Taverning After Nine
In "Taverning After Nine," Paballo, a gay man in his 30s from a Johannesburg township, moves to a rural South African province and discovers that the local bars and taverns are hubs of alcohol abuse and fluid sexuality. To navigate this new world, he enlists the help of local bisexual Xolani and two gay friends, Happy and Sylvester. When he meets the elusive and charming Gabriel, who is bisexual and in the closet, they embark on an arduous months-long taverning journey together. However, Gabriel's true character is revealed through violence and criminal activity, which ultimately leads to a heartbreaking tragedy. Paballo must then navigate his grief and interrogate his choices in men and masculinity within the context of being a gay man in black low-income neighborhoods in South Africa. "Taverning After Nine" is a poignant exploration of love, loss, and identity in a complex world.
A Thousand Lives
With an astounding sense of timing, Annabel Townsend signed a lease on a new bookstore venture, one week before the Covid-19 pandemic was declared. Not to be deterred by a mere global crisis, she decided that lockdowns were the perfect opportunity to get people reading. With the world growing ever more strange around it, the fledgling business began providing an essential form of escapism and solace in troubled times-books. Faced with nightmare landladies, temperature extremes, conspiracy theorists, and delivering books via bicycle, it soon became clear that Covid-19 was the least challenging part of operating the business.Framed by different works of fiction, these essays tell the stories of the bookstore, of Saskatchewan, and of the community of customers, writers, booksellers, and booklovers that surrounded the business during the extraordinary circumstances of the Covid-19 crisis. A Thousand Lives is part-memoir, part-comedy and all true-because truth is always stranger than fiction.

Not That It Matters
"Life is full of tiny moments thrown together to create events worth remembering." Most people miss out on these mundane, ordinary, and bizarre moments because they are so busy living, they never take the time to stop and notice them. Not John E. Budzinski. He is an observer and storyteller. He not only stops and takes time to notice, but then he writes about them, too. For years the whimsical Budzinski has written about these moments with wonder, amusement, and bewilderment. For several years he chronicled his world in a column he penned in a New Hampshire weekly paper, writing about the commonplace moment, events, and items of his life. The discussions included a variety of topics, such as dating, highway travels, funerals, clutter, and more.Budzinski has gathered some favorite musings together in this book. He also included some new amusing and poignant vignettes written especially for this book. Those subjects include being stuck in the mud, being the aliens' first contact, the joys (and frustrations) of gift-giving, and others.Over 60 short essays and columns comprise the collection, grouped by topics such as Life on the Highway, Politics, Bewildering Society, and Clothing-The Naked Truth. Budzinski calls his essays "simple and uncomplicated yammerings." Indeed, the author's style is conversational and borders a stream of consciousness with humor embedded in all but the most serious subjects. Not that it matters, but none of it is all that special. Still, aren't you curious? Don't you want to know, anyway? After all, don't you think about these things, too? Isn't your world just as weird and strange?Budzinski's world probably doesn't matter much. But, just like you're willing to tell us your stories, and we're eager to listen, John E. Budzinski tells you about his world. Why? Because once you read his stories, you realize this. It does matter-to someone somewhere-someone like you.

Where the Deer and the Antelope Play
A humorous and rousing set of literal and figurative sojourns as well as a mission statement about comprehending, protecting, and truly experiencing the outdoors, fueled by three journeys undertaken by actor, humorist, and New York Times bestselling author Nick Offerman Nick Offerman has always felt a particular affection for the Land of the Free--not just for the people and their purported ideals but to the actual land itself: the bedrock, the topsoil, and everything in between that generates the health of your local watershed. In his new book, Nick takes a humorous, inspiring, and elucidating trip to America's trails, farms, and frontier to examine the people who inhabit the land, what that has meant to them and us, and to the land itself, both historically and currently. In 2018, Wendell Berry posed a question to Nick, a query that planted the seed of this book, sending Nick on two memorable journeys with pals--a hiking trip to Glacier National Park with his friends Jeff Tweedy and George Saunders, as well as an extended visit to his friend James Rebanks, the author of The Shepherd's Life and English Pastoral. He followed that up with an excursion that could only have come about in 2020--Nick and his wife, Megan Mullally, bought an Airstream trailer to drive across (several of) the United States. These three quests inspired some "deep-ish" thinking from Nick, about the history and philosophy of our relationship with nature in our national parks, in our farming, and in our backyards; what we mean when we talk about conservation; and the importance of outdoor recreation, all subjects very close to Nick's heart. With witty, heartwarming stories and a keen insight into the human problems we all confront, this is both a ramble through and celebration of the land we all love.

