John Deere's Company - Volume 1
The history of Deere & Company is several stories at once. It is the saga of an American folk hero remembered as the man "who gave to the world the steel plow." John Deere's Company - Volume 1 is the story of rural and small-town America from the time eastern farmers began moving into the Midwest in the early 1800s, through the American industrial revolution of the late 19th and up to the creation of the first John Deere tractors. It is also the story of an uncommon family whose members for 145 years directed the destiny of one of America's oldest business firms--now the largest agricultural machinery manufacturer in the world--until the first nonfamily member, Robert Hanson, was named chief executive officer of Deere in 1982.The story follows the company's role in the extraordinary growth of the American agricultural economy; its role in the discovery and application of major innovations in machinery and manufacturing methods; and, finally, its role in the sharing of that technology throughout the world. Those roles were influenced by the Populist movement in the 19th century, by the early attempts of unions to organize the farm implement industry, and by the competitive tactics and strategies of industrial leaders whose companies battled each other for market share.Wayne Broehl has taken these several historic threads and woven them into this lively and absorbing historical account. The updated and revised book has been divided into two volumes, this is Volume 1.

The Highway Code
The Highway Code is essential reading for all road users in England, Scotland and Wales, providing all the latest rules of the road and traffic signs. All road users have a responsibility to keep their knowledge up-to-date. This new, 2022 edition incorporates new rules on: a) The hierarchy of road users - this means the introduction of new responsibilities towards more vulnerable road users, to keep them safe on the road. These will be known by the 'H' rules b) Mobile Phones - tighter restrictions on the use of mobile phones whilst driving c) Junctions - you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road that you're turning into d) Parking Laws - new rules around parking on pavements. The Highway Code remains one of the source materials for all driving theory tests.
The Traditional Turnout
In the past, horse drawn carriages were a major form of conveyance. Just as vehicles on the road today serve specific purposes, so did the many carriages that were used. Each carriage was turned out to suit the specific use of that carriage. The horse, harness, appointments and even clothing of the driver and passengers all served a purpose. The Runabout was the pick-up truck of the past and the Gig was the sports car. Today, many of these carriages of the past are still in use and can be seen at horse shows and at Concours d'Elegance events. They are meticulously turned out just as they were in the past but with contemporary attire. Understanding the history and purpose of carriages is part of knowing how to correctly turn out the carriage. So park your pick-up, min-van or sports car and find a cozy chair to enjoy The Pleasure Driving Turnout.
The Heavener Sub
The Heavener Subdivision (210 miles of railroad track from Pittsburg, Kansas, to Heavener, Oklahoma) is a favorite line among many rail enthusiasts. It passes through the Ozark Mountains, a major attraction for railfans, but a major challenge for railroaders. A combination of heavy traffic, country scenes, and small towns allows those who follow the line to get to know it well. However, its isolation from major roads and cities can make it a hard attraction to follow. The Kansas City Southern is one of those railroads that almost everyone has heard about. Every few years, a major magazine article will cause an influx of new visitors, but these peaks seem to last only a short time. A few books have been written about the railroad, but details about the Heavener Subdivision are sparse. The merger between the Kansas City Southern and Canadian Pacific has led to renewed interest, and an increase in questions by those wanting to know more about the railroad. In particular, the mountain regions of the Heavener Subdivision are major attractions for those looking for railroad action. All of this interest has led the author to dust off earlier drafts of this book and update it for those who want to know more about the Kansas City Southern's Heavener Subdivision. The book is designed to provide a history of the construction of the line as well as its current status, and provide a mile-by-mile route guide, helping to answer the questions of "Where are we and what once happened here?"
Hotel-Train
"Hotel-Train" introduces a new concept of night train. It is fundamentally a design manual. An impressive, extensive invention of this new object: a train that runs regularly every day and is built like a real hotel - a complete, refined, travelling hotel. It is amazing to see how we could travel long journeys while doing our own work, exercising in the gym, buying a book in the library, attending a school lesson, a university lecture, a cinema festival, or a theatre show... there is even a post office for shipping or receiving your luggage, inside the train! And it looks like it could be realised right now. Internal design, on-board and off-board services, routes and timetables, carriage layout, a basic business plan... this book contains more than 80 innovative ideas, usable individually or as a whole; there is everything you need to start the realisation of such an incredible train from scratch (in this case, if you plan to work on it, please consider the "Reader-Writer Agreement" section, at the beginning of the book).During the work the Author imagines collaborating with a new railway company, to invent and design this new concept. Sometimes you will see what the company and the designer say to each other. In the book there are many illustrated comparisons with the current state of the art, including several luxury trains - often unknown - which offer expensive railway cruises in refined bedrooms, lounges and restaurants. The Reader can find several practical addresses of operating luxury trains all over the globe; with those addresses you can book a cruise even today, if you can afford it. Those trains seem very comfortable, but they lack all the innovations of the Hotel-Train which are introduced in this work. Moreover, the new Hotel-Train is designed to travel daily, rather than in single cruises, and to be much more affordable than today's luxury trains. If you read carefully the book you can find also some vision of life, of world. A world in which entrepreneurs, managers, designers and builders work to provide new objects to the customers with the first aim of making people feel good - the purpose of having a revenue comes only after. It could seem a simple concept but it isn't, if we look deeper. And in these pages there is also the life drama of an inventor who feels the absolute need to somehow communicate his unstoppable new ideas, while everyday needs are also other...In conclusion, "Hotel-Train" is like a travel ticket that takes you to a new possible future and invites to build it together. This book should not be missing from the library of any train enthusiast or professional in the world.

