The transition from school to work is recognized by developmental psychologists as a significant phase in maturation of young people. In the 1990s the likelihood that the transition might be delayed by a period of prolonged unemployment was greater than any time since the 1930s. The psychological consequences of such a delay need to be understood because they may be damaging to both the individual and to society, particularly if they are long-lasting. Such an understanding is essential for the development of sound policy in relation to youth unemployment.Originally published in 1993, Growing up with Unemployment describes a major longitudinal study of a large group of South Australian school leavers through the 1980s. It assesses the scale and context of the problem and reviews the methods and theories that have been developed to study the psychological impact of unemployment. Psycho-oncology

In the mothers' speeches, impasses emerge in relation to the place that the child occupied in their fantasies, before and after the illness, the denial of their daughters' illness and the difficulty in mourning the idealised image of the child constructed by the maternal fantasy. The child seems to evoke for the mother her lost childhood and the child's body can be a means of expressing the family's malaise. When mothers learn of the diagnosis of a chronic and fatal illness, they sometimes seek refuge in denying their child's illness, building a buffer between their fantasy (idealised child) and reality (sick child). The idealised child must be mourned so that the mother doesn't become paralysed in her narcissistic wound and starts to help her daughter build her own narcissism, her body image and see more than just a sick child. It's necessary to locate the discourse of the sufferer, as well as the child's and mother's fantasies about becoming ill.

Suicide attempt
Suicide is a complex phenomenon, considered a public health problem due to the high rates of attempts and consequent deaths. The initial contact with a patient who has attempted suicide most often takes place in the emergency department of a general hospital, and it is essential to analyse the relationship between members of the healthcare team and the patient with suicidal behaviour in order to understand how care is being provided. The aim of this study was to understand how healthcare professionals working in the emergency department experience the care provided to patients who have attempted suicide. The research was qualitative in nature, data was collected through open-ended interviews and the material obtained from the collaborators' statements was organised into thematic units. This book is aimed at health professionals, students and readers with an interest in the subject.

Love, Sexual Attitudes and the Risk Index for Sex in the Elderly
The problem of ageing is an area of research of singular interest today, not only because of its importance, but also because of what still needs to be known and understood about the process. Regardless of the 'preconceptions' about the elderly and the ageing process, the experience and expression of sexuality for this age group is often put on the back burner, perhaps because many consider that at this stage of the life cycle the individual has already reduced their sexual interest. In addition to this, recent studies show that the elderly are the biggest risk group for AIDS - Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. Studies on this subject are still rare, especially those relating sexuality and trust between older people and prevention of sexually transmitted diseases. We will be using Stenberg's Triangular Theory of Love, since it can validate the impact of love on the affective-sexual relationship of the elderly more truthfully. Thus, the aim of this study will be to investigate the reasons why older people do not protect themselves sexually.
Adolescence and the relationship between parents and children in the 21st century
According to the theoretical assumptions of Social Constructionism and the Systemic Approach, this study aimed to understand adolescence and the relationship between parents and children in this period, from the point of view of the parents themselves and their children, as well as through the intersection of both views. In a world of uncertainty, constant change, oriented towards hedonism, where new dangers seem to be more accessible to young people, there is an urgent need to understand how adolescents and parents experience this period of adolescence in the 21st century, the challenges and difficulties they experience, as well as the strategies they say they use to deal with them. In this sense, adopting a qualitative methodology, and starting with focus groups and circular focus groups, this study sought to access and understand the visions, meanings and co-construction of the discourses of parents and children on this subject. The research project described here is an excellent study document for psychologists, sociologists and other professionals interested in the subject of adolescence. It is also a manuscript accessible to the general public wishing to learn about scientific research produced in Portugal.
