From Dumyat to Mont Blanc
Born in the Central Scotland town of Bonnybridge, Ian McNeish may have seemed an unlikely climbing enthusiast. The closest 'peak' to his home was Cowden Hill, which at an elevation of 55.4 metres is only the 14,650th highest in Britain! But from these early experiences on the hills, encouragement from friends and colleagues soon saw Ian embarking on a lifelong adventure which would see him climbing Munros and Corbetts alike. Whether cycling through the Outer Hebrides for charity or white-water rafting in New Zealand, Ian is someone who has seen life. But nothing could have prepared him for facing the biggest climbing challenge of his career when he tackled the famous peak of Mont Blanc-the highest mountain in the Alps, with a summit 4,808 metres above sea level. From his experiences in Mountain Rescue Teams to not one but two successful attempts at Scotland's famous cross-country Ultimate Challenge, join Ian as he relates amazing stories of some of the most stunning places in the world. He will reveal what it means to truly be alive in the mountains.
In Oceans Deep
In this masterful account in the spirit of Bill Bryson and Ian Frazier, a longtime deep-sea diver masterfully weaves together the science and history of Earth's last remaining frontier: the sea.In an age of unprecedented exploration and innovation, our oceans remain largely unknown, and endlessly fascinating: full of mystery, danger, beauty, and inspiration. In Oceans Deepcelebrates the daring pioneers who tested the limits of what the human body can endure under water: free divers able to reach 300 feet on a single breath; engineers and scientists who uncovered the secrets of decompression; teenagers who built their own diving gear from discarded boilers and garden hoses in the 1930s; saturation divers who lived under water for weeks at a time in the 1960s; and the trailblazing men who voluntarily breathed experimental gases at pressures sufficient to trigger insanity.Tracing both the little-known history and exciting future of how we travel and study the depths, Streever's captivating journey includes seventeenth-century leather-hulled submarines, their nuclear-powered descendants, a workshop where luxury submersibles are built for billionaire clients, and robots capable of roving unsupervised between continents, revolutionizing access to the ocean. In this far-flung trip to the wild, night-dark place of shipwrecks, trapped submariners, oil wells, innovative technologies, and people willing to risk their lives while challenging the deep, we discover all the adventures our seas have to offer -- and why they are in such dire need of conservation.

Fifth Edition. .- Welcome to an educational and entertaining encounter with your RV's 120-Volt Electricity. This Primer was explicitly designed to get all RVers thinking in a different direction. - Written for all RV enthusiasts, especially those who are: Initially "CONSIDERING" RVing, Just "BEGINNING" to RV, Have been "CAMPING for YEARS," or, Living the dream of "FULL-TIMING." .- The information within will clearly demonstrate that living with electricity in an RV is NOT the same as living with it in a house. Principally, a knowledge level that will enable each reader to start thinking in terms of "electrical cause and effect"- thus preventing the proverbially frustrating, "OH, NO! NOW, WHAT?" when everything electric in the RV suddenly "quits," and you have no idea why? .- The included Editorial Comments embody the author's many years of hands-on experience: using and living in RVs, conducting the business of repairing RVs, and, also, specializing in educating the RV owners. .- The ladies are especially encouraged to read everything between this book's covers. Then, they will understand where their partner's logic went wrong, and confidently be able to "suggest" a different approach.

Nymph Fishing in Perspective
Nymph Fishing in Perspective brings the history of nymph fishing for trout up to date. The first chapter will give those new to the history and development of nymph fishing a good grounding in the subject while not being simply a repetition for those who read the author's first book NYMPH FISHING, A History of the Art and Practice. For them it will be something of a refresher. Nymph Fishing in Perspective contains much new information, particularly about Big Jim Leisenring and "Pete" Hidy, as well as previously unseen or rarely published photographs. The history of nymph fishing is a complex story of human foibles and societal values. Early ideas that were not understood or recognised as valuable by a broad audience and left to moulder. Practices based on keen observation and good fly tying creating success that engenders jealousy among "brothers of the angle". The imposition of some arbitrary depth of water above which it is acceptable to catch a trout, but let your fly sink deeper and your ethics are called into question. (An outsider might suggest that much of this discomfort is that it's rooted in the English class system and the claiming of all rights to good water - nationals of other countries just go fishing). This history stretches over centuries and nations. Inevitably, one person or their ideas are relevant to more than one place in this book, so collecting all the main characters and listing them in the order they appear in this book and in one place provides an anchoring point for readers."Terry Lawton has done a sterling job cooking up this book. He has comprehensively researched British, American and international writings on nymphing, and ladled great appetising chunks into 'Nymph Fishing in Perspective'. The gravy between the chunks of meat is savoury too, and helps it all come together into a book that the reader can devour with gusto whilst appreciating the more subtle flavours our chef has introduced." Peter Hayes, authour of Fly Fishing Outside The Box, Emerging Heresies"After many years of immersing himself in the Leisenring-Hidy story, Terry Lawton has gracefully and accurately described their contributions to the history of wet-fly tying and fishing for trout. Lawton's writing, and thoughtful choice of extracts, helps to bring to life this chapter of fly fishing history in the United States, including the Leisenring Lift, presentation of the fly to the trout, and V. S. Hidy's coinage of the term flymph." - Lance Hidy, son of Vernon S "Pete" Hidy
Wildfowling Tales Past and Present
I have spent a lifetime wildfowling and involved in shooting and fieldsports. Wildfowling has been in my family for over a hundred years, it's in my blood. I have a passion for punt gunning and have also spent the last year breeding award winning gun dogs, particularly Chesapeake Bay Retrievers.I decided to write this book as quite often I would find myself relaying some of my wildfowling, punt gunning, shooting and dog breeding stories and advice to friends and people I have met. It dawned on me that I had a wealth of experience and stories that I would like to share with others.I have put together this book to give you an insight into the world of wildfowling, fieldsports, punt gunning and dog breeding that I have gained over the years. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have enjoyed putting it all down on paper. I've included some interesting and humorous stories as well from over the years.

