Wheels on Ice
Wheels on Ice reveals Alaska's key role in bicycling both as a mode of travel and as an endurance sport, as well as its special allure for those seeking the proverbial struggle against nature. This collection opens with the first bicycle boom and the advent of the safety bicycle in the late 1800s, at approximately the same time gold was discovered in Alaska and the Yukon Territory. As bicycles evolved, Alaskans were among the first to innovate: the fatbike, for example, evolved from the mountain bike in the late 1980s into a wider-framed bike with fatter tires, making snow biking more accessible and giving birth to the Iditabike race. More recently, ultra-endurance cyclist Lael Wilcox rode all the major roads in the state, totaling more than 4,500 miles of gravel and pavement. Jessica Cherry and Frank Soos's diverse group of stories covers cycling both past and present. From riders commuting in every kind of weather to those seeking long-distance adventure in the most remote sections of the United States, these stories will inspire cyclists to ride into their own stories in Alaska and beyond.
Prophetic Grappling
He ﷺ said, "Go and wrestle him." So, I took him down and thus he ﷺ thus permitted me to join the mission. - Samurah ibn Jundub (Companion of the Messenger of God ﷺ)Sport has been a hallmark of every culture throughout history, and Islamic civilisation was no exception. At the time of the Messenger of God ﷺ, noble arts such as Archery, Swordsmanship, Equitation and Wrestling were the established sports of the day. But how were these sports practised and what purpose did they serve? What emphasis does Islam place on martial arts?Drawing on hadith literature and classical texts, this short work looks at the art of wrestling as practised by early Muslims, including: - A brief history of wrestling in Arabia and amongst the Companions- A translation and commentary on the short treatise by the great 9th century Imam Jalaluddin as-Suyuti's al-Musārʿah ilā al-Muṣārʿah ('Swiftly to Wrestling').- A discussion on the objectives of sports in Islam with excerpts from Silat al-Riyādati bil-Dīn wa-Dawruha ('The Relation Between Exercise and Religion') by the late Shaykh Muhammad ibn Alawi al-Māliki (1944-2004).In a time when sport is heavily commercialised, Prophetic Grappling hopes to inspire a new generation to turn to the noble example of the Messenger of God ﷺ and use traditional martial arts as a means of spiritual, as well as physical, growth.

The Great Story of Georgia Bulldogs Football Ii
This book is written for those of us who love Georgia Bulldogs Football and who cannot wait until our next win. There is no need to be impatient because as of 2022, Georgia is now at the top of the pack and the Bulldogs win big games all the time. Ask the others! In 2022, of course we all know, Georgia became the College Football Champions. The founding of the University was in 1785 and before Georgia eventually played its first football game, the first book was read at UGA right after Abraham Baldwin of the University of Georgia drafted legislation that became the charter of the university. Georgia student life moved quickly as the first student organization was founded as the Demosthenian Literary Society was founded. The first commencement was held with Josiah Miggs, President presiding in 1804. For its first 50 years the school was known as Franklin College. Soon after being established, Charles Herty got football going on campus in the fall of 1886 and UGA played its first intercollegiate football game. It took a while but in 1929, the school built its first stadium Sanford Stadium. The rest of the college football is not necessarily thrilled that Georgia became so good, so fast, and now they are recognized as the best team in the nation. Georgia won its first National Championship in 1942. In 1980, Georgia repeated its national championship with freshman Herschel Walker leading the way. The Bulldogs remained a national powerhouse with a lot of close calls to greatness until 2022 when it again won another National Championship with a coach who was a great Georgia graduate. Go Bulldogs! This book captures the whole great story of Georgia football. It takes the reader through stories about Georgia's great immortal coaches and great players over the years. You will not be able to put this book down.
Sketches of the Equestrian Art - Croquis de Dressage
After decades of training and teaching, I feel more committed than ever to my original belief, inspired by Mestre Nuno Oliveira, in keeping the horse happy and light: "la belle légèreté à la Française." AfterJean-Louis Sauvât is one of those rare individuals who feel the same commitment as myself. We are of the same school and share the same inspiration and I feel very fortunate to have met this wonderful artist. The sketches in this book were all done by Jean-Louis during his visit to my ranch in Healdsburg in California. They are presented, together with my comments, in an order that follows, as closely as possible, the natural training progression. Mestre Nuno Oliveira passed away over three decades ago. Years ago in Portugal, I met with Louis Valencia, one of Oliveira's closest friends, and in our conversation about the need to fully preserve the classical tradition, we realized that Oliveira's influence is even stronger and more relevant today. This book is dedicated to Mestre Nuno Oliveira. It is not only about horses, it is a book about life. The demands of competition and the excessive drive to be a winner, sometimes make people forget the essentials. In this fast-moving world, too many people forget the calm and healing offered by the horse. They forget the magic of the centaur; the unity of man and horse. Fortunately all around the world and especially in California, many are returning to the essentials and are beginning to be more conscious that the well-being of their horse is as important as their own. What we call the New Age is a raised consciousness of the fact that we share the same world and that we must take an active part in building a better one. Without any doubt whatsoever, the horse will be an integral part of this better world. And if we treat him with love and respect, he will help and heal us. Horses teach us how to ask without aggression, how to love without condition, and how to avoid the destructive side of perfection. They teach us to sublimate oneself through sharing, giving, and healing. They teach us to cherish every single moment for its novelty and wonder and to remain true to the best traditions of the past. I hope this book will inspire and commit riders to establish between themselves and their horses a truly communicative relationship.

