The book is a collection of stories and situations a game warden will encounter in his work. The work can be difficult and very disheartening and at times very gratifying. Wardens do much more than enforcing fish and game law, and many of these activities are noted. I have offered a few tips about hunting and fishing, which I have learned during my seventy-five years of participation in these activities and observations gathered while spending countless hours in the great outdoors. The goal of this book is to inform the public about a warden's life and the many things he is involved with in his work. I'm sure there will be some who will be critical of what I've put on paper, but I can assure you, what I've written ain't fiction. From Three Yachts
Conor OBrien sailed around the world 1923 - 1925 in his yacht Saoirse, which he designed himself and had built at the Fishery School in Baltimore, West Cork, Ireland. He was the first person ever to circumnavigate eastwards and south of the Three Great Capes - Cape of Good Hope, Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn. For this ground breaking voyage Conor was awarded the Royal Cruising Club Challenge Cup three years running in 1923, 1924 and 1925. Saoirse was Conor OBrien's 2nd yacht. His first was was Kelpie, in which he ran guns for the Irish Volunteers in 1914, together with Ershine Childers in the Asgard. Kelpie sank off the coast of Scotland in 1921, after which Conor designed Saoirse (see above). During his circumnavigarion, Conor spent three months in the Falklands / Malvinas. When he returned to Ireland he received a commission to supply a boat for inter-island trading. Conor returned to the Baltimore Fishery School to build Ilen, which he then delivered himself. Bread punch fishing diaries another slice
Introduced to fishing by my father, I would ride miles with a bamboo rod to fish the river Colne, which at that time was a chalkstream full of indigenous brown trout, keen to take the bait intended for the plentiful roach and dace. School friends introduced me to the mighty river Thames and then the village fishing club. Being affiliated to the London Anglers Association, regular matches were held on a variety of LAA waters, travelled to by coach on a Sunday. I soon learned from my elders the finer points of match fishing, winning many cups and more importantly for a cash strapped apprentice, pool money.Later on, sponsored match teams led to Winter Leagues and National competitions, one required learning to fish the bread punch, which I embraced to the extent that I have used the punch exclusively to fish for all members of the carp family for many years. I am now classed as a pleasure fisherman, but the bread punch continues to fill my nets, wherever I fish, be it river, lake or canal.A weekly column as Angling Correspondent for the Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead Observer for many years, led to a blog, the Urban Fieldsportsman covering a range of field sports.
