Meet the Dog that Didn't Sh*t
This set of personal reflections on English words is based partly on the author's background as a South African who grew up immersed in British English. But his odd encounters with American English (one of which leads to the book's title) are only one aspect of this blog-like compilation.Entries range from odd words, like the term for using cheese to predict the future, to problems with using spell check; from famous last words to tongue twisters; and from blunders caused by typos to a baby's first words. This expansive collection is suffused with a quirky sense of humor and numerous personal reflections - on a pun heard in high school that resonates sixty years later and the author's stand on preserving the meaning of "notorious."Several jokes (including one about onomatopoeia) add to brightening the reader's journey, as does his introduction to the non-existent but intriguing Ms. Lillian Mountweazel. More seriously, he reflects on the pros and cons of politically correct language and offers concluding thoughts on the importance of choosing and using words carefully.

The Empire Sells Out
A pervasive sense of parody and humour is displayed within The Empire Sells Out, where more-than-human figures, forms, and omnipresent forces play their part in a drama-charged, shifting society. The Emperor is at its centre, an evocation of humanity traversing a landscape of shapeshifting brush strokes and bristling language - he's universally known but racked with uncertainties... The Emperor's greatest ambition is to attain anonymity. This book is part social commentary, part fiction, concentrating on current society, the media and issues concerning celebrity, art, ambition, exclusion and accessibility. It presents a series of light-hearted observations concerning issues with which readers readily identify. The narrative touches on unwanted leadership, the pressure of fame, the struggle in forming meaningful relationships, the desire to attain anonymity and the sometimes difficult process of succession.Contains over 100 pages and 48 full page colour illustrations by award-winning artist Guy Morgan.
Of Pranksters, Eight
Everyone loves a good joke, but nobody enjoys being subjected to the fun. Pranks are an especially childish form of delight, perhaps because they are the ultimate expression of prurient sadism, which we must disavow as civilized adults. We, the same civilized adults who teach our beloved youth the art of warfare while stockpiling an obscene surplus of thermonuclear weapons. Now that is funny! So, tease a guilty moment to titillate your secret sadist today. Giggling, it whispers. Such twisted threads weave life's strange tapestry. Of pranks, here find countless examples, and of pranksters, eight.

Roll Your Eyes Now
Puns, aka Dad jokes, are part of some people's every day lives. Dave Waldrop is one of those people. This book is a collection of just a few of Dave's original puns, artfully illustrated by Alma Russ. It makes a great coffee table book, offering lighthearted humor for adults and children. ''If you live in a small town, there are instances when you see someone coming toward you on the street, or down the aisle at the grocery store, and you frantically think of ways to avoid them. The inevitable small talk will be mind-numbing. You have known this person your entire life and you know nothing interesting has happened to them in 16 years. This is a dreaded encounter. Dave Waldrop is not one of these people. Folks go out of their way to run into Dave Waldrop, and, my friends, I know why. Dave Waldrop is a born story-teller. Entertainment and language flow into each other and out of Dave like a rushing river. He has the gift of gab, sure, but he also cultivates it. The very breath of Life is in him. Dave creates, collects, and spins great stories. His writing is an extension of his life. He has done for others. I can't think of anyone I would rather read, talk to, and just be with except for maybe Bob Dylan; but Bob Dylan doesn't live in Sylva and Dave Waldrop does.'' - Benjamin Woody, Sylva, NC
R & R
Serge Bering-Strait, a young poet who lives with his activist mother and four aunties in a Greenwich Village brownstone, has just gone to work as copywriter for "Women's Omnibus" magazine. Serge would much rather have remained up in his garret room writing poetry, but his mother, Dagmar, and his Auntie Janet have insisted that it's high time he got out into the world--it isn't natural to be a recluse at twenty-three--his Auntie Janet, in fact, has secured the job for Serge by calling in a favor from the editor at "Women's Omnibus," Bettina Battle. Ms. Battle, the "Battle of Britain," as she is often referred to by her underlings, hails from "Swinging London"--the magazine as well as the city. In this New York work-a-day situation of the swinging Sixties, Serge finds himself the object of unwanted sexual advances from his lady boss editor. It is all too upsetting to this young, shy, poet. He has spent his whole life under the thumbs of five very tough, aggressive women and now the additional pressure from Editor Battle, out to deflower him, brings him to a crossroads. He must assert himself! In the beginning, he has only one true supporter in this struggle: Juanna Donna Lorca, his childhood transexual nanny-cum general housekeeper for the family, who is partial to flamenco dresses. Serge, somewhat inspired by his love of the classics, and perhaps somewhat inspired by the idea of poetic justice, and simply pressured to let off steam, begins a novel--Resurgius. Coincidentally, or not, he begins his novel immediately after meeting the girl of his dreams. It is a futuristic tale of a universe governed by women who bear a striking resemblance to his mother and aunties. In the nation called Atalanta, however, trouble is brewing. The enslaved Dongs, as males are called, are in revolt. In fact, there's an underground leader in ascendancy--one Resurgius. This stalwart Resurgius bears an uncanny resemblance to Serge, obviously a wish-fulfillment, for he has everything that Serge has not--especially muscles and courage, though he is several I.Q. points down from Serge himself and wears Serge's actual horn-rimmed spectacles. Through the process of writing his novel, and with the help of his transgender friends, and his girlfriend, Amanda, Serge, who has been taught by his dominating female family to pee sitting down, stands up for himself, at last.
How to be a Nigerian
This famous little book is one of the funniest to come out of Africa. First published in 1996, it continues to be in demand. The Nigerian author turns a humorous and ironic eye on his fellow compatriots. The book is descibed as a guide for Nigerians and expatriates on the conduct, deportment, comportment, bearing, deameanour, mien, carriage, actions, the misdoings, misconduct and misbehaviours of the Nigerian adult male and female. Sprinkled with anecdotes and cartoons, the book addresses the Nigerian essence.

