From Complaint to Analytical Symptom
For a long time, hysteria remained on the fringes of pathology, often treated as something spiritual or as a pretence. Charcot dedicated a large part of his study to this illness, using hypnotic suggestion as a tool, and with this he managed to eliminate symptoms in sick patients and add them to healthy patients. It was in observing this discovery, together with Breuer's findings with Anna O. that Freud began to formulate his psychological roots for hysterical symptoms. In his consultations, he heard something between the lines of hysteria's discourse, which led him to want to know more, and in this search he encountered sexuality and the unconscious roots of the symptoms of neuroses. These findings culminated in what is now known as psychoanalysis. So, hysteria taught Freud theory, and how? In the stories of the hysterics he saw in his consulting room. Therefore, retracing this path and once again giving voice to the incessant chatter of this neurosis is a way of understanding how the knowledge of psychoanalysis was built. This book is an invitation to retrace this path in order to introduce the understanding of the symptom for psychoanalysis.

Warrior Withdrawal
While returning home might seem like the easy part, for many veterans, the transition back to civilian life after months in a war zone is almost as difficult as the deployment itself. In Warrior Withdrawal, Varpas de Sa Pereira, PsyD, explores this phenomenon by describing his own experiences with combat and the stories of veterans struggling to adjust to "normal" life. When Varpas, a US Marine, returned home after a tour in Iraq, it wasn't the restful break from gunfire and taking orders that he had hoped. He was irritable and angry and itched to return to the battlefield. After his eighth tour to a combat zone, he tried to treasure the precious time he had with his wife and kids, but he couldn't get the clarity of purpose he'd had while deployed out of his mind. After deploying several more times, searching for some "thing" he was missing, he finally retired and went back to school to study clinical psychology. It was then that he realized what he had experienced was not abnormal. Many veterans, for whom being a warrior is ingrained in their psyche, struggle to adapt to life outside the military, often leading them to mental health challenges. Varpas coined this as Warrior Withdrawal Syndrome and now works as a psychotherapist to help veterans facing difficulties in their newfound lives. Whether you're a veteran or a loved one of a veteran, Warrior Withdrawal is a fantastic tool to help you understand the effects of combat on servicemen as well as work to overcome the desire for deployment.

Art therapy for gifted adults
Academic Paper from the year 2024 in the subject Psychology - Consulting and Therapy, grade: 10, Lesley University, language: English, abstract: This anthology delves into the theory of giftedness in adults and discusses how creative practice can aid in addressing the trauma resulting from the late recognition of neurodivergence. The research question aimed to explore how gifted adults experienced personal growth and change as a result of engaging in their own art practice. To allow participants to describe change in their own terms, I utilized the concepts of "Understanding, Acceptance, and Transformation" during our interactions. Although I used these terms, I delved deeper into distinguishing between change and transformation. Change was perceived as a temporary phenomenon, while transformation was seen as a more profound and enduring outcome. Transformation was considered as a characteristic trait, while change was viewed as a temporary state. For this study, I embraced a broad concept of transformation known as psychospiritual transformation, which represents a comprehensive and all-encompassing perspective on the various types of personal transformation a person might undergo. This concept is closely linked to transpersonal theory and involves a sustained and profound reorganization of a person's psychological and spiritual ways of being, their experiences, as well as their self-concept and worldview.
How Stories Change Us
In recent years, gold-standard experimental evidence on the benefits of reading fiction has exploded. Why do we love stories from books, TV and movies, and videogames? What do fictional stories have to do with stories from real life? How do stories impact our own and our children's brain development, reading skills, social understanding, and well-being? In How Stories Change Us, Elaine Reese integrates the latest scientific research on stories from fiction (books, TV shows and movies, videogames) with stories from real life (our personal experiences, including on social media) across the lifespan. The book offers an authoritative yet accessible overview of the new interdisciplinary science of stories, told by a developmental psychologist and autobiographical memory expert with over thirty years of experience conducting research on stories. Throughout, Reese adopts a developmental perspective by tracing the impact of stories from pre-birth to old age. Drawing upon illustrative examples from her 20-year longitudinal study Origins of Memory as well as from her own life, Reese synthesizes cutting-edge research on the benefits and pitfalls of stories and offers practical tips for parents, teachers, librarians, and policymakers. Reese concludes that people have a preferred fictional story delivery system, whether it's reading, watching, or gaming, and she advocates for a more integrated science of stories to allow us to better choose the stories we consume and tell.

Don't Be Sad. Personalized Emotional Feedback Inhibits Auditory Learning
Master's Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Psychology - Miscellaneous, grade: 2,1, Technical University of Chemnitz (Institut f羹r Medienforschung), course: Forschungskolloquium der Professur Psychologie Digitaler Lernmedien, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of personalized negative emotional feedback on learning performance in an online learning environment. In addition to this primary focus, the study also considers the mediating role of mental effort and extraneous cognitive load (ECL), as well as the moderating effect of learner orientation. A 2x2 between-subjects experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of emotion (sadness versus anger) and personalization (for example, "The outcome of your efforts is unfavorable" versus "The outcome is unfavorable") on learning performance, mental effort, extraneous cognitive load, and learner orientation. Participants engaged with an online learning material and received brief emotional feedback without justification. A single choice test and self-reported scales were used to assess learning performance, mental effort, ECL, and learner orientation. The results demonstrated a significant difference in learning performance between the conditions. Pairwise comparisons revealed that learners in the sad non-personalized condition achieved significantly better learning outcomes than those in the sad personalized condition, with a medium effect size. Furthermore, the results indicate, in a descriptive and non-statistically significant manner, that learners in the personalized angry condition achieved better learning outcomes than those in the non-personalized angry condition. The b-path of the mediation model for mental effort was significant, indicating that mental effort partially mediated the relationship between personalization, emotion, and learning performance. ECL did not mediate this relationship. The moderating role of learner orientation was not found to

