Concept Formation in the Wild
Concept formation is predominantly analyzed in classrooms and laboratory experiments, meaning the collective formation of culturally novel concepts in practical activities 'in the wild' has largely been neglected. However, understanding and influencing the complexity and contradictions of the present world demands powerful concepts that can make a difference in practice. Going beyond the understanding of concepts as individually acquired static labels, this book develops a dialectical theory of collective formation of novel concepts in the wild, in everyday activities. Drawing on cultural-historical activity theory (CHAT), concepts are seen as contested and future-oriented means for guiding activities and their transformations. Detailed real-life examples of germ-cell concepts show how they can radically influence the course of development in different activities. Helping to identify and foster the formation of potentially powerful concepts in fields of practice, it is essential reading for researchers, advanced students and practitioners across human and social sciences.
How Does Analysis Cure?

Adult Mindfulness Training Manual
The basic aim of this manual is to present the Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) protocol. The programme presented here is mainly based on the original MBCT programme 'Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression' by Segal, Williams and Teasdale (2002). In addition, some explanations, activities and practices proposed in the subsequent books 'Mindfulness: How to Find Peace in a Frenzied World' by Williams and Penman (2015) and 'Practical Mindfulness Manual: Mindfulness Meditation' by Teasdale, Williams and Segal (2016) were added, which emphasise not only depressive symptoms, but also anxiety and stress symptoms. The protocol was structured over six weeks in order to provide the understanding and skills necessary for the therapist to transmit basic knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as mindfulness practices to the participants. As such, the format of this manual is intended to support and guide you through the six-week programme based on MBCT. The route to understanding and replicating the programme will be explained in detail in this book.
The Motivation of Members of the Voluntary Police Service in BW
Bandura's learning theory (1977/1999) and his indirect value transmission theory in which the norms and the culture of the family and the society are transmitted, can arguably support the development of motivations to apply for the police service. Like-wise, identified procedures count for applying to the 'Freiwillige Polizeidienst'. Volunteers have a variety of motives, mainly altruistic, social and egoistic. The results show that volunteers are not always aware of their motives, which supports similar researches in the United Kingdom.
Talking Men's Health
This book explores male health psychology in relation to chronic health conditions. Using data from men with rheumatic diseases as a starting point, this book draws on the wider literature to focus on how men talk about different aspects of living with long-term health issues. This includes how men discuss the impact of chronic illness on their sense of control and self-reliance, masculine identity, body image, mental health, sex and intimacy, and for those living with a life-limiting condition how they discuss facing their mortality. It also covers how men self-manage and what influences their help-seeking behaviours. Whilst men are often branded as 'hard to reach', the author argues that when given permission and provided with the right environment, men will talk about their health. This book takes the stance men are under-served by health services and includes suggestions for developing support services for health and mental health that meet men's needs and preferences. Focussing on the experiences and support needs of men with long-term conditions, this is an ideal reading for clinicians, healthcare professionals, and practitioners working with men with long-term conditions, as well as early career researchers and students interested in male psychology, men's health, and gender and society.

