kim challenges received notions of artistic success and talent and calls for a new vision of art beyond the cultural institution.

Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) is renowned as one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century. Almost his entire artistic life was dedicated to creating image records of kabuki theatre productions and the actors who starred in them, including such notables as Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Onoe Kikugoro V. Kunichika constantly developed his own unique aesthetic style, always pushing the boundaries of ukiyo-e in bold and provocative new directions.DOYENS OF DELIRIUM collects 100 of Kunichika's most striking and vivid kabuki actor portrait designs, in a testament to the enduring innovation and power of his prolific output. The selection presented here draws from two decades of the artist's work, and features a wide range of seminal kabuki subjects produced between 1864 and 1883 (after which his artistic focus turned more to the triptych format). Prints from the following series are included: Haiyu shiranami atari goketsu (1864); Satomi hakkenshi no uchi (1865-66); Chochidori juban-kiri (1868); Tokyo hana Kunichika manga (1872); Tokyo ichini date kurabe (1874); Kijutsu junishi no uchi (1877); Chimei junikagetsu no uchi (with Kawanabe Kyosai, 1882); Mitate hakkenden no uchi (1883); and Gishi meimei-den (1883, Kunichika's tribute to the 47 Ronin). The prints are reproduced in full color and full page-size throughout.

Radical Clay

Joe,Earle  著
2024/06/12 出版

A diverse selection of contemporary ceramic work by Japanese women, featuring stunning pieces from virtuosic artists Since World War II, women artists from Japan have made influential contributions to ceramics that have been inadequately acknowledged. This catalogue focuses on thirty-six ceramists who have produced original and technically innovative pieces over the past fifty years while working outside the male-dominated, traditional Japanese studio practice and its countermovements. Both established and emerging artists with diverse styles are presented together to showcase their collective achievements and impact. After embarking on their careers decades ago, Mishima Kimiyo (b. 1932), Tsuboi Asuka (b. 1932), and Ogawa Machiko (b. 1946) continue to produce groundbreaking sculpture that pushes the limits of the clay as a medium. Among the younger artists featured are Konno Tomoko (b. 1965) and Aoki Katsuyo (b. 1972), whose works explore themes ranging from bodily distortion to fantastical decoration. Many of these creators have resisted gendered expectations, whether by approaching traditionally "feminine" subjects like flowers in unconventional ways or by working in so-called masculine modes, including on large scales. All of the selected pieces are from the exemplary private collection of Carol and Jeffrey Horvitz, who have advocated strongly to bring these artists to global attention. Distributed for the Art Institute of Chicago Exhibition Schedule: Art Institute of Chicago (December 16, 2023-June 3, 2024) John & Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, Florida (July 27, 2024-May 11, 2025) Ackland Art Museum, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (June 13-August 31, 2025) Phoenix Museum of Art (September 24, 2025-August 9, 2026) Dallas Museum of Art (dates TBD)

Victorian Love Letters in Literature and Art

J B,Bullen  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/05 出版

This book is a fascinating study of the love letter in a rich historical context, in which painting played an essential part - not merely illustrating epistolary dynamics, but creating them. Roberta Zanasi's very engaging approach creates a fresh and significant subject in literary and art criticism. A great read. (Clare Brant, King's College London) In Victorian times, when postal reforms and technological progress revolutionized communication, letter writing became more widespread than ever. Love letters, in particular, continued to be central in the courtship ritual. However, as new ideas about love and marriage came along, they no longer exclusively represented the quintessential romantic form in the popular imagination. Through a close analysis of a broad corpus of Victorian correspondences, novels and paintings, this book demonstrates that novelists and painters who dealt with the ever-recurring themes of love and marriage could not refrain from incorporating an epistolary element into their works. Letters still inspired artists of all kinds, and advances in communications, rather than displacing them, made people more aware of the essence and potentiality of this medium.

