Wisconsin Central
The Wisconsin Central was a dynamic regional railroad that served the upper Midwest from 1987-2001, known for its rapid growth, colorful locomotives, and eventual integration into Canadian National. The Wisconsin Central (WC) was a dynamic regional railroad that served the upper Midwest from 1987-2001. Despite lasting just short of fourteen years, WC packed a lot of changes and development into that time and repeatedly shook up the industry. We look at this colorful operation in all seasons and across the territory it served. WC employed a wide variety of second-hand locomotives, and they are depicted working a range of tasks around the system. The classy maroon and gold livery of WC is fondly remembered. Early and late versions of this paint scheme are shown. The routes of the WC were continually refined over the course of its existence through purchases of additional lines and whole RRs. These changes are covered in detail through text, maps, and photographs. The factors that set the stage for the creation and success of the WC are also discussed.Growth of the railroad is depicted right up to the last day when it became part of Canadian National. An epilogue provides updates on these routes after the independence of the WC ended.

London's Underground Since 1985
JIM BLAKE's second volume of his photographs featuring the London Underground cover the period from 1985, shortly after the Thatcher regime's destruction of London Transport and its re-birth as London Underground Ltd., to 2021 when the Northern Line gained its new branch from Kennington to Battersea Power Station. This was a turbulent time in the system's history, encompassing the withdrawal of the last pre-war passenger rolling stock (in 1988) and then the abolition of two-person operated trains at the beginning of 2000.With the exception of the Waterloo & City Line, which was transferred from British Rail to London Underground in the 1990s, all Underground lines are covered together with the rolling stock operating them.Jim's photographs concentrate on the older types. What is very striking in them is how the system seemed to be going downhill rapidly during the Thatcher years when this survey begins - plagued by the curse of graffiti and liberally littered thanks to cuts in staff who once dealt with such problems. Fortunately, since Transport for London's takeover of the Underground from 2000 onwards, things in that respect have markedly improved, trains and stations are much cleaner and therefore welcoming to passengers. The contrast between the late 1980s/early 1990s and today's Underground is very clear in Jim's photographs featured here, most previously unpublished. It is unfortunate that further improvements, not to mention long-planned extensions to the system, continue to be frustrated by government spending restrictions at the time of writing.
How the Railways Will Fix the Future
Railway engineer and transport policy specialist Gareth Dennis shows why the railways are key to the fight for a better world for us all. The world's railways were almost entirely created by capital and empire for extraction and exploitation, so what right do they have to exist and how can they be harnessed for good? Railway engineer and writer Gareth Dennis builds a case not simply for railways as a common good, but argues that railways are a critical tool for humanity to survive and thrive. Whether it's the power of organised labour, the threats and opportunities of new technology, the distribution of democratic power or the calamitous impacts of climate change, railways can act as a lens through which to understand the future and the part they can play in it. Dennis takes us across the globe, from Virgin Hyperloop's abandoned test track in the Nevada desert to the overcrowded stations of the North of England, exploring how railways can shape and inform choices about our future, and in turn detailing how taking a long-term view can help shape transport for the better. With his deep knowledge of railways and his unique view of history and politics, he equips us with the tools to answer those imperative questions: what and who should our railways be for?
Scania 112 & 142: At Work
In the eight years from 1980 when Scania introduced the 2-series trucks covered in Patrick Dyer's new book, they produced no less than 135,311 units. For much of that time the 142 held the title of the most powerful production truck in Europe. Why was this range so successful? One reason was that the Scania's advanced modular manufacturing system allowed it to cover weight categories from 16 to 174 tons without any special types. Operators could specify exactly the rigth truck for their needs and Scania's production and efficiency were streamlined. Scania got both the engineering and design just right, matching improved versions of their tried and tested running gear with new frames and a modern, class-leading cab designed by Italian stylist, Giorgetto Giugiaro. Scania 112 and 142 at Work is Patrick Dyer's seventh book in the series. Once more he has been able to draw on two hundred fine photographs, some from Scania's own archive, as well as working shots by truck enthusiasts.

