Triumph 1915-1924, Model H and TT Roadster Model D
Triumph 1915-1926, Model H and TT Roadster Model DThe Model H was a big step forward for Triumph. The 1914 4hp model had paved the way and shown that the extra power available required the introduction of a proper gearbox to replace what was previously really only a souped up cycle hub. With the addition of the gearbox the whole frame was also made much more substantial than previous models. I think it would be fair to say that with the Model H Triumph motor cycles came of age. They were certainly on the right track, for the frame and engine were to appear in the Triumph catalogues for almost thirteen years. The Model H would probably be the best known Triumph from the belt-drive era. Known for it's sterling service with various armies during the First World War and for the sheer quantity produced and later used by so many classes of people; from tradespeople to ordinary ride-to-work owners and sportsmen (and women!).The Model H, Triumph's first model with a real gearbox as opposed to the earlier heavyweight cycle-type hub, made the model attractive to more than simply the two-wheel enthusiast. A kickstart made starting so much easier and it proved to be a reliable machine almost guaranteeing a return home at the end of the day. It is most probable that the Model H was made as the result of a direct request of Staff Captain Claude Holbrook of the War Office; and later to become a managing Director at Triumph.Since this was to be Triumph's first machine with a real gearbox, and Triumph had none of their own, they looked to Sturmey-Archer, whence came the 3-speed hubs. Sturmey-Archer had a new countershaft box. Designed by Jack/Israel Cohen of Sturmey-Archer it was strong, simple and reliable, and fitted with kickstart and clutch, it was superbly timed to transform the 4hp Triumph into the Model H; much loved by the Dispatch Riders in the Great War. ---------- The early decades of the 20th century was an exciting period of innovation in automotive history when travel options were limited and the freedom of motorcycling was a real adventure. Are you are restoring one of these early Triumph motor cycle?Interested in motorcycling history?Needing the correct historical FACTS for your book or film project?Or researching aspects of your family history. Then this book, being filled with accurate technical details; images and diagrams from the period; and historical information - The FACTS - is for you. Each book within the Triumph The FACTS series, is the result of patient, dedicated and meticulous research by the author to cover a single motor cycle model, or common range, in detail. This series of The FACTS books has been titled due to a remark from someone whom Peter assisted with his restoration."Over the years many people have given me advice but you are the only one who has ever given me FACTS!" ---------- On Nov 14th 1940, the Triumph factory was destroyed in the air raid on Coventry. All records were lost of models built, their dates and total numbers.4 decades later, in the early 1980's, Peter Cornelius accepted the challenge to accurately date every pre-1940 Triumph motor cycle, and spent the following 4 decades intimately researching the details of every pre-1940 Triumph, to rediscover the 11 missing coding systems.Recognised as a global authority on Vintage Triumph motor cycles, a Marque Specialist for the Vintage Motor Cycle Club in the UK even when he emigrated to NZ, Peter is the author of 28 books on Triumph history before 1940.