Derailed
Why don't trains run on time? Why are fares so expensive? Why are there so many strikes? Few would disagree that Britain's railways are broken, and have been for a long time. This insightful new book calls for a radical rethink of how we view the railways, and explains the problems we face and how to fix them. Haines-Doran argues that the railways should be seen as a social good and an indispensable feature of the national economy. With passengers and railway workers holding governments to account, we could then move past the incessant debates on whether our railways are an unavoidably loss-making business failure. An alternative vision is both possible and affordable, enabling the railways to play an instrumental role in decreasing social inequalities, strengthening the economy and supporting a transition to a sustainable future. This book is relevant to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 9, Industry, innovation and infrastructure
The Rebirth of the Missouri Pacific, 1956-1983
In 1956, the era of tail-finned cars and nineteen-cents-a-gallon gasoline, the Missouri Pacific Railroad emerged on the corporate scene as a private company after twenty-three years in a receivership. In its past lay a collapsed rail empire, a sensational bankruptcy struggle that shattered dreams and betrayed trusts, an emotional battle over stockholders' interests, and the flamboyant maneuvers of the railroad's overseers. In its future lay two computerized, merger-dominated decades in which the railroad business would serve as a classic example of a tradition-bound industry forced to adapt to "future shock." The transition from crippled line to prime property would become, as one politician later put it, "a lawyers' paradise, and a security-holders' nightmare." H. Craig Miner, using a wealth of oral and written primary sources, with the cooperation of the company and complete access to records and personnel, describes and critically analyzes, the physical and financial revolution of the Missouri Pacific.
Autonomous Vehicle Ethics
"A runaway trolley is speeding down a track" So begins what is perhaps the most fecund thought experiment of the past several decades since its invention by Philippa Foot. Since then, moral philosophers have applied the "trolley problem" as a thought experiment to study many different ethical conflicts - and chief among them is the programming of autonomous vehicles. Nowadays, however, very few philosophers accept that the trolley problem is a perfect analogy for driverless cars or that the situations autonomous vehicles face will resemble the forced choice of the unlucky bystander in the original thought experiment. This book represents a substantial and purposeful effort to move the academic discussion beyond the trolley problem to the broader ethical, legal, and social implications that autonomous vehicles present. There are still urgent questions waiting to be addressed, for example: how AVs might interact with human drivers in mixed or "hybrid" traffic environments; how AVs might reshape our urban landscapes; what unique security or privacy concerns are raised by AVs as connected devices in the "Internet of Things"; how the benefits and burdens of this new technology, including mobility, traffic congestion, and pollution, will be distributed throughout society; and more. An attempt to map the landscape of these next-generation questions and to suggest preliminary answers, this volume draws on the disciplines of philosophy, sociology, economics, urban planning and transportation engineering, business ethics and more, and represents a global range of perspectives.
TRIUMPH 650cc UNIT CONSTRUCTION TWINS 1963-1970 WORKSHOP MANUAL
240 pages and more than 250 illustrations and charts, size 8.25 x 10.75 inches. This publication is a reproduction of the Triumph factory workshop manual part number 99-0883/0889.The original 1963 through 1968 workshop manual, part number 99-0883, was subsequently updated with the addition of a 1969 through 1970 manual, part number 99-0889. Ultimately, both manuals were merged by the factory into a single combined manual, part number 99-0883/0889. This combination resulted in a comprehensive workshop manual for the entire line of UK and USA 650cc unit construction twins produced from 1963 through 1970.However, as this publication is a combination of two separate workshop manuals, some of the pages are duplicated. Fortunately, they occur sequentially and, while one will be for the earlier models, the other will apply to the later models and the reader is encouraged to exercise care in selecting the appropriate page from those duplications. Please understand that this is how the factory dealt with the minor differences within this manual. Unfortunately, the distinction between earlier and later models is not very well defined. For example, depending upon the model, the change from 6 to 12 volt electrics was spread over a 3-year period (1964-66). However, a fairly significant change occurred in 1968 with the introduction of Amal Concentric carburetors and a twin leading shoe front brake. Therefore, 1968 is often incorrectly regarded as a demarcation point between early and late models but, unfortunately, it is not totally accurate. There were a number of 'running changes' made throughout the 8-year production run of these models and the way the factory identifies the point where those changes took place is by referencing engine numbers within each individual section of this manual. Consequently, it is important to note, with regard to any maintenance and repair instructions and also the specifications in the 'General Data' (GD) section, that wherever engine numbers are stated, the data will be specific to that particular series. Therefore, the reader is encouraged to read the entire section prior to commencing any work, paying close attention to the engine number sub-sections.Owners of the 650cc machines are subjected to considerable confusion surrounding the appropriate selection of the multitude of originals and reprints of the various 650cc manuals that have recently flooded the marketplace. However, the combination manual 99-0883/0889 is the most comprehensive manual for the entire line of UK and USA 650cc Unit Construction twins produced from 1963 through 1970 and covers all DU101 through DU90282 plus the later 1969 through 1970 alpha numeric series engines, however, it is somewhat scarce and difficult to find. In addition, many of the changes made during the production run would necessitate the use of both the individual manuals. However, those changes are combined in their entirety in the 99-0883/0889 manual and we are pleased to offer this reprint as a service to all 650cc Unit Construction owners. The years and models covered are: Thunderbird: 6T 1963-1966Trophy: TR6 1963-1970 / TR6R1966-1970 / TR6C 1966-1967Bonneville: T120 1963-1970 / T120R 1963-1970 / T120C 1963-1965 / Thruxton 1965 / TT 1964-1967

