Great American Hot Rods
Great American Hot Rods chronicles over 360 amazing cars from the streets, shows, and strips of America. The strict criterion of featuring only pre-1949 cars is observed, but beyond that, anything goes! The author identifies and codifies the four main categories of rod that cruise our streets today. "Hardcore" rods are the purist form of the genre, and set out to recreate the original days of low-budget builds, using junkyard parts, and are resplendent with prime and rust. "Traditional" rods adhere to the styles of yesteryear, but utilize modern parts. "Performance" rods are built using race-inspired components to be the quickest machines around. "Street" rods are built with the best and most modern parts available, and are designed for drivability and comfort, capable of being drive long distances to shows. By contracts, for "Show" rods, practicality takes a back seat to the "Wow!" factor. These pampered cars are even trailered to events to keep them in prime condition. As you can see, the world of the rod is a very broad church, where "hardcore" and "show" cars are the complete antithesis of one another. Great American Hot Rods is a tribute to the ingenuity of both amateur and professional automotive engineers over the last fifty years. Some of these cars have been rebuilt several times, while others are spookily original, their doors autographed by their famous drivers. Some of these rods are stars in their own right, having appeared in movies such as American Graffiti, or on TV, such as Ed "Cookie" Byrnes's car in 77 Sunset Strip. Big Daddy (AKA Ed Roth)'s landmark car is also featured. All of the featured cars are genuine, living pieces of Americana, and represent a fascinating and worthy part of our fabulous automotive heritage.
Aston Martin: The V8 Legacy
This book charts the origins, design and development of the most iconic British supercar of the 1970s and 1980s - the Aston Martin V8. It traces the car's origins from the introductory model of 1967, the DBS, through the various iterations of the V8 versions, and ends with the final models of the range and the spectacular Vantage Zagato. While the car started life with Aston Martin's ageing six-cylinder engine, it quickly received the engine the car was originally designed for; Aston Martin's mighty quad cam V8. The V8 would would power the car through the 70s and 80s, and with various tweaks and tunes would keep Aston Martin's reputation as a vendor of fast, high-performance coupes alive through some very troubling times. The book covers the whole family of standard production cars produced by Aston Martin, along with various special versions, including the Ogle-designed 'Sotheby Special', the Siva S350 and the 'Bulldog' which recently broke the 200mph barrier. Alongside the specials the book also looks at the racing variants, including the Le Mans Lola of 1967, the spectacular V8 production racer run by Robin Hamilton (nicknamed 'the muncher' thanks to its spectacular performance meaning it would eat is brakes for breakfast) and the Nimrod, which saw Aston Martin return to Le Mans in the 1980s. It also looks at the car in film and on the small screen, with James Bond looming large ('On Her Majesty's Secret Service' and 'The Living Daylights') and with Roger Moore cavorting about Europe with Tony Curtis in the popular TV series 'The Persuaders!' polishing the cars celebrity credentials. With some 70,000 words and 250+ pictures, many never seen before, this book pays homage to the The Aston Martin V8. The V8 was the poster car for the patriotic British teenager of the 1970s and 1980s, providing a glimmer of hope that Britain could produce a world beating performance car that was the match of Italian exotica and American muscle. The Aston Martin V8 was that world beater, a car with superlative looks, amazing performance, unparalleled luxury and tough, reliable underpinnings. This book is a heartfelt tribute to the car that kept Aston Martin's hopes and British automotive dreams alive, a car that is now starting to be recognised for the true British supercar it always has been.

Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale
An exclusive account, design to delivery, from the designers of an automative icon, and its newest, soon-to-be legendary model, the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. In 1967, Alfa Romeo created the 33 Stradale, considered one of the most beautiful automobiles of all time. In 2023, Alfa Romeo embarked on creating an heir to this legendary vehicle, producing just thirty-three cars that update and celebrate the famous original. In its more than 110-year history, Alfa Romeo has produced cars admired for their design and performance. Henry Ford said he tipped his hat whenever an Alfa Romeo went by. And Enzo Ferrari, who drove an Alfa Romeo before becoming a great automaker himself, once remarked that "at Alfa Romeo they know how to sew gloves for flies." This book tells the story of the car's history and epic redesign in the words of its makers, from the CEO who conceived the project, to the style director who reimagined its elegant lines, to the engineers who made its extraordinary performance a reality. Readers enter into the style center itself, viewing early drafts and the process of creating the prototype, and eventually the models customized for collectors worldwide, each of whom paid a high price for these exclusive vehicles before a single one was even produced.