Japanese Mingei Folk Crafts

"In an age when so much of our time is spent staring at screens, it is easy to understand why the warmth, intimacy and idiosyncrasies of hand craftsmanship should seem alluring...the term Mingei describes useful, unobtrusive, beautifully crafted objects." --Alice Rawsthorn, The New York Times The Mingei Folk Crafts movement, founded by philosopher and art historian Soetsu Yanagi and potters Hamada Shoji and Kawai Kanjiro in the early 20th century, celebrates the utilitarian designs in functional objects hand-crafted by village artisans throughout Japan. This book offers an illustrated guide to Japan's rich folk craft traditions and shows why the Mingei philosophy is even more relevant today than it was a century ago. Memory in Fragments

University 出版
2024/06/02 出版

An exploration of how the ancient Maya engaged with their history by using, altering, and burying stone sculptures. For the ancient Maya, monumental stone sculptures were infused with agency. As they were used, reused, altered, and buried, such sculptures retained ceremonial meaning. In Memory in Fragments, Megan E. O'Neil explores how ancient Maya people engaged with history through these sculptures, as well as how they interacted with the stones themselves over the course of the sculptures' long "lives." Considering Maya religious practices, historiography, and conceptions of materials and things, O'Neil explores how Maya viewers perceived sculptures that were fragmented, scarred, burned, damaged by enemies, or set in unusual locations. In each case, she demonstrates how different human interactions, amid dynamic religious, political, and historical contexts, led to new episodes in the sculptures' lives. A rare example of cross-temporal and geographical work in this field, Memory in Fragments both compares sculptures within ancient Maya culture across Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize over hundreds of years and reveals how memory may accrue around and be evoked in material remains.

Many-Valued Aesthetics

Hauke,Ohls  著
Ingram 出版
2024/05/30 出版

罈Yes, No, Perhaps竄 are the most written words in Mary Bauermeister's artworks. Together they stand for the concept of many-valued aesthetics in the German artist's oeuvre - an aesthetic that Bauermeister developed using many-valued logic. Hauke Ohls brings the artist's central groups of works in context with each other as well as with the neo-avant-garde of the post-war period in Europe and the USA. He shows that the development of Bauermeister's art may appear disparate, but her canvas and relief works, drawings and writing pictures, lens boxes and stone pictures are characterized by a reciprocal relationship of combinations and interconnections. Through the ubiquitous use of meta-references, the entire oeuvre ultimately appears as an interconnected assemblage.

Where is Art?

Routledge 出版
2024/05/29 出版

Featuring chapters by a diverse range of leading international artists and theorists, this book suggests that contemporary art is increasingly characterized by the problem of where and when it is situated. While much advanced artistic speculation of the twentieth-century was aligned with the question "what is art?," a key question for many artists and thinkers in the twenty-first century has become "where is art?" Contributors explore the challenge of meaningfully identifying and evaluating works located across multiple versions and locations in space and time. In doing so, they also seek to find appropriate language and criteria for evaluating forms of art that often straddle other realms of knowledge and activity. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, contemporary art, art criticism, and philosophy of art.

This volume uses the art of Rome to help us understand the radical historical break between the fundamental ancient pre-supposition that there is a natural world or cosmos situating human life, and the equally fundamental modern emphasis on human imagination and its creative power.

Yokai (Weird Spectres, Demons & Beasts)

Ingram 出版
2024/05/28 出版

UKIYO-E: "Pictures of the floating world." The floating world - a transient realm of pleasures, horrors, and dreams. Ukiyo-e, depictions of this shadowy projection of the human mind, formed the mainstay of Japanese paintings and woodblock prints produced between the 17th and 20th centuries.YOKAI: "Ghost; apparition; phantom; spectre; demon; monster; goblin." Taking this definition to include mystic visions and mythic or monstrous beasts, this book collects more than one hundred 19th century Japanese woodblock prints whose subject matter covers the entire spectrum of the supernatural and the outlandish. The selection of works is also limited to the triptych format, which gave ukiyo-e artists the freedom to express their phantasies as narratives in a kinetic, detailed image frame. The work of over twenty different artists is featured, spread over five different categories - kaiju ("strange beasts"), yurei ("ghosts"), oni ("demons"), juryoku ("mystic forces"), and yojutsu ("black magic"). The book also has a special section for yakusha-e, prints directly depicting supernatural scenes from the kabuki theatre. The artists featured include Yoshitoshi, Kuniyoshi, Kunichika and many others.New revised edition.