The Station Agent and the American Railroad Experience
Before the widespread popularity of automobiles, buses, and trucks, freight and passenger trains bound the nation together. The Station Agent and the American Railroad Experience explores the role of local frontline workers that kept the country's vast rail network running.Virtually every community with a railroad connection had a depot and an agent. These men and occasionally women became the official representatives of their companies and were highly respected. They met the public when they sold tickets, planned travel itineraries, and reported freight and express shipments. Additionally, their first-hand knowledge of Morse code made them the most informed in town. But as times changed, so did the role of, and the need for, the station agent.Beautifully illustrated with dozens of vintage photographs, The Station Agent and the American Railroad Experience, brings back to life the day-to-day experience of the station agent and captures the evolution of railroad operations as technology advanced.

Rolls Royce Silver Cloud
The Rolls-Royce company acquired Bentley Motors in 1931 and, although models continued to be produced with the Bentley name, they increasingly used many Rolls-Royce components. By the time the Silver Cloud and Bentley S were released in 1955, they were really differently badged versions of the same design. Yet the sporting tradition of the Bentley marque was upheld with the exotic Continental models that were derived from them. The Silver Cloud family represents a pinnacle for the Rolls-Royce company. The cars all had and still have a very special presence, and the standard saloons have an unsurpassed elegance and rightness of line. The special-bodied cars, meanwhile, are reminders of an age when the skill of the best coachbuilders was something deserving of universal admiration. With around 190 photographs, this book features: -The story of the design and development of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and Bentley S Type -A look at the production development of these cars between 1955 and 1965 -An examination of the Bentley Continental models that were derived from Silver Cloud and S Type design -The history of the Phantom V and Phantom VI limousine chassis introduced in 1959 and destined to last until 1990 -Full technical specifications, including paint and interior trim choices -Production figures and chassis codes -A chapter on buying and owning one of these wonderful classic cars.

The Emergence of Bicycling and Automobility in Britain
In the late 19th century, bicyling and motoring offered new ways for a hardy minority to travel. Escaping from the 'tyranny' of the train timetables, these entrepreneurs were able to promote private mobility when the road, technology and infrastructure were unequal to the task. With a moribund network out of town, poor roadside accommodation and few services, how could road traction persist and ultimately thrive? Drawing on a wealth of primary sources, including magazines, newspapers and advice books on stable management, this book explores the emergence and development of bicycling and automobility in Britain, with a focus on the racing driver-cum-entrepreneur SF Edge (1868-1940) and his network. Craig Horner considers the motivations, prejudices and cultures of those who promoted and consumed road traction, providing new insights into social class, leisure, sport and tourism in Britain. In addition, he places early British bicycling and automobility in an international context, providing fruitful comparisons with the movements in France, Germany and the United States. The Emergence of Bicycling and Automobility in Britain is an excellent resource for scholars and students interested in mobility studies, social and cultural history, and the history of technology.

The Old Iron Road
In the summer of 2000 David Haward Bain and his family left their home in Vermont and headed west in search of America's past. Spiritually, their journey began on a Kansas trail where the author's grandmother was born in a covered wagon in 1889. Between the Missouri River and the Golden Gate, they retraced the entire route of the first transcontinental railroad and large stretches of the Oregon and California trails, and the equally colorful old Lincoln Highway. Following vanished iron rails and wagon wheel ruts, bumping down backroads and main streets, they discovered the deep, restless, uniquely American spirit of adventure that connects our past to our present. A superb writer and an exacting researcher, Bain conjures up a marvelous sense of coming unstuck in time as he lingers in the ghost towns and battlegrounds, prairies and river ports, trainyards, museums, deserts, and diners that line his cruise west to California. Bain encounters a fascinating cast of characters, both historic and contemporary, as well as memories of his grandparents and the journeys that shaped his own heritage. Writing in the tradition of William Least Heat-Moon and Ian Frazier, and with an engaging warmth and a deep grasp of history all his own, Bain has fashioned a quintessentially American journey.