The Routledge International Handbook of Psychoanalysis and Philosophy
The contributors to this handbook conduct a rigorous, innovative and distinctive analysis of the relationship between philosophy and psychoanalysis. Emphasising that any psychoanalytic subject or school necessarily involves philosophical reflection, the book examines the ways in which psychoanalysis and philosophy inform and intersect with each other - sometimes in mutual support, and sometimes in intense conflict. The book includes contributions from leading researchers across the world, both established and emerging, and traces the current state of the art in psychoanalysis and philosophy by exploring key issues, themes, topics and debates across the field.
Obesity in Adolescence
Adolescence is a time of discovery, choices and adapting to new concepts. At this time, dealing with current aesthetic demands becomes a real challenge. In the eternal media game in which we live, the expression 'You can lose kilos in a few days' tends to demarcate the meaning given to excess weight, and corroborates the false feeling of autonomy/control, passed on by extremely seductive and opinion-forming adverts. Involved in a problem of social and aesthetic devaluation, young people see the meaning and significance of weight gain and excess as a stage for psychological suffering, and the displacement of ambivalent feelings by a single look at the controversial ideal or idealised image. In this sense, children's bodies take on a great deal of responsibility in this scenario of transformation that was once natural, but is now accelerated and mutilated, seeking to follow trends in order to fit in with other people's desires. However, adolescents, whose expected bodily changes translate emotional experiences as significant, find in obesity a support for their fragility, demanding fragments of a story to be understood.
The body-psyche relationship
This book discusses the body-psyche relationship - in a historical context - through the contributions that psychoanalytic theory and Jungian theory - each with its own framework - bring to understanding the subject. It is didactic material that offers an initiation for those who wish it. It also provides an understanding of the participation of Freud's and Jung's praxis in the body-psyche relationship and in contemporary psychosomatic apprehensions. The transition from the paradigm of modernity to the paradigm of complexity - which we have been witnessing ever since - and the concept of transdisciplinarity, pointed out by Edgar Morin, have been emphasised here in the current entanglement of the sciences and are postulated, in this dissertation, inexorably, as the ideal model for their applicability.
The family circle in psychoanalysis with children
When it comes to psychoanalytic treatment of children, one is faced, on the one hand, with the importance of family relationships in subjectivation and, on the other, with the undeniable particularity of the subject, active in its own constitution. This multifactoriality has led the author of this book to question her own clinical practice with children. What to do with the family when the patient is the child? How can the family be included in the analytical setting without jeopardising the child's autonomy and voice? Is it possible to leave out of the analysis those who are present in the encounters necessary for the formation of the subject? This book sets out to show how the psychologist tried to use the stones that came up along the way to (re)think the possibilities of care. Faced with this crossroads, she questioned how psychoanalytic theory has understood the family throughout its history. In order to update the discussion, the book includes interviews with psychoanalysts who work with children. The reader is invited to take part in this incessant questioning. After all, it is through relationships with otherness, through intersubjective exchanges, that children form their subjective position, and analysts position themselves in their work.
A Study with Male Fathers
The act of adoption is an intriguing subject that generates many different debates and controversies, especially in the legal and psychosocial spheres. The adoption-paternity-homosexuality relationship calls for further reflection, given that society has undergone major transformations in the family sphere and in the social roles of men and women. The aim of this study was to analyse the perception of paternity and adoption among male parents in the context of homosexuality. This is a descriptive field study with a qualitative approach. The sample used was non-probabilistic for convenience. Five homosexual male parents aged 35-55 who had adopted children took part. The instruments used were a semi-structured interview containing specific questions about the object of study in question, and a socio-demographic questionnaire with questions about age, income, occupation, etc. The interviews were analysed according to inclusion procedures in ex post facto Thematic Categories.
Motivation scale
Within the context of leadership in education as a differentiating dimension of teacher performance in Portugal, its impact on the level of teacher motivation stands out, which will be the focus of this research project. Self-determination theory proposes a multidimensional conceptualisation of motivation and distinguishes how different types of motivation can be promoted or discouraged. In order to apply it to the educational context, this study aimed to adapt and validate the Multidimensional Work Motivation Scale (MWMS). The scale was answered by 468 teachers in 30 school groups in the north and centre of Portugal. Factor analysis indicated a 19-item scale with a factor structure similar to that obtained in the original studies. This study found that the items that make up the MWMS are good indicators of the constructs they are intended to measure in an educational context and that the factors are properly individualised. The scale showed five robust dimensions common to the original scale studies. The dimension with the best internal consistency is demotivation and introjected regulation is the lowest.
Lifestyle Diseases in Adolescents
Lifestyle diseases and related conditions present a major healthcare challenge for children, posing a significant threat to their well-being. The Editors have compiled chapters to present a multicentric approach to the subject. This book is an insightful reference on lifestyle diseases and its management in adolescents. It includes ten chapters with a focus on systemic disorders that are linked to lifestyle issues. Topics in this volume include gut microbiome and gastrointestinal disorders, neurological disorders, dental diseases, respiratory diseases and allergies associated with pesticides, cancer, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and common infectious diseases. The book highlights the risk factors and determinants of these diseases, and where an immediate intervention is needed. An updated understanding of the diseases with scientific references gives readers crucial information for setting the groundwork for long-term public health policy formulation. This book serves as a primary resource for scholars and trainees in nursing, medical (pediatrics and endocrinology) and paramedical courses who are required to understand lifestyle diseases with a focus on adolescents. Readers and professionals in public health, life-sciences and related disciplines can also use this as a secondary reference.
The Adolescent Body in Education
Adolescents go through physical, emotional, physiological and psychological transformations that interfere with their learning and intellectual capacity. The author brought the conflict of this phase to the fore, exploring body development, as well as proprioception and the sensations that emerge from the body and psyche. Deepening and studying the body/mind relationship was necessary in order to understand knowledge and development during adolescence. Learning is also seen here as a process of knowing the internal world, which is the individual's perception of themselves, their emotional and physical sensations, their loving relationship with family, friends, educators, the social environment and the technological universe that will form the cognitive process. Research into the physiology of the body, the development and functioning of the brain and the formation of the psyche is of great help to parents, educators and adolescents themselves. This knowledge is essential. The theories of Bioenergetic Analysis and Biosynthesis, which believe that 'body and mind' are integrated, have corroborated that emotional and bodily self-perception is the key to intelligence and learning.

