The Third Pole
***NPR Books We Love selection*** "If you're only going to read one Everest book this decade, make it The Third Pole. . . . A riveting adventure."--OutsideShivering, exhausted, gasping for oxygen, beyond doubt . . . A hundred-year mystery lured veteran climber Mark Synnott into an unlikely expedition up Mount Everest during the spring 2019 season that came to be known as "the Year Everest Broke." What he found was a gripping human story of impassioned characters from around the globe and a mountain that will consume your soul--and your life--if you let it. The mystery? On June 8, 1924, George Mallory and Sandy Irvine set out to stand on the roof of the world, where no one had stood before. They were last seen eight hundred feet shy of Everest's summit still "going strong" for the top. Could they have succeeded decades before Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay? Irvine is believed to have carried a Kodak camera with him to record their attempt, but it, along with his body, had never been found. Did the frozen film in that camera have a photograph of Mallory and Irvine on the summit before they disappeared into the clouds, never to be seen again? Kodak says the film might still be viable. . . . Mark Synnott made his own ascent up the infamous North Face along with his friend Renan Ozturk, a filmmaker using drones higher than any had previously flown. Readers witness first-hand how Synnott's quest led him from oxygen-deprivation training to archives and museums in England, to Kathmandu, the Tibetan high plateau, and up the North Face into a massive storm. The infamous traffic jams of climbers at the very summit immediately resulted in tragic deaths. Sherpas revolted. Chinese officials turned on Synnott's team. An Indian woman miraculously crawled her way to frostbitten survival. Synnott himself went off the safety rope--one slip and no one would have been able to save him--committed to solving the mystery. Eleven climbers died on Everest that season, all of them mesmerized by an irresistible magic. The Third Pole is a rapidly accelerating ride to the limitless joy and horror of human obsession.

A Fish Come True
A Fish Come True celebrates the enduring joys, mysteries, and miseries of fishing through a series of "what-if" stories: What if someone discovered a fly that worked on every cast? What if we could fish anywhere, any time in the distant past? What if we could explore the fishing on a different planet? What if our sport's leading thinkers suddenly decided that an infamous trash fish was really cool and a great sporting trophy after all? A Fish Come True answers these and other engaging questions in stories full of sympathy, surprises, good humor, and--most important of all--hope. In this remarkable array of stories, a tour de force of literary styles ranging from unadorned tale to historical mystery to faux press release to science-fiction adventure, Schullery honors the angler's innate and precious need to hope. And in the midst of this lively storytelling he illuminates the rich rewards and deeply satisfying misadventures that arise from the fulfillment of our angling dreams.
Goodnews River
This collection of 22 stories set on fabled waters from Alaska to Baja confirms Scott Sadil's reputation as a writer of literary fiction in the best sporting tradition. The stories capture the beauty of wild fish and the waters and landscapes where we find them and go beyond the fishing to explore relationships--between parents and children, husbands and wives, siblings, lovers, and friends--the real life situations that evoke the same win-lose drama played out between anglers and their prey. A master of language and sophisticated storytelling, Sadil brings a warm-hearted appreciation to the graceful messiness of human lives, especially the moments--sometimes humorous, always intimate--when we're hooked to something we feel certain we care about more than anything else in our lives.

There's a Porcupine in My Outhouse
NATURE BOOK OF THE YEARSequel to the author's new book, The Waters Between Us (Lyons, March, 2021), about growing up loving the woods and fields and streams of his native Massachusetts and wanting since boyhood to live like a mountain man in the woods. Having acquired a forest cabin in the course of the first book, There's a Porcupine in my Outhouse details his further adventures hunting and fishing far from other humans. PRAISE FOR THERE'S A PORCUPINE IN MY OUTHOUSE"This is the way natural history should be taught--by a good storyteller with a sense of humor." --Audubon Magazine"Tougias recounts his experiences with candor and humor. He blends the adventures of Lewis and Clark with the vision of John Muir." --Cape Cod Times"A very funny memoir. Tougias learned from his cabin experience and today he is one of New England's leading nature writers." --Book Views"This is an honest book that asks us to admit our ignorance of much of the natural process and our fears of all those unknown things that 'go bump in the night' when we visit friends in the country. Tougias tempers each small disaster with good humor and a growing love for a world that he at first finds completely foreign, but which he ultimately realizes he cannot part with." --Bill Eddy, author of The Other Side of the WorldHere are Michael Tougias' adventures at a tiny A-frame cabin in Northern Vermont where he learns that nature has a way of becoming our instructor. This funny, honest, and personal account is the perfect book for anyone who loves the outdoors and loves to laugh.
