Running, Thinking, Writing
For the creative fulfillment of writers who identify as runners, walkers, or movers, Running, Thinking, Writing: Embodied Cognition in Composition unveils the varied understandings of the relationship between writing activity and physical activity. Jackie Hoermann-Elliott provides an interdisciplinary overview of relevant research from the fields of composition studies, cognitive science, neuroscience, and sports psychology before proposing a new theoretical framework for explaining what happens to writers when they are moved to develop their writing while their bodies are in motion. She shares illuminating accounts from runner-writers working in the industries of journalism, academia, and youth literature. She also provides pedagogical insights from working with student writers on embodied writing assignments as well as introductory activities for instructors to try in their own classrooms. With a running metaphor guiding the chapters in this book, readers will be challenged to view writing as embodied cognition and to realize the benefits of embodiment for all writers.Jackie Hoermann-Elliott is an Assistant Professor of English and the Director of the First-Year Composition Program at Texas Woman's University. Her scholarship has been published in national journals, such as Composition Forum, and regional ones, such as Texas's Conference of College Teachers of English Studies.
The Rise of the Ultra Runners
An electrifying look inside the wild world of extreme distance running. Once the reserve of only the most hardcore enthusiasts, ultra running is now a thriving global industry, with hundreds of thousands of competitors each year. But is the rise of this most brutal and challenging sport--with races that extend into hundreds of miles, often in extreme environments--an antidote to modern life, or a symptom of a modern illness? In The Rise of the Ultra Runners, award-winning author Adharanand Finn travels to the heart of the sport to investigate the reasons behind its rise and discover what it takes to join the ranks of these ultra athletes. Through encounters with the extreme and colorful characters of the ultramarathon world, and his own experiences of running ultras everywhere from the deserts of Oman to the Rocky Mountains, Finn offers a fascinating account of people testing the boundaries of human endeavor.
Mat to Pavement
Many runners have heard that yoga is a great form of cross training. But exactly why is yoga so beneficial to runners? How does yoga make runners stronger and more resilient?Mat to Pavement is a deep dive into the ways that yoga helps runners both on and off the pavement. Runners will learn how they can apply lessons from yoga to their running so they can resist getting injured, hit new personal records, and feel less overwhelmed, too.
The Elements of Effort
All runners, from beginners to Olympians, will delight in this luminous compendium of wisdom wrought from many years of running. Applying his clear vision and wry wit to a smorgasbord of running-related topics, including stretching, dancing, bugs, falling, spaghetti, sweat, and the food police, John Jerome shares his contagious passion for the most basic of sports. Stripping the art of running down to its barest elements, he takes readers and runners with him on a joyous journey -- a run that revels in a profound affection and respect for the single sport that is as pure and simple as it is infinitely complex.
The Unfinished Race
The Unfinished Race - Redefining the Recovery Process details Kylene Cochrane's struggles with physical injury as a competitive athlete, and the "mental injury" she suffered as a result. Her positive and bubbly personality shine through in this vivid retelling of her time as a collegiate runner told from a female athlete's perspective. This book sheds light on runners and the need to shift the focus of the running world toward seeing the "holistic athlete" - a viewpoint that considers the mental and physical health of athletes. With a holistic identity, there is a stronger focus on starting the race, rather than finishing it. This touching memoir holds many life lessons and tools for athletes of any gender who have faced injury and spent time on the bench instead of the field. The Unfinished Race is for anyone who needs hope while injured or strategies for finding new ways to connect with themselves while dealing with a sports injury.
What Are You Waiting For?
