Urban Marathons
This original social science text approaches marathon running as an everyday practice and a designed event, to draw upon and contribute to the literature on practice theory, urban events, rhythmanalysis and mobility. It bridges sport studies and discussions within sociology and geography about practice, movement and the city. Inspired by theoretical debates about embodied and multi-sensuous mobilities, social and material practices, and urban rhythms, this book explores the characteristics of marathon running as a bodily practice on the one hand and, on the other, marathon training grounds and events as unique places. This account takes marathon running seriously, using sociological and geographical theory to understand the practice in and of itself. Based on original empirical research and accessible to readers, taking them to training sessions in Copenhagen and to marathons in Tokyo, Kyoto, Berlin, Frankfurt, Valencia and Copenhagen, it draws out the globalised, codified and generic nature of marathon practices and design, yet also brings out the significant local differences. The book examines in ethnographic detail how marathon practices and places are produced by various materialities, cultural scripts, experts, runners and spectators, and practiced in embodied, multi-sensuous and 'emplaced' ways by ordinary runners. It develops a sociological practice approach to marathon running and geographical understanding of marathon places and rhythms. It demonstrates that marathon running is of broad interest because it calls for and allows lively and expressive ways of conducting and writing research and understanding the becoming of bodies, the intertwining of biological and mechanical rhythms, and the eventful potential of streets. It will appeal to postgraduate students and scholars in sport studies, geography and sociology interested in running, active mobility and ethnography, as well as tourism and urban events. The book will also appeal to general readers with an interest in marathon running.
1972
Since its start in 1972, Nike has employed nearly half a million people. Only four have outlasted Steve Bence. In "1972," Nike's Program Director in Footwear Sourcing and Manufacturing - and an All-American runner at Oregon in the 1970s - shares about his coach, Bill Bowerman; his friend, Steve Prefontaine; his running career at the UO; and his 40-plus year at Nike. Regarding the latter, Bence offers the seldom told manufacturing story from Nike's early years. Combined, he has created a book that belongs on every running enthusiast's shelf.Phil Knight, Nike cofounder: "Steve Bence, a nationally ranked 800-meter runner and 40-plus year teammate of mine at Nike, brings a unique perspective on the Nike story. I enjoyed his book and think you will, too."

Ulster Coastal Run
Few experiences in life are as inspiring as the freedom of hitting the open road. I discovered this at a young age when I received my first pair of running shoes. I went as far and as fast as my legs could carry me and did it all over again the next day. Eventually I got to the point where I wanted to keep going, to keep venturing past the comforts of familiar scenery and explore the wider world at my fingertips. It was a decision that would open a realm of possibilities I never envisioned. Ulster Coastal Run: A Running and Sometimes Walking Adventure, was born from the impossible combination of restlessness and my love of running. Long have I desired to cover every beach, peninsula, coastal nook and cranny comprising almost 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) of the province. It has been a journey of three years, at times stretching my limits to their breaking point. It began on a cold February day in Omeath in 2017. Together with a pair of accomplished runners, we would set forth on the grand adventure of a lifetime. Our quest was one of honour, for we were running to raise money for Clifton Special School in Bangor Co. Down where my son Brian studies. I was also inspired and so proud that Brian joined me on a few of the walking stages. Ulster Coastal Run describes spectacular beaches, friendly villagers, Atlantic storms, a quick sprint through a prison, seeing the 'Garden of Eden' (that's just outside Carrickfergus!) and crossing 'one man's pass' over the cliffs of Slieve League in Donegal. It is a story of love and inspiration. One that has yet to end as I set my sights on the rest of Ireland.
Champions Are Everywhere
The Philosophy, Psychology and Physiology of the Lydiard Training System combine to form the most proven and successful endurance training approach in the world.Since New Zealander Arthur Lydiard's local club athletes won two gold medals and one bronze in the 1960 Rome Olympics, there have been numerous validations of the general approach at Olympic and World Championship levels for endurance athletes of all types, from many different countries.Keith Livingstone is a retired chiropractor, former elite distance runner, and an athletics coach. He has been fascinated by the physiology of the Lydiard system for over 30 years.Keith grew up in the same suburb of Auckland where Arthur Lydiard lived and trained, and was mentored for 5 years by Barry Magee, 1960 Rome Olympics marathon bronze medalist, 1961 World Cup 10000m champion, and one of Arthur Lydiard's first pupils. Barry is still coaching athletes at 87 years of age, using exactly the same training methodology that he learned from the Great Coach. This simple book explains the core physiology concepts that Arthur Lydiard discovered, pioneered, and applied to great effect over 6 decades ago, long before the concepts were explained by modern science.

