Buttocks of Steel
This is a true story about a middle aged man who, quite unexpectedly, found himself taking on a running challenge for which he was pitifully ill-equipped. It follows the drama of his feeble first efforts with friends, through the shared failures and successes, and describes the many strange occurrences and laughs encountered along the way. He shares what he's learned about running, and imparts some life wisdom developed from many long, lonely, hours on the road, as the art and craft of long distance running gradually draws in its willing victim.A must-read for every distance runner, whether new-comer or seasoned, or indeed anyone who faces challenges in life and would welcome just a little help with their own journey.
Spectator
This book is for both runners and Spectators alike. In this book, you'll find the Do's and Don'ts and How-to-Do's of road race Spectating, from a 5K to Ultra Marathon to a 140.6 full distance Triathlons (like Ironman) and beyond. Running is tough! Runners don't need Spectators putting any bad stuff or confusion on them, especially when running a race! We'll talk about location, preparation, nutrition, signage, road closures, the night before, photography and everything else. This book will make your day as a competitive Spectator almost as rewarding as completing the race you're out there supporting. Almost. The following is a download of what I learned running 122 half and full marathons and participating as a Spectator in just as many.
It's a long road
What's the relation between Tokyo and cod fish with garlic potato mash? How can we combine New York and endorphins? What is in common between a marathon and a burger? How can a running podcast be linked to six metropolitan cities? You will find answers to these questions and many more in the book "It's a long road" by George Savvidis. In an arresting and effortless storytelling, he shares his experiences, his personal battles, and the "marathons" he has accomplished so far in his running journey. This journey has not been a smooth one, and for this exact reason fellow runners can relate. It brings forward the magic, but also the difficulties of running at its true dimensions. In the book "It's a long road", the writer, who is also the producer of the homonymous podcast, is describing in every detail the great moments, but also all the troubles, stress and misfortunes that he experienced from starting to run, till the point he achieved his dream to become a Six Star Finisher, that is to complete the six largest marathons globally.Having accomplished unique running experiences, he is rightfully able to urge us: "Don't be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and never stop dreaming!"
Up and Running in 30 Days
I'm guessing that you picked up this book because you are curious about becoming a runner. You've probably seen different types of 'Runner' out and about: in the gym, slogging away on the treadmill for hours at a time (how? - is a valid question); or on the streets pounding out the miles. You may even have wondered past an athletic track and seen people running in circles at various speeds from the gentle jog to lung-busters! If you have been really fortunate, you have watched from the side lines of a race. You have wondered, "Could I do that?", "Could I become a person who runs for fun/fitness/goals?" and "Am I a runner?"

Running The Endless Race
Running the Endless Race is a story of mental anguish, survival & what it means to find something runderful in a pair of poorly fitting pinkish magenta running shoes.]After surviving a suicide attempt at only 15 years old, it took years before Ally realized that while quitting is always an option, it wasn't the right one for her. In this, her first book, Ally shares the intimate, uncomfortable, and at times hilarious truth about what it means to struggle with depression and darkness, survive a nearly fatal suicide attempt, and make the decision to create something runderful, something powerful, something worth living for in a life she'd initially wanted nothing more than to end, all while training for (and dominating) Spartan races, marathons, coaching other runners to achieve their own PR's, running a successful business, and raising 2 children of her own.]Featured in the groundbreaking film, Moving America's Soul on Suicide, Ally Robinson is speaking out about what it means to not simply find, but create, a purpose in life and make the often-difficult choice to keep moving forward because unlike marathons, in life, there is no finish line.
50 Great Irish Athletes
In 1924, the first team representing the newly established Irish Free State travelled to Paris to take part in the 8th Olympic Games of the modern era. At previous Olympic Games and at British and American championships, Irish athletes had distinguished themselves, winning titles, setting world records and helping create the sport of athletics as we know it but in the colours of other countries. This book celebrates the achievements of 50 carefully chosen Irish athletics greats from the late nineteenth century to the present day. These range chronologically from the Davin brothers to Ireland's greatest Paralympic the sprinter Jason Smyth who retired as recently as 2023. Among the many Olympic gold medal winners whose stories are told are pioneers John Flanagan and Martin Sheridan; Pat O'Callaghan and Bob Tisdall from the first third of the twentieth century, Ronnie Delany, our first track medal winner from 1956, Mary Peters from 1972 and the more recent stars like Eamonn Coghlan, John Treacy and Sonia O'Sullivan. Sprinters, hurdlers, multi-eventers, race walkers, jumpers and throwers as well as middle and long distance runners, from all 32 counties of Ireland and a variety of backgrounds, are included.Whittling down the list of great Irish athletes came after hours of discussion between the late Colm Murphy, the vastly knowledgeable athletics historian who came up with the idea of this book, and the six contributing writers. Some hard decisions had to be taken - and of course you may find that your favourite Irish athlete is not included in the book. On a more positive note, you may well discover a few new favourites - even some you had never heard of previously!