I was sitting in my hotel room after a nine-hour overnight flight clearing my emails before a busy week in Tokyo. An email from a friend popped up "Would you like to run a marathon in October?" he wrote. I replied "Of course". Questions then raced through my head like, "What is a marathon? and "How do I train for one?". This simple invitation led my wife and I into the wonderful world of running, of bloody shins, broken bones, blistered feet, puddles of sweat, pools of vomit, hyperthermia, and altitude sickness but in some of the world's most legendary places like the penguin shores of Antarctica, the Great Wall, the Valley of the Queens along the Nile in Egypt, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet at the Southern Cape of South Africa, up in the Rocky Mountains, and to the summit of Kilimanjaro that make the world of hurt disappear and the wonders of the world even more breathtaking and awe-inspiring.Along the way are live bands, free beer, salted potatoes, Mars bars, kisses from girls, a bagpipe serenade, television interviews, a magazine cover, and free rides and high-fives from strangers. All this against the backdrop of everyday life of raising four kids, earning degrees, changing jobs, moving countries, a house robbery at knife-point, a near death experience in Hawaii, a dead body in Cape Town and a horrific cancer scare. Somehow, along the way, my wife and I get faster with age, go on to earn entry into the Seven Continents Club, run 30 and 24 marathons respectively along with ultras and triathlons. If someone wants to change their life, all they have to do is put on a pair of running shoes, step outside and go for a run.

The Science and Practice of Middle and Long Distance Running
The popularity of distance running as a sport, and a recreational activity, is at an all-time high. Motivated by the desire to achieve a personal best, remain healthy, or simply complete an event, distance runners of all ages and abilities actively seek out advice from experienced coaches and sport scientists. This is also reflected in the growth of programmes of education for young coaches and aspiring sport scientists in recent years. There are a multitude of different approaches to training distance runners; however, the basic principles and ingredients required for success are applicable to any distance runner. The science that underpins the training and physical preparation of distance runners has developed considerably in recent years. The most experienced and successful coaches in the distance running community rarely have the opportunity to share their tried and tested methods of training. Similarly, the novel work of sport scientists is often only accessible to elite runners, their support teams and academia. The Science and Practice of Middle and Long Distance Running links together the science and coaching artistry associated with preparing distance runners for events ranging from 800 m up to ultra-marathon distances. It combines the latest scientific evidence, published by world-leading sport scientists, with the sound training principles and strategies adopted by experienced coaches. The book translates cutting-edge scientific research from the fields of physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition into practical suggestions for achieving success. Important topical issues and contemporary practices related to health and performance are also addressed. This book is an essential addition to the library of any distance runner, coach or sport scientist.
Running Stories
CAN I RUN? ME? Yes, yes, and yes! You can. This book is filled with stories of people struggling with self-doubt who put one foot forward and have never looked back. Your age, shape and speed don't matter. Just take the first step and the rest will follow. In these 88 short stories, people of widely differing backgrounds describe why, where, and how they run. From the beginner to the elite athlete, from the parent at home to the refugee, each story is uniquely personal. But they all share one thing in common - the enormously positive effect running has on their lives. Every story is accompanied by a photograph of the writer. These stories will inspire you, make you laugh and make you cry. Roger Sawtell proved it is never too late to start. "I am 93 and for 92 of those years I did not show any interest in running."Jerry Carey rebuilt her life through running. "I was isolated, gaslighted, manipulated, psychologically conditioned and controlled 24/7. I wasn't allowed access to my phone, friends, or family."Jacquie Millet and Camilla Langlands have broken extra-ordinary records. "We have earned a Guinness World Record for the most marathons run together by a parent and child."The stories are organised into six broad themes: * IT MAKES ME FEEL SO GOOD - Stories of wellbeing and joy.* RUNNING JOURNEYS - Personal running histories, from getting going to achieving a goal.* RACING TALES - From parkrun to ultra-marathon, these are all about races.* RUNNING GOT ME THROUGH - Extra-ordinary, powerful accounts of overcoming adversity.* THE COMPETITIVE SPIRIT- Winning medals or achieving records motivate this group.* IT'S ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE TOO - Making new friends, finding love, raising funds for charity, guiding a blind runner, coaching and more all show that running is far from a solitary experience. The section 'Questions new runners ask' answers 10 things new runners - or those thinking about running - often wonder about. It covers: CAN I RUN? ME? DOES IT MATTER WHAT I WEAR? DO I NEED TO STRETCH AND WARM UP BEFORE I RUN? HOW FAST, FAR AND OFTEN SHOULD I RUN? DO I NEED TO EAT OR DRINK? WILL I LOSE WEIGHT? HOW CAN I FIND OTHER PEOPLE TO RUN WITH? AM I TOO OLD TO RUN? WILL I FEEL PAIN? SHOULD I SET A GOAL? The authors are delighted to donate 100% of their revenue from sales of this book to The Running Charity who use running to improve the lives of homeless young people in the UK. This small but essential organisation saves and transforms lives - you can read about some of them in the book.