A Modern Man
A new collection of greatest hits from one of the greatest comedians of our time, George Carlin, now the subject of the HBO documentary George Carlin's American Dream, directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio George Carlin was: "a true, true artist" (Chris Rock)..."the master" (Jon Stewart)..."one of the Mount Rushmore guys in our profession" (Jerry Seinfeld)..."the comedian's comedian" (Jay Leno)..."an icon for comedy" (Margaret Cho)..."a deep thinker and a very, very funny man" (Lily Tomlin)..."one of my heroes" (Stephen Colbert)..."brilliant" (Joan Rivers)... You can't talk about comedy legends without talking George Carlin. Named the greatest standup of all time by XM Radio's "All Time Comedy Greats" (and #2 by both Comedy Central and Rolling Stone), Carlin garnered multiple gold records, 4 Grammys, 6 Emmy nominations, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. He was the first host of SNL, appeared on the Tonight Show some 130 times, and acted in beloved films like Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure and Dogma. Dubbed "the dean of counterculture comedians," there was no one like George Carlin. Featuring a foreword by Lewis Black and an introduction by Carlin's longtime best friend and manager, A Modern Man is a perfect introduction for new fans and a must-have for longtime fans, showcasing the longevity, range, and--above all--hilarity of the master. Filled with thoughts, musings, questions, lists, beliefs, curiosities, monologues, assertions, assumptions, and other delicious verbal ordeals, it is drop-dead funny tour through Carlin's singular mind. More than ten years after his death, Carlin's characteristically ironic takes on life's annoying universal truths remain thoughtful, fearless, and somehow more relevant than ever.
Puncilitis and Other Diseases
I'm not sure how punny this book will be, but I'm going to sharpen my puncil for it... If I'm punctual, this may be published; if not, this will merely be a sweet and pungent expereience for all.Perhaps it should begin with the famous words..."Once upun a time..."Whatever it is, it is a collection of odds and ends, random thoughts, and repartee, dedicated to my dear friends and relatives who moan and groan in happiness and urge me to puntificate! This book will make you smile, laugh, be happy. Some people consider a pun to be the highest form of humor. Some people consider a pun to be the lowest form of humor. You decide. This book is perfect for all occasions. An excellent hostess gift. Keep a couple on hand for emergencies. Excellent for your favorite reading room!
Hip-Hop-O-Crit

The Times of Our Lives
The Times of Our Lives - Tales from an Italian Neighborhood is a step back in time. Louise Mulgrew's fun and engaging stories paint a romantic picture of growing up and raising a family in Cleveland, Ohio from the 1940s to the present. It recounts the memories, the myths, and the moments of a close-knit group of family and friends.
All This Closeness
This is a story about a wild and wacky family adventure in which the Guste family takes an unexpected extended holiday, traveling by car 2,000 miles out of their way through the South of the Border country of Mexico. While it's a humorous and unforgettable episode, within the story is a message about the effort we, as Americans, must make to become more aware of our neighbors in other countries. The narrative is a page in the larger story of Louisiana statesman William J. Guste, Jr. and his beautiful bride Dorothy Schutten. From its pages emerge numerous lessons left to us by "the greatest generation."Set in the era of the early stages of the implementation of the Civil Rights Act, and on the cusp of the cultural revolution of the Woodstock era, the story is narrated by a teen who is considering seemingly insurmountable social issues and problems facing the world and her community. As hilarious episodes befall the travelers along the Mexican highways, the teens have many an opportunity to explore issues of significance and engage their father, a well- known social activist, in discussions about bringing about positive change in the world. Although her parent's adages and aphorisms seem too easy an answer for difficult questions, the narrator and her siblings come away with lessons for a lifetime regarding RISK, FAITH, ADVENTURE AND DIVERSITY. A true story written as creative nonfiction, All This Closeness is a valuable and fun read providing insights for readers of every age. The internationally acclaimed author Walker Percy reviewed this story and commented that it was one "which should have a universal appeal."
Dogs Eye and Dead Horse
It's much more fun to say 'What's the John Dory?' instead of 'What's the story?' and 'Give me a Captain Cook' instead of 'Give me a look', and wonderfully cheeky to remark 'Who made the apple tart?' instead of 'Who made a fart?' But there is also a darker side to rhyming slang - it can be used like a secret code (perhaps that's why criminals have always been fond of it!). Since colonial days, Australians have used rhyming slang with great style. And as the addition of Britney Spears (beers) goes to show, rhyming slang is still very much alive. In DOG'S EYE AND DEAD HORSE, Graham Seal shares his long-held fascination with this aspect of everyday language. As well as including an A to Z section, he groups the rhymes by themes - 'the body plus its functions, its adornments and its afflictions' has the most entries. Expect irreverence, whimsy and wit. You may be shocked but you will also laugh out loud.
Great Australian Urban Myths REV Ed
We like to think that we live in an age of reason and rationality, that uncertainty and the unknown have largely been eliminated by technology and science. But it seems that we have nagging doubts. Continually, we tell each other odd tales about ankle slashers and hairy-armed women in the shopping mall. We hear about phantom hitchhikers and headless bikies on the highways. Dreadful things are reportedly done to small pets at home. tummies explode at work, garden gnomes take international holidays, and what certain celebrities do with gerbils should be nobody's business. these tales are usually called ' contemporary legends' or 'urban myths'. Given their often macabre subjects, most of us hope they are just myths, but whether we believe them or not, these stories are constantly spread around the world by people who apparently believe them to be true. In this revised edition of 'Urban Myths', author Graham Seal tracks down over one hundred contemporary Australian legends guaranteed to fascinate readers with their gruesomeness and their absurdity.

