RVing On the Wrong Side of the Road
There are books with useful tips about RVing. This isn't one of them. This is a book of stories about everything you don't want to do if you vacation in an RV.Instead of clever suggestions for safety or ease of operation, it's loaded with screw-ups - the blunders of an RVer for thirty years who's been described as "a few campsites short of a full park." Skim a page or two as long as you don't model yourself after him. If you do, you'll buy the wrong RV, pay too much, bang it up quickly and often, and make a ton of costly decisions you can't undo - no matter what kind of rig you're talking about from a Class A to a 5th wheel. Newbies especially, don't emulate a wild-man who's filled his book with blunders. Old pro RVers, you'll doubtless recognize a few of his mistakes. Hopefully you haven't made as many as he has. If you have money to waste and nothing better to do, buy this book. But read it with caution or you'll find yourself RVing on the wrong side of the road.

In recent years, the architect Janet Marie Smith has led renovation work at Dodger Stadium. Statues of Jackie Robinson and Koufax stand in the new center-field plaza area.Besides innumerable baseball games, Dodger Stadium has hosted rock concerts, religious events, boxing and soccer matches, and even an ice-hockey game in front of more than 54,000 not-so-chilly fans. Located so close to Hollywood, the park has been a filming location for many movies and TV shows.Forty-nine members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) contributed to this book about one of the game's iconic venues, one that longtime manager Tom Lasorda called "blue heaven on earth."

The Kings of Wrestling
Wrestling dates back to ancient times, but it was not until Edmond Desbonnet (1867-1953) produced his groundbreaking work The Kings of Wrestling in 1910 that its history was set down in book-length form. His work consists of nearly 150 biographies and accompanying photos of the men who pioneered professional wrestling, particularly in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He explains how Greco-Roman wrestling emerged in France around 1845 and then evolved into a big business during its golden age of 1890 to 1910. The sport drew men from all over Europe as well as Africans, Turks, East Indians, Russians, Americans, and others. Wrestling became the first truly international sport the world had ever known. Desbonnet wrote his history in French, and it is translated here for the first time. This richly illustrated edition has an introduction and extensive annotations, along with many contemporary newspaper articles, book excerpts and magazine pieces from French, Italian and German sources.
Texas Market Hunting
In this book, R. K. Sawyer chronicles the days of market hunting along the Texas coast and the showdown between the early game wardens and those who persisted in commercial waterfowl hunting. Containing an abundance of rare historical photographs and oral history, Texas Market Hunting: Stories of Waterfowl, Game Laws, and Outlaws provides a comprehensive and colorful account of this bygone period. From its earliest days of human habitation, the Texas coast was home to seemingly endless clouds of ducks, geese, swans, and shorebirds.By the 1880s Texas huntsmen, or market hunters, as they came to be called, began providing meat and plumage for the restaurant tables and millinery salons of a rapidly growing nation. A network of suppliers, packers, distribution centers, and shipping hubs efficiently handled their immense harvest. At the peak of Texas market hunting in the late 1890s, Rockport merchants shipped an average of 600 ducks a day in a five-month shooting season, and in the last year of legal market hunting, an estimated 60,000 ducks and geese were shipped from Corpus Christi alone.
Don’t Crush the Eggs in Your Armpit
The beauty of Athletics is that it has something to suit virtually everyone and it is an accessible sport in which performances can all be measured and recorded. As Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, said, "The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."Awareness of the efforts of others within an event and those competing for the same team, be it school, club or beyond, can stimulate team spirit and lead to long-term friendships. The seeds for this book were sown many moons ago, when an eager group of Loughborough PE students were riveted to every word of the legendary National Coach Geoff Dyson. Full of well-researched technical expertise, he concluded with a strange but true statement, "You can't have pole vaulters without poles. Now go back to your hinterlands and spread the Gospel!" It is hardly surprising that some of his audience left mildly confused.