Run Anyway
In 2012, Lance Svendsen, a 27 year old youth pastor, finds himself on an amazing running journey. Originally motivated by the death of his uncle, it begins when the NYC Marathon is cancelled and a group of friends decide they are going to finish what they had trained to do. They complete the marathon without water stations, medals, fanfare, or even a designated course. Lance's journey continues when he is entered into the Boston Marathon just a few months later, which ended with him witnessing the terrorist bombing at the finish line. What follows is a 50 mile ultra-marathon, and then a most rewarding trip into the mountains of Guatemala, where Lance finds himself carrying out sick children from a place where there was only one way to reach them - on foot. Run Anyway tells the refreshingly funny and inspirational story of a group of friends who knew they had to finish what they started.
Winged Messenger
The year is 1976, and South Africa is gripped by a terrible lockdown - apartheid. Nelson Mandela is in prison on Robben Island; South Africa is isolated from the rest of the world, and revolution is in the air.Against this background, a young student at Johannesburg's Wits University decides to try and take control of his life, and his destiny, and give himself a sense of purpose. He challenges himself to run South Africa's most famous long-distance race, the grueling 90-kilometre Comrades Marathon.Little does he know that five years later he will win this most iconic of races and he will go on to be considered one of the greatest Comrades runners in the history of the race.In Winged Messenger, Bruce shares this 1976/77 training diary so that raw novices and experienced runners alike can follow the journey he took to his first Comrades. Novices particularly will enjoy reading about how he took his first stumbling, rudimentary steps and how, as an ordinary runner, he began to understand the demands of the race. He documents his mistakes, his successes and his progress towards his date with destiny in May 1977. Using his own experiences, he guides others, but particularly novices, on their quests to become winged messengers. This is a unique blend of both a training guide and a fascinating glimpse of the life of a young man in his quest to conquer both himself and South Africa's greatest race.

The Science of Speed The Art of the Sprint
Speed matters in almost every competitive sport. If you want to run your fastest, you must run with the correct technique. The scientific principles of physics and kinesiology - the engineering of the human body - must be used as the foundation for human motion. Dr. Arellano explains the science in a way that's understandable and practical. Then, for the very first time in book form, Hall of Fame Track and Field Coach Tom Tellez applies the science so anyone can coach, learn and correctly execute what it takes to produce maximum speed. Coach Tellez has developed some of the fastest athletes in history, including Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell, Joe DeLoach, Kirk Baptiste, Mike Marsh, Carol Lewis, Michelle Finn Burrell and Jackie Washington. In this book, you will learn: -The laws of human motion and the science of correct running technique-How correct technique optimizes application of force on the ground and generates speed-The very specific elements to study and train for sprints and distance running-How to identify and correct problems-A consistent vocabulary to use in teaching what to do and why-How to change motor patterns for consistent results-For coaches, the best cues to give your athletes for success The information in this book is applicable for all athletes, regardless of age or gender and can be applied to ANY SPORT that requires speed. While not every athlete will be fast, every athlete can get faster. Stay grounded in the principles, focus on every detail, and strive for consistent, correct execution.
