Aby Warburg
The aim of this book is to investigate the possible contributions of the art historian Aby Warburg to contemporary art historiography. Currently, Warburg's thought has been revisited by scholars from various fields, although the bibliography on the subject is still scarce in Brazil. Georges Didi-Huberman has been one of the main disseminators of Warburg in Brazil and abroad, which is why in this research he has become the main theoretical source. We started by investigating the fundamental Warburgian concepts of the survival of images and the formulas of the pathos. In a related way, these concepts shape a new approach to art history, focussing on images obscured by hegemonic history. This work is made up of studies on the writings of Aby Warburg, the tracing of relationships between Warburg and other thinkers such as Jacob Burckhardt and Friedrich Nietzsche, as well as his approach to the field of anthropology. Finally, an experimental exercise in the application of Aby Warburg's historiographical method is constructed using some images from the work of the Brazilian artist Farnese de Andrade.
Fenollosa’s Legacy in Late Nineteenth-Century Japan
Fenollosa's Legacy in Late Nineteenth Century Japan: An American Scholar's Role in Resurrecting the Art of Japan makes a critical assessment of American art theorist Ernest F. Fenollosa's work in Meiji Japan. Ernest F. Fenollosa was first hired as a Tokyo University professor of political philosophy in 1878 but became an art theorist and policymaker for Japan's Education Ministry. His illustrious career as an art administrator began with the 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that cemented the reputation of his work. Working closely with Okakura Kakuzō (Tenshin), Fenollosa became the lightning rod in defining the course of modern painting as well as in establishing the first national art school. He is widely credited with resurrecting moribund traditional Japanese painting to health. The author shows this assessment of Fenollosa as the savior of Japanese traditional painting work may not have been deserved by examining the historical context in which he made the 1882 speech. The book offers the first English translation of Fenollosa's 1882 Bijutsu shinsetsu speech that had been previously unavailable to the non-Japanese reading audience.

Viewing Osaka through the series 100 Views of Naniwa (Osaka) is an amazing experience. It is a well executed repetition over a format by Hiroshige. Some add a "Famous" to the title.This series is by three artists, Utagawa Yoshitaki, Utagawa Kunikazu and Nansuitei Yoshiyuki.Hiroshige I created his revolutionary series 100 Famous Views of Edo over three years, 1856-1859.This led to the publishing of copy series 100 Views of Naniwa (Osaka) by other artists. The book here is based mainly on prints in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and Osaka Municipal Museum collections.Hiroshige I had done his own series Famous Views of Naniwa (Osaka), 10 prints, as early as 1834, but it was his 100 Famous Views of Edo that caused the significant copy production.Copying ideas and prints was quite normal in the Edo Period Japan print business.

All the previous musical and stage works, beginning with The Flying Dutchman, were approaches to the creation of a summarizing opus. The mystery foundations of R. Wagner's work are conceptualized by the author of the monograph through the prism of the great composer's transversal world outlook. In R. Wagner's work, the idea of Kunstreligion reflects the composer's religious and philosophical picture of the world, which was the result of his heuristic quest. R. Wagner's interaction with cultural and historical heritage reflects his interest in the knowledge that was accumulated in various areas of social consciousness. The book is addressed to musicologists, culturologists, as well as to a wide range of readers with a heuristic interest in these areas of humanitarian knowledge.
White lies, Black blood
The tragic case of Australian Indigenous man Kipper Billy, a convicted rapist condemned to hang in 1862 before a watertight alibi was established for him and his co-accused, Billy Horton. While Horton was pardoned before the execution could be carried out, no such acknowledgment of innocence was extended to Kipper Billy, who had been killed during an attempted jailbreak. Dogged crime reporter Ken Blanch wrote the first edition of this book White Lies, Black Blood: The Awful Killing of Kipper Billy in 2015, which resulted in an historic posthumous Queen's pardon for Kipper Billy by the Governor of Queensland in 2018, possibly the world's first pardon of an Indigenous man who died while a prisoner in custody. This is the story of that pardon and what happened next.