A Hundred Years of Texas Waterfowl Hunting
The days are gone when seemingly limitless numbers of canvasbacks, mallards, and Canada geese filled the skies above the Texas coast. Gone too are the days when, in a single morning, hunters often harvested ducks, shorebirds, and other waterfowl by the hundreds. The hundred-year period from the mid-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century brought momentous changes in attitudes and game laws: changes initially prompted by sportsmen who witnessed the disappearance of both the birds and their spectacular habitat. These changes forever affected the state's storied hunting culture. Yet, as R. K. Sawyer discovered, the rich lore and reminiscences of the era's hunters and guides who plied the marshy haunts from Beaumont to Brownsville, though fading, remain a colorful and essential part of the Texas outdoor heritage.Gleaned from interviews with sportsmen and guides of decades past as well as meticulous research in news archives, Sawyer's vivid documentation of Texas' deep-rooted waterfowl hunting tradition is accompanied by a superb collection of historical and modern photographs. By preserving this account of a way of life and a coastal environment that have both mostly vanished, A Hundred Years of Texas Waterfowl Hunting also pays tribute to the efforts of all those who fought to ensure that Texas' waterfowl legacy would endure. This book will aid their efforts in championing the preservation of waterfowl and wetland resources for the benefit of future generations.

Bushido Explained
This seminal work by historian Alexander Bennett presents a broad overview of the Japanese "Way of the Warrior" as it is expressed in scores of classical Japanese texts written by famous Samurai themselves. Bennett's analysis of these writings shows that the essential meaning of Bushido, the Samurai's code of conduct and ethics, evolved significantly over time--from the 12th century when the warrior class was elevated to become an elite group, to the 19th century when the Samurai class was suddenly disbanded. Bushido Explained takes a visual approach to presenting important concepts and terminology, helping readers easily navigate the complex world of the Samurai. The text is written in a highly accessible style, with sidebars presenting interesting concepts, facts and important Samurai figures who were central to Bushido's evolution. The different types of Bushido--which vary by region, time period and Samurai rank--are presented with over 300 informative diagrams and illustrations. No other book offers such a wide-ranging, yet clear analysis of Bushido--debunking myths and misconceptions about who the Samurai truly were. Bushido Explained presents a precise overview of Samurai ideals and culture in a logical, chronological order. Author Alexander Bennett--a professor of Japanese history, martial arts and Budo theory at Kansai university in Japan--uses this information and teaching methods in his Japanese Studies: Introduction to Bushido class. Now, readers all over the world can sit in on the unique lesson.

The Politics of the Olympic Games
Can sports and politics mix? They can and do, according to the author of this study of the Olympic Games. Richard Espy's objective is to show how the organization of the Games reflects the structure of international politics. He focuses on four basic issues concerning the Olympic system during the post-World War II period: German participation; Chinese participation; South African and Rhodesia participation; and the role of sport federations, international organizations, and business interests in the Olympics. Espy discusses the relationship between the Olympic idea of international amity through sport competition and the reality of world affairs, how television has changed governmental views and use of the Olympic Games, and whether sports can be used legitimately as a political tool. He also recommends possible changes in the organizational structure of the event--or even the Olympic ideal itself--to help the Games achieve their intended result: an atmosphere of international good will. My Jeet Kune Do Unlimited Adventure
In 1991, I was asked by Curtis F. Wong - owner of "Inside Kung Fu" magazine - to make a video series on JKD Concepts, which proved very successful. Since I had a writing background, I told Curtis that I was interested in having a column for the magazine. He said that it would be up to the editor of the publication, but he would introduce me.The editor agreed to read what I had written. It was piece on the art of Indonesian Silat. He called a few days later and said, "If you keep writing like this, you'll have a place here for a long time." When the first piece was published, the heading above the title read "Burt Offerings". The magazine editor had come up with that, and I proceeded to write the "Burt Offerings" monthly column for the next decade. Here you have a collection of many of those columns, along with some selected articles from other magazines and two interviews. As I reread each piece that made it into this work, I had a many precious memories flow back into my consciousness along with many flashbacks of pivotal moments in my Martial Arts development. To each of you reading this book, I trust that you will enjoy the stories and I sincerely hope that many of the lessons I learned, often the hard way, will help you to better your own training and life.