A Runner Reminisces
"A Runner Reminisces" by Andrew Sherwood is a collection of essays on his years of running around the world, from a first disastrous attempt at cross-country in his Scottish boarding school to winning US national championships in late middle age. Along the way he is followed by inquisitive monkeys in Malaysia, attacked by vicious magpies in Australia, runs with an armed escort beside the River Nile in Egypt, narrowly escapes a fate worse than death in Tunisia, takes part in an Olympic Games Marathon Trial, races up a precipitous Welsh mountain, breaks a world record with his team from Atlanta and shakes hands with Sir Roger Bannister.
Marathon in 2
Running a marathon in 2:58 hrs. is a great experience. That means without suffering and pain, even if it is strenuous of course. What we didn't accomplish over training is impossible to compensate during the marathon. That is why a well structured training is the key to success. I apply my 3 month training program for about 20 years now with great results. What makes it special is that it is easy to adapt, flexible and gentle to body and mind. A healthy approach. My marathon program is written for a run right under 3:00 hrs., but it can be adapted to slower or faster times. It is meant for runners that have their personal limit round that time or want to break that 3:00 hrs. wall for the first time. Here you find also many good tips out of my own experience about nutrition, clothes, running style, injuries, breathing, choice of marathon, equipment, competition preparation and much more. What is missing as well in most books is the psychological part. How do I structure my training that it becomes bearable? How can I make myself go out and run at lousy rainy days? What should I focus on during the marathon run? I wrote this little book to share my experiences and to make it possible for more runners to run with joy and success. I am no professional writer or coach, but a German/Finnish photographer (50+) living in Sweden and an enthusiastic marathon runner (for 29 years). Update 2014: Tallinn marathon in 2:59:58. With A Little Dash Of Crazy
Running 63 marathons in 63 days in the year that you turn 50 seemed a little crazy to most, but maybe a 'little dash of crazy' was what it was going to take. This inspirational story tells the tale of how turning 50 years of age became the catalyst for Nikki Love, an occasional marathon fun-runner, to reunite with her ambitious, give-it-a-go self of younger years by embarking on an extraordinary running adventure. With a plan to run 63 marathons in 63 iconic locations throughout the UK, Nikki soon learns that plans don't always go to plan. Instead, being adaptable, remaining committed to the big picture and relying more on her mental toughness, as well as a 'little dash of crazy', rather than conventional marathon running skills and techniques would be the key to her success. Nikki shares the highs, the lows, the raw emotion, the sheer hard work and commitment needed as well as her vulnerable side as she tells the story of the places she visits, the people she meets, the many obstacles she overcomes and the lessons she learns as she runs a marathon a day for 63 days through the scenic landscape of Scotland, England and Wales.
Hard Wired
Fresh out of school and emerging as one of Australia's future distance running stars, Emma Carney discovered the sport of triathlon. The sport was never the same again. With an unmatched record, she devastated the international circuit. Defined by a relentless pursuit of sporting excellence, Emma was known to detest losing more than she loved to win. At home in the cutthroat world of professional sport, Emma didn't expect a welcoming party waiting for her when she reached the pinnacle of triathlon. A fiercely independent athlete, fitting in and conforming was never her style. Rules annoyed her. Authority irritated her. And that complicated things... Emma's is a life publicly defined by winning. But like sport, nothing is predictable. Success is fickle, life is fragile.Emma's story reveals that international sporting success is about much more than winning. Courage is a constant. Hard work and dedication are vital, as are unwavering passion, belief, and desire. But there is more. Emma's story also raises questions: who is truly there when things go wrong, when the system fails? Who cares when you find yourself dying on the roadside, saving yourself only to then lose your sister, identity, self-belief and hope in everything you once believed in...?
Triathlon and Transformation
Female students today never knew a time without Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which protects students from sex-based discrimination and exclusion in education programs or activities. It benefits all women, especially female athletes. This dual memoir recounts the lives of Celeste Callahan and Dottie Dorion, who were athletes before Title IX was passed. Callahan and Dorion were runners and triathletes who constantly battled gender norms and stereotypes. The memoirs of the two athletes' oral and written accounts are stitched together to detail their journey through sport against societal standards and pressures.
