Breaking Serve
A national championship coach. A public arrest. A federal prison sentence. And a fight for redemption. For three decades, Michael Center was one of college tennis's most respected leaders-coaching at Kansas, TCU, and Texas, where he built the Longhorns into a national powerhouse and a rock-solid reputation.Until March 2019, when the FBI stormed his home.Caught in Operation Varsity Blues-the federal investigation into Rick Singer's admissions scheme-Center was shackled and arrested in front of his family. Overnight, he lost his job, his identity, and eventually, his freedom. While the team he built went on to win the University of Texas's first-ever NCAA Tennis Championship, Center watched from the sidelines-unemployed and spiraling. A guilty plea sent him to Three Rivers Federal Prison, just as COVID swept through the country. Alone in a sweltering solitary cell, he made a choice: survive-and rebuild.Breaking Serve is Center's raw, redemptive memoir of losing everything and fighting his way back. He shares what really happened at Texas, his harrowing experience in court and prison, and the deep emotional toll on himself, his friends and family. But this isn't just a scandal story-it's a roadmap for resilience. At the heart of his comeback are the Five Pillars that transformed his life: Empathy, Role Clarity, Purposeful Process, Standards Over Goals, and How to Compete. If you've ever faced life-altering failure, shame, or adversity, Breaking Serve is proof that you can get up-and come back stronger.

Sport Migrants, Precarity and Identity
This book takes a close look at the experiences of migrant athletes, their precarious careers, and at what this can tell us about wider themes of globalisation, identity, race, gender, and the body.Based on in-depth ethnographic research on male Brazilian footballers and futsal players working in Central and Eastern Europe, this book helps to fill gaps in previous research on sports migration and global sports labor markets. This book uses life-history interviews to reveal how race, gender, and class are articulated in the everyday experiences of migrant athletes; how they express their religious affiliations; and how they navigate the relationships with injuries and pain that are characteristic of precarious athletic careers. This book considers the transnational networks that are essential in sustaining international athletic labor flows and the role that borders and emotions play in the lives of sports migrants and also the agency that migrant athletes can have in issues such as player development and retention.Presenting a more nuanced, ground-level perspective on sports migration and the sociological dialogue between identity, culture, and the body, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in the socio-cultural study of sport, migration, globalization, or global inequalities.

Bark Canoes
"This handsomely illustrated work presents a clear and succinct review of the talented, driven, and irascible [Adney]... Recommended." -- Choice The bark canoe was the method of water travel for centuries, by native people in North America. The canoe made possible hunting, trade, and communication between native groups. Edwin Tappan Adney singlehandedly preserved the fading history of Indigenous bark canoe construction in North America. He built 110 historically accurate canoe models, many based on canoes that were the last remaining example of their type. Adney calculated that his canoe models consumed over 20,000 hours of detailed drawing, research and building. Bark Canoes profiles Adney's life and life's work. Born in the United States in 1868, he lived much of his adult life in Canada. His last years were spent almost penniless in a small bungalow in New Brunswick. Canoe research and model building were only one of the passions that drove this extraordinary man. Respected by scholars for his work with canoes, ethnography and Native languages, he struggled against enormous odds to create and preserve his models and papers. Now owned by the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, Virginia, 110 of his beloved canoe models have been photographed and are presented here in splendid color. This book is a great resource for anyone interested in the history of Indigenous people -- and how they lived -- in North America. The Mariners' Museum holds the largest international collection of maritime artifacts in North America, including ship models, paintings and hundreds of thousands of vintage photographs.
NFL Moments
Over its 105-year history, the NFL has built franchise empires, created icons, integrated itself into the fabric of American culture and captivated fans around the globe. At the core of the NFL are the stories of the iconic players and leaders who drove the NFL from a modest association struggling to define itself against the college game to the most exciting and profitable sports league in the world. Through snappy prose and historic photographs, NFL Moments catalogs the league's larger-than-life characters and their defining stories. The book features these and many more moments: the founding of the NFL the stories of the Forgotten Four and the emergence of Black athletes Joe Namath's guarantee Franco Harris and the Immaculate Reception the unrivalled improvisational skills of Patrick Mahomes. From the foreword: Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, the matriarch of a fabled political dynasty, once reflected, "Life isn't a matter of milestones, but of moments." For football fans everywhere, whatever their rooting interest, this sentiment could not be truer. Moments of inspiration. Moments of achievement. Moments of sorrow. Moments of high drama and of low comedy. Moments that survive years, even decades, after they actually occurred. The people, places, innovations and exploits that define a franchise, a league, a sport, and the eras that spawned them.
Bhiwani Junction
'Havana. Harlem. Haryana. There is a thread that runs through these centres of excellence in boxing... They are places where young boys can choose a career in crime if they want to, and they often do. Or, turn to boxing.' Vijender Singh's one bronze medal in Beijing has changed the fortunes of an entire sport in India. At the very least, it dramatically transformed one town: Bhiwani. Or did Bhiwani transform Indian boxing? The nation now knows Bhiwani as being synonymous with the handsome Olympian heartthrob and then some. Boxing is the new sexy, Vijender is the face of it, and Bhiwani is its home. But inspiring as that tale is and considerable though India's successes in the sport have been since his bronze, the story - as is true of everything in India - is more complex. The sport has a long and meandering history, a Raj connection and a nationalist one, and decades of Indian rule and misrule. There have been many boxing centres in the country, beginning with Calcutta and Mumbai. The state of Manipur has had a long, conflicted history with the sport, as has the Indian Army. Blood, sweat, tears and a healthy dose of conspiracy: the story of Indian boxing is dramatic, simultaneously dispiriting and inspiring.