The Funny Bone of Dr. Michael Stone
Discover the extraordinary world of renowned psychiatrist and author Michael Stone, MD as he showcases his unique blend of humor and insight in The Funny Bone. Stone's comedic gifts have been honed since his early days as a medical resident in the 1960s. Sophisticated, perceptive, and sometimes downright absurd, his cartoons show equal reverence and irreverence for the psychoanalytic session: imagining an analyst alligator in the Jurassic Period, a computer listening to its anxious computer-patient on the couch, and a sort of Freudian meat grinder where everything that goes in (Morality, Aggression, Work, Dreams) comes out as Sex.Beyond the confines of the couch, Stone's cartoons touch on Eros, the pleasures and troubles of big city living, aging, and above all, a delightful menagerie where animals reign, including an erudite pig who shuns pig Latin in favor of Cicero and Caesar's eloquence.Animals also populate Stone's humorous writing, such as his Animalimericks, an alphabetical journey from Armadillo to Zebra, charmingly illustrated by Jonathan Peck. Other offerings include an inspired array of verbal and visual puns, a playful poem on philosophers from Ancient Greece to the present, and a perfect four-word summation of life.Whether you're a psychoanalyst or in analysis, a New Yorker at heart or a lover of The New Yorker, Michael Stone's The Funny Bone is a hilarious compendium that can be absorbed in one sitting or savored slowly; either way, it's a book to be revisited, again and again.
Kenny-isms
Hello! My name is Kenneth. This book is called Kenny-isms. It has over 650 cliches in the making. The book holds a lot of thoughts I have, plus some autobiographical information to give credibility to what I wrote. I use the word cliche loosely. I could use proverbs or thought provoking idealistic musings. I could even use words like nonsense, or funny, or brutally honest. The over all idea of this book is to be encouraging. It is to make you think. It is to make you understand that if your life is a big mug full of steamy poop, you can still get through the day in the hopes that tomorrow you can be in a better spot in life. I can tell you this book is life changing, but I can't. I don't even know if it will be life changing for me. I do know that if I never put my ideas out there, there would be no reason for my life to change. At least not in the direction I want to go. You have to put yourself out there too. This book will not tell you how to get to your destination, but it could be a help along the journey.

The Adventures of Piggy
This is a children's book for adults. It contains some of the stories of the misadventures of a very brash and outrageous doll that lived in my aunt's handbag who would come out and whisper things to her which she would repeat. Some of these stories are based on real events that happened to Piggy and my aunt, Daphne. A painting was made of him by a well-known artist, he was thrown out of a train window and he did kick sugar off of tables and jump into people's tea cups. Several poems were written about Piggy which I did not include in this book because I do not have permission from their authors, but a letter written by my great aunt, Buddie to Piggy is incorporated into one of the stories. . As children, Daphne's nieces and nephews as well as her friends were often entertained by Piggy. Those of the family who have read these stories have told me that they are an accurate portrayal of Piggy.

Conversations With My Cat
What does Schr繹dinger's Cat have to do with a chewed computer cord? How do you fit work around a cat's napping schedule? Why do cats change their minds as soon as you open the door for them? These and other conundrums are addressed in this collection of discussions between one man and his cat, wherein are tackled many of the greatest issues of our time: politics, human rights, religion, culture, history, and poop. You'll laugh, you'll cry, it'll change your life. Or not. Frankly, we'll say anything to get you to buy this book, which is - fair warning - NOT FOR KIDS, as the cat featured herein is a real pottymouth.