Running
When running emerged as a common pastime in the 1970s, no one suspected it would grow to become one of the world's most celebrated and practiced sports. Least of all Susan, a middle-aged woman who grew up in an era when running was something you only did while trying to escape the law. But little did she know, times were changing-for sports, for women, and for her.
State of Mind
Chris Thrall set out to run an ultramarathon a day from John O'Groats to Land's End, solo, unsupported and sleeping in a tent by the side of the road. He'd not trained for two years, having been disabled whilst awaiting major spinal surgery. His backpack alone for the 999-mile slog Weighed over fifteen kilograms. Most said Chris couldn't do it. The former commando promised he would. Because to a Royal Marine success is simply a State of Mind ...
Saving Myself One Step at a Time
For decades, T. J. Bryan devoted herself to her profession, rising upward constantly. Suddenly, after reaching the pinnacle of her career, she was pushed from her lofty position. To save herself from despair, she, at age 64, impulsively decided to become a distance runner. Up to this point, her only athletic success revolved around aerobics classes when she was in her 40s and early 50s. When she became a runner, she competed in races of varying distances and developed a love of marathons although, as an African-American woman, she encountered few women of her age and even fewer women of her race competing at this distance. In ten years of running and racing, she discovered much about herself and joined a family that supported and encouraged her. Occasionally gritty and at times magical, her story is inspirational.

This interesting volume deals with the history, development, and training of athletics, making it highly recommended for athletes, trainers, and others with an interest in the subject. The Pants Of Perspective
"When I ran, I ran for pleasure. I didn't run for times, to win, to impress: I ran for me. When I ran my bum cheeks rubbed together, so much so that if I was going on a long run I'd have to 'lube up'. I maintained that I was not a 'real' runner - I just liked to run so that I could eat cake."Anna was never anything like those 'real' runners on telly - all spindly limbs, tiny shorts and split times - but when she read about New Zealand's 3,000-kilometre-long Te Araroa Trail, she began to wonder... perhaps being a 'real' runner was overrated.Maybe she could just run it anyway?Travelling alone through New Zealand's backcountry for 148 days, she scrambled through forests, along ridge-lines, over mountain passes, along beaches and across swollen rivers. Running up to 52 kilometres in a day, she slept wild most nights, and was taken into the homes and hearts of the kiwi people in between. The Pants of Perspective is a witty, colourful and at times painfully raw account of a journey to the edge of what a woman believes herself to be capable of. It is a coming-of-age story which will lead you on a roller coaster ride through fear, vulnerability courage and failure. For anyone who has ever dreamt of taking on a great challenge, but felt too afraid to begin - this story is for you.
Crawl of Fame
In 1982, Julie Moss ran the Ironman triathlon for her college senior research project. Her idea was quirky, even crazy; only a handful of hardcore, highly trained enthusiasts competed in the little-known, 140.6-mile combination of swimming, cycling, and running. Julie brought no experience or appreciable training beyond running two marathons. She did bring a latent willpower that, the world soon found out, wouldn't be denied. What happened next changed Ironman forever . . .After becoming the unlikely leader during the marathon, the final leg of the Ironman, Julie fell and lost all bodily function fifteen meters (50 feet) from the finish. While on hands and knees, she watched her rival pass her. Thirty seconds later, she crawled across the line-stunning the millions who were watching on television. At age twenty-three, Julie became the instant global icon, and the public face of fitness and endurance sports - which exploded in popularity, partly because of her inspiration. That this young co-ed would represent such a new sport was unlikely. That she would inspire millions to change the courses of their lives in the three decades years since was unthinkable. Yet, it happened. And keeps happening. In April 2017 Julie won her age group in the Ironman North American Championships-racing 25 minutes faster than her 1982 Ironman. How does a 58-year-old woman beat the time of her 23-year-old self? Which begs the question, could she also beat her 1982 time in the more demanding Kona? That's the goal, and the world will find out in October 2018. Crawl of Fame is the long-awaited release of her incredible story. Julie describes how she found her greater purpose while lying across the finish line at Ironman 1982 - and how that greater purpose as a woman, athlete, endurance sports symbol and, now, iconic figure has defined her life and inspired others since.Several endurance sports athletes have written memoirs, but none have changed a sport so dramatically as Julie Moss. Now, readers will join the inner and outer journey of one of the world's most impressive athletes, a woman who has already inspired millions - with millions more to come.
