Drag Racing in the 1970s
Re-live the 1970s with this book that covers a sensational and unique decade of drag racing history! In the 1950s, drag racing was in its infancy. The sport made incredible technological advancements in the 1960s, and that technology was streamlined and refined with a sense of professionalism in the 1970s. It became more difficult for a local, homebuilt, shoestring-budget team to compete at the national level. These teams were priced out of the top classes by larger teams that had more sponsorship money. So, the low-budget teams dropped to less-expensive classes or simply sold their gear and stopped competing. However, drag racing in the 1970s was fascinating in its own right. There was still a significant amount of development as well as new classes to celebrate. Funny Cars morphed from altered-wheelbase doorslammers in the early 1960s to full-blown, tube-chassis, flip-top fiberglass-bodied beasts by 1970. This led to the creation of the Pro Stock class, which was a popular child of the 1970s, with its rivalries and connections to the Detroit manufacturers. In the interest of safety, Top Fuel cars became mid-engine beasts, and they turned out to be faster as well. By the end of the decade, Funny Cars nearly became full-bodied versions of the Top Fuel cars. Many of these developments are still evident in NHRA racing today. In Drag Racing in the 1970s, veteran racing author Doug Boyce takes you chronologically through the entire exciting decade, covering the cars, the classes, and the future hall-of-fame drivers who raced them. The transition to professionalism, the big-money sponsors, the many sanctioning bodies, the rivalries, and even the lower classes (such as Modified Eliminator and Super Stock) are chronicled in this illustrated tribute. Add a copy to your drag racing library today.

Contrast - Photography on the London Underground
There are currently 272 London Underground, 113 Overground and 45 Docklands Light Railway stations. Luke Agbaimoni has been slowly attempting to capture visual moments at each one. In his previous books, Tube Mapper Project photographer Luke Agbaimoni has described the London Underground as a living and breathing museum of the old and the new. As a result, the theme of contrast became the next logical choice for the focus of his camera lens, and this latest book is the result. Here, he explores what makes the underground stand out, with the contrast of sights and sounds as we travel through the city. Timeless hallway, modern architecture, old and new features everywhere. This collection of photography embraces the juxtaposition of the extreme variety of visual experiences that you can encounter navigating the London Underground network, broken up into chapters that delve into Night vs Day, Underground vs Overground, Straight Lines vs Curves, Short Exposure vs Long, and Futuristic vs Classic.
Traditional Signalling on British Railways
Signalling on British Railways underwent massive change from Nationalisation in 1948 to privatisation in the 1990s, but throughout this period much of the network's infrastructure dated from the era of the Big Four and the pre-Grouping companies. The variety of traditional signalling in use in the BR era, from the pre-Grouping infrastructure and mechanical signalling up to BR-built signal boxes prior to the conversion to colour-light signalling, is explored here. The principles of signalling operation are also explained. In this book author Robert Hendry presents a fascinating insight into traditional signalling on British railways through a wealth of rare and previously unpublished images.
Arriva in Essex and Kent
Having inherited various fleets in Essex and Kent, Arriva serve a number of locations throughout these two counties. They also operate out of the former London Transport garage in Harlow and own the former municipal businesses of Colchester and Southend. They can also be found in large areas of Kent. This book includes photographs of Arriva buses throughout their areas of operation in Essex and Kent, since Arriva was formed out of the rebranding of The Cowie Group in the late 1990s. Arriva have a surprisingly varied fleet with a range of liveries on offer, including route branding, and some buses have worn commemorative heritage liveries.
Barry Scrapyard in the Late 1970s and Early 1980s
Growing up in north-west London in the 1950s and living alongside a busy freight line, the seed for steam fascination was firmly planted in a young Geoff's head. Later in life he was able to visit Barry Scrapyard and recorded the locos seen over a seven-year period from 1977 to 1983. He then went back in the early 1990s to photograph every last remaining locomotive. Those holiday stop-offs at that famous scrapyard created a photographic record of a unique place, now long-gone.
Cranswick on Classic Chevrolet Corvette 1953-1996
Rome wasn't built in a day, and, similarly, the dream of developing a world class American sports car took time and effort. Harley Earl and Ed Cole gave Corvette a push start, and Zora Arkus Duntov took the Plastic Fantastic into orbit, based on the combination of excellent design and hardware, as well as the racing achievements that followed. Once established, the Corvette became a Chevrolet icon, utilised by Bow Tie and GM marketing to benefit the automaker. However, Corvette was no loss leader, it earned its keep and the respect of industry commentators. The Corvette maintained all these qualities despite the triple whammy of insurance rate hikes, emissions controls and fuel crises, and survived into the '80s with a fresh design that took on all sports car competitors.Archive images, independent testing, and the viewpoints of Chevrolet and auto industry personalities illustrate the rise and rise of America's only sports car, including a substantial mid-engine genesis. Marc Cranswick's original commentary pays homage to the Corvette as an enduring glamor icon and the ultimate dream machine!

With "Dodge Fever" in full swing, the Scat Pack was born. Two years later, Plymouth's Rapid Transit System followed Dodge's Scat Pack. Both programs relied heavily on grouping their performance-oriented cars with messages aimed at the under-35 audience. Chrysler incentivized owners to join its clubs by offering free merchandise. Plymouth took its show on the road with the Rapid Transit System Caravan, featuring prototypes that could be seen at dealerships. The result was one of the most memorable, highly successful marketing campaigns of the muscle car era.Whether you own a muscle car from the Dodge Scat Pack or Plymouth's Rapid Transit System era, are in the market for one, or just still have Dodge Fever, this volume will be a welcome addition to your shelf.

Land Rover Discovery
Discovering the Discovery: The Story Behind Land Rover's Game-ChangerSince its debut in 1989, the first generation Land Rover Discovery has become a beloved icon with a devoted global following. While many books offer buying advice, none have fully explored the why behind the Discovery--its creation, development journey, and the role it played in shaping Land Rover's future. The Discovery was more than just a new model--it was a turning point. In the early 1980s, Land Rover faced declining sales and rising competition from affordable, family-friendly 4x4s built by Japanese manufacturers. These vehicles borrowed the Range Rover's concept but delivered it at a much lower price. Land Rover knew it needed a response--and fast. The result was the Discovery: a bold, mid-market SUV developed under tight deadlines and with new internal processes. Launched in 1989, it hit the market with immediate success, becoming a European best-seller and revitalizing Land Rover's position in the global automotive industry. It soon became a core part of the brand's identity and laid the groundwork for today's fifth-generation models.More than just a commercial success, the Discovery reshaped the Land Rover brand. Once known solely for rugged, utility-focused vehicles, Land Rover began to evolve into a premium manufacturer of passenger-oriented 4x4s. The Discovery, alongside the Range Rover, shifted public perception and helped cement the Land Rover name in markets around the world. This book tells the full story of the original Discovery--from its design and development to its production, sales, and global impact. It also highlights its diverse roles, from a staple of police and emergency fleets to a reliable workhorse van, and its key contribution to Land Rover's American breakthrough.Richly illustrated with rare and compelling images, this book is an essential read for enthusiasts, historians, and anyone fascinated by the vehicle that helped redefine an iconic brand.

The Legend of American Motors
American Motors was the little company that made a big impact. Maker of the Rambler family car, the Kenosha-based AMC offered an antidote to the excess of Detroit's Big 3. But when America decided it wanted sporty, rather than econocars, AMC got groovy with the Javelin, AMX, Scrambler and Rebel Machine. American Motors was a proven performer in showrooms and on the track, with success in drag and road course racing. However, through it all came solid Rambler value, and a different approach from Detroit. An accent on consumer protection, along with brand label special editions. And when it came to blue sky thinking, AMC surpassed all with the Gremlin and Pacer small cars.Off road, Kenosha truly made Jeep 'The One & Only, ' popularizing the brand and making it the sales success it is today. Beyond that, AMC created America's first crossover, the Eagle. It all proved that America's smallest ... was its biggest surprise!

Burlington's Spectacular Steam Program
In the 1950s and 1960s, no railroad could top the steam program of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. The railroad operated more than 260 steam trips that carried more than 100,000 riders and left impressions on countless more trackside admirers. With well-honed photojournalistic sensibilities, John E. Gruber portrayed these trips as the events they were, capturing the power of their locomotives, the pride of their railroaders, and the wonder they inspired. This book presents nearly 100 of his best black-and-white photographs from the collection of the Center for Railroad Photography & Art, along with essays and interviews by Norman Carlson and Justin Franz.