Don’t Crush the Eggs in Your Armpit
The beauty of Athletics is that it has something to suit virtually everyone and it is an accessible sport in which performances can all be measured and recorded. As Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, said, "The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."Awareness of the efforts of others within an event and those competing for the same team, be it school, club or beyond, can stimulate team spirit and lead to long-term friendships. The seeds for this book were sown many moons ago, when an eager group of Loughborough PE students were riveted to every word of the legendary National Coach Geoff Dyson. Full of well-researched technical expertise, he concluded with a strange but true statement, "You can't have pole vaulters without poles. Now go back to your hinterlands and spread the Gospel!" It is hardly surprising that some of his audience left mildly confused.

Endurance
Running 7 Marathons on 7 Continents in 7 Days was a life-shaping physical and spiritual adventure that has forever changed me. From running in the blistering cold winds of Antarctica to the sun bathed beaches of Dubai, God used these seven days to teach me the importance of endurance and how it impacts every facet of my life. I struggled, bled, and fought alongside 55 others as we ran the globe on icy runways, along beautiful cobblestone streets and moonlit beaches. Throughout the journey I was strengthened and encouraged as God led me into deeper faith in him and love for others. Running the world in the course of a week allowed me to see the beauty of his creation while enjoying a sport that has changed my life. I have been married to Natalie since 2003 and we have two beautiful daughters, Kenlee and Annie. We live in Waxahachie, Texas where I work as a Financial Advisor and where I have been running and training with a wonderful group of friends since 2010. I have completed over 60 marathons or ultra-marathons with plenty more to come. I also serve as the race director for the Hachie 50 Ultra Marathon. My family attends The Avenue Church and we co-founded a local non-profit, Walk In Love, where we aim to meet the practical needs of those living within 10 minutes of our door.
The Race Against Time
'In The Race Against Time, Askwith touches upon something larger than simply running or sport - he helps us to see ourselves ... Both inspiring and moving' - Adharanand Finn, author of Running with the Kenyans A quest for the secrets of happy, healthy whole-life running, and how runners can keep enjoying their sport, whatever their age What do you do when the sport that has been your lifeline to physical and mental well-being starts to slip away from you? Richard Askwith, a life-long running enthusiast, was sunk in mid-life despair. Plagued by injuries and demoralised by failing strength and speed, he was on the point of giving up for good. Then he came across the remarkable world of late-life athletics, and resolved to find out more. The result is a thrilling, life-affirming quest for the secrets of the happy few who keep on running all through life's later decades, culminating in a life-changing adventure at the World Masters Athletics Championships. It's a resounding message of hope for any runner who has felt their joy in their sport being undermined by age. Colourful, informative and inspiring, The Race Against Time is a story of cold science and heart-warming resilience; of champions and also-rans; of sprinting centenarians and forty-something super-athletes barely touched by age. Its heroes are experts and enthusiasts - scientists, coaches, runners - from many countries, each with a different story to tell. What unites them is a single belief: that you don't have to take growing old lying down. This is a book for anyone who has ever felt the healing power of running. It is both a very personal account of one man's journey from despair to hope, and an exhilarating guide, explaining how timely adjustments to lifestyle and training can slow the progress of physiological decay, while sheer human spirit can, if you are lucky, keep you running happily and healthily, all the way into extreme old age.