Mercedes-AMG
Take a lap through the complete illustrated history of the powerful Mercedes-AMG, from the Red Pig racer to today's 1063-plus horsepower Mercedes-AMG ONE. For decades Mercedes-Benz was known primarily as a builder of luxury sedans, grand touring coupes, and handsome roadsters. But racers like its 1950s Silver Arrows and the stunning 300SL were reminders that performance lurked in its DNA, never far below the surface. Wanting to set that performance free, two former Mercedes-Benz engineers, Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher, teamed up in 1967 to focus on building M-B-based racing machines. Mercedes-AMG recounts the unlikely, amazing story of how they remade a stodgy Benz sedan into the all-conquering Red Pig racer and thus launched one of Germany's greatest high-performance car companies: AMG. Considerable success in endurance and touring-class competition led AMG to a second business modifying production Mercedes-Benzes for enthusiast customers. By the 1980s, AMG was designing and building high-performance engine assemblies allowing them to modify M-B engines to previously unknown levels of performance. Thus were born legendary cars like the AMG Hammer. Mercedes was well aware of AMG's success, and in 1990 a formal arrangement was made between the two companies leading to jointly developed performance cars sold and serviced through M-B dealerships. In 2005, M-B purchased AMG outright, leading to the creation of Mercedes-AMG, the high-performance arm of the company. Mercedes-AMG covers the full history of these German powerhouse cars, including: Early racing exploits in the 1960sThe iconic Hammer and Black Series carsToday's exclusive, high-performance Mercedes-AMG models ranging from the 420hp A45 hatchback to the 680hp C63 station wagon to the outrageous 1063hp Mercedes-AMG ONEPrototypes, racing, and special models This beautifully illustrated volume belongs on every Mercedes enthusiast's shelf.

Carlines to the Columbia
A richly illustrated history tracing the rise and fall of streetcars in Northeast Portland from 1888 to 1948.The story of the role played by streetcars in the development of Northeast Portland, Oregon begins in 1888, when rails were laid northward through virgin timber and bottomland towards the Columbia River. Tracks soon also extended eastward along a prehistoric dirt road leading toward the Columbia Slough. Many twists and turns were encountered before the last steel wheel turned in 1948.This tale of technological change, entrepreneurship, and murder is illustrated with carefully selected archival photographs, many never published. The first horse-drawn streetcars are seen plodding along Grand Avenue in 1888. The steam "dummies" that took over are remembered in an 1893 image showing a fatal derailment. Amazing scenes depict narrow-gauge interurbans hurtling across high trestles. A unique subject is The Dragon, the system's only articulated streetcar. Beauty is on display in views of Portland's last new cars, the streamlined Broadways of 1932.Each chapter focuses on a classic city line that served Northeast Portland and begins with a map created for the book. A final section brings things up to date following the introduction of light rail here in 2001.

The Transportation Right of Way
Rethinking Transportation Design, Operation, and RegulationToo often, transportation systems fail the very people they are meant to serve. Although engineers and policymakers design systems based on industry standards, real-world users-drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians-face hazards that are often overlooked. From poorly maintained winter roads to a misalignment in expected versus actual usage due to human factors, these oversights put lives at risk.Forensic transportation engineer Robert Gilchrist evaluates conventional thinking in transportation engineering through a human lens. By discussing the disconnect between industry standards and real-world conditions, he encourages a user-centric approach-one that considers human factors, environmental challenges, and the true cost of system failures. Through case studies, regulation analysis, and expert insights, he challenges current practice and supports an adjustment of baseline thinking to improve safety and decision-making.With decades of experience investigating transportation failures, Gilchrist provides a compelling, accessible guide for engineers, policymakers, lawyers, and system users alike to inspire safer, smarter transportation systems.