Greek and Roman Painting and the Digital Humanities

Routledge 出版
2024/05/27 出版

This volume is a groundbreaking discussion of the role of digital media in research on ancient painting, and a deep reflection on the effectiveness of digital media in opening the field to new audiences. The study of classical art always oscillates between archaeology and classics, between the study of ancient texts and archaeological material. For this reason, it is often difficult to collect all the data, to have access to both types of information on an equal basis. The increasing development of digital collections and databases dedicated to both archaeological material and ancient texts is a direct response to this problem. The book's central theme is the role of the digital humanities, especially digital collection, s such as the Digital Milliet, in the study of ancient Greek and Roman painting. Part 1 focuses on the transition between the original print version of the Recueil Milliet and its digital incarnation. Part 2 addresses the application of digital tools to the analysis of ancient art. Part 3 focuses on ancient wall painting. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, classics, archaeology, and digital humanities.

The postcolonial canon and steps towards decolonization

Ingram 出版
2024/05/26 出版

Essay from the year 2022 in the subject Art - History of Art, grade: 1,0, University of Cologne (Institut f羹r Kunst und Kunsttheorie), course: Kulturelle Praktiken jenseits globaler Vernetzung, language: English, abstract: This paper takes a postcolonial perspective on the existing canon of art history and examines to what extent the low representation of non-European and non-North American arts is a continuity of European colonial times and which steps could contribute to decolonizing the canon. Postcolonial research asks how colonial rule and domination have manifested themselves in science, politics, economics, literature, art, law, popular culture, and everyday contexts and continue to have an impact into our present. There's no dispute that the prefix "post" does not refer to a final status, but to continuity. The topic is gaining ever more increased relevance resulting from current globalization processes and the accompanying internationalization of art, which pose new challenges to art history, art criticism and exhibitions. Thus, in recent years, the European art system has begun to self-reflect on its own art historical canonization in distinction to possible other art histories and to modify its criteria of exclusion and inclusion for canonization in such a way that a - still limited but - constantly growing number of artists from the formerly colonized territories are now represented. Nevertheless, in Germany, colonial history seems to be only hesitantly recognized as part of general education, and also the art historical discourse in Germany shows comparatively little interest in the international and interdisciplinary debates on postcolonialism. Due to the fact that German art history still remains largely silent on postcolonial questions, and that the German government did not recognize the colonial crimes in present-day Namibia as genocide until 2021, voices of activists of color are growing louder; and it shows the need for further debate.

Born in 1947? What else happened?

Ron,Williams  著
Ingram 出版
2024/05/20 出版

ABOUT THESE SERIES ....But after that, I realised that I knew very little about these parents of mine. They had been born about the start of the Twentieth Century, and they died in 1970 and 1980. For their last 50 years, I was old enough to speak with a bit of sense.I could have talked to them a lot about their lives. I could have found out about the times they lived in. But I did not. I know almost nothing about them really. Their courtship? Working in the pits? The Lock-out in the Depression? Losing their second child? Being dusted as a miner? The shootings at Rothbury? My uncles killed in the War? Love on the dole? There were hundreds, thousands of questions that I would now like to ask them. But, alas, I can't. It's too late. Thus, prompted by my guilt, I resolved to write these books. They describe happenings that affected people, real people. The whole series is, to coin a modern phrase, designed to push your buttons, to make you remember and wonder at things forgotten. The books might just let nostalgia see the light of day, so that oldies and youngies will talk about the past and re-discover a heritage otherwise forgotten. Hopefully, they will spark discussions between generations, and foster the asking and answering of questions that should not remain unanswered. In 1947, Labour was still in power but, for some silly reason, was not giving motorists the petrol that the rest of the world was getting. The Poms were firing rockets over our Aborigines, while Menzies was discovering Reds under our Beds. Our new Governor General was not a Pom, but a local lad, and Princess Elizabeth said yes to a Greek. Six boys, aged under 17, were gaoled for life for rape, and 10 o'clock closing might stop the six o'clock swill. Indonesia, India and Israel wanted colonial powers to go, and cricket was again thriving on hatred of the Poms. These were striking times. Ron Williams is a retired teacher, mathematician, computer-man, political scientist, farmer and writer. He has a B.A. from Sydney, and a Masters in Social Work and a PhD in Political Science from Hawaii.

