This is a story of the resilience of nature and the best of human nature. It is the story of a living, breathing place where the footprints of dinosaurs, conquistadors, and Comanches have mingled just beneath the clear spring-fed waters. Beneath the Surface
A wonderfully readable mix of natural history, biology, lake dynamics, and fishing tips, this beautiful illustrated volume reveals the fascinating underwater world of a north country lake. Each summer millions experience the beauty of America's lakes--the whirl of sights and sounds as boats cut through the water and birds call to each other from surrounding trees. Now biologist and ichthyologist Bruce M. Carlson takes nature lovers to the side of the lake that few will experience firsthand--a dynamic world where fish feed and spawn, loons dive deep to snap up perch, and light disappears one wavelength at a time before reaching the ink-blue bottom. With clear-eyed and engaging prose, Beneath the Surface explores the inner workings of Ten Mile Lake in Cass County, Minnesota. And from this intimate study, complemented by elegantly detailed illustrations in pencil, ink, and watercolor, we learn how the physical characteristics of a lake affect the plants and animals within it and how the various forms of life inhabiting a lake interact. Carlson explores how the dynamics of a lake shift from day to night and from season to season. He outlines the effects of a storm on the wildlife below and reveals what the loon's four main types of calls communicate. He explains the impressive intricacies of a beaver's lodge design. And through special chapters that reveal the rhythms and constraints of various species of fish, Carlson shows anglers how to hone techniques to heighten fishing success.

Tenkara & Bamboo
Dear Fellow Fisherman, Are you ready for a new beautiful and fascinating journey to discover Tenkara? The term tenkara refers to the ancient Japanese fly-fishing technique that originated to catch trout and char found in mountain streams in Japan. It was not practiced for sport or pastime as we do in our time, but was a survival fishery that served to feed villagers. It was not until the 1960s that tenkara began to become a pastime. But to refer to tenkara only as a simple and trivial fly-fishing technique would be very reductive and wrong. The philosophy of tenkara preserves and honors many of the values and skills that the mountain professionals, such as the Shokuryoshi, Kijishi, and Matagi, had.Fishermen handed down from father to son the secrets that experience had taught them, and I want to do the same thing with this book, to pass on to you everything I know, so that these ancient secrets, are available and usable for you as well. Thanks to this book you will know: The various techniques of fly fishingThe history of Tenkara and its philosophyLa Valsesiana, the centuries-old fly fishing technique of ValsesiaThe choice of the rod and all its componentsHow to prepare the line and cast the fly into the waterAquatic and terrestrial insects useful for fly fishingHow to approach the watercourse in the right way for profitable fishingTips for self-building rods and fliesThe various tricks for not being seen by fish and catching themI am sure you will be passionate about this fascinating technique, just as I was.By following the advice you will find in this book, you will become a good tenkara fisherman in no time, even if you start from scratch and have never fished in your life, because I have tried to transfer all my experience into this book.I will also describe the techniques I practiced before tenkara, and in each of them there is advice, a message that will help you improve. It will be as if you experienced them firsthand. But the most important thing will be that you will have a great time and look forward to going fishing again. So now, are you ready to begin this beautiful and fascinating new journey?

An Introduction to Fox-Hunting
This guide to fox hunting dates from the early 20th century, and contains advice on treatment of horses, etiquette towards fellow hunters, and best practice in the field.Written by a Major of the Worcestershire regiment in England, this introductory primer is one of quality in spite of its brevity. The reader is given a series of quick-fire tips and pointers on how to properly conduct a fox-hunt. The customs and manners required of a good hunter and the methods of putting a hunting horse and hounds at ease are given. By following the guidance herein, the fox-hunter will increase the likelihood of success, and find respect among one's fellow hunters. At the time this book was first published in 1911, fox-hunting was a popular sport in the rural provinces of England. Although the practice never gained as much favor elsewhere, books such as this were intended as an introduction for readers across the English-speaking world. Today fox-hunting is controversial; proponents note its importance in country heritage and in pest control for farmers, while opponents consider the sport an example of animal cruelty.
Croquet
This official manual of the British Croquet Association dates from 1920, and includes several illustrations which help explain the rules and methodology behind this classic game.Variations of croquet date back to 17th century England, with the monarch Charles II said to have partook in an early incarnation of the game. The first descriptions resembling the modern game however appeared in Victorian times; it was in this period that croquet ascended to popularity, gaining appreciation as a tranquil yet engaging compliment to outdoor gatherings. By 1920, when this guidebook was published, croquet had swung in and out of fashion multiple times; nevertheless, its place in the recreational roster of Europeans and North Americans alike was clear. This book is intended as a handy reference for experienced players and beginners alike. It contains the essential instructions, measurements and laws of the game. The simplicity and flexibility of croquet is evident; it can be played upon garden or park lawns, at the beach, or upon grassy meadows. Yet while the game can be picked up with ease and its equipment is easy to assemble, this manual is clear that mastering play is a tough accomplishment.

