Religious Accommodation for Military Members in the Twenty-First Century
This paper assesses the Air Force#65533;s current policy on religious accommodation and then develops a descriptive alternative to the current policy that addresses shortfalls uncovered in the current policy. Changes in society, laws, and emerging religious trends catalyzed by the military services#65533; unique culture have created an ambiguous social context regarding the free exercise of religion in the United States Air Force. Members and leaders lack sufficient standards by which they can test the benefits of the free expression of faith against a set of identified compelling governmental interests. The lack of definite guidance unnecessarily restricts the constitutional guaranteed free exercise of religion and denies leaders the ability to leverage the pre-existing religious beliefs of members to the mutual benefit of the individual and the organization. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Advent in Bethlehem
This series of Advent studies takes readers to the Bethlehem of Scripture, and also to Bethlehem today, exploring the connections between people of antiquity and the challenges confronting Christians in the reality of Bethlehem today. The chapters focus on biblical characters connected with Bethlehem: Rachel, Ruth, David, Elijah, Jesus. Biblical, and later Jewish, Christian, and Muslim traditions concerning these figures, and the sites associated with them, are linked with the lived experience of the people of Bethlehem today. This book may be used to accompany private Advent devotions, but can also provide a basis for reflection, exploration, and prayer in church and other Christian fellowship groups.Readers are invited to delve beneath the sentimentality and commercialism of secular festivities, which frequently overwhelm Advent as well as Christmas. As they discover and appreciate something of the lives and struggles of real people, living and historical, Scripture may be opened to them in new ways. The occupation, ever-threatening dispossession, and arbitrary violence of today illuminate the Nativity story and the lives of people of biblical antiquity. They call Christians to share in the prophetic vocation of the Church and to bear witness to Christ's Incarnation in the world today.

Relating Ontological Truth in the Upanishads to Sleep, Dreaming and Schizophrenia Spectrum Models
This book explores the potential relevance of the Upanishads, a corpus of ancient Eastern apophatic texts, to contemporary Western theories of consciousness and psychopathology, particularly in relation to psychoanalysis, neuroscience, and schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. Beginning with an analysis of Upanishadic thought and its historical influence in Europe, this work bridges the gap between ancient wisdom and modern scientific inquiry. It examines the dream theories of psychoanalyst Wilfred Bion in relation to Upanishadic conceptions of the Self, followed by an exploration of contemporary neuroscientific perspectives on selfhood. Further, it delves into the evolution and function of sleep and dreaming in Homo sapiens, proposing a novel heuristic: that schizophrenia-spectrum disorders may be developmentally linked to alterations in the sleep and dreaming systems of the human mind-brain. Offering a unique interdisciplinary synthesis, this text will appeal to scholars and students of philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, and religious studies, as well as those interested in the intersections of ancient meditative traditions and modern scientific paradigms.

Hebrews and Revelation
This monograph demonstrates that the Epistle to the Hebrews and the Book of Revelation are results of highly creative, hypertextual reworking of the Acts of the Apostles. In both cases, this detailed reworking consists of around 700 strictly sequentially organized conceptual and often also linguistic correspondences to Acts. The strictly sequential, hypertextual dependence on Acts explains numerous surprising features of both Hebrews and Revelation. Critical explanations of such features, which are offered in this monograph, ensure the reliability of the new solution to the problem of the identities of Hebrews and Revelation, as well as their relationships to the Lucan, post-Pauline school of literary-theological production.