The Traditional Turnout
In the past, horse drawn carriages were a major form of conveyance. Just as vehicles on the road today serve specific purposes, so did the many carriages that were used. Each carriage was turned out to suit the specific use of that carriage. The horse, harness, appointments and even clothing of the driver and passengers all served a purpose. The Runabout was the pick-up truck of the past and the Gig was the sports car. Today, many of these carriages of the past are still in use and can be seen at horse shows and at Concours d'Elegance events. They are meticulously turned out just as they were in the past but with contemporary attire. Understanding the history and purpose of carriages is part of knowing how to correctly turn out the carriage. So park your pick-up, min-van or sports car and find a cozy chair to enjoy The Pleasure Driving Turnout.
The Heavener Sub
The Heavener Subdivision (210 miles of railroad track from Pittsburg, Kansas, to Heavener, Oklahoma) is a favorite line among many rail enthusiasts. It passes through the Ozark Mountains, a major attraction for railfans, but a major challenge for railroaders. A combination of heavy traffic, country scenes, and small towns allows those who follow the line to get to know it well. However, its isolation from major roads and cities can make it a hard attraction to follow. The Kansas City Southern is one of those railroads that almost everyone has heard about. Every few years, a major magazine article will cause an influx of new visitors, but these peaks seem to last only a short time. A few books have been written about the railroad, but details about the Heavener Subdivision are sparse. The merger between the Kansas City Southern and Canadian Pacific has led to renewed interest, and an increase in questions by those wanting to know more about the railroad. In particular, the mountain regions of the Heavener Subdivision are major attractions for those looking for railroad action. All of this interest has led the author to dust off earlier drafts of this book and update it for those who want to know more about the Kansas City Southern's Heavener Subdivision. The book is designed to provide a history of the construction of the line as well as its current status, and provide a mile-by-mile route guide, helping to answer the questions of "Where are we and what once happened here?"
Hotel-Train
"Hotel-Train" introduces a new concept of night train. It is fundamentally a design manual. An impressive, extensive invention of this new object: a train that runs regularly every day and is built like a real hotel - a complete, refined, travelling hotel. It is amazing to see how we could travel long journeys while doing our own work, exercising in the gym, buying a book in the library, attending a school lesson, a university lecture, a cinema festival, or a theatre show... there is even a post office for shipping or receiving your luggage, inside the train! And it looks like it could be realised right now. Internal design, on-board and off-board services, routes and timetables, carriage layout, a basic business plan... this book contains more than 80 innovative ideas, usable individually or as a whole; there is everything you need to start the realisation of such an incredible train from scratch (in this case, if you plan to work on it, please consider the "Reader-Writer Agreement" section, at the beginning of the book).During the work the Author imagines collaborating with a new railway company, to invent and design this new concept. Sometimes you will see what the company and the designer say to each other. In the book there are many illustrated comparisons with the current state of the art, including several luxury trains - often unknown - which offer expensive railway cruises in refined bedrooms, lounges and restaurants. The Reader can find several practical addresses of operating luxury trains all over the globe; with those addresses you can book a cruise even today, if you can afford it. Those trains seem very comfortable, but they lack all the innovations of the Hotel-Train which are introduced in this work. Moreover, the new Hotel-Train is designed to travel daily, rather than in single cruises, and to be much more affordable than today's luxury trains. If you read carefully the book you can find also some vision of life, of world. A world in which entrepreneurs, managers, designers and builders work to provide new objects to the customers with the first aim of making people feel good - the purpose of having a revenue comes only after. It could seem a simple concept but it isn't, if we look deeper. And in these pages there is also the life drama of an inventor who feels the absolute need to somehow communicate his unstoppable new ideas, while everyday needs are also other...In conclusion, "Hotel-Train" is like a travel ticket that takes you to a new possible future and invites to build it together. This book should not be missing from the library of any train enthusiast or professional in the world.

Derailed
Why don't trains run on time? Why are fares so expensive? Why are there so many strikes? Few would disagree that Britain's railways are broken, and have been for a long time. This insightful new book calls for a radical rethink of how we view the railways, and explains the problems we face and how to fix them. Haines-Doran argues that the railways should be seen as a social good and an indispensable feature of the national economy. With passengers and railway workers holding governments to account, we could then move past the incessant debates on whether our railways are an unavoidably loss-making business failure. An alternative vision is both possible and affordable, enabling the railways to play an instrumental role in decreasing social inequalities, strengthening the economy and supporting a transition to a sustainable future. This book is relevant to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9, Industry, innovation and infrastructure

The Emergence of Bicycling and Automobility in Britain
In the late 19th century, bicyling and motoring offered new ways for a hardy minority to travel. Escaping from the 'tyranny' of the train timetables, these entrepreneurs were able to promote private mobility when the road, technology and infrastructure were unequal to the task. With a moribund network out of town, poor roadside accommodation and few services, how could road traction persist and ultimately thrive? Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, including magazines, newspapers and advice books on stable management, this book explores the emergence and development of bicycling and automobility in Britain, with a focus on the racing driver-cum-entrepreneur SF Edge (1868-1940) and his network. Craig Horner considers the motivations, prejudices and cultures of those who promoted and consumed road traction, providing new insights into social class, leisure, sport and tourism in Britain. In addition, he places early British bicycling and automobility in an international context, providing fruitful comparisons with the movements in France, Germany and the United States. The Emergence of Bicycling and Automobility in Britain is an excellent resource for scholars and students interested in mobility studies, social and cultural history, and the history of technology.