Paris 1874

Sylvie,Patry  著
Ingram 出版
2024/05/17 出版

A wide-ranging exploration of the birth of impressionism centered around the landmark exhibition in Paris in 1874 "The catalogue, in unusual tall format, is particularly attractive and vivacious, full of fresh material and images, expanding the Impressionist cast of characters, exploring Paris as their tumultuous inspiration."--Jackie Wullschl瓣ger, Financial Times, "Best Books of 2024: Art, Design and Fashion" Discover the origins of impressionism in this revelatory look at the context for the radical 1874 exhibition that is considered the birth of the French art movement. Featuring works by not only C矇zanne, Degas, Monet, Morisot, Pissarro, Renoir, and Sisley, but also many other lesser-known participants and those who exhibited at the official Salon that year, this book explores how artists of the time responded to the shifting social and political currents during this singular moment in history, as well as the norms that these artists rebelled against in their new approach to art. This is a milestone reunion of many of the show's artworks, which include paintings, works on paper, prints, and sculptures, that made the exhibition held by the soci矇t矇 anonyme 150 years ago an event of international and lasting significance. Paris 1874 draws on new scholarship to offer a multidisciplinary approach to impressionism. It explores the important role played by the contemporary press and also contextualizes the movement in relation to the devastation of the Franco-Prussian War and the Commune, as well as the subsequent process of reconstruction. Above all, it challenges established narratives surrounding the origins of impressionism itself by reexamining its position within the larger artistic landscape, particularly in relation to the Salon--which exhibited works strikingly similar to those included in soci矇t矇 anonyme's exhibition. With an engaging design that uses motifs from archival materials to suggest the look of Parisian publications of the 1870s, this book is a handsome and compelling addition to our understanding of the dawn of impressionism and why it is considered a pivotal moment in the history of Western art. Distributed for the National Gallery of Art, Washington Exhibition Schedule: Mus矇e d'Orsay, Paris (March 25-July 14, 2024) National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (September 8, 2024-January 19, 2025)

Moving with the Magdalen

Moving with the Magdalen is the first art-historical book dedicated to the cult of Mary Magdalen in the late medieval Alps. Its seven case study chapters focus on the artworks commissioned for key churches that belonged to both parish and pilgrimage networks in order to explore the role of artistic workshops, commissioning patrons and diverse devotees in the development and transfer of the saint's iconography across the mountain range. Together they underscore how the Magdalen's cult and contingent imagery interacted with the environmental conditions and landscape of the Alps along late medieval routes.

The Hungarian Avant-Garde and Socialism

Bloomsbury 出版
2024/05/15 出版

The emergence and the activities of a second public sphere in the areas of Soviet influence were intricately linked to the performative and intermedial production and usage of alternative spaces. Applying a multitude of perspectives and networked topography, The Hungarian Avant-Garde and Socialism investigates artistic strategies of spaces - namely those of the artist's studio, exhibitions, installations, clubs, apartments, cellars, event halls, and chapels - all of which existed parallel to or were interwoven with the regulated public sphere in Hungary from the beginning of the 1960s to the era immediately following the K獺d獺r regime. This book captures and discusses the exclusionary and inclusionary mechanisms inscribed into public spheres behind the Iron Curtain in all their paradoxes through the looking glass of an artist generation that was controversially labelled "neo-", and later, "post-avant-garde". Cross-referencing the international tendencies in the marginal art worlds that existed between and beyond the Cold War reality of Blocs, The Hungarian Avant-Garde demonstrates how mostly non-conformist artists in Hungary, and by extension the spaces they created, reacted to the conflicting, contradictory nature of public spheres in the post-totalitarian condition.

Finding Dandini

Ingram 出版
2024/05/14 出版

A university professor of fine art and art history walks into an empty church in New York, seeking peace and clarity, and makes an unexpected observation-an Italian Baroque masterpiece unassumingly hanging on the wall. His ensuing scholarship leads to the rediscovery of Cesare Dandini's previously missing "Holy Family with the Infant Saint John." Dandini rose to prominence in the early 1630s, amid one of the darkest periods in the history of Florence. Despite the plague and Rome's oppressive power, the troubled artist overcame his own personal struggles to become one of the city's finest painters. Cesare Dandini is brought back to life in this volume as a result of significant new research, including previously unidentified self-portraits.