Strategic Implications of American Millennialism
Since the beginning of the Republic, various forms of millennial religious doctrines, of which dispensational pre-millennialism is the most recent, have shaped U.S. national security strategy. As the dominant form of millennialism in the U.S. evolves, it drives changes in U.S. security policy and subsequent commitment of the instruments of national power. Millennial ideas contribute to a common American understanding of international relations that guide our thinking irrespective of individual religious or political affiliation. Millennialism has great explanatory value, significant policy implications, and creates potential vulnerabilities that adversaries may exploit. In the simplest usage of the word, millennialism refers to any belief system, religious or secular, which anticipates a purification of society or the world through dramatic and sweeping change. In the U.S. today, the most well-known and influential form of millennialism is a religious variant known in formal, theological parlance as dispensational pre-millennialism. This contemporary form of millennialism took shape during the 1970s and has significantly shaped current U.S. security policy. Dispensational pre-millennialism is loosely based on depictions of battle between the forces of good and evil in the biblical Book of Revelation. In the U.S., dispensational pre-millennialism contends that in the very near future Jesus Christ will 'rapture, ' or remove his church from the Earth. A period of intense tribulations and battles will follow, culminating with a cataclysmic defeat of Satan. Jesus would then establish an earthly kingdom for 1,000 years - the millennium. Today, the theological doctrines of dispensational pre-millennialism contribute significantly to American culture. This has resulted in a pervasive sense of determinism and pessimism that has significant implications for U.S. security policy around the world. Military leaders, planners and strategists require greater understanding of AmeriThis work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Muslim Prison Ministry
Prisons and detention centers are recruiting grounds for radical Islamists. The National Military Strategic Plan for the War on Terrorism Campaign Plan does not sufficiently develop a strategy to counter the violent Islamic ideologies in order to hinder conversions of detainees into terrorists. Addressing the violent Islamic ideology at the grass roots level may decrease the number of terrorist recruitment and increase the number of Muslims appealing to a nonviolent interpretation of the Qur'an. The author recommends an anti-violent Islamic ministry program which educates detainees and prisoners through Muslim clerics. Islamic and western countries are relying on moderate Muslim ministers to promote nonviolent ideologies to counter the terrorist recruitment. Egypt and Yemen are witnessing conversions by militant Islamists to moderate Muslims. The United Kingdom and France are appealing to moderate Muslim clerics to address the growing number of radicalized citizens in their prisons. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons Muslim chaplaincy program offers a framework to select Muslim religious service providers for a Muslim prison ministry program. Sufficient legal, ethical and moral framework exists to argue for the availability of a ministry program to personnel in U.S. custody. This indirect approach focuses on conflict resolution and relies on Muslims who reject the violent interpretation of the Qur'an, commentaries, the hadith, the fiqh and the law. The solution is not an ecumenical reconciliation of the various religions of the world but a peaceful coexistence beginning with an intellectual understanding of the ideologies and empathy for the Muslims caught in the war between terrorist and the coalition forces trying to defeat the terrorist networks. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Tiger Leaping Captured a River
Color EditionWhy is this book important? This book is important because it not only speaks of the geophysical history of China but also affirms the truth of the Holy Bible's global Flood and the Creator's purpose in the horrific cataclysm which left only eight human survivors from whom all humans living today derive. The Chinese have pondered for millennia what force seemingly changed the course of the upper Yangtze River (Jinsha Jiang, the Gold Sand River), racing southward off the uplifting Tibetan Plateau in far western China, to abruptly turn eastward to flow then through Chongqing, Wuhan, Nanjing, and Shanghai - the heartland of China. The phenomenon of river capture - the course change of a river channel following a major flood - is well known today to geologists and river engineers. Author Vernon Bissell, as a "rivers professional," records in this bilingual (English and simplified Chinese) book the monumental upper Yangtze River capture during the falling levels of the Bible Flood, the greatest flood in recorded history. It was the famed Tiger Leaping Gorge in Yunnan Province - cut down during highest flows to less than 6,000 ft elevation between two 18,000-foot "snow mountain" peaks separated peak to peak by only 16 miles - that snagged the great river to bless (and sometimes trouble) China's land and people. What makes this book credible? First, the Holy Bible has uncountable affirmations of authenticity, so Flood evidences in China just add to a long list of global Flood evidences around the world - no surprise to Bible readers. More affirmation? Numerous ancient Chinese oral histories of a great flood, written language characters, and unmistakable Flood remnants speak persistently and consistently to any inquirer. And for the world's filling population, the final chapter deals with God's Flood purpose to also bless mankind following the great terrible cataclysm, including great promises for the finally reconstituted people of Israel in the land of Israel.
Does Osama Bin Laden Have It Right? Islam, Violence, and the Way Forward
We are more than six years into a war allegedly perpetrated by radical Islamic fundamentalists. Our elected leaders have told us that these Muslim terrorists constitute only a small percentage of the Islamic population and that Islam is a religion of peace. What if they are wrong? What if Osama bin Laden is right, and Islam is inherently violent and intolerant? In this paper, I will show how the Islamic texts of the Koran and Hadith1 and the example of the Muslim Prophet Muhammad actually directs Muslims to spread Islam by any means necessary; to include the forced conversion, subjugation and murder of non-believers. While there are sections of these religious texts that advocate tolerance and peaceful existence, I will explain how the Islamic principle of abrogation renders them obsolete. In short, I will show why Osama bin Laden's interpretation of Islam is right and discuss what this means for our future. There is a lot more bloodshed to come where Muslims interact with non-Muslims unless the moderate Muslims are able to redefine the fundamental ideology of their faith and completely discount the violent verses of the Koran and the Hadith. All Muslims must accept the worldview that all people are entitled to religious freedom, the premise that Islam must peacefully coexist with other religions and the fact that violent expansion will not be tolerated. These things will not be easy for Muslims to accept. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Transition and Transformation in Hungary
Moving from communist regimes to democratically elected governments in 1990 initiated radical political, economic, and cultural transition in Central and Eastern Europe. Emerging from the shadows of communist rule in Hungary - visible in the widespread presence of corruption, autocratic leadership, and counter-economy - how can personal Christian values bring lasting change to the work, leadership, and business activities of individuals and their organizations?Bridging the gap between secular and sacred in philosophy, theology, and business studies, Krisztina Ol獺h seeks to define how the integrated life of those Christians in business can be the solution to widespread corruption. With academic rigor and interdisciplinary scope, Ol獺h's qualitative interviews and survey data present empirical insight from experienced Christian business leaders as well as authentic perspectives on ethical leadership to lay out practical tools in overcoming the challenges they face. This exploration of post-communist transformation in the Hungarian context will have relevance to any scholar, practitioner, or Christian business leader who longs to see the practice of biblical values reshape their environment.
