This is the story of John Hurd, a boy who was so small that he was denied entry to the first grade in his local school because they doubted his mother and his birth certificate. He had to ride a bus to the outlying county school to be accepted for his first year.In high school he missed out on athletics, because of his diminutive size. In ROTC class, his uniform pants had an 8 inch hem and his belt covered half of the shirt pockets. By graduation he had reached the height of 5 feet 6 1/2 inches and weighed 124 pounds.At the age of 60 he learned about the National Senior Games Association, also known as Senior Olympics, and they had five year age brackets for Olympic types of athletic competitions for men and women ages 55 and up. They later began accepting members beginning at age 50.So John began a self-directed program of training in the streets, and at 61 began a "hobby" of running up and down the oval track as a sprinter. As he gradually progressed he continued training year-round and had some fairly decent successes and awards.In 2015 John had a book published about his life in general and experiences in the world of track and field titled "Johnny Run Lately."One of the reasons John has continued, well after his retirement in 2000 from the business and academic world, is the people who frequently tell him they were encouraged to get off the couch and become more involved in taking care of the body they were issued.It is hoped that the reader of this book will also be so encouraged to find an activity that you enjoy, and give it a go. This is not a book dealing with all the technical bio- mechanical movements of the sprint, but a training routine that you can adapt to your needs, and some tips about things to be aware of, and avoid, along the way. This account takes marathon running seriously, using sociological and geographical theory to understand the practice in and of itself. Based on original empirical research and accessible to readers, taking them to training sessions in Copenhagen and to marathons in Tokyo, Kyoto, Berlin, Frankfurt, Valencia and Copenhagen, it draws out the globalised, codified and generic nature of marathon practices and design, yet also brings out the significant local differences. The book examines in ethnographic detail how marathon practices and places are produced by various materialities, cultural scripts, experts, runners and spectators, and practiced in embodied, multi-sensuous and 'emplaced' ways by ordinary runners. It develops a sociological practice approach to marathon running and geographical understanding of marathon places and rhythms. Few experiences in life are as inspiring as the freedom of hitting the open road. I discovered this at a young age when I received my first pair of running shoes. I went as far and as fast as my legs could carry me and did it all over again the next day. It was a decision that would open a realm of possibilities I never envisioned. Ulster Coastal Run: A Running and Sometimes Walking Adventure, was born from the impossible combination of restlessness and my love of running. Long have I desired to cover every beach, peninsula, coastal nook and cranny comprising almost 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) of the province. It has been a journey of three years, at times stretching my limits to their breaking point.It began on a cold February day in Omeath in 2017. Together with a pair of accomplished runners, we would set forth on the grand adventure of a lifetime. Our quest was one of honour, for we were running to raise money for Clifton Special School in Bangor Co. Down where my son Brian studies. I was also inspired and so proud that Brian joined me on a few of the walking stages. Ulster Coastal Run describes spectacular beaches, friendly villagers, Atlantic storms, a quick sprint through a prison, seeing the 'Garden of Eden' (that's just outside Carrickfergus!) and crossing 'one man's pass' over the cliffs of Slieve League in Donegal. It is a story of love and inspiration. One that has yet to end as I set my sights on the rest of Ireland.