Antonio Somera
Antonio "Tony" Somera was a lifelong resident of Stockton, California. In 1980 he became a member in good standing of the "Legionarios Del Trabajo General Luna" lodge. He was sponsored by his father, Celestino Somera and Grandmaster Leo Giron. Guro Tony Somera was a life member of the lodge and was transferred to become a member of the "Daguhoy" lodge. He also was a life member of FALNHS and on the board of trustees for the "Little Manila Foundation" since 2002. The "Filipino American National Historical Society" (FANHS) is truly a community-based organization whose mission is to preserve, document, and present Filipino American history and to support scholarly research and artistic works which reflect that rich past. Along with Tony Somera's community service, he was also a leader in the martial arts community. He was a 3rd degree black belt in Goju Ryu Karate gained in 1974. He was also the highest ranking student and vice president in Mande Muda Silat. However, he was most well known for being Grand Master Tony Somera of the "Bahala Na(R) Martial Arts", "Giron(R) Arnis Escrima". As a direct result of superior skill and devotion to the principles, philosophy and purpose of "Bahala Na Martial Arts" combined with leadership and his master level Instructorship, Master Tony Somera was promoted to the rank and responsibility of Grand Master by the late Grand Master Emeritus and founder of "Bahala Na(R) Martial Arts" Leo M. Giron. Grand Master Somera promoted the art of "Giron(R) Arnis Escrima" along with its rich Filipino History and culture by providing opportunities for students and community members to visit historic sites and learn Filipino American history through bi-annual "affiliate camps" held in Stockton. Tony Somera was the only person ever to be promoted to the rank of Master and then Grand Master by the late Grand Master Emeritus Leo M. Giron.

The Art and Science of Staff Fighting
NINE LEVELS, EASY TO EXPERT This book stands apart from other staff training manuals. While most titles focus on forms and twirling, The Art and Science of Staff Fighting emphasizes the dynamics of combat. The author draws on thirty years of martial experience, presenting the best of both Eastern and Western traditions. Joe Varady lays out a comprehensive course of study in nine levels, from beginner to expert. He guides readers through such fundamentals as stances, striking, blocking, and footwork. In advanced lessons, readers learn disarming techniques, groundwork, and facing multiple opponents. But this book is not just for staff enthusiasts. Even those unfamiliar with martial arts can adapt these techniques, increasing their skill and confidence in defending themselves. "Our environment is usually full of improvised weapons," Varady writes. "Staff fighting techniques can be effectively applied in a self-defense situation using a walking stick, coatrack, curtain rod, floor lamp, hockey stick, fallen tree branch, broom, mop, shovel, or rake." Equipped with this knowledge, readers will begin to realize that, in one way or another, they are nearly always armed and capable of defending themselves. This book features: Nine levels of instruction, progressing from easy to expert Over 600 photos with motion arrows A "nondenominational" approach to staff, utilizing the best of Eastern and Western arts A comprehensive, methodical approach to building staff skills If you are already a student of the staff, these lessons will not conflict with your katas or current style. Masters Martial Arts Writings
There have been many changes in the world of martial arts but some things are still the same. A well-written column is one of them: precise, short and to the point in a few hundred words. Like a perfect punch or kick aimed to the target. The real responsibility as the world leaders in the publication of martial arts book is to inform and educate the reader, promoting all the styles and approaches without being limited by any of them. The credit of this compilation work goes straight to the masters who wrote these great columns. I just compiled them and edited for content. Magazines go away but hopefully this work will stay and future generation will be able of benefit from the wisdom and knowledge of the masters featured here. Most of what is passed as human wisdom is merely the post-examination gabble of excited individuals trying to guess how the new lessons will explain the old questions of life and martial arts training. Anything is fresh on the first hearing ... even though others may have heard it a thousand times through a score of generations. Enjoy the reading and walk on!

Women's Football in Latin America
The chapters in the Women's Football in Latin America two volumes will look at the social and historical means of the embodied representation of gender differences that has been deeply embedded in the history of Latin American women and football. The authors identify and analyse how, in a range of ways, Latin American women have found in-between spaces, amid severe macho structures, to establish and play their football. As a result, the book will be of interest to researchers and students of sport sociology, football studies, gender studies, comparative sports studies, sports history, and Latin American sporting culture. The second volume of this edited collection integrates a range of high-quality studies on women's football across Latin American countries to a global readership. From studies with marginalized communities, football fans but also the media and professional women's footballers, the chapters show how f繳tbol has been a key part of oppressive gender structures, and ways that women have fought for gender equity within this key cultural expression in Latin America. The book also suggests a fascinating research and activist agenda for women's football in the continent for the next decades.