The wait is over. For the world's finest batsman and for a nation of cricket lovers whose hopes and ambitions accompanied Sachin Tendulkar every time he stepped out to bat. On 16 March 2012, at Mirpur in Dhaka, after opening the innings for India, Sachin nudged the ball to behind square leg in the forty-fourth over to cross the final barrier: a hundred centuries in international cricket. In this account of the master batsman's incredible journey, sportswriter V. Krishnaswamy takes us through every hundred, every peak scaled on Sachin's way to the top. With an introduction by former India captain Rahul Dravid and a foreword by Sachin's first and most famous coach Ramakant Achrekar, this is a book for every cricket and Sachin fan.
Out Of The Blue
'When you are Rajasthan, last in the plate division, never having won the title, never even coming close to a final in over three decades, you don' t play to win the honour, you play to save what you can of yours. ' Ending up at the very bottom of the Ranji Trophy 's lower division shook Rajasthan up. The team staked all it had on the season of 2010-11; it became the player's one shot at redemption. This is the inspiring true story of the player's motivation, their passion for cricket, and of a cricket association that changed the rules of how domestic cricketers are groomed in India. Together, they resurrected the Rajasthan team - against all odds. This is the scintillating story of Rajasthan's first Ranji Trophy win, written by the team's highly successful opening batsman himself. If Aakash Chopra's first book laid bare the administrative apathy and corruption that domestic cricket is mired in, this one is a closeup of what it could be.
Enter the Dangal
'When I'm on the mat, I am so filled with this awareness that the slightest touch feels like electricity to my body, and my body reacts to that the same way it would have reacted if I touched a livewire.' Wrestling, kushti, rules the farmlands, as it has for centuries. It had pride of place in the courts of Chalukya kings and Mughal emperors. It was embraced by Hinduism and its epics, and has led its own untroubled revolution against the caste system. The British loved it when they first came to India, then rejected it during the freedom struggle. No, wrestling has never been marginal -- even if it is largely ignored in modern-day narratives of sport and culture. From the Great Gama to Sushil Kumar -- whose two Olympic medals yanked the kushti out of rural obscurity and on to TV screens -- and the many, many pehalwans in between, Enter the Dangal goes behind the scenes to the akharas that quietly defy urbanization. It travels to villages and small towns to meet the intrepid women who fight their way into this 'manly' sport. Beyond the indifferent wrestling associations and an impervious media is an old, old sport.Enter the dangal, and you may never leave.