From Zero to Ironman Triathlon
Approaching middle-age, putting on weight and brand new to the sport of triathlon, I went from a short sprint triathlon to Ironman in four months. With three sports; gear selection, nutrition and training plans are key to your success and in my case required detailed research and consultation. What I found was that much of the material available already assumed a certain level of knowledge or capability, or was just too broad to be of practical use. This book is about practical leanings, tips and advice for beginners or those new to the sport of triathlon and helping set them up for success. This book tells the story of my journey including such things as the look of disbelief and responses from family, friends and work colleagues when they heard I was going to do an Ironman, saying things like "You know you have to be fit to do that?" and "I really don't think its a good idea, why would you put your body through that" through to getting the wetsuit shop to actually sell him a wetsuit, not believing he was capable of swimming in the first place, let alone doing an Ironman, along with all the tips, recommendations and advice he gained along the way. When you decide to take on an Ironman, the financial and time investment is significant so you really don't want to slip up due to mechanical or bio-mechanical failure. Fortune definitely favors the prepared when it comes to doing an Ironman. Read this book to understand why the Ironman triathlon is a heart rate day, understand the arguments for electronic gears on a tribike, find out how many grams of carbs you need per hour and where best to find them, race prep on the day and how best to set up your training plan and monitor it. I have tried to share all the things I believe helped make this journey from zero to Ironman in 4 months possible. The Ironman is an extreme athletic event including a 3,8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run. You will move 226km in a single day and are unlikely to be able to do this in any training session prior. If you prepare properly both mentally and physically, anything is possible. This book is about hopefully getting you set up in the best possible way and helping you make Ironman a pleasure to participate in, as well as a success.

This revised and updated edition celebrates the 10th anniversary of the Believe community coming together to set goals, do the work, learn what works and what doesn't, keep their heads in the game, overcome obstacles, identify blindspots, be kind to themselves, and enjoy the whole process. The Believe Training Journal has it all: designated grids for recording workout information as well as space to process and plan. The journal offers a full year of undated weeks, an annual calendar, worksheets, quizzes, tips and tools, and plenty of room to record your training journey. The twelve essays accompanying each month have been revised to reflect new wisdom and research, and are jampacked with lessons and insights on training, racing, recovery, mindset and more. Lauren and Ro and well over 100,000 users to date know there's incredible power in the handwritten logging and reflection process that you won't get online. Use this training tool to learn more from your runs, to dig deeper, to stay healthier, and to find more meaning in the journey. In the end you'll be a wiser athlete and have a keepsake and reference for years to come.
The Healing Power of Running
In her book, The Healing Power of Running, Jennifer Bonn describes how running saved her mentally, physically and spiritually, and she has put together stories of other runners as a testament to how running heals. Jennifer also wants readers to realize how accessible running is, and that everyone can adjust it to fit different goals and needs. Running can make you feel powerful, peaceful and hopeful, and the running community makes everyone feel accepted. The book also includes instructions on how to start a healing journey through running."The Healing Power of Running is a book of realistic and actual events that can occur in anyone's life at any given point. It explains ways that running has helped others strive and be successful in healing, whether it is physically or mentally. I found myself laughing, crying and thinking, "Hmm... I need to do this!" It's empow竅ering and makes you want to RUN like there is no tomorrow. The best part is it makes you want to create a bond with strangers, who become family. Read the book, and you, too, will want to heal by running." -- Kim Turner, Aircraft mechanic III-gen-mods"Jennifer Bonn writes an extremely helpful, energetic and therapeutic book on the challenges and rewards of running. The stories and examples, shared by the runners - with perfect notes about their journeys - will help both beginners and seasoned runners; Bonn's own running experiences alone are worth the read. She finds easy ways to explain how running can become addictive and life-changing. I'll become a healthier person, and possibly a better runner, just by reading it. The tips, guidance and instructions are what most of us could use in life, and it can be applied anywhere." -- Hal Cottingham, Director of operations, Global Technology Services