The Venerable Fly Tyers
"I fish because ... I can't turn myself into a trout!"Telling a good fish story is a skill that, like good wine or cheese, gets better with age. In The Venerable Fly Tyers, Dave Jankowski presents the true antics and adventures of a group of men united by their love of fly fishing. From the fabled Au Sable River in Michigan to Montana's Yellowstone-with some duck and deer hunting thrown in-the group hooks and hopes and humbles themselves before their wives to escape the humdrum of domestic life. Known by their "tactical call signs" of Archer (the author) and Bald Eagle (the illustrator), it's no surprise that the two were attracted to fly fishing after flying jet fighters for a living. Both are multidiscipline sports. In flying, you need a working knowledge of aerodynamics, hydraulics, navigation, and meteorology. Fly fishing depends on your understanding of stream dynamics, water hydrology, casting, and ... meteorology! They both require fine-tuned and practiced hand-eye coordination. They are highly visual. They both require special equipment: a flight suit, helmet, g-suit, and gloves versus waders, Tilley hat, vest, and ... gloves. And finally, they both are dangerous: You can get into trouble in the blink of an eye! But Jankowski reminds us that the storyteller's best friend is time: The time we drank to your health. The time we talked until two in the morning. The time we buried Denny. The Venerable Fly Tyers is a journey back in time. It all happened, and how it happened can't be altered, but it can live again in a good fish story. This book is dedicated to the disabled American Veterans who have so honorably served their country since the early days of Vietnam, through all the Mideast conflicts, to this day and beyond.Dave Jankowski is a retired U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and Northwest Airlines caption. With a passion for veterans, he participates in Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing and its affiliate, Bamboo Bend, where he serves as lead instructor. Read more at www.davejankowski.com.
The Sphinx of the Charles
Harry Parker was probably the most important figure in American rowing of the past century. His heavyweight crews at Harvard topped the leagues more consistently than any other team (they won the Eastern Sprints regatta, against most of the top college crews, more than three times as often as their nearest rival). From the time they miraculously won the 1963 Harvard-Yale Race at the end of his first year at the helm, his varsity didn't lose a race for six years, and they didn't lose to Yale until the Reagan administration. He was the first US National Team coach, and oversaw five Olympic teams. He coached the sons of his great oarsmen from the 60's and 70's, and at age 70 was still putting the sons to shame on a bicycle, or running the steps of the Harvard Stadium. He was respected by all, revered and adored by his rowers, and yet no one seemed to know him. The persistent myth was that he hardly said a word, and that his powerful mystique alone made his oarsmen great and their boats go fast. Though a fundamentally compelling figure, Parker's famous reticence means that few managed to spend much time close to him. Since he made no attempt to explain himself, legends abound: he never got older; he could control the weather; he could walk on water. The Sphinx of the Charles: A Year at Harvard with Harry Parker takes the reader not only inside the Harvard boathouse, but into the coaching launch with Parker. We see how he coached--how many words he actually uttered--as he guided his team through a year of training, and hear about his life in the sport. We see a paradox: Parker remained remarkably constant over the last forty-five years, yet he constantly evolved, changed his style, and used every means at his disposal to build champion crews. The Sphinx of the Charles goes inside the rowing world in a way hasn't been done before, putting the reader in the passenger seat next to one of the most successful coaches of all time. Parker is a historical icon, part of a tradition that goes back to the beginning of intercollegiate athletics in America. His story needs to be told. The Sphinx of the Charles is fundamentally a chronicle of a year with the Harvard team and a profile of Harry Parker as he was, five years before his death: comfortable in his position as elder and master of the sport, reflective but not nostalgic, aged but nearly impervious to aging. It is driven by Ayer's own observations of Parker from his seven years of coaching and training at the Harvard boathouse, but especially from one academic year, 2008-9. he shadowed him for a few days every week from September to June, observing practices both on and off the water, and interacting with the team. The present tense of the narrative reflects this immediacy, but also the sense that Parker has endured and continues to endure. And though The Sphinx of the Charles is not a biography in the usual sense, Parker's life and career were rich and extraordinary and they must be explored. Thus, each chapter carries the reader another month through the training year at Harvard, with vivid descriptions of team practices and a sense of progress towards the spring racing goals. From the passenger seat next to Parker we watch the rowers tackling the daily workouts, honing their mental and physical stamina along with their bladework, always trying to beat their teammates in the crew next to them, under Parker's watchful eye and ever-present megaphone. Parker makes asides in the launch that the rowers will never hear: remarks about the crews and their progress, passing wildlife, memories of his life in rowing, the river and its history, the sunlight on the water. Intertwined with the narrative are historical perspective, descriptions of the boathouse and the river, profiles of other coaches at Harvard, and impressions from rowers and coaches who worked with Parker over the previous forty-five years. Telemark Journal International Volume 3