The Bach Road to Boston
In the spring of 2002, teacher and author Bill Mares sang Bach's St. Matthew Passion and ran the Boston Marathon in a period of 27 hours. The two events were culminations, as it were, of his life-long hobbies of singing and running. In the beginning they seemed so different, Bach and Boston. But then like Escher's tessellations, they began to merge. For Mares, neither endeavor was competitive. The cellist' Yo-Yo-Ma's remark on music applied equally to my running: "The reason for playing music is not to compare yourself with anyone, but to bring forth what is inside you." The book is a long rumination of contrasting emotions- his religious faith tied up in the music vs. the guilt running's self-indulgence. It includes his singing history, including a college music tour of the Far East, and his score of marathons over a score of years. His musical and running buddies are legion. In his duel three months's trainings, the reader shares his preparations, obstacles and ultimate performances, and is inspired to consider the intertwined significance of religion, music, athleticism, teaching and friendship.

Moving Mountains
I arrived in my mid-fifties, clinically obese, riddled with arthritis and often having to walk with a stick.I had an epiphany, threw away my stick and resolved to change my life for ever. I started walking every day. The walking turned to running and after two years I had lost a third of my body weight and was fitter than I had been since my twenties. I started running all over Europe and pushed myself harder and harder. In 2015 I ran eight self-supported marathons in eight countries in eight days driving myself between each one - a world's first. As I approached my sixtieth birthday, I wanted to mark it in a really spectacular way. I decided to emulate the world's greatest trail runner, Kilian Jornet, and run across Spain from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. The journey would take me 525 miles across the Pyrenees climbing a total of more than 125,000 feet - the equivalent of four 'Everests'. This is my story.
The Runner’s Foot Guide
Do you want to increase your chances of running injury free? How about figuring out which strike pattern is best for you? Are some running shoes better than others for helping to prevent injuries and improve performance? As a runner, the risk of injury is high. In fact statistics suggest that up to 50% of runners will suffer an injury in the next 12 months. Given this high level of risk, it is important to identify ways to reduce your chance of injury. But doing so can be confusing because there is so much misinformation to lead you in the wrong direction and increase your injury risk - and waste your hard earned cash. The confusion is particularly evident when it comes to the role of feet and running shoes. In THE RUNNER'S FOOT GUIDE Aleks Baruksopulo provides clarity on these topics and steers you through the many contentious issues by answering questions faced daily by Podiatrists. This book is a must read for avid runners and includes five tips to help you on your quest for enjoyable, injury free running. ABOUT THE AUTHOR - Podiatrist Aleks Baruksopulo has been working in the field of sports medicine since 2007 and is passionate about running and promoting exercise. His passion stems from his own sporting experiences - not all positive having had to deal with heartbreaking injuries himself. In the past, he has been a running shoe store owner and is an accredited running coach, who is in a unique position to help guide you through the often-confusing world of feet and running shoes.

An electrifying look inside the wild world of extreme distance running. Once the reserve of only the most hardcore enthusiasts, ultra running is now a thriving global industry, with hundreds of thousands of competitors each year. In The Rise of the Ultra Runners, award-winning author Adharanand Finn travels to the heart of the sport to investigate the reasons behind its rise and discover what it takes to join the ranks of these ultra athletes. The Unfinished Race
The Unfinished Race - Redefining the Recovery Process details Kylene Cochrane's struggles with physical injury as a competitive athlete, and the "mental injury" she suffered as a result. Her positive and bubbly personality shine through in this vivid retelling of her time as a collegiate runner told from a female athlete's perspective. This book sheds light on runners and the need to shift the focus of the running world toward seeing the "holistic athlete" - a viewpoint that considers the mental and physical health of athletes. With a holistic identity, there is a stronger focus on starting the race, rather than finishing it. This touching memoir holds many life lessons and tools for athletes of any gender who have faced injury and spent time on the bench instead of the field. The Unfinished Race is for anyone who needs hope while injured or strategies for finding new ways to connect with themselves while dealing with a sports injury.