Australia has the highest anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction rate in the world. HOW does this happen? WHY does this happen? In a book that aims to raise more questions than it answers, Sports & Exercise Physiotherapist Jess Cunningham shines a unique lens on ACL injuries and their management by sharing the insightful and inspiring stories of 13 Australian athletes and their journeys through injury, rehabilitation, and return to sport. Reflecting on their unique experiences, each athlete provides valuable insights and advice so that anyone working through their own ACL injury can learn from their successes-as well as their mistakes-and be motivated to complete their rehabilitation successfully so as to return to the sport or active life they love and avoid re-rupture.The book aims to act as a conversation starter opening up the necessary dialogue between patients, surgeons, and therapists to ensure the best decisions are made with regard to patient-specific ACL treatment, as well as increasing awareness around evidence-based training programs that have been proven to significantly reduce the risk of ACL injuries (and re-ruptures) from occurring in the first place. The common phrase from the athletes interviewed for this book tells its story: "I wish something like this had existed when I was going through it all."Now it does.10% of all proceeds donated to Sporting Chance Foundation - helping aspiring Indigenous Australian athletes realise their full potential following sports injury.
Sport for Sustainable Development
This book looks at the potential of sport to contribute to wide-ranging development outcomes, which have been recognized across international policy declarations, most significantly in the 2030 UN Agenda for Sustainable Development. It provides a theoretical approach to sport and development. It begins by addressing the basic concepts of sport development and sustainability and then discusses the potential contribution of sport to five prioritized SDGs (SDGs 3, 4, 5, 8 and 16) and the environment as one of the sustainable development pillars that may contribute to SDGs 6, 7, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15. This academic resource provides a macro view to students and researchers of sports sciences to know more about the fundamental concepts of sustainable development goals, and to enhance their knowledge about sport as a conduit that can help achieve wider development outcomes rather than being an end in itself. This book is of interest to students and researchers of sports studies, from sociology to management, and researchers and policy makers interested in sport and sustainable development.

More Than a Race
More Than a Race is about the notorious Race Across America (the RAAM) known as the world's toughest bicycle race. The story tracks a four-man team of septuagenarians who proved that age is no obstacle to superlative performance. Adding to the narrative are the voices of families and crew members, whose perspectives on the racers and crew dynamics enrich the account. Leaving Oceanside CA on June 12, 2012, the team and their hard-working support crew of 15 raced to Annapolis MD in 6 days, 13 hours, 13 minutes, at an average of 19.04 mph. They not only broke the 70+ record by 27 hours, but also bested the 60+ record by more than 3 hours. Sponsored by UnitedHealthcare, the team overcame more than its share of obstacles, including 100-degree desert heat, a hospitalization, fierce Kansas winds, a bike dropped at high speed onto a highway in Illinois, and the final agony of the Appalachian Mountains. More Than a Race is a must-read for all cyclists and armchair adventurers alike.

Acceptance and Commitment Approaches for Athletes' Wellbeing and Performance
Elite sport can be an unforgiving and harsh environment. This book explores psychological predictors of wellbeing and performance excellence in elite level athletes, and presents an innovative approach for optimizing mental wellbeing and sporting performance. Jointly developed by performance psychologists, clinical psychologists and sport scientists the Flexible Mind approach draws on contemporary psychological theory and research to help athletes build 'psychological flexibility' - the ability to experience challenging thoughts and emotions and still be true to one's values. A range of case studies relating to different sports are used to demonstrate how three core components - Being Present, Being Open and Doing What Matters - can improve athletes' performance and wellbeing. This book will be a game-changing resource for sports psychologists, mental health practitioners, coaches and support staff who are committed to helping athletes to excel and stay well.

Management of the Cricketing Ecosystem
This book is a culmination of sustained research work on the evaluation of cricket and its management to imbibe a balance between its various formats by using data and analytics. The book has identified three primary stakeholders--administrators, players and spectators--each having their own ambitions. In order for convergence of these ambitions, it has prescribed the networked governance in place of hierarchic governance for the International Cricket Council (ICC), the cricket's apex body. This book aims at creating a balance between formats that each country should play. There is as much dearth of academic research on this topic, as there is abundance of individual viewpoints from professionals related to the game. Hence at the outset, the book has created a action points and has underlined the lack of convergence with present way of governance. This book has created a meta-metric framework for formative assessment of influence across cricket formats. In order to assess the influence of T20 on test matches and on India's performance, a comparison between pre-IPL period (1998-2007) and post-IPL period (2008-2017) by using this framework has been done.
