Just Run

Cementing the notion that nearly anyone can run, this is a book is for all types of runners, but particularly beginners and casual runners, as Merili shares how she created a sustainable running habit and combines this with practical tips and advice.Whether you're aiming for marathons, ultras, or you stick to 5ks, you are a runner, and that's truly awesome! Discover the transformative magic that unfolds when you lace up your shoes and decide to just run.

Don’t Crush the Eggs in Your Armpit
The beauty of Athletics is that it has something to suit virtually everyone and it is an accessible sport in which performances can all be measured and recorded. As Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the father of the modern Olympics, said, "The important thing in life is not the triumph, but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered, but to have fought well."Awareness of the efforts of others within an event and those competing for the same team, be it school, club or beyond, can stimulate team spirit and lead to long-term friendships. The seeds for this book were sown many moons ago, when an eager group of Loughborough PE students were riveted to every word of the legendary National Coach Geoff Dyson. Full of well-researched technical expertise, he concluded with a strange but true statement, "You can't have pole vaulters without poles. Now go back to your hinterlands and spread the Gospel!" It is hardly surprising that some of his audience left mildly confused.

The Race Against Time
'In The Race Against Time, Askwith touches upon something larger than simply running or sport - he helps us to see ourselves ... Both inspiring and moving' - Adharanand Finn, author of Running with the Kenyans A quest for the secrets of happy, healthy whole-life running, and how runners can keep enjoying their sport, whatever their age What do you do when the sport that has been your lifeline to physical and mental well-being starts to slip away from you? Richard Askwith, a life-long running enthusiast, was sunk in mid-life despair. Plagued by injuries and demoralised by failing strength and speed, he was on the point of giving up for good. Then he came across the remarkable world of late-life athletics, and resolved to find out more. The result is a thrilling, life-affirming quest for the secrets of the happy few who keep on running all through life's later decades, culminating in a life-changing adventure at the World Masters Athletics Championships. It's a resounding message of hope for any runner who has felt their joy in their sport being undermined by age. Colourful, informative and inspiring, The Race Against Time is a story of cold science and heart-warming resilience; of champions and also-rans; of sprinting centenarians and forty-something super-athletes barely touched by age. Its heroes are experts and enthusiasts - scientists, coaches, runners - from many countries, each with a different story to tell. What unites them is a single belief: that you don't have to take growing old lying down. This is a book for anyone who has ever felt the healing power of running. It is both a very personal account of one man's journey from despair to hope, and an exhilarating guide, explaining how timely adjustments to lifestyle and training can slow the progress of physiological decay, while sheer human spirit can, if you are lucky, keep you running happily and healthily, all the way into extreme old age.

From Zero to Ironman Triathlon
Approaching middle-age, putting on weight and brand new to the sport of triathlon, I went from a short sprint triathlon to Ironman in four months. With three sports; gear selection, nutrition and training plans are key to your success and in my case required detailed research and consultation. What I found was that much of the material available already assumed a certain level of knowledge or capability, or was just too broad to be of practical use. This book is about practical leanings, tips and advice for beginners or those new to the sport of triathlon and helping set them up for success. This book tells the story of my journey including such things as the look of disbelief and responses from family, friends and work colleagues when they heard I was going to do an Ironman, saying things like "You know you have to be fit to do that?" and "I really don't think its a good idea, why would you put your body through that" through to getting the wetsuit shop to actually sell him a wetsuit, not believing he was capable of swimming in the first place, let alone doing an Ironman, along with all the tips, recommendations and advice he gained along the way. When you decide to take on an Ironman, the financial and time investment is significant so you really don't want to slip up due to mechanical or bio-mechanical failure. Fortune definitely favors the prepared when it comes to doing an Ironman. Read this book to understand why the Ironman triathlon is a heart rate day, understand the arguments for electronic gears on a tribike, find out how many grams of carbs you need per hour and where best to find them, race prep on the day and how best to set up your training plan and monitor it. I have tried to share all the things I believe helped make this journey from zero to Ironman in 4 months possible. The Ironman is an extreme athletic event including a 3,8km swim, 180km cycle and 42km run. You will move 226km in a single day and are unlikely to be able to do this in any training session prior. If you prepare properly both mentally and physically, anything is possible. This book is about hopefully getting you set up in the best possible way and helping you make Ironman a pleasure to participate in, as well as a success.

Athletics in the Nordic Countries
In the edited collection Athletics in the Nordic Countries, scholars from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden explore historical developments and current phenomena in the sport of athletics (track and field). The chapters provide insight into sport officials, events, and athletes from the Nordic countries that have shaped the international athletics scene. The authors identify the leading role of sport leaders from Scandinavia in the foundation years and highlight how athletics' events held in the region were milestones in the transformation of the sport. Athletics' international governing body World Athletics was founded in Sweden in 1912 as the International Amateur Athletic Federation. Seventy years later, Finland hosted the first World Athletics Championships in Helsinki in 1983. In between those turning points, Nordic officials and athletes promoted significant changes in athletics, and their innovative approaches continue to shape the development of the sport until today