Danse Macabre
The Dance of Death has appeared in many editions and forms over the centuries. This newly edited version includes 49 woodcuts based on paintings by Hans Holbein the Younger printed nearly four times the size in the original volume. The carver is believed to have been Hans L羹tzelburger or Hans of Luxemburg, made in the early 1500s. Many of the quatrains included in the book are attributed to Gilles Corrozet. These and the Bible verses have been translated to English. The book was originally published in 1533. The introductory text in the front matter was written by English poet Austin Dobson (1840 - 1921). The verses and images are stark reminders of mortality regardless of one's station in life.

Russian Cosmism
Crucial texts, many available in English for the first time, written before and during the Bolshevik Revolution by the radical biopolitical utopianists of Russian Cosmism. Cosmism emerged in Russia before the October Revolution and developed through the 1920s and 1930s; like Marxism and the European avant-garde, two other movements that shared this intellectual moment, Russian Cosmism rejected the contemplative for the transformative, aiming to create not merely new art or philosophy but a new world. Cosmism went the furthest in its visions of transformation, calling for the end of death, the resuscitation of the dead, and free movement in cosmic space. This volume collects crucial texts, many available in English for the first time, by the radical biopolitical utopianists of Russian Cosmism. Cosmism was developed by the Russian philosopher Nikolai Fedorov in the late nineteenth century; he believed that humans had an ethical obligation not only to care for the sick but to cure death using science and technology; outer space was the territory of both immortal life and infinite resources. After the revolution, a new generation pursued Fedorov's vision. Cosmist ideas inspired visual artists, poets, filmmakers, theater directors, novelists (Tolstoy and Dostoevsky read Fedorov's writings), architects, and composers, and influenced Soviet politics and technology. In the 1930s, Stalin quashed Cosmism, jailing or executing many members of the movement. Today, when the philosophical imagination has again become entangled with scientific and technological imagination, the works of the Russian Cosmists seem newly relevant. Indigenous War Painting of the Plains
In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the Indigenous peoples of the Great Plains practiced an archival art--narrating war exploits in large-scale paintings executed on animal hide robes, shirts, tipi covers, and tipi liners. Essentially autobiographical, the paintings were worn and lived in by the men whose war exploits they portrayed, and were made to be "read" by the public at large. Executed in a pictorial narrative style and documenting actual events, these paintings blend visual art and history. Indigenous War Painting of the Plains is the first comprehensive look at this important North American art form, covering the full corpus of war paintings from fourteen tribes across the plains. Two impediments have previously made such a book impractical: photography alone falls short of rendering war paintings for the printed page, and only about half of the surviving works have reliable documentation on their cultural origins. Arni Brownstone surmounts these difficulties by producing precise electronic redrawings and by using well-documented paintings to inform poorly documented examples, bolstered by a careful examination of collection histories. Featuring some 300 photographs and electronic redrawings, the book focuses on 83 paintings organized into four chapters covering the paintings of tribes associated with a specific geographical sphere of artistic influence. Four appendixes feature paintings combined with "translations" by Indigenous collaborators who had intimate knowledge of the depicted events. Offering vivid access to the key works of war painting preserved in 37 museums throughout North America and Europe, Indigenous War Painting of the Plains illuminates distinctions between painting styles of different tribes, reveals how they influenced one another and changed over time, and conveys a deep understanding of how war painting developed in relation to profound social changes in Plains Indian cultures.