The Old Iron Road
In the summer of 2000 David Haward Bain and his family left their home in Vermont and headed west in search of America's past. Spiritually, their journey began on a Kansas trail where the author's grandmother was born in a covered wagon in 1889. Between the Missouri River and the Golden Gate, they retraced the entire route of the first transcontinental railroad and large stretches of the Oregon and California trails, and the equally colorful old Lincoln Highway. Following vanished iron rails and wagon wheel ruts, bumping down backroads and main streets, they discovered the deep, restless, uniquely American spirit of adventure that connects our past to our present. A superb writer and an exacting researcher, Bain conjures up a marvelous sense of coming unstuck in time as he lingers in the ghost towns and battlegrounds, prairies and river ports, trainyards, museums, deserts, and diners that line his cruise west to California. Bain encounters a fascinating cast of characters, both historic and contemporary, as well as memories of his grandparents and the journeys that shaped his own heritage. Writing in the tradition of William Least Heat-Moon and Ian Frazier, and with an engaging warmth and a deep grasp of history all his own, Bain has fashioned a quintessentially American journey.
The Mobile & Ohio Railroad in the Civil War
The Mobile & Ohio Railroad was the longest line in the nation when it was completed in spring of 1861--the final spike driven a few weeks after Confederate artillery shelled Fort Sumter. Within days, the M&O was swept up in the Civil War as a prime conveyor of troops and supplies, a strategic and tactical asset to both Confederate and Union armies, who fought to control it. Its northern terminus at Columbus, Kentucky saw some of the earliest fighting in the war. The southern terminus in Mobile, Alabama was the scene of some of the last. U. S. Grant, William T. Sherman, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Newton Knight of the "Free State of Jones" and others battled over the M&O, the Federals taking it mile-by-mile. This book chronicles the campaigns and battles for the railroad and the calamity endured by the civilians who lived along it.
Austin Sixteen Light Six
In this authoritative and readable book, Austin expert and historian James Stringer gives a unique insight into one of the most significant vintage Austins. At its launch, Britain's first motoring magazine The Autocar said that the car had 'a remarkable blend of good qualities' which were 'exceptionally pleasing to both drivers and passengers'. Based on his personal experience of owning an Austin Sixteen Light Six and his unrivalled knowledge of vintage Austins, James Stringer reveals the engineering and technical developments that helped the Austin Sixteen Light Six to earn these accolades, including the smooth delivery of power from its six-cylinder engine and the ride which was an improvement on that of similar Austins such as the Austin Twelve. These rugged and dependable cars were not only popular in the 1930s but are also a good choice as a vintage car today. Based on his personal experience and membership of the Vintage Austin Register, the author provides an authoritative guide to ownership and troubleshooting for this quietly impressive motor car.
Abandoned and Vanished Railways of Leicestershire and Rutland
Leicestershire and Rutland have a rich railway heritage. Some the earliest railways in the world were built here and by the 1920s, Leicestershire had one of the densest rail networks of any English county. But from the 1950s onward the branch lines closed, and in 1969 even the main line of the mighty Great Central Railway closed. Today viaducts march across valleys carrying footpaths instead of steam trains, stations have been converted into houses or industrial estates, and cuttings slice dramatically through hills. Three of the closed lines have reopened as heritage railways, running steam excursions for tourists and locals. This book will look at each of the vanished or abandoned lines in turn. It will outline their construction and history, then look at the line as it is today. This volume will be an invaluable aid to those who go in search of the Abandoned and Vanished Railways of Leicestershire and Rutland.
The Complete Book of Police and Military Motorcycles
This is a reprint of The Complete Book of Police and Military Motorcycles originally published in 2001. From Pittsburgh's adoption of motorcycles for police use in 1909 to General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing's motorized pursuit of Pancho Villa into Mexican territory in 1916 to the deployment of motorcycles in both world wars, this book tells the fascinating tale of these magnificent machines from their 20th century beginnings to their current use by police departments and militaries throughout the world.Joseph Berk explores the history of their manufacture by Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, BMW, and others, from marketing strategy to product evolution. In addition, he gives the reader an exclusive inside look at how specific police departments from Atlanta to Los Angeles determine which make and model to adopt, complete with critiques of the "Big Three" police models used in the United States from officerswho have put them to the test. Berk's detailed look at the intensive 10-day training program LAPD motor officers undergo is a testament to the carefully honed, specialized skills motor officers bring to their work, and lively discussions with individual officers about how they put their machines to work on the streets on a day-to-day basis offer a unique personalized perspective. Completing the picture, Berk examines the use of motorcycles in combat, detailing the specific makes and models used by Special Forces and other military units from World War I through the turn of the century and beyond.