Ballplayers are Human, Too
This book is one of the most personal and dramatic baseball stories ever written-a blow-by-blow account of managing the most dynamic team in baseball history. All during the record-breaking 1961 Yankee season Charles Dexter dogged Ralph Houk's footsteps with a tape recorder, taking down in the manager's own words his on-the-spot reactions to the day's game and the current crises. As a result, for the first time a major league manager lifts the curtain on what actually goes on in the clubhouse and on the bench, takes the reader into team meetings, reveals the secret of his tactics, his disciplinary problems, and the techniques of baseball as the Yankees play it. Houk exposes his own psychological reactions in the heat of battle and that of his players, from the moment he succeeded Casey Stengel to the final put-out of the 1961 World Series.BALLPLAYERS ARE HUMAN, TOO begins with Houk's stunned reaction as the Yankees lost the 1960 World Series to the Pittsburgh Pirates, followed by his personal narrative of his sudden elevation to the throne Casey Stengel had occupied for twelve years. He quickly reviews his Kansas background, his childhood, his introduction to baseball, his early minor league days, his rise from a private to a Major on the battlefields of Europe, his return to baseball, his struggles to win a Yankee job, his years with the five-time Yankee champions, and as a tempestuous yet thoughtful minor league manager and as a Yankee coach. Then, as Yankee manager, he tells how he planned and organized the 1961 campaign, including his handling of rookies, trades, spring training, press relations, and relations with umpires-and, from the season's opening, the daily game-by-game problems of keeping a high-spirited, highly paid ball club on its toes. It's all here, Roger Maris' 61 home runs and Mickey Mantle's 54, the skillful employment of the three first-string catchers, the canny trades that brought winning pitchers to a faltering staff, What really happened to Ryne Duren, Whitey Ford's record of 25 victories, Papa Luis Arroyo's miraculous relief pitching, and the tremendous loyalty which made the Yankees' team effort one to be long remembered. All this is told in Ralph Houk's own very special unexpurgated lingo; here's a baseball fans baseball book-rich in drama, humor, and baseball lore.

Dewey
Finalist for the 2024 Casey Award and selected as a 'Best Baseball Book of 2024' by Sports Collector's Digest For twenty Major League seasons, the name Dwight Evans was synonymous with sterling defense and a potent bat. A Red Sox legend, he played in 2,505 games in Boston - second only to Carl Yastrzemski - and hit 379 home runs for the club, trailing only Yastrzemski and Ted Williams. Nobody hit more home runs in the American League and no player had more extra base hits in all of baseball than the man affectionately known as Dewey did during the decade of the 1980s, but it was his rifle-like right arm - and eight Gold Glove Awards - that established him as the best right fielder of his era. In Dewey, Evans and baseball historian Erik Sherman take Red Sox fans back to a glorious time in baseball, filled with unforgettable World Series appearances in 1975 and 1986, legendary teammates including fellow outfield mainstays Jim Rice and Fred Lynn, and some of the most memorable games in MLB history. Yet for all his greatness on the baseball field, the immense challenges that Evans and his family dealt with off it were even more impressive, a journey that Evans poignantly explores in detail like never before. A man who would become known for his class, dignity, and strength, Evans would use those attributes along with his wife Susan to help nurture and comfort two sons, Timothy and Justin, as they battled neurofibromatosis (NF) - commonly known as elephant man's disease - a condition that causes tumors to form in the brain, spinal cord, and nerves. Part charming memoir of an underrated star from bygone era of baseball and part exploration of a man whose inner strength sustained him through the trials and tribulations surrounding the diagnosis, treatment, and deaths of two sons who were tragically afflicted with NF, Dewey is the long-awaited full story of Dewey from the man himself.