Bleeding Green
The Hartford Whalers were a beloved hockey team from their founding in 1972 as the New England Whalers. Playing in the National Hockey League's smallest market and arena after the World Hockey Association merger in 1979, they struggled in a division that included both the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens--but their fans were among the NHL's most loyal. In 1995 new owners demanded a new arena and, when it fell through, moved the team to North Carolina, rebranding as the Hurricanes. Unlike fellow franchises that have folded or relocated with little fanfare, the Whalers' fan base stayed with the team, which remains as popular as ever. Even though more than two decades have come and gone since Connecticut's only professional sports team moved, nobody has forgotten the Whalers, their history, and their unique--and still highly profitable--logo. And while the NHL continues to thrive without them, their impact stretches far beyond the ice and into an entirely different cultural arena. Part sports history and part civic history, Bleeding Green shows vividly why the Whalers remain firmly embedded in the American milieu and have had a lasting impact on not only the NHL but the sports landscape as a whole.

Bo Belinsky
This work proves the adage of all that glitters is not gold. David Krell has written the first full-length biography of one of baseball's most notorious figures, using archival newspaper articles to reconstruct the colorful career of Bo Belinsky. Along the way, he dated the most famous actresses in America, including Mamie Van Doren, Connie Stevens, and Tina Louise. What the fans didn't know about was the disastrous effect of Belinsky's alcoholism and drug abuse. Three marriages resulted in divorces. He couldn't get traction in rehab or AA. But in the 1990s, he moved to Las Vegas where he embraced sobriety and worked with one of the city's most successful car dealerships. Included interviews with Belinsky's friends and colleagues show a different side to this controversial player balances rumor with reality and shows that fame has its benefits but also terrific costs.

A Games Changer
From the emergence of the COVID pandemic in early 2020 through the delayed staging of the Tokyo Olympic games in summer 2021, A Games Changer takes the reader behind the scenes to explore the myriad challenges the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Japanese officials faced during the months of uncertainty leading up not only to the postponement of the Games but also to their delayed. Drawing on a thorough review of contemporary newspaper and magazine coverage as well as personal interviews with current and former IOC officials, Stephen R. Wenn and Robert K. Barney examine Japan's rising excitement in 2019 as preparations for the Games accelerated; whispers of a mysterious disease spreading first in China, then worldwide; organizers' initial resolve to press forward with the Games; the tumultuous discussions that ultimately resulted in the joint March 2020 decision by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and IOC President Thomas Bach to postpone the Games; and the numerous negotiations with venues, media, and sponsors required to extend contracts and protect all parties' health. Wenn and Barney reveal how human relationships-among planners, politicians, competitors, and vaccine researchers-were vital to presenting an Olympics where, in July and August 2021, world records were set, deferred dreams were achieved, and fears of a superspreader event went unrealized. While tracing the struggles of multiple athletes who had to pause their Olympic hopes and training as COVID-19 closed the world, Wenn and Barney focus on the journey of Canadian decathlete Damian Warner and his coach, Gar Leyshon. Denied his usual training venues, he prepared for the rescheduled Games with ingenuity, determination, and adaptability, reflective of the resilience demonstrated by Tokyo's Olympians around the globe. The authors' close account of Warner's two days in Tokyo recaptures the excitement and drama of sport that home viewers sorely needed amid pandemic lockdowns and incalculable personal loss.

On Sports
What are sports, really? What do we love about them? And what, in our digital age, have they become? On Sports reads like a conversation between friends at the ballpark in those golden days before the kiss cam and college co-eds with T-shirt cannons spoiled the fun; a book that feels like the sun on your forehead and the breeze in your hair, beer and laughter on your lips; a book that celebrates communion and friendship and the beauty of these games--whether it be baseball or football or soccer or tennis or cricket--that we've designed to distract ourselves from the end of the world. It's about what 7Up tastes like when drunk from the Grey Cup, how much work it takes for talent to shine, and the near impossibility of language to properly capture athletic excellence. It's about the beauty of good sports copy, the ephemerality of even the biggest sports story, and how sport remains perpetually powered by the eleven-year-old in all of us. It's a book about rediscovering the spirit of sport, before online gambling and the manufactured spectacle of today's professional sports suffocates the last of it; and it's about where that spirit today is best found.