Steaming into Troubles
Steaming into Troubles is the final book in this unforgettable series, which takes readers on a thorough, fun and sometimes poignant journey through the times when we relied on steam railways to keep our countries running. From 1814 through to 1993 (by which time steam railways had become more of a novelty than a necessity), we see life through the eyes of the railwaymen, and experience just a few of the difficulties that came with life in the cab - some more serious than others. Fans of previous books in the series will be pleased to see a few familiar faces, too.A departure from form, in that the stories span the 19th and 20th centuries almost in entirety, and cover life on a number of railways (as well as a hop across to mainland Europe), nevertheless the author's charm and wit, and in-depth railway knowledge, are evident. Guaranteed to entertain and, as always, educate. The Steaming Into series has proved incredibly popular since its inception in 2012; regularly topping Amazon categories, and gaining glowing reviews from readers across the globe. These books are by no means just for railway fans, but of course will touch the hearts of those who already know and love trains and their history.

The history of Deere & Company is several stories at once. It is the saga of an American folk hero remembered as the man "who gave to the world the steel plow." John Deere's Company - Volume 1 is the story of rural and small-town America from the time eastern farmers began moving into the Midwest in the early 1800s, through the American industrial revolution of the late 19th and up to the creation of the first John Deere tractors. It is also the story of an uncommon family whose members for 145 years directed the destiny of one of America's oldest business firms--now the largest agricultural machinery manufacturer in the world--until the first nonfamily member, Robert Hanson, was named chief executive officer of Deere in 1982.The story follows the company's role in the extraordinary growth of the American agricultural economy; its role in the discovery and application of major innovations in machinery and manufacturing methods; and, finally, its role in the sharing of that technology throughout the world. Those roles were influenced by the Populist movement in the 19th century, by the early attempts of unions to organize the farm implement industry, and by the competitive tactics and strategies of industrial leaders whose companies battled each other for market share.Wayne Broehl has taken these several historic threads and woven them into this lively and absorbing historical account. The updated and revised book has been divided into two volumes, this is Volume 1.
The Lil' Green Book of Karting
The Lil' Green Book of Karting came about from my need to understand how to effectively set up a Kart chassis (either a rear brake only or front and rear brake shifter chassis). Being new to the sport, the need for understanding both these types of chassis led to extensive research. Information sources ranged from anecdotal information to academic papers that describe vehicle tire-grip performance under load. My background in physics and reliability maintenance helped me understand Kart performance theory, and I wanted to share this understanding with other Karters. For newcomers to Karting, the book introduces the important center of gravity (CG) concept to help them understand how things work. The need for this understanding was driven by the lack of consistent and consolidated information "out there." Newcomers to Karting don't have the language to form the questions they need to ask, and the book provides all the knowledge they'll need to understand how to make their Karts perform better. For young Kart drivers (and mechanics), the book develops Karting concepts in sufficient detail to help relate both driver and chassis analysis/setup to on-track performance if datalogger data analysis is available. With better understanding, young drivers can accelerate their skill development and experience better competition. Karting can be tremendously social for folks participating in the sport, and it can also be a pathway to a career in motorsports. Either way, knowledge helps make the experience more enjoyable instead of struggling with understanding and discouraging results. Happy Karting!

Amtrak
Amtrak: The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, by George W. Hilton, deals with the system Congress inaugurated in 1971 to prevent the demise of the intercity passenger train. Operation of the trains by the federally established corporation, however, has not been a success. The trains have never carried more than a third of the 1 percent of Americans traveling between cities, and the system has lost over $1.8 billion. Professor Hilton demonstrates that the program failed because of a fallacious interpretation of the decline of the passenger train. In general, the people who value time most were the first to desert the passenger train for alternatives, and consequently the demand for luxury accommodations declined more rapidly than did coach ridership. Many observers concluded that the railroads were discouraging use of the trains by downgrading the quality of the service. The Amtrak program was based on a presumption that ridership could be restored by improving the quality of service. Actually, the public has responded much more to fare reductions and to schedule frequency than to provision of luxury. Hilton concludes that Amtrak serves no useful function in the national transport network, but is rather a subsidy to a limited number of people who value rail travel as a form of consumption. By analogy to the similar subsidy of American flag passenger ships, he predicts that Amtrak will eventually pass out of existence.