MERCEDES-BENZ, The modern SL cars
This 370 page guide covers the history of the four modern SL: the 1971 R107, 1989 R129, 2001 R230 and 2012 R231. It looks at their individual history, engines, facelifts and discusses the AMG versions from the early 500SL 6.0 to the latest SL65. It talks about the designs, special editions and what selected tuners such as Brabus, Renntech or Carlsson had to offer. Complete technical specifications and annual production data of each model can be found towards the end of the book. A few readers have suggested to have each of the four models covered in greater detail. This would have blown up this book to over 800 pages. Given the number of photos included, the price for such a book would have been much too high. But to follow this proposal, the author has decided to give each model more room in individual books. So far the R107, R129 and R230 SL are covered in separate volumes. Published in summer and autumn 2015, they are over 200 pages strong. Each book comes with a comprehensive buyer's guide, explains the VIN and data card in detail and discusses which SL to buy, taking into consideration 2015 second hand prices. FREE BONUS: When you have bought one of the author's printed books, you are eligible for a free pdf file of any Mercedes model (such as W111 or W198 or W136 for example) the author has covered in one of his books. PENTON - KTM 1972-1975 JACKPINER 175cc - HARE 250cc - MINT 400cc WORKSHOP MANUAL AND PARTS MANUALS
128 pages and more than 150 illustrations and charts, size 8.25 x 10.75 inches. This manual is a compilation of 3 publications: (1) A workshop manual for the Penton 175cc Jackpiner the 250cc Hare Scrambler and the 400cc Mint models (2) An illustrated Frame and Chassis parts manual and (3) An illustrated 175/250/400cc KTM Engine Parts manual. This publication is also appropriate for the KTM MC(Motocross) and GS(Gelande Sport) machines that utilize these same engines.A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN PENTON AND KTMIn 1967 when John Penton approached KTM (Austria) with a plan to manufacture off-road motorcycles to his design, it was obviously seen as an opportunity by KTM to gain a foothold in the expanding USA off-road motorcycle market. Certainly, having someone like John Penton representing their product was a major win for KTM, as John's prominent status in off-road racing was already well established. The first of the Penton-KTM joint venture motorcycles, the Berkshire 100 and Six Day 125 models, powered by Sachs* engines arrived in the USA in 1968. The use of a Sachs powertrain was an obvious choice for KTM who, without any in-house engine capability, had been using Sachs engines in their moped, scooter and road-going motorcycles since the early 1950's. While the Sachs powered off-road machines established a solid foothold for Penton motorcycles, John began to pressure KTM to construct an engine of their own design. The first of the Penton models powered by KTM engines debuted in 1972 as the 175cc Jackpiner followed in 1973 by the 250cc Hare and the 400cc Mint in 1974. (*See Workshop Manual ISBN 9781588502933 for Sachs powered Pentons). However, KTM was also marketing identical KTM badged bikes as MC (Motocross) and GS (Gelande Sport) models on an international level. Obviously, this did not sit well with John and the situation worsened when those same KTM badged bikes, began to show up on the west coast through a different USA importer. The 1976 MC-5 and Cross Country and the 1977 GS-6 Pentons were also badged and sold as KTM's and the association between John and KTM continued to deteriorate. In the interim, KTM had been pressuring John to relinquish control of his distribution rights and in 1978 KTM purchased both the distribution rights and the company infrastructure and the Penton brand was no more. A sad end to an era of great innovation by John Penton, however, his motorcycles and the identical KTM versions are regarded as some of the best ever to come out of the 1970's off-road motorcycle phenomenon and are highly collectible and still used in vintage events by enthusiasts worldwide. Unfortunately, owners of these early Penton motorcycles are subjected to considerable confusion surrounding the appropriate selection of the multitude of originals and reprints of the various manuals and parts lists that have recently flooded the marketplace. We encourage you to exercise caution when purchasing a manual for your motorcycle or automobile as many of the reprints found on internet websites are from 'bedroom sellers' at enticingly low prices by individuals that have no idea what they are selling. Many are nothing more than poor quality, comb-bound or ring-bound photocopies that are scanned and printed complete with greasy pages and thumbprints and, as such, are deceptively described as 'pre-owned', 'used' or even 'refurbished'. In addition, they are often advertised for the incorrect series and/or model years.