Why Caravans Roll Over
Caravans and their tow-vehicles have a unique type of accident (jackknifing and rolling over). The cause is known and long understood. The rig is triggered from its intended stabilising characteristic (understeer) into seriously escalating unstabilising oversteer. In conjunction with caravan and other issues, your tow vehicle's margin of understeer ultimately determines your rig's stability and especially how it will act in an emergency swerve at high speed. If understeer is reduced to zero (or minus) the tow vehicle will oversteer. If not corrected in time the rig may jackknife, especially at high speed. Why Caravans Roll Over examines causes of caravan roll over in detail and in plain English. It provides ways to evaluate and improve the safety of your own rig. It identifies high risk situations and gives clear advice about how to avoid the dangers that are very much a part of towing a caravan.
The Compleat Angler
The Compleat Angler (the spelling is sometimes modernised to The Complete Angler, though this spelling also occurs in first editions) is a book by Izaak Walton. It was first published in 1653 by Richard Marriot in London. Walton continued to add to it for a quarter of a century. It is a celebration of the art and spirit of fishing in prose and verse.Walton was born in Stafford and moved to London when he was in his teens in order to learn a trade. The Compleat Angler reflects the author織s connections with these two locations. The book was dedicated to John Offley of Madeley, Staffordshire, and there are references in it to fishing in the English Midlands. However, the work begins with Londoners making a fishing trip to the Lea Valley in Hertfordshire.Walton was not sympathetic to the Puritan regime of the 1650s and the work has been seen as a reaction to the turbulence of the English Civil War and its aftermath; "the disorder of the present times received muted comment in the work's scenes of harmony", is the view of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography. The Compleat Angler was published by the bookseller Richard Marriot whose business was based in Fleet Street near where Walton had a shop. Walton was a friend of Marriot's father John, who had started the business, but was in retirement by the time the book appeared. The first edition featured dialogue between veteran angler Piscator and student Viator, while later editions change Viator to hunter Venator and added falconer Auceps. There were a number of editions during the author's lifetime. There was a second edition in 1655, a third in 1661 (identical with that of 1664), a fourth in 1668, and a fifth in 1676. In this last edition, the thirteen chapters of the original had grown to twenty-one, and a second part was added by his friend and brother angler Charles Cotton, who took up Venator, where Walton had left him and completed his instruction in fly fishing and the making of flies.
75 Years of BallsThe History of the Imperial Poona Yacht Club
"The yachting world is divided into three factions: those who believe the Imperial Poona Yacht Club exists, those who may be termed the 'come-on-pull-the-other one' lot, and my wife," wrote former yachting journalist John Chamier in an article in The Field in December 1979.As unbelievable as it may sound, the Imperial Poona Yacht Club (IPYC) does exist and celebrated its 75thanniversary in 2009 when this history was written. 75 Years of Balls (named after the Club's burgee of three red balls on a yellow background) traces the history of the Club from its foundation in Oxford through a world war to its current position as the only Imperial Yacht Club recognised by the Royal Yachting Association.Poona was formed in 1934 as a reaction against the imperial bores returning from India at the time. Its active membership is limited to 25. The founder, Sir Reginald Bennett, was quoted in the Daily Mail in 1983: "There are only 25 members and they all have to be fantastic sailors to qualify - Prince Philip is only an honorary member."Despite this slight, Prince Philip, or as he is better known within Poona, The Maharaja of Cooch Parwani, has deigned to comment in his Forward (as opposed to Backward, or even Foreword - you will have to read it to find out why!) to the history: "If you can bring yourself to read this book from cover to cover, you will be in a position to judge for yourself whether, or not, life can be significantly improved by not taking it too seriously all the time."The author, The Gully Gully Man, has, according to the Maharaja, "successfully met the challenge to combine historical accuracy while contending with the outrageous and the absurd."

Nordalpen I
Adventure Relativity
There are moments in life that change our perceptions. When we are faced with difficult challenges, with scenes of beauty, with frightening emergencies, with quiet solitude, we often experience a sense of time in different ways. Sometimes it seems to speed up, to race, and in other situations, it seems to move slowly, to crawl. In Adventure Relativity: When Intense Experience Shifts Time, author Steve Gardiner takes the reader on a journey through a childhood game, a cardiac arrest, a high-altitude climb, a solo trip into the mountains, a heated run in the Boston Marathon, and other adventures that stretched his senses, pulled at his emotions, and gave him a stronger sense of meaning in life.