Telemark Journal International germinated as an idea gleaned from the long-running tradition of mountaineering and adventure travel literature. It is something to look up to, this history of putting into words something as awesome as the mountains, and how we move through them. Our hope is this semi-annual Telemark Journal will sit proudly in your bookshelf. Something to come back to, and something to reflect on over the years. We hope the Journal takes a spot right next to your epic tomes that explore the paths to overcoming hardship leading to greatness. It's all about the passion. Telemarkers have passion in spades. We hope to grow the Journal within the telemark community, as we grow, and ski, and pursue exploration throughout our wonderful world. This Journal aspires to be global. One that describes places and mountains of the world through the voices of international writers passionate about all aspects of fulfillment while gliding on telemark skis. Articles will appear in the original written language. We have made a big effort to translate all stories in original language to English and Italian. Half yearly? This is a big commitment and we can only succeed if we are able to attract quality editorial materials. This in turn will attract other skiers/writers/photographers. The more readers and writers, the more articles, leading, like an ever-growing downhill snowball, to new open-minded ideas and exploration. Please help us spread the news of Telemark Journal to your community. And most of all, we urge you to contribute: stories, photos, your experiences in telemark, at home, or throughout the world. From the tradition of old time exploration journals and books... We move forward with you... Thank you! Please send your articles, paintings, photos to Luca Gasparini at: journal@thewhiteplanet.it
Climbing and Tao
Sending a route or climbing a peak requires balance and harmony between your abilities and the requirements of the wall or mountain. If you think about it, the same is truth for any aspect of your life. Any tension can be dissolved if we are able to align ourselves with it. The Tao Te King, the mysterious pillar book of Taoism, contains teachings on learning how to flow, to adapt efficiently to the different situations that arise, without forcing our way. This book presents this profound millenary philosophy with a different approach, using climbing as a medium to explore and experiment, going beyond intellectual understanding. This is not a book of techniques or how to climb better, but rather an invitation to experience the wisdom of the Tao. Yin-Yang and its balance, the void or Wu Wei (non-action or effortless action) are some of the Taoist concepts that you will find in this book, described in a clear and simple way through the experiences that anyone who approaches the activity of climbing can live.
The Shining Mountain
'It's a preposterous plan. Still, if you do get up it, it'll be the hardest thing that's been done in the Himalayas.'So spoke Chris Bonington when Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker presented him with their plan to tackle the unclimbed West Wall of Changabang - the Shining Mountain - in 1976. Bonington's was one of the more positive responses; most felt the climb impossibly hard, especially for a two-man, lightweight expedition. This was, after all, perhaps the most fearsome and technically challenging granite wall in the Garhwal Himalaya and an ascent - particularly one in a lightweight style - would be more significant than anything done on Everest at the time. The idea had been Joe Tasker's. He had photographed the sheer, shining, white granite sweep of Changabang's West Wall on a previous expedition and asked Pete to return with him the following year. Tasker contributes a second voice throughout Boardman's story, which starts with acclimatisation, sleeping in a Salford frozen food store, and progresses through three nights of hell, marooned in hammocks during a storm, to moments of exultation at the variety and intricacy of the superb, if punishingly difficult, climbing. It is a story of how climbing a mountain can become an all-consuming goal, of the tensions inevitable in forty days of isolation on a two-man expedition; as well as a record of the moment of joy upon reaching the summit ridge against all odds.First published in 1978, The Shining Mountain is Peter Boardman's first book. It is a very personal and honest story that is also amusing, lucidly descriptive, very exciting, and never anything but immensely readable. It was awarded the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for literature in 1979, winning wide acclaim. His second book, Sacred Summits, was published shortly after his death in 1982.