British Woodies
In the 1920s, '30s and '40s, wooden-bodied shooting brakes, estate cars and station wagons were commercial vehicles made in Britain, mostly for utilitarian roles. They were built in relatively small numbers, often by small, lesser-known commercial bodybuilding firms, and required high levels of maintenance to ensure anything resembling a long life. Every chassis from Alvis, Austin and Bentley to Standard, Vauxhall and Wolseley was built as a Woodie at some stage, and they reached the peak of their popularity in the immediate postwar years when steel was in short supply and the majority of new cars were being built for export. Some vehicle manufacturers sold wooden-bodied utilities under their own name, but most were built in small workshops under contract to vehicle dealerships or selling direct to the general public. However, labour intensive constriction, high maintenance requirements and the introduction of the unitary chassis by Britain's car makers all contributed to the eventual demise of the British Woodie. Today, there's a resurgent interest in British Woodies across the world, with an increasing number of cars being restored and cherished. The work of hundreds of small coachbuilder firms is highlighted here, and illustrated with 100 rare and previously unpublished photos. The British Woodie is undoubtedly a thing of beauty, and this book is a tribute to the skills of the coachbuilders that built these amazing wooden wonders.

Surf Line
The "Surf Line," a scenic rail route from Fullerton to San Diego, showcases diverse landscapes and busy traffic, featuring coastal views and upgraded locomotives like Siemens SC-44 Chargers. One of the most scenic rail lines in the United States is the former Santa Fe 4th District between Fullerton and San Diego, California. Known as the "Surf Line," this route operates through a variety of urban, suburban, agricultural, and even mountainous scenery. This line is most known for its coastal running at various locations between San Clemente and Del Mar, where the route operates along the Pacific Ocean. Today, this line's ownership is split between Orange County, North County (San Diego) Transit District (NCTD), San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), and the BNSF Railway. Amtrak, Metrolink, and NCTD's Coaster service operate passenger trains on various portions of the line, while BNSF operates local and freight service. Between these operators, this is a busy line with a heavy volume of traffic. For many years, the primary locomotives powering most passenger trains on this line were a variety of EMD F59s on Amtrak and Metrolink, and rebuilt F40s on Coaster. However, all three operators upgraded their power in recent years, with the State of California and NCTD opting for Siemens SC-44 Chargers and Metrolink purchasing EMD F125s. This book captures the last years of the older locomotives on this route.

Lines of Power
Written by John Buxton and Don Heath, two experienced rail professionals, Lines of Power delivers a comprehensive record of the stuttering progress of electrification and modernisation of Britain's railway network, exposing the furtive manoeuvring by competing factions within the railway industry during the 1950s. The book is highly critical of the excessive scepticism of the Department of Transport (DoT later DfT) and the frequent disproportionate, and often imprudent, interventions by politicians that have collectively thwarted the opportunity to progress a more comprehensive and cost effective 'rolling programme' of electrification.
Pontiac Performance 1960-1974
In an era before corporate average fuel economy (CAF?) requirements and emissions standards, a pioneering General Motors executive was tasked with taking over a dying division and returning it to profitability. In June 1956, Semon E. "Bunkie" Knudsen became the general manager of the Pontiac Motor Division. He injected the stodgy, boring product line with a large dose of performance. "Race on Sunday; sell on Monday" was Knudsen's philosophy. Although the idea of Pontiac getting into racing was far-fetched in 1956, Knudsen had a plan. In 1957, Pontiac released the Bonneville, which was a limited-edition, fuel-injected, high-performance convertible that was aimed directly at the burgeoning enthusiast market. Knudsen skillfully crafted a new youthful persona for Pontiac, and the sales began to climb. Pontiac's Super Duty factory-built drag cars produced an amazing line of winners. The performance mentality was clearly working, as Pontiac sales jumped to third place among the manufacturers--behind only Chevrolet and Ford. After GM ceased all racing activities in 1963, Pontiac hardly missed a beat. In 1964, the GTO was released, and a new market segment (the muscle car) was born, which sent the competition back to the drawing boards. In addition, Pontiac continued to create iconic muscle cars, including the 2+2, the Ram-Air GTO and Firebird, the Trans Am, the Judge, and the Firebird Formula. Re-live Pontiac's golden era with Pontiac Performance 1960-1974: The Era of the Super Duty, H.O., & Ram Air Drag & Muscle Cars!
The Wreck of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railway A Pioneering Railroad Undone by Greed and Fraud
This is the story of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad (later Railway) from its creation in 1846 until its demise in 1917. The book covers the operation, acquisitions, consolidations and ultimate loss of control to robber-barons. The CH&D's development from 1851 to 1917 was a prime factor in the growth of western Ohio's manufacturing centers and population. Ohio's major westernmost cities, Cincinnati, Dayton, and Toledo grew in size due to the easy access to raw materials and labor that flowed onto this road's iron, later steel rails. Other smaller Ohio cities along the road such as Hamilton, Middletown, Piqua, Lima, Findlay, Bowling Green, Chillicothe, and Ironton would feed major manufacturing centers with the materials and people that made the Midwest the industrial powerhouse of a nation. Originally built by men of vision to spur the development of the Great Miami River Valley, the railroad became the pawn of robber-barons and Wall Street bankers in 1882. Subsequently, a revolving door of rapacious owners and management would destroy the railroad from within by fraud and deceit.

Pink Cars and Pocketbooks
A fascinating history of how the automotive industry and consumers battled to define what women wanted in a car.Since the commercial introduction of the automobile, US automakers have always sought women as customers and advertised accordingly. How, then, did car culture become so masculine? In Pink Cars and Pocketbooks, Jessica Brockmole shares the untold history of women's relationship with automobiles: a journey marked by struggle, empowerment, and the relentless pursuit of independence. This groundbreaking work explores the evolution of women's automotive participation and the cultural shifts that have redefined their roles as drivers, mechanics, and consumers. Brockmole traces the rise of gendered marketing of automobiles over the course of the twentieth century. Auto companies created ads that conformed to commonly held ideas about women's relationships with automobiles. As the century progressed, marketing to women became less informative and even more gendered: the automotive industry portrayed women as passengers, props, or reluctant drivers, interested primarily in aesthetics. And yet, by the 1970s, female drivers were communicating directly with each other, forming clubs, and teaching each other through women-focused repair manuals. By examining market research studies, advertising archives, trade journals, women's magazines, newspapers, driving handbooks, and repair manuals, this book shows how women bought their way into the automobile and masculine car culture. Brockmole uncovers the stories of pioneering women who defied conventions, such as trailblazer Alice Ramsey, the first woman to drive across the United States in 1909, and Barb Wyatt, whose contributions to automotive manuals broke new ground. Women have always been users of technology, and this book illustrates how the auto industry evolved--as well as how it chose not to evolve--in response.

The end of World War II marked the release of pent-up war-years energy and the desire to live. For many this meant indulging in long-denied purchases, like a new car. For another group, including young vets, it meant a return to car building and racing. Money, exciting new cars, and speed parts all flowed freely in post-war America. Robert Petersen, a young SoCal-based photographer and Army Air Corps vet, noted the rapidly growing hot rod scene in and around Los Angeles. His first move was to organize the Los Angeles Hot Rod Exhibition in 1948. His second, and brilliant, move was to launch at the same event the first edition of Hot Rod magazine. From this launch pad, Petersen Publishing Company would grow to become the most influential enthusiast publisher in America. Petersen's magazines were rallying points for all aspects of the car, truck, and motorcycle hobbies, well as nurturing and promoting all aspects from car building to racing to show events. Hot Rod, Motor Trend, Car Craft, Motorcyclist, Off-Road and Four Wheel Drive and some 75 other enthusiast titles dominated magazine racks and provided substantial influence over transportation and numerous other hobbies.