What Do Sex and Gender Have to Do with It? The Selected Papers of Nancy Kulish
Kulish's What Do Sex and Gender Have to Do with It? is essential reading for psychoanalytic thinkers and clinicians, working with female sexuality and gender issues. With Frida Kahlo, Greek mythology, and The Secret Garden in her imagination, Kulish makes a brilliant innovative contribution to the analysis of the female triadic stage. Her clinical vignettes address female erotic transference, competition, exhibitionism, longing for the nurturing mother, fears of her loss. Kulish's book will change the reader's ways of listening to patients, to bodily secrets, hidden desires, paternal transferences to female analysts. Her work boldly questions accepted theory, aware of gender biases in patient and analyst, deeply embedded in our culture. Every paper contains gems of clinical observation and conceptual insight, conveyed in Kulish's limpid prose.- Dr. Margaret Ann Fitzpatrick Hanly, PhD

Bereavement and Terminality
Death causes anguish and fear in most people. Thus, when a pathology without a cure reveals the proximity of the end of life, it brings with it various conflicts. This book seeks to describe what has been published in the last five years on the contributions of Hospital Psychology in the care of terminally ill patients and/or palliative care. It also aims to contribute to scientific knowledge on the subject and the development of new research into practicable interventions during patients' terminality. An integrative bibliographic review was carried out between 2009 and 2014, using the following databases: Peri籀dicos Eletr繫nicos em Psicologia - (PEPsic); Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). They were identified using descriptors. Content analysis was carried out after acquiring the results, which point to the minimal development of studies on the subject during the period in question, as well as contemporary society's lack of preparation for dealing with terminality.

Analyzing Memory
An accessible synthesis of memory research that discusses the creation of memory representations, the processes of storage and retrieval, and the effectiveness of encoding information. The field of memory research is subdivided into many separate and non-overlapping topic areas that often employ specialized tools and models. This book offers an accessible synthesis of memory research that explores how memory works, how it is organized, and how it changes dynamically. Written by an expert in the field, it can be used by undergraduate and graduate students of psychology and as a reference by researchers who want to fill in gaps in their knowledge. The book focuses on three general topics that cover a vast amount of research in the field: how a memory representation is created, how the cognitive processes of storage and retrieval can be studied and measured, and the process of encoding information and its varying degrees of effectiveness. Specific subjects addressed include habituation and sensitization, and the neurobiological changes that underlie them; evidence for a cognitive component underlying Pavlovian conditioning; biological constraints on a cognitive model of memory; an information-processing framework for memory; misconceptions about memory, including the static memory myth and the permanent memory myth; model-based measurement of storage and retrieval processes; a critique of the concept of memory strength; the distinction between implicit and explicit memory; and learning and repetition. Although the writing is accessible to the nonspecialist, the density of information is high. The text avoids jargon, and a glossary defines key terms. The notes expand on technical details and point to interesting related ideas.
Turner's Social Work Treatment
First published in 1974, Turner's Social Work Treatment remains the most popular and trusted compendium of theories available to social work students and practitioners. It explores the full range of theoretical approaches that drive social work treatment and knowledge development, from psychoanalysis to crisis intervention. A treasure trove of practice knowledge, the text equips professionals with a broad array of theoretical approaches, each of which shine a spotlight on a different aspect of the human condition. Emphasizing the importance of a broad-based theoretical approach to practice, it helps readers avoid the pitfalls of becoming overly identified with a narrow focus that limits their understanding of clients and their contexts. This sweeping overview of the field untangles the increasingly complex problems, ideologies, and value sets that define contemporary social work practice. The result is an essential A-to-Z reference that charts the full range of theoretical approaches available to social workers, regardless of their setting or specialty.