What Are You Waiting For?
I was sitting in my hotel room after a nine-hour overnight flight clearing my emails before a busy week in Tokyo. An email from a friend popped up "Would you like to run a marathon in October?" he wrote. I replied "Of course". Questions then raced through my head like, "What is a marathon? and "How do I train for one?". This simple invitation led my wife and I into the wonderful world of running, of bloody shins, broken bones, blistered feet, puddles of sweat, pools of vomit, hyperthermia, and altitude sickness but in some of the world's most legendary places like the penguin shores of Antarctica, the Great Wall, the Valley of the Queens along the Nile in Egypt, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet at the Southern Cape of South Africa, up in the Rocky Mountains, and to the summit of Kilimanjaro that make the world of hurt disappear and the wonders of the world even more breathtaking and awe-inspiring.Along the way are live bands, free beer, salted potatoes, Mars bars, kisses from girls, a bagpipe serenade, television interviews, a magazine cover, and free rides and high-fives from strangers. All this against the backdrop of everyday life of raising four kids, earning degrees, changing jobs, moving countries, a house robbery at knife-point, a near death experience in Hawaii, a dead body in Cape Town and a horrific cancer scare. Somehow, along the way, my wife and I get faster with age, go on to earn entry into the Seven Continents Club, run 30 and 24 marathons respectively along with ultras and triathlons. If someone wants to change their life, all they have to do is put on a pair of running shoes, step outside and go for a run.

The Science and Practice of Middle and Long Distance Running
The popularity of distance running as a sport, and a recreational activity, is at an all-time high. Motivated by the desire to achieve a personal best, remain healthy, or simply complete an event, distance runners of all ages and abilities actively seek out advice from experienced coaches and sport scientists. This is also reflected in the growth of programmes of education for young coaches and aspiring sport scientists in recent years. There are a multitude of different approaches to training distance runners; however, the basic principles and ingredients required for success are applicable to any distance runner. The science that underpins the training and physical preparation of distance runners has developed considerably in recent years. The most experienced and successful coaches in the distance running community rarely have the opportunity to share their tried and tested methods of training. Similarly, the novel work of sport scientists is often only accessible to elite runners, their support teams and academia. The Science and Practice of Middle and Long Distance Running links together the science and coaching artistry associated with preparing distance runners for events ranging from 800 m up to ultra-marathon distances. It combines the latest scientific evidence, published by world-leading sport scientists, with the sound training principles and strategies adopted by experienced coaches. The book translates cutting-edge scientific research from the fields of physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition into practical suggestions for achieving success. Important topical issues and contemporary practices related to health and performance are also addressed. This book is an essential addition to the library of any distance runner, coach or sport scientist.