Jazz Age Giant
Named a Best Baseball Book of 2023 by Sports Collectors Digest In the early 1920s, when the New York Yankees' first dynasty was taking shape, they were outplayed by their local rival, the New York Giants. Led by manager John McGraw the Giants won four consecutive National League pennants and two World Series, both against the rival Yankees. Remarkably, the Giants succeeded despite a dysfunctional and unmanageable front office. And at the center of the turmoil was one of baseball's more improbable figures: club president Charles A. Stoneham, who had purchased the Giants for $1 million in 1919, the largest amount ever paid for an American sports team. Short, stout, and jowly, Charlie Stoneham embodied a Jazz Age stereotype--a business and sporting man by day, he led another life by night. He threw lavish parties, lived extravagantly, and was often chronicled in the city tabloids. Little is known about how he came to be one of the most successful investment brokers in what were known as "bucket shops," a highly speculative and controversial branch of Wall Street. One thing about Stoneham is clear, however: at the close of World War I he was a wealthy man, with a net worth of more than $10 million. This wealth made it possible for him to purchase majority control of the Giants, one of the most successful franchises in Major League Baseball. Stoneham, an owner of racehorses, a friend to local politicians and Tammany Hall, a socialite and a man well placed in New York business and political circles, was also implicated in a number of business scandals and criminal activities. The Giants' principal owner had to contend with federal indictments, civil lawsuits, hostile fellow magnates, and troubles with booze, gambling, and women. But during his sixteen-year tenure as club president, the Giants achieved more success than the club had seen under any prior regime. In Jazz Age Giant Robert Garratt brings to life Stoneham's defining years leading the Giants in the Roaring Twenties. With its layers of mystery and notoriety, Stoneham's life epitomizes the high life and the changing mores of American culture during the 1920s, and the importance of sport, especially baseball, during the pivotal decade.
Bread punch fishing diaries another slice
Introduced to fishing by my father, I would ride miles with a bamboo rod to fish the river Colne, which at that time was a chalkstream full of indigenous brown trout, keen to take the bait intended for the plentiful roach and dace. School friends introduced me to the mighty river Thames and then the village fishing club. Being affiliated to the London Anglers Association, regular matches were held on a variety of LAA waters, travelled to by coach on a Sunday. I soon learned from my elders the finer points of match fishing, winning many cups and more importantly for a cash strapped apprentice, pool money.Later on, sponsored match teams led to Winter Leagues and National competitions, one required learning to fish the bread punch, which I embraced to the extent that I have used the punch exclusively to fish for all members of the carp family for many years. I am now classed as a pleasure fisherman, but the bread punch continues to fill my nets, wherever I fish, be it river, lake or canal.A weekly column as Angling Correspondent for the Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead Observer for many years, led to a blog, the Urban Fieldsportsman covering a range of field sports. A natural progression from the blog was to write my first book about my angling specialty, bread punch fishing. Bread Punch Fishing Diaries was published in 2017. Bread Punch Fishing Diaries Another Slice is the culmination of another five years of exclusively fishing the Punch, on widely differing waters and how I fished them.

Black Mercuries
"An essential source on African American athletes and Olympic history." --Booklist, Starred Review, and Named a Booklist Top 10 Sports Book of 2023The first book to fully chronicle the struggles and triumphs of African American athletes in the Modern Olympic summer games. In the modern Olympic Games, from 1896 through the present, African American athletes have sought to honor themselves, their race, and their nation on the global stage. But even as these incredible athletes have served to promote visions of racial harmony in the supposedly-apolitical Olympic setting, many have also bravely used the games as a means to bring attention to racial disparities in their country and around the world. In Black Mercuries: African American Athletes, Race, and the Modern Olympic Games, David K. Wiggins, Kevin B. Witherspoon, and Mark Dyreson explore in detail the varied experiences of African American athletes, specifically in the summer games. They examine the lives and careers of such luminaries as Jesse Owens, Rafer Johnson, Wilma Rudolph, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Michael Johnson, and Simone Biles, but also many African American Olympians who have garnered relatively little attention and whose names have largely been lost from historical memory. In recounting the stories of these Black Olympians, Black Mercuries makes clear that their superior athletic skills did not always shield them from the racial tropes and insensitivity spewed by fellow athletes, the media, spectators, and many others. Yet, in part because of the struggles they faced, African American Olympians have been extraordinarily important symbolically throughout Olympic history, serving as role models to future Black athletes and often putting their careers on the line to speak out against enduring racial inequality and discriminatory practices in all walks of life.
Good Hunting
This book offers to younger readers a series of pictures of out-door life and big-game hunting in the West. More than this, the author makes us feel not only the zest of sport and adventure, but also the interest attaching to the habits and peculiarities of the remarkable animals which he describes. It is a field-book, since it is written by a true sportsman out of his own experiences, and its general spirit tends to a better appreciation of the value of close observation of animal life. The elk, bear, goats, deer, and other animals which are described, represent the most remarkable large fauna of our country. These descriptions, by one whose acquaintance with them has been so intimate, have an added value in view of the diminution in their number. It is interesting, also, to remember that the influence of the author has been constantly exerted in favor of the preservation of big game and the maintenance of national parks and forest reserves, which, in addition to other advantages, include the protection of these noble forms of animal life. This series of articles upon big-game hunting was written for Harper's Round Table, and published therein in 1897. The picture of ranch life which forms the closing chapter appeared in Harper's Round Table in 1896. These articles are now presented together in book form for the first time after consultation with the author. For the title of the book and the proof-reading the publishers are responsible.

Stick Float Wizardry
The stick float technique appeals to the senses of river anglers UK-wide: touch certainly, as this float requires precision and attention to detail to fish it well and without it some bites will be missed, sight, of course, as watching that float tip like a hawk as it travels downstream is vital to detect those bites, and sound - that unmistakeable 'clunk' when a fish takes the bait and the strike connects with a lively fish is music to our ears. All anglers in this book have known the thrill of this experience many times over, and the contents are testimony to their skill. Hope you like their stories.