The Run of Life
What do you desperately want to achieve in running, in sport, in life? How do you identify the summit that your passion is driving you towards? How do you harness that passion's remarkable power? How do you plan your path towards that towering achievement? Why should motivation not be a problem? How do you overcome setbacks? How can YOU reach your mountaintop?International ultrarunner and coach Steve Till analyses his own experiences, inspirations and beliefs - as well as those of sportspeople of all standards - to trace how they have shaped and empowered his remarkably long and wide-ranging career, in an exploration of goal-setting, motivation, resilience and achievement, to create a book that is a must-read for runners at any level, and indeed all of us who try and make the best of our abilities in any walk - or run - of life.Steve has competed in 100km and 24-hour events for his country, won medals in national championships, run more than 100 marathons, over 500 parkruns, and is a Centurion, having race walked 100 miles in less than 24 hours. His hard-won insights and moving examples can help you to harness your passion, identify your mountaintop, plan your ascent, overcome any setbacks and finally reach your personal summit.Primarily about running but directly applicable to any challenge, The Run of Life explores what it takes to identify the right goal - the one that excites your passion - to plan for its achievement, to overcome any setbacks and to prepare yourself for the ultimate test. It does this by examining Steve's own journey from coming last in university cross country races to running for Great Britain and Northern Ireland in ultrarunning events, and the experiences of dozens of other runners, sportspeople and those who strive in any arena. There are lessons here, but it's not preaching. It is more about ideas, interest and inspiration.
Multidirectional Speed in Sport
During field- and court-based sports, players are continually required to perceive their environment within a match and select and perform the most appropriate action to achieve their immediate goal within that match instance. This ability is commonly known as agility, considered a vital quality in such sports and may incorporate a variety of locomotion and instantaneous actions.Multidirectional speed is a global term to describe the competency and capacity to perform such actions: accelerate, decelerate, change direction, and ultimately maintain speed in multiple directions and movements within the context of sports-specific scenarios, encompassing agility, speed, and many other related qualities. Multidirectional speed in sport depends on a multitude of factors, including perceptual-cognitive abilities, physical qualities, and the technical ability to perform the previously mentioned actions.Multidirectional Speed in Sport: Research to Application reviews the science of multidirectional speed and translates this information into real-world application in order to provide a resource for practitioners to develop multidirectional speed with athletes, bringing together knowledge from a wealth of world-leading researchers and applied practitioners in the area of speed and agility to provide a complete resource to assist practitioners in designing effective multidirectional speed development programmes. This text is critical reading for undergraduate and graduate sports science students, all individuals involved in training athletes (e.g. coaches, physiotherapists, athletic trainers), and researchers in the field of sports science and sports medicine.
Slow AF Run Club
A practical guide and a celebration of running for runners of all sizes and athletic ability, from the founder of the Slow AF Run Club. Ten years ago, Martinus Evans got some stern advice from his doctor: "Lose weight or die." First defensive, but then defiant, Evans vowed that day to run a marathon, though his doctor thought he was crazy. Since then, Evans has run eight marathons and hundreds of other distances in his 300-something pound body, created his own devoted running community, and has been featured on the cover of Runner's World. This book is a blueprint for those who may not fit the image of a "traditional" runner--that is, someone who is larger in size, less athletic, out of shape, or dealing with any kind of health issue that slows them down--to feel empowered to lace up their shoes and embrace the body they have right now. As Evans says, the incredible benefits of running--better sleep, strong muscles and bones, better cardiovascular and mental health, and a sense of community--can and should be available to all of us. This practical handbook contains specialized advice to make getting started less intimidating, covering everything from gear and nutrition to training schedules, recovery tips, races (it's okay to come in DFL! [i.e., dead f*cking last]), and finding a running group. Full of essential advice and humor from a former newbie who fell off a treadmill on his first run (literally), The Slow AF Run Club is for anyone who wants to pick up running for the sheer joy of it.

We Share the Sun
An enlightening biography and gripping sports narrative that takes us behind the scenes into the lives of some of the world's most elite runners in Kenya and their coach, Patrick Sang. "I highly recommend this book." --Meb Keflezighi At a secluded training camp in Kaptagat, Kenya, a small town nearly 8,000 feet above sea level in the Great Rift Valley, three-dozen world-class runners, including Olympic champions, world record holders and the fastest marathoner of all-time, share simple dormitory-style rooms and endure grueling workouts six days a week. These determined, devoted, and selfless runners are who they are because of a man named Patrick Sang. One of the greatest--and least-heralded coaches in the sport--Sang is described by his athletes as a "life coach." In We Share the Sun, Sarah Gearhart takes us inside this high-octane world of elites of which few are even aware of and even fewer have ever seen. We are immersed in Sang's remarkable story, from his college days in the US to winning an Olympic medal in the steeplechase, and his journey to become a man who redefines what coaching means. There is no singular secret to athletic success, but, as readers will learn, Sang's holistic philosophy is like no other approach in the world. It is rooted in developing athletes who can navigate the pressures of elite competition--and life itself. In these pages, we explore Sang's influence on his athletes -- including his unique and longstanding relationship with marathon world record holder Eliud Kipchoge -- as they prepared for the delayed Tokyo Olympics and other competitions. We witness the remarkable recovery of two-time New York City Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor after a freak accident as he strove to earn his first Olympic medal. And we follow one of the world's most dominant mid-distance runners, Faith Kipyegon, as she attempted a historic repeat title in the 1,500 meters three years after the birth of her first child. We Share the Sun brings forth the remarkable lives and stories of East African runners, whose stories are seldom shared. Through Gearhart's vivid prose, we experience the richness that exists in Kenya as we come as close as we possibly can to running alongside a current and future generation of elites--and the man who molds them into champions.

Running
In Running, former NCAA Division I track athlete Lindsey A. Freeman presents the feminist and queer handbook of running that she always wanted but could never find. For Freeman, running is full of joy, desire, and indulgence in the pleasure and weirdness of having a body. It allows for a space of freedom-to move and be moved. Through tender storytelling of a lifetime wearing running shoes, Freeman considers injury and recovery, what it means to run as a visibly queer person, and how the release found in running comes from a desire to touch something that cannot be accessed when still. Running invites us to run through life, legging it out the best we can with heart and style.