Running Stories
CAN I RUN? ME? Yes, yes, and yes! You can. This book is filled with stories of people struggling with self-doubt who put one foot forward and have never looked back. Your age, shape and speed don't matter. Just take the first step and the rest will follow. In these 88 short stories, people of widely differing backgrounds describe why, where, and how they run. From the beginner to the elite athlete, from the parent at home to the refugee, each story is uniquely personal. But they all share one thing in common - the enormously positive effect running has on their lives. Every story is accompanied by a photograph of the writer. These stories will inspire you, make you laugh and make you cry. Roger Sawtell proved it is never too late to start. "I am 93 and for 92 of those years I did not show any interest in running."Jerry Carey rebuilt her life through running. "I was isolated, gaslighted, manipulated, psychologically conditioned and controlled 24/7. I wasn't allowed access to my phone, friends, or family."Jacquie Millet and Camilla Langlands have broken extra-ordinary records. "We have earned a Guinness World Record for the most marathons run together by a parent and child."The stories are organised into six broad themes: * IT MAKES ME FEEL SO GOOD - Stories of wellbeing and joy.* RUNNING JOURNEYS - Personal running histories, from getting going to achieving a goal.* RACING TALES - From parkrun to ultra-marathon, these are all about races.* RUNNING GOT ME THROUGH - Extra-ordinary, powerful accounts of overcoming adversity.* THE COMPETITIVE SPIRIT- Winning medals or achieving records motivate this group.* IT'S ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE TOO - Making new friends, finding love, raising funds for charity, guiding a blind runner, coaching and more all show that running is far from a solitary experience. The section 'Questions new runners ask' answers 10 things new runners - or those thinking about running - often wonder about. It covers: CAN I RUN? ME? DOES IT MATTER WHAT I WEAR? DO I NEED TO STRETCH AND WARM UP BEFORE I RUN? HOW FAST, FAR AND OFTEN SHOULD I RUN? DO I NEED TO EAT OR DRINK? WILL I LOSE WEIGHT? HOW CAN I FIND OTHER PEOPLE TO RUN WITH? AM I TOO OLD TO RUN? WILL I FEEL PAIN? SHOULD I SET A GOAL? The authors are delighted to donate 100% of their revenue from sales of this book to The Running Charity who use running to improve the lives of homeless young people in the UK. Brilliantly interweaving his amazing running journey with the challenges in his professional and personal life, Bretz leaves behind the reasonable and logical to find the magic. His book will inspire the magic in you too.
I Hate Running and You Can Too
BRENDAN LEONARD HATES RUNNING. He hates it so much that he once logged fifty-two marathon-length runs in fifty-two weeks. Now he's sharing everything he's learned about the sport so that you can hate it too. Packed with wisdom, humor, attitude, tips, and quotes--and more than sixty illuminating charts--I Hate Running and You Can Too delivers a powerful message of motivation from a truly relatable mentor. Leonard nails the love-hate relationship most runners have with the sport. He knows the difficulty of getting off the couch, teaches us to get comfortable with being uncomfortable, embraces the mix of running with walking. And he shares all that he's learned--celebrating the mantra of "Easy, light, smooth, and fast," observing that any body that runs is a runner's body. Plus Leonard knows all the practical stuff, from training methods to advice for when you hit a setback or get injured. Even the answer to that big question a lot of runners occasionally ask: Why? Easy: Running helps us understand commitment, develop patience, discover self-discipline, find mental toughness, and prove to ourselves that we can do something demanding. And, of course, burn off that extra serving of nachos.
Run Anyway
In 2012, Lance Svendsen, a 27 year old youth pastor, finds himself on an amazing running journey. Originally motivated by the death of his uncle, it begins when the NYC Marathon is cancelled and a group of friends decide they are going to finish what they had trained to do. They complete the marathon without water stations, medals, fanfare, or even a designated course. Lance's journey continues when he is entered into the Boston Marathon just a few months later, which ended with him witnessing the terrorist bombing at the finish line. What follows is a 50 mile ultra-marathon, and then a most rewarding trip into the mountains of Guatemala, where Lance finds himself carrying out sick children from a place where there was only one way to reach them - on foot. Run Anyway tells the refreshingly funny and inspirational story of a group of friends who knew they had to finish what they started.
Winged Messenger
The year is 1976, and South Africa is gripped by a terrible lockdown - apartheid. Nelson Mandela is in prison on Robben Island; South Africa is isolated from the rest of the world, and revolution is in the air.Against this background, a young student at Johannesburg's Wits University decides to try and take control of his life, and his destiny, and give himself a sense of purpose. He challenges himself to run South Africa's most famous long-distance race, the grueling 90-kilometre Comrades Marathon.Little does he know that five years later he will win this most iconic of races and he will go on to be considered one of the greatest Comrades runners in the history of the race.In Winged Messenger, Bruce shares this 1976/77 training diary so that raw novices and experienced runners alike can follow the journey he took to his first Comrades. Novices particularly will enjoy reading about how he took his first stumbling, rudimentary steps and how, as an ordinary runner, he began to understand the demands of the race. He documents his mistakes, his successes and his progress towards his date with destiny in May 1977. Using his own experiences, he guides others, but particularly novices, on their quests to become winged messengers. This is a unique blend of both a training guide and a fascinating glimpse of the life of a young man in his quest to conquer both himself and South Africa's greatest race.