DOYENS Of DELIRIUM
Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) is renowned as one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century. Almost his entire artistic life was dedicated to creating image records of kabuki theatre productions and the actors who starred in them, including such notables as Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Onoe Kikugoro V. Kunichika constantly developed his own unique aesthetic style, always pushing the boundaries of ukiyo-e in bold and provocative new directions.DOYENS OF DELIRIUM collects 100 of Kunichika's most striking and vivid kabuki actor portrait designs, in a testament to the enduring innovation and power of his prolific output. The selection presented here draws from two decades of the artist's work, and features a wide range of seminal kabuki subjects produced between 1864 and 1883 (after which his artistic focus turned more to the triptych format). Radical Clay
A diverse selection of contemporary ceramic work by Japanese women, featuring stunning pieces from virtuosic artists Since World War II, women artists from Japan have made influential contributions to ceramics that have been inadequately acknowledged. This catalogue focuses on thirty-six ceramists who have produced original and technically innovative pieces over the past fifty years while working outside the male-dominated, traditional Japanese studio practice and its countermovements. Both established and emerging artists with diverse styles are presented together to showcase their collective achievements and impact. After embarking on their careers decades ago, Mishima Kimiyo (b. 1932), Tsuboi Asuka (b. 1932), and Ogawa Machiko (b. 1946) continue to produce groundbreaking sculpture that pushes the limits of the clay as a medium. Among the younger artists featured are Konno Tomoko (b. 1965) and Aoki Katsuyo (b. 1972), whose works explore themes ranging from bodily distortion to fantastical decoration. Many of these creators have resisted gendered expectations, whether by approaching traditionally "feminine" subjects like flowers in unconventional ways or by working in so-called masculine modes, including on large scales. All of the selected pieces are from the exemplary private collection of Carol and Jeffrey Horvitz, who have advocated strongly to bring these artists to global attention. Memory in Fragments
An exploration of how the ancient Maya engaged with their history by using, altering, and burying stone sculptures. For the ancient Maya, monumental stone sculptures were infused with agency. As they were used, reused, altered, and buried, such sculptures retained ceremonial meaning. In Memory in Fragments, Megan E. O'Neil explores how ancient Maya people engaged with history through these sculptures, as well as how they interacted with the stones themselves over the course of the sculptures' long "lives." Considering Maya religious practices, historiography, and conceptions of materials and things, O'Neil explores how Maya viewers perceived sculptures that were fragmented, scarred, burned, damaged by enemies, or set in unusual locations. In each case, she demonstrates how different human interactions, amid dynamic religious, political, and historical contexts, led to new episodes in the sculptures' lives. Many-Valued Aesthetics

Together they stand for the concept of many-valued aesthetics in the German artist's oeuvre - an aesthetic that Bauermeister developed using many-valued logic. Hauke Ohls brings the artist's central groups of works in context with each other as well as with the neo-avant-garde of the post-war period in Europe and the USA. He shows that the development of Bauermeister's art may appear disparate, but her canvas and relief works, drawings and writing pictures, lens boxes and stone pictures are characterized by a reciprocal relationship of combinations and interconnections. Through the ubiquitous use of meta-references, the entire oeuvre ultimately appears as an interconnected assemblage.

Greek and Roman Painting and the Digital Humanities

The postcolonial canon and steps towards decolonization

Postcolonial research asks how colonial rule and domination have manifested themselves in science, politics, economics, literature, art, law, popular culture, and everyday contexts and continue to have an impact into our present. There's no dispute that the prefix "post" does not refer to a final status, but to continuity. The topic is gaining ever more increased relevance resulting from current globalization processes and the accompanying internationalization of art, which pose new challenges to art history, art criticism and exhibitions. Thus, in recent years, the European art system has begun to self-reflect on its own art historical canonization in distinction to possible other art histories and to modify its criteria of exclusion and inclusion for canonization in such a way that a - still limited but - constantly growing number of artists from the formerly colonized territories are now represented. Nevertheless, in Germany, colonial history seems to be only hesitantly recognized as part of general education, and also the art historical discourse in Germany shows comparatively little interest in the international and interdisciplinary debates on postcolonialism. Due to the fact that German art history still remains largely silent on postcolonial questions, and that the German government did not recognize the colonial crimes in present-day Namibia as genocide until 2021, voices of activists of color are growing louder; and it shows the need for further debate.

For their last 50 years, I was old enough to speak with a bit of sense.I could have talked to them a lot about their lives. I could have found out about the times they lived in. But I did not. Moving with the Magdalen is the first art-historical book dedicated to the cult of Mary Magdalen in the late medieval Alps. Its seven case study chapters focus on the artworks commissioned for key churches that belonged to both parish and pilgrimage networks in order to explore the role of artistic workshops, commissioning patrons and diverse devotees in the development and transfer of the saint's iconography across the mountain range.