The Science of the Marathon and the Art of Variable Pace Running
The Science of the Marathon and the Art of Variable Pace Running encourages you to rediscover running by gradually slowing down, running at your own pace, and learning to accelerate. This book is about Veronique Billat's 30 years of research, life studies, and practical experience. This research takes place in real life and extreme racing situations; it does not take place on treadmills, rather in marathon races and the high mountains. It's about adapting new technologies to the needs of training and understanding the possibilities for the improvement of human energy. The key to long term success without injury or overtraining is to train with quality and not quantity. It is no longer necessary to train by running long distances in preparation for specific types of running races. Performance is not just about a result, but rather a road to true happiness. We invite you to discover this new way of running as it is a realistic minimalist-based training using your running mind-body feelings sensations and your lifestyle. The practice of marathon running is, above all, a serious endeavor for anyone 10 to 100 years old, that will let you dream immense possibilities.ReviewsI thought I knew everything I needed to know about marathon pacing before I read The Science of the Marathon. Whether your goal is to complete a marathon with a smile on your face or set a new personal best. Dr. Billat and Edwards fascinating and persuasive book will help you prepare with greater purpose and race with more confidence.--Matt Fitzgerald, author of 80/20 Running, Brain Training For Runners, Life is a Marathon, and many others. This amazing book covering 30 years of exercise science and human experience from Dr. Billat is designed for the coach, scientist, or running enthusiast who desires to understand the physiology and variability of individual banners. I learned some new and interesting things and the book reaffirms that doing accelerations and varying the pace spontaneously on runs is a good thing. I have never used GPS-watch and run by feel, so it is nice to hear that is not crazy. It's refreshing to read about optimizing fat metabolism as this is the evolutionary fuel of the human. At age 53, this book keeps me honest to do my strength training and sprints every day.Dr. Mark Cucuzzella, Professor of Family Medicine, West Virginia University School of Medicine, author of "Run For Your Life" 2008Drs Billat and Edwards have put together a book that combines the best of sports science and in the field research. It's refreshing to see a book on running that connects the dots, delves deep into the science, but still bases its recommendations on how we should run as nature intended.Barry Murray M.Sci, Faculty at Munster Technological University, CEO of Optimum Nutrition For Sport, Irish National endurance runner Veronique Billat is one of the most innovative and important researchers currently active in determining the science of optimum training. I have found her work to be useful for boosting the performances of runners not only in the marathon, but all the way down to the 800-any distance at which aerobic capability matters. My runners swear by it. Richard A. Lovett, Coach, Team Red Lizard, Portland Oregon and Co-author of Alberto Salazar's Guide to Road Racing"Drs. Billat and Edwards did an excellent job writing this book. Dr. Edwards has been a huge help getting Brenda back to top running form. You don't have to be an elite runner to train like one. Brenda has benefited from the 30-30 workouts described in the book. I would recommend this amazing book to anyone looking to take their fitness to the next level."Carlos Handler, Coach, Brenda Martinez USA Olympic Track & Field Runner

Running for the Average Joe
In the winter of 2001, Bill Watts stepped on the scale at nearly 200 pounds, and had difficulty walking up the four flights of stairs at his job. Plagued with stress, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, he set his sights for better health and living. Bill began running races from 5k's on the road, to ultramarathon trail races. Trying to fill the void of running books for "average" runners, he authored "Running for the Average Joe," a book that can help anyone achieve health and fitness at any age. Find out how you can take that first step and enjoy a lifetime of healthy living!Foreword by extreme endurance athlete Marshall Ulrich. Here's what Marshall has to say about the book: Having been a runner for over 37 years, I thought I knew a lot about running. But Bill has taken every aspect of running, physiologically and mentally, then