It is a small tour though several countries. It is not the usual train picture book.It is seen from the toddler's perspective.Rather, it is what we saw as we passed by with the interested toddler. The pictures are incidental pictures. They just happened. They happened mostly because of our toddler, who is absolutely obsessed with trains and trams - and funiculars. And anything on wheels, for that sake. That is why we start with children's scale tram and train replicas. They look like the real thing - only they have a better size for children. It shows that how we experience the World is probably very much from our own perspective. The authors are not train and tram professionals and readers are welcome to correct any errors. We hope you will enjoy the book and the pictures. This title is available as ebook from D2D and in color print in the United States under ISBN 978-1-956-773-590
The North American Auto Industry Since NAFTA
The auto sector is North America's most iconic of industries. Since the North American Free Trade Agreement came into existence in 1994, the sector has undergone tremendous change: escalating concerns around climate change, advances in electric and automated vehicles, deindustrialization/reindustrialization, and the rise of low-cost locations as hubs for manufacturing. The North American Auto Industry since NAFTA examines the issues that have preoccupied the development of policy associated with the manufacture of automobiles in North America. The collection addresses the punctuations that have afflicted the industry since NAFTA's implementation as well as the slower, incremental evolutions that have also occurred. Several aspects of automobility and the industry are explored, including but not limited to the Canadian, American, and Mexican automotive sectors and their evolution and interaction under evolving trade regimes. The book analyses issues surrounding labour, technology, trade policy, regional development, the environment, and broader societal impacts of the automobile. It also draws on the expertise of a wide cross-section of industry experts and scholars to provide readers with a deeper understanding of the automotive industry and its central role in North America's economic, business, and political landscape.