Bye, Bye, Bags
I'm not going to lie, my initial reasons for writing this book were very selfish. It was purely to capitalize on my recent television appearances. But after writing and rewriting many chapters, my reasons changed. I realized someone else is probably managing the same or similar bags that I juggle. I've been knocked down, but I've also gotten back up each time. I was amazed at how many emotions were incited by reflecting on the past and reliving the situations. It quickly became obvious that I hadn't completely healed and sharing became my therapy.

Milton
I was inspired to write my first book after having Milton, a 16 year old terrier, as my houseguest. He was like a cantankerous old man, set in his ways and not about to change them. I felt frustrated and amused during his visit, and relieved when his ten day visit came to an end. However, Milton remains in my heart forever as a very special little guy.
Used/Reused
Renowned cartoonist Feggo, whose work has appeared in the New Yorker and numerous international publications, presents a delightful collection of indispensable drawings created on disposable materials. Upon arriving in New York City from his native Mexico, he was amazed by the diversity of packaged foods available, but appalled by the waste left behind. Thus Feggo began collecting interesting paper bags, boxes, cans, labels, cartons and food containers on which to create his Used/Reused series that captures the full range of pulsating life in the Big Apple. This volume accompanies an exhibition of his drawings that transform these sad symbols of consumerism into deft, sympathetic and funny visual insights into his adopted home town. As he likes to say "one person's trash is another person's canvas."

That Dog Don't Hunt
Jim Newman, a natural born story-teller, takes the reader through joyful and humorous stories about life at the hunt camp, hunting culture, and the joys of nature and wildlife. The stories are a mix of childhood memories, folklore, facts, fiction, and laughter, with the odd political rant thrown in. This book presents hunting in the light of the harvest of food, and the emphasis is on enjoying the beauty of nature in the company of family and good friends. The stories are very human, with lots of self-deprecating (sometimes laugh-out-loud) humour throughout.Readers will learn how not to choose a hunting dog, how to spend a lot of money preparing not to hunt turkeys, and how to find bears without even trying. On a more serious note, Jim talks about how to increase the longevity of a hunt camp through great communal meals, how to make hunting a multi-generational family tradition, and the importance of standing up for hunters in conversations about gun legislation. And to those already familiar with Jim Newman's regular column in The Nipissing Reader, the wait is over!

No one's visited us yet.Have you noticed that more and more athletes are saying a quickprayer at the starting line?A clear admission that you can't possibly win without divineintervention - yeah, that'll really psych out your opponents. And this 'bigger is better' thing - completely illogical.Anyone can shoot a moose that's just standing there. If you really wanna brag, hang a pair of chipmunk ears on your wall. These bits and many more in Too Stupid to Visit.__________ "... wretchedly funny." C. Mike Rice, Realworldatheism "Your material is fabulous! It reminds me so much of George Carlin. ..." Gemini Rising "Jass is a comedy genius. ... reminiscent of Monty Python ...

Poetic Mixture
Open this "Poetic Mixture;" and see what's inside, Allow my God given talent to take you for a ride. Don't judge this book by the very first poem. Please! Dig a wee bit deeper. Once you've thumbed through where my mind have gone, I'm for certain you'll want to keep her. You know sometimes when you hear a song, Or a thought may come to mind. Someone may say something that just sticks, And it ends up being a rhyme. Everything is not just poetry, There is laughter, private thoughts, and plenty of praise. In addition there are some things that I've recollected, From way back in the days. With a twist right here and a turn over there, This was written for your delight. But all things are not so amusing, When you have to take a stand and fight. No, I haven't always been Christ-like, And many struggles I tastefully share. But don't get so holy and shut this book, Like your mind have never been there. Check it out! You'll be inspired! Enjoy this hearty treat! The whole shebang was purposely designed, To touch your heart and make you think.