dissected it, examined it, and related it to us in a useful way. He helped me to understand terminology that scientists and nutritionists use, that frankly, didn't make sense until Bill explained the how and why. The depth and breadth of the research is astounding - although I should have known to expect nothing less, knowing Bill's intelligence, focus, and attention to detail. This book is by far the best researched and most comprehensive yet written, by a very talented man who has the ability to explain complex topics in simple and always understandable language. Average Joe is masterfully written, with personal stories from his own experience that will take you step by step through your own transformation. Packed with tips and suggestions, motivational quotes, mantras and challenges, this book will help you along through running and in life. You'll learn so much from this book, which I call the 'A to Z Runner's Bible.' A labor of love fueled by years of running and research, Bill thoroughly addresses running in history, mind, body, and soul. You'll find out how to take that initial first step (the most difficult) and how to maintain a style of living that we all deserve. You'll learn what equipment you need, how to build strength and conditioning through running and cross-training, how to handle injuries, and what to eat. Knowing that what you really need is lifestyle change, this book will take you on a journey with an emphasis on improving mental and physical health by setting and achieving your goals... and how to go beyond. When Bill contacted me recently, asking me to write the foreword to his book, I thought back to our conversation at the marathon expo and remembered, 'I could learn stuff from this guy.' Little did I know how much I could learn! Running for the Average Joe is absolutely the most comprehensive running book - no, the most comprehensive book on how to make a lifestyle change - that I have ever read (and I've read more than a few!). I invite and encourage you to delve into this book. But be careful, as you will get more than you bargained for. While it is a handbook chock full of information about running that you will want to reference well into the future, Running for the Average Joe is really a book that can teach you how to enjoy a better life.Marshall Ulrich - May 2016

Run To Save Your Life
"I don't even want to drive that far." It's the most common retort when you tell people you run 100 miles (or more) for fun. And yet... the authors of the poems and short stories in "Run To Save Your Life" not only run that far, but they do it again... and again... and again. Sometimes further than 100 miles. Sometimes for days. And they find peace. And magic. And joy. And love. In this compelling compilation of short works by runners, "Run To Save Your Life" offers the reader a glimpse into what some view as salvation... or at least a very good time. So put on your running shoes. Maybe they've been in the closet for a while... dust them off and come on a journey. You might just save your own life.
My Coworkers Think I’m A Pro
Brock Gibbs' funny autobiographical account of his quest for a podium finish in an Ironman 70.3 World Championships is anything but a how-to guide on becoming a champion. Gibbs hilariously, and touchingly, weaves together stories of his own madman pursuits as he pushes himself to his limits: physically, mentally, and emotionally. In a funny, self-deprecating way, the author describes what goes through his mind as he transforms from neophyte Ironman competitor to a seasoned 10th place finisher at the World Championship level. Gibbs captures the raw beauty of a man who is desperate to understand the tricks, traditions, and training secrets of triathlon. Audiences will laugh with the author, who is a stranger in a strange land, as he is confronted with the ritualistic behaviour of triathlon transition zones and the primordial call of the pre-race bathroom visit. Through the comical retellings of his experiences preparing for and competing in the swim, bike, and run elements of this gruelling endurance sport, Gibbs recounts his struggle to be the best in spite of his own personal suffering. The author is a natural storyteller who uses humour to captivate his audience as he describes the brutally punishing road to becoming a World Champion in his age group, but just when his dream is within reach, Gibbs discovers a basic human truth that risks derailing it all. All triathletes, from novice age-groupers to seasoned professionals, will be able to relate to the situations Gibbs comically recounts and will repeatedly find themselves saying, "Yeah, I've done that".