A.J.S. STORMER 1968-1974 350cc - 370cc - 410cc ILLUSTRATED PARTS LIST AND WORKSHOP MANUAL-Floyd Clymer
126 pages with more than 100 illustrations, diagrams and charts, size 8.250 x 10.750 inches. A faithful reproduction of two A.J.S. Stormer factory publications: 1) Workshop Manual part no. 0700606 and 2) the Illustrated Parts List part no. 0700601. The illustrated parts list is becoming increasingly more difficult to find on the secondary market and is often listed for sale at an extortionately high asking price making this combined publication a reasonably priced alternative for owners of these classic motocross motorcycles. By 1974 A.J.S., now under the ownership of Norton Villiers, was in deep financial trouble and former A.J.S. Competition manager Fluff Brown was able to purchase the Stormer manufacturing rights plus the remaining spares from Norton Villiers and he resumed production of Stormer-based machines into the 1980's. Consequently, this publication will also be of interest to owners of those later models. VelocePress.com has been publishing reprints of motorcycle and automobile manuals since 2003 and our publications have earned excellent reviews worldwide so you can be assured you are purchasing a quality product. MAICO 250cc - 360cc - 400cc - 450cc - 501cc 1968-1978 WORKSHOP MANUAL
122 pages and profusely illustrated with more than 200 illustrations, diagrams and charts, size 8.250 x 10.750 inches this manual covers all 1968 to 1978 piston port Motocross, Enduro and Gelande Sport (GS) models. Originally published by Floyd Clymer in 1969 with coverage for the 1969 and earlier 250cc and 360cc models. While this 2025 edition includes all of the information from the original publication, it has been expanded to include data for the 1970 and later 400cc, 450cc and 501cc machines. It also includes an additional 10 page appendix for the 1973 and onwards piston port models, which extends the coverage through 1975, and for some models through 1978. In addition, it includes the 'Competition Preparation' chapter that was omitted from the later publications of the Clymer manual. The additional 10 page appendix for the 1973 and later 250cc, 400cc, 440cc and 501cc models includes exploded parts drawings with appropriate component lists for the engine, front forks, swing arm and rear suspension, front hub and brake and rear hub and brake. It also includes a detailed specification listing plus wiring diagrams for machines both with and without lights. As these machines were designed for competition use, continuous modifications and improvements, without regard to the model year, were made by the factory in order to keep the motorcycles competitive. Consequently, the owner should be aware that the year of production is not a specific identifier for a particular specification. However, as most of the modifications relate to internal dimensional changes, they do not detract from the intent of this workshop manual. The Nebraska Zephyr Story
The Nebraska Zephyr was a streamlined passenger train operated by the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CB&Q, commonly known by the shorter name of "Burlington") between Chicago, Illinois; Omaha, Nebraska; and Lincoln, Nebraska, from 1947 to 1971. Until 1968, the service was provided by two Twin Cities Zephyr articulated trainsets - the "Train of the Gods" and "Train of the Goddesses" - that became synonymous with it. The Nebraska Zephyr was one of many trains discontinued when Amtrak began operations in 1971. The "Train of the Goddesses" set is preserved at the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois.
Hupmobile
Once a proud emblem of Detroit ingenuity, the Hupmobile was born from Robert Craig Hupp's bold vision in 1908: to build a dependable, stylish, and affordable car for America's growing middle class. For more than three decades, Hupmobile delivered on that promise with models that combined engineering reliability with innovative design, from the humble Model 20 to the streamlined Aerodynamic series. But the company's journey was never just about cars. It was a story of bold decisions, rapid expansion, and hard-fought market share in an industry dominated by giants. Through wartime constraints, the roaring boom of the 1920s, and the crushing blow of the Great Depression, Hupmobile adapted, innovated, and at times, gambled everything-introducing eight-cylinder models, hiring famed designer Raymond Loewy, and even partnering with rival Graham-Paige in a desperate bid for survival.By the early 1940s, however, the Hupmobile name faded from the marketplace, its final chapters intertwined with Preston Tucker's ill-fated dream. Today, the surviving cars stand as rare mechanical testaments to a once-mighty independent, cherished by collectors and celebrated at concours fields worldwide.Hupmobile: Ambition and Attrition is the definitive, fact-based chronicle of the marque's rise, struggles, and legacy-a story that mirrors the fate of many early American automakers and offers enduring lessons in vision, competition, and resilience.
Peerless
In the glittering dawn of the American automotive age, three names reigned supreme in luxury: Packard, Pierce-Arrow, and Peerless. While Packard and Pierce-Arrow remain familiar to classic car enthusiasts, Peerless has drifted into the mists of history-a name once synonymous with refinement, technological daring, and bespoke craftsmanship. From its origins as a Cleveland manufacturer of bicycles and brewery equipment to its transformation into a builder of some of the most elegant automobiles ever to grace American roads, Peerless was a marque that lived and breathed the ideals of the Gilded Age and the Roaring Twenties.Peerless: America's Silent Luxury Rival charts the rise, triumph, and eventual fall of this remarkable brand. Drawing on meticulous historical research, it follows the company's pioneering engineering feats, its place among the elite "Three Ps," and its determination to uphold the highest standards of quality in an increasingly mass-produced world. From endurance trials and custom coachwork to the audacious creation of one of America's first V8 engines, Peerless carved its reputation on both innovation and opulence.Yet, the same forces that built Peerless eventually brought it down. The Great Depression decimated the luxury car market, forcing the company into an astonishing pivot-abandoning automobiles altogether to brew beer under the Carling label. Today, only a scattering of Peerless automobiles remain, treasured by collectors and celebrated at the world's finest concours events. This is the story of a name worth remembering, a silent rival whose legacy continues to inspire connoisseurs of craftsmanship and history alike.
Changing Tracks
How to make a 150-year-old run faster, carry more load and make more money In the year 2000, the Indian Railways - the world's second largest railway network under a single management was nearly bankrupt. Over the next eight years, however, there was a dramatic improvement in its performance. From a cash surplus before dividend of Rs 1,071 crores in 2000, it achieved an estimated Rs 25,000 crores (or around Rs 13,000 crores after accounting for all expenditures, receipts and depreciation) in 2008. Alongside came a dynamic and differential tariff policy, and technical changes that led to an enhanced carrying capacity. How all this was accomplished is the focus of this riveting study of change and innovation in the Indian Railways. Based on an extensive examination of internal documents of the Railways and in-depth interviews with key people involved in the change process, authors V. Nilakant and S. Ramnarayan identify four distinctive features associated with the organization's renewal between 2004 and 2008. The change leveraged the strengths of the organization, instead of being preoccupied with its weaknesses. The aim was to change mindsets about costs, revenues, investment and business models. The momentum of the change process was sustained by fostering positive emotions. Changes were persistently and patiently seen to completion by focusing on results. Confronting several myths about organizational change, the book offers powerful lessons for managers and administrators grappling with the challenges of generating innovation and improving performance radically in a changing world.
With a Hammer and a Wrench
When the first edition of this book appeared in Germany in 2003, Soviet and Russian motorcycles were considered the epitome of "junk on wheels". They were just suitable for rough riding fun on one's own property, or only conditionally suitable for everyday use by hopeless optimists. Back then, anyone who dared to take on the adventure of riding a Dnepr or Ural had to be very brave and constantly defend themselves against the taunts of people who knew better. Today-some twenty years later-things don't look much better, but the former cheap imports from the other side of the Iron Curtain have matured into genuine vintage vehicles with a steadily growing fan base. At the same time, the legacy of post-Stalinist mass production has given rise to a small motorcycle manufacture that builds primeval Russian stones to current standards. Riding a Russian motorcycle-whether old or new-is an exceptional way of life. It educates one to slowness, pragmatism, and the ability to suffer. This book helps with that. It is intended to open up the world of these survivors of times long past, primarily to those who are thinking of buying a classic 650cc Ural or Dnepr. Or to give the new "Russian driver" a profound insight into the history of these controversial vehicles. And in particular it should clear up the half-truths and rumors that persist today at the regulars' table or even in the trade press. After more than 100,000 km with his Ural "without any special incidents" (measured by the world view of an Ural driver), the author set to work to combine experiences and interesting facts about history and technology-from the great-grandmother and BMW copy "M72" to the current generation-into a guidebook that quickly established itself as a standard work and is now finally available in English.
All Aboard for Santa Fe
By the late 1800s, the major mode of transportation for travelers to the Southwest was by rail. In 1878, the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company (AT&SF) became the first railroad to enter New Mexico, and by the late 1890s it controlled more than half of the track-miles in the Territory. The company wielded tremendous power in New Mexico, and soon made tourism an important facet of its financial enterprise. All Aboard for Santa Fe focuses on the AT&SF's marketing efforts to highlight Santa Fe as an ideal tourism destination. The company marketed the healthful benefits of the area's dry desert air, a strong selling point for eastern city-dwelling tuberculosis sufferers. AT&SF also joined forces with the Fred Harvey Company, owner of numerous hotels and restaurants along the rail line, to promote Santa Fe. Together, they developed materials emphasizing Santa Fe's Indian and Hispanic cultures, promoting artists from the area's art colonies, and created the Indian Detours sightseeing tours. All Aboard for Santa Fe is a comprehensive study of AT&SF's early involvement in the establishment of western tourism and the mystique of Santa Fe.

Can the Rail Industries Flatcar Inventory Support Two Major Theater Wars?
The ability of U.S. forces to change rapidly from a peacetime to a wartime force (to mobilize and deploy) is vitally important to national security. Successful execution of these movements depends, in large part, on the availability of the required transportation resources. Today's Army is heavily dependent on Department of Defense (DoD) and commercial railcar assets to move its wheeled/tracked vehicles from home forts to seaports of embarkation (SPOEs) to meet prescribed mobilization and deployment timelines. The primary research question answered by this paper is: Can U.S. military and commercial flatcar inventories meet DoD mobilization requirements for Army wheeled/tracked vehicles during two near-simultaneous major theater wars (MTWs)?This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