Loserville
Winner of the 2023 Malcolm Bell Jr. and Muriel Barrow Bell Award Winner of the 2024 Georgia Historical Records Advisory Council's Award for Excellence in Documenting Georgia's History Named a Sports Collectors Digest Best Baseball Book of 2022 Named a Public Books Public Pick of 2022 In July 1975 the editors of the Atlanta Constitution ran a two-part series entitled "Loserville, U.S.A." The provocatively titled series detailed the futility of Atlanta's four professional sports teams in the decade following the 1966 arrival of its first two major league franchises, Major League Baseball's Atlanta Braves and the National Football League's Atlanta Falcons. Two years later, the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association became the city's third major professional sports franchise. In 1972 the National Hockey League granted the Flames expansion franchise to the city, making Atlanta the first southern city with teams in all four of the big leagues. The excitement surrounding the arrival of four professional franchises in Atlanta in a six-year period soon gave way to widespread frustration and, eventually, widespread apathy toward its home teams. All four of Atlanta's franchises struggled in the standings and struggled to draw fans to their games. Atlantans' indifference to their new teams took place amid the social and political fracturing that had resulted from a new Black majority in Atlanta and a predominately white suburban exodus. Sports could never quite bridge the divergence between the two. Loserville examines the pursuit, arrival, and response to professional sports in Atlanta during its first decade as a major league city (1966-75). It scrutinizes the origins of what remains the primary model for acquiring professional sports franchises: offers of municipal financing for new stadiums. Other Sunbelt cities like San Diego, Phoenix, and Tampa that aspired to big league stature adopted Atlanta's approach. Like the teams in Atlanta, the franchises in these cities have had mixed results--both in terms of on-field success and financial stability.
Sherpa Hospitality as a Cure for Frostbite
The heroic story of how Sherpas stood up and took control of their destinyEver since Europeans started exploring the world's highest mountains and trying to reach their summits in the early 20th century, Sherpas have been an integral part of mountaineering expeditions to the Himalayas. In this anthology curated from his popular Footsteps on the Mountain blog, Mark Horrell explores the evolution of Sherpa mountaineers, from the porters of early expeditions to the superstar climbers of the present day.Writing with trademark warmth and humour, he starts by bringing to life the Sherpa characters of the early days, describing their customs and superstitions, and putting their contributions and achievements into context. In the deeply personal second section of the book, he covers some of the conflicts of the 21st century, when a series of high-profile controversies highlighted the tensions between Sherpas and western climbers on Everest. He was a witness to a devastating avalanche in the Khumbu Icefall that killed 16 Nepali mountain workers and led to a labour dispute, and he describes the events that followed from a commercial client's perspective. In the final section of the book, he brings the story up to date and looks to the future, as Sherpas have moved out of the limelight of westerners, running successful mountaineering expedition companies and becoming celebrated climbers in their own right."It's uncommon to come across stories that look beneath the surface to investigate deeper issues while remaining accessible and humorous. Sherpa Hospitality achieves this." Alex Roddie

Fishing Round the World
Leander McCormick literally fished his way around the world. These many miles produced a catalog of stories in his book. From his first perch on the shores of Lake Michigan, to youthful pursuits of eels in England, to ultimate angling for the giants of the sea, he demonstrates a deep insight into both the fish and the people who pursue them. Having angled for and caught dozens of different species of fish, McCormick dryly comments, "Some were more sport to catch than others, but I assert that all fishing is good, though some is better."