Scientific Answer to Human Relations
2024 Reprint of the 1951 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Russell argues that the present state of civilization is a world revolution against all that is good and beautiful and lovely. It is a world revolution against peace, happiness and love, even to the destruction of the God of peace, and love and beauty. It can only end in the bloodiest and most costly war in human history unless the cause of this division of the contended and discontented is removed and the human race united as one for the common good of all man. In this short treatise he presents his analysis of this period of distress and proposes a scientific solution to it.

Contemporary Issues on Adolescents and Counseling
Adolescence is widely recognized as a transition period characterized by rapid developmental changes. While the transition is from childhood to adulthood, the developmental changes are biologically, psychologically and socially inclined. For many adolescents, the period is full of crisis because of their inability to adjust to the demands of this phase of life. Some of the effects of maladjustment at this stage include, but are not limited to, unwanted pregnancies and abortions, school drop-out, sexual abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, addictive behavior, disobedience to parents and authorities, religious intolerance, and poor eating habits. The future development of any nation relies on the smooth transition of adolescents to become adults. Information and research on how this could be achieved will be needed. Similarly, proper professional counselling will go a long way in preparing adolescents for the tasks of building themselves and the nation. This textbook, therefore, aims to provide knowledge on contemporary information and research on adolescents and counselling practices in Nigeria. The text is divided into two sections, providing theoretical and empirical information on adolescents' addiction, challenges, disabilities, mental health, religiosity, self-esteem, sexual behavior, social and interpersonal relationships, and counselling intervention. This text is an indispensable companion for professionals in the fields of counselling/psychology, mental health, and social work as well as students and instructors in secondary and tertiary institutions. Contemporary Issues on Adolescents and Counseling is a collection of articles from seasoned scholars, mainly professors and senior academics, in Counseling and related areas of specialization. The book focuses on essays and research on the concepts of adolescence, adolescents and their attributes, challenges, and counseling interventions to help them overcome challenges. I strongly recommend this book to students, teachers of education, policy makers in education, practicing counselors, and social workers who work with adolescents. -Tolu Koyejo-Ogunleye, Ph.D, Professor of Counseling Psychology This book interrogates contemporary issues in adolescence and adolescent counseling. When rape leads to pregnancy
Using a comprehensive, qualitative approach, this research focuses on a problematic social phenomenon: the rape of young Burundian women, some of whom become pregnant after the assault. This research aims to understand the experiences associated with the aggressor's pregnancy borne by a victim evolving in a highly patriarchal Burundian society. The research shows how victims of such pregnancies are left to fend for themselves in a context of discrimination and socio-economic precariousness. This situation leads some of them to terminate their pregnancies, exposing themselves to legal proceedings, as voluntary abortion is criminalized by Burundian penal law and demonized by the collective imagination.

It presents some general considerations about the helping relationship and discusses the skills and procedure of the four steps inherent in this process: attuning, responding, personalizing and guiding. The article proposes to consider the importance of non-verbal communication in order for the helping relationship process to be successful.

Dismantling White Supremacy in Counseling
The rise of White nationalism has been a global phenomenon, drawing more attention to race and racism, and creating a heightened sense of White identity. As demographics in North America shift, White people are becoming increasingly aware of the racist structures and sentiments that have been embedded in society for centuries. While mainstream political rhetoric appears moderate on the surface, it also appeals to extremist views. There is an increase in hate speech and hate crime targeting members of equity-deserving groups.White therapists and clients are overrepresented as counsellors and psychotherapists, while Indigenous, Black and People of Colour are significantly underrepresented. Multicultural counseling often tends to prioritize "others" from "different cultures", while the training in multicultural practice crucial it tends to underemphasize systemic forces. Social justice considers power differentials and systemic contributors, but with a broad focus on anti-oppressive practice. Antiracist practice explicitly targets White supremacy and its effects on marginalized communities. There is relatively little written for White therapists about how they and their White clients can dismantle White supremacy.Structural barriers rooted in White supremacy have a detrimental effect on all people, but the most disadvantaged are Indigenous, Black, and People of Colour. By drawing attention to this issue, and building support among White practitioners, Jason Brown aims to dismantle White supremacy in professional activities with clients, in the profession itself, and in public policy.

Psychoanalytic Interventional Psychodiagnosis in Childhood
Psychoanalytic interventional psychodiagnosis (PIOP) is a clinical research method that integrates psychological assessment and intervention simultaneously throughout the process, which makes it therapeutic in itself. In this sense, this book provides the reader with the theoretical foundations of this clinical practice in children with anxiety symptoms. It also presents the analysis and discussion of six clinical cases, one of which covers the entire case report. In the discussion of the cases, the reader will be able to follow how the diagnosis was made, the understanding of intrapsychic dynamics and the interventions in each psychodiagnosis. To this end, in addition to the interviews, psychometric instruments and projective techniques were used, along with interventions that were applied to both the children and their parents. The last part of this book offers a general discussion of the results achieved for each child, as well as the limitations of the method.