Michigan Railway Company
Michigan Railway Company: The Northern and Southern Divisions, the first comprehensive history of the Michigan United Railway Company, traces the rise and fall of Michigan's most significant electric railway. This volume covers the company's founding in local rail-based public transportation systems in Lansing, Jackson, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and Owosso-Corunna and ends with its eventual demise, abandoned prior to the stock market crash of 1929. Norman L. Krentel follows the fragments of lines in lower Michigan, which came together to form the MUR. He examines the interurban lines, which were broken down into five divisions, each with a separate superintendent. These divisions were Northern and Southern, which had formerly been Michigan United Railways; Northwestern, which had been Grand Rapids, Holland, and Chicago Railway; Western; and Northeastern. This also explores how electric railway history is intertwined with the state of Michigan. The interurban electric rail system supported automobile manufacturing, allowing for the shipment of parts supplies, and finished automobiles through Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Major auto plants like REO and Oldsmobile had rail sidetracks served by Michigan Railway's interurban freight trains. Electric railway history is thus an essential, previously overlooked factor in Michigan's industrial development.
Autocourse Faces of Formula 1
AUTOCOURSE are proud to publish a fully revised English language edition of this book which showcases the stunning photography by Dr Benno Muller, a gifted amateur, who captured candid portraits of the racing drivers of the decade with his trusty Leica. To compliment the photos, Hartmut Lebrink, a veteran of more than 500 Grands Prix, has supplied beautifully crafted biographies which are bursting with insight on the drivers who risked their lives when the sport was incredibly dangerous. Within the pages of this book can be seen true heroes, masterfully captured by one of the best portrait photographers of that time. These men were then the leading and supporting actors, as well as a few extras, in that big and always exciting drama called Formula 1. We are not here considering any pecking order or hierarchy. Being a hero - that described every single one of them slipping into the fragile cars of that time and racing on one of the circuits of that time, putting his life at stake and, far too frequently, paying the highest price. AUTOCOURSE are planning to produce a series of companion volumes, with Faces of Formula 1: The Seventies already a work in progress.
Wisconsin Central
The Wisconsin Central was a dynamic regional railroad that served the upper Midwest from 1987-2001, known for its rapid growth, colorful locomotives, and eventual integration into Canadian National. The Wisconsin Central (WC) was a dynamic regional railroad that served the upper Midwest from 1987-2001. Despite lasting just short of fourteen years, WC packed a lot of changes and development into that time and repeatedly shook up the industry. We look at this colorful operation in all seasons and across the territory it served. WC employed a wide variety of second-hand locomotives, and they are depicted working a range of tasks around the system. The classy maroon and gold livery of WC is fondly remembered. Early and late versions of this paint scheme are shown. The routes of the WC were continually refined over the course of its existence through purchases of additional lines and whole RRs. These changes are covered in detail through text, maps, and photographs. The factors that set the stage for the creation and success of the WC are also discussed.Growth of the railroad is depicted right up to the last day when it became part of Canadian National. An epilogue provides updates on these routes after the independence of the WC ended.
London's Underground Since 1985
JIM BLAKE's second volume of his photographs featuring the London Underground cover the period from 1985, shortly after the Thatcher regime's destruction of London Transport and its re-birth as London Underground Ltd., to 2021 when the Northern Line gained its new branch from Kennington to Battersea Power Station. This was a turbulent time in the system's history, encompassing the withdrawal of the last pre-war passenger rolling stock (in 1988) and then the abolition of two-person operated trains at the beginning of 2000.With the exception of the Waterloo & City Line, which was transferred from British Rail to London Underground in the 1990s, all Underground lines are covered together with the rolling stock operating them.Jim's photographs concentrate on the older types. What is very striking in them is how the system seemed to be going downhill rapidly during the Thatcher years when this survey begins - plagued by the curse of graffiti and liberally littered thanks to cuts in staff who once dealt with such problems. Fortunately, since Transport for London's takeover of the Underground from 2000 onwards, things in that respect have markedly improved, trains and stations are much cleaner and therefore welcoming to passengers. The contrast between the late 1980s/early 1990s and today's Underground is very clear in Jim's photographs featured here, most previously unpublished. It is unfortunate that further improvements, not to mention long-planned extensions to the system, continue to be frustrated by government spending restrictions at the time of writing.
How the Railways Will Fix the Future
Railway engineer and transport policy specialist Gareth Dennis shows why the railways are key to the fight for a better world for us all. The world's railways were almost entirely created by capital and empire for extraction and exploitation, so what right do they have to exist and how can they be harnessed for good? Railway engineer and writer Gareth Dennis builds a case not simply for railways as a common good, but argues that railways are a critical tool for humanity to survive and thrive. Whether it's the power of organised labour, the threats and opportunities of new technology, the distribution of democratic power or the calamitous impacts of climate change, railways can act as a lens through which to understand the future and the part they can play in it. Dennis takes us across the globe, from Virgin Hyperloop's abandoned test track in the Nevada desert to the overcrowded stations of the North of England, exploring how railways can shape and inform choices about our future, and in turn detailing how taking a long-term view can help shape transport for the better. With his deep knowledge of railways and his unique view of history and politics, he equips us with the tools to answer those imperative questions: what and who should our railways be for?
Scania 112 & 142: At Work
In the eight years from 1980 when Scania introduced the 2-series trucks covered in Patrick Dyer's new book, they produced no less than 135,311 units. For much of that time the 142 held the title of the most powerful production truck in Europe. Why was this range so successful? One reason was that the Scania's advanced modular manufacturing system allowed it to cover weight categories from 16 to 174 tons without any special types. Operators could specify exactly the rigth truck for their needs and Scania's production and efficiency were streamlined. Scania got both the engineering and design just right, matching improved versions of their tried and tested running gear with new frames and a modern, class-leading cab designed by Italian stylist, Giorgetto Giugiaro. Scania 112 and 142 at Work is Patrick Dyer's seventh book in the series. Once more he has been able to draw on two hundred fine photographs, some from Scania's own archive, as well as working shots by truck enthusiasts.

The "Surf Line," a scenic rail route from Fullerton to San Diego, showcases diverse landscapes and busy traffic, featuring coastal views and upgraded locomotives like Siemens SC-44 Chargers. One of the most scenic rail lines in the United States is the former Santa Fe 4th District between Fullerton and San Diego, California. Known as the "Surf Line," this route operates through a variety of urban, suburban, agricultural, and even mountainous scenery. This line is most known for its coastal running at various locations between San Clemente and Del Mar, where the route operates along the Pacific Ocean. Today, this line's ownership is split between Orange County, North County (San Diego) Transit District (NCTD), San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), and the BNSF Railway. Amtrak, Metrolink, and NCTD's Coaster service operate passenger trains on various portions of the line, while BNSF operates local and freight service. Between these operators, this is a busy line with a heavy volume of traffic. For many years, the primary locomotives powering most passenger trains on this line were a variety of EMD F59s on Amtrak and Metrolink, and rebuilt F40s on Coaster. However, all three operators upgraded their power in recent years, with the State of California and NCTD opting for Siemens SC-44 Chargers and Metrolink purchasing EMD F125s. This book captures the last years of the older locomotives on this route.

Lines of Power
Written by John Buxton and Don Heath, two experienced rail professionals, Lines of Power delivers a comprehensive record of the stuttering progress of electrification and modernisation