The Science of Speed The Art of the Sprint
Speed matters in almost every competitive sport. If you want to run your fastest, you must run with the correct technique. The scientific principles of physics and kinesiology - the engineering of the human body - must be used as the foundation for human motion. Dr. Arellano explains the science in a way that's understandable and practical. Then, for the very first time in book form, Hall of Fame Track and Field Coach Tom Tellez applies the science so anyone can coach, learn and correctly execute what it takes to produce maximum speed. Coach Tellez has developed some of the fastest athletes in history, including Carl Lewis, Leroy Burrell, Joe DeLoach, Kirk Baptiste, Mike Marsh, Carol Lewis, Michelle Finn Burrell and Jackie Washington. In this book, you will learn: -The laws of human motion and the science of correct running technique-How correct technique optimizes application of force on the ground and generates speed-The very specific elements to study and train for sprints and distance running-How to identify and correct problems-A consistent vocabulary to use in teaching what to do and why-How to change motor patterns for consistent results-For coaches, the best cues to give your athletes for success The information in this book is applicable for all athletes, regardless of age or gender and can be applied to ANY SPORT that requires speed. While not every athlete will be fast, every athlete can get faster. Stay grounded in the principles, focus on every detail, and strive for consistent, correct execution.
A Runner Reminisces
"A Runner Reminisces" by Andrew Sherwood is a collection of essays on his years of running around the world, from a first disastrous attempt at cross-country in his Scottish boarding school to winning US national championships in late middle age. Along the way he is followed by inquisitive monkeys in Malaysia, attacked by vicious magpies in Australia, runs with an armed escort beside the River Nile in Egypt, narrowly escapes a fate worse than death in Tunisia, takes part in an Olympic Games Marathon Trial, races up a precipitous Welsh mountain, breaks a world record with his team from Atlanta and shakes hands with Sir Roger Bannister.
Marathon in 2
Running a marathon in 2:58 hrs. is a great experience. That means without suffering and pain, even if it is strenuous of course. What we didn't accomplish over training is impossible to compensate during the marathon. That is why a well structured training is the key to success. I apply my 3 month training program for about 20 years now with great results. What makes it special is that it is easy to adapt, flexible and gentle to body and mind. A healthy approach. My marathon program is written for a run right under 3:00 hrs., but it can be adapted to slower or faster times. It is meant for runners that have their personal limit round that time or want to break that 3:00 hrs. wall for the first time. Here you find also many good tips out of my own experience about nutrition, clothes, running style, injuries, breathing, choice of marathon, equipment, competition preparation and much more. What is missing as well in most books is the psychological part. How do I structure my training that it becomes bearable? How can I make myself go out and run at lousy rainy days? What should I focus on during the marathon run? I wrote this little book to share my experiences and to make it possible for more runners to run with joy and success. I am no professional writer or coach, but a German/Finnish photographer (50+) living in Sweden and an enthusiastic marathon runner (for 29 years). Update 2014: Tallinn marathon in 2:59:58. With A Little Dash Of Crazy
Running 63 marathons in 63 days in the year that you turn 50 seemed a little crazy to most, but maybe a 'little dash of crazy' was what it was going to take. This inspirational story tells the tale of how turning 50 years of age became the catalyst for Nikki Love, an occasional marathon fun-runner, to reunite with her ambitious, give-it-a-go self of younger years by embarking on an extraordinary running adventure. With a plan to run 63 marathons in 63 iconic locations throughout the UK, Nikki soon learns that plans don't always go to plan. Instead, being adaptable, remaining committed to the big picture and relying more on her mental toughness, as well as a 'little dash of crazy', rather than conventional marathon running skills and techniques would be the key to her success. Nikki shares the highs, the lows, the raw emotion, the sheer hard work and commitment needed as well as her vulnerable side as she tells the story of the places she visits, the people she meets, the many obstacles she overcomes and the lessons she learns as she runs a marathon a day for 63 days through the scenic landscape of Scotland, England and Wales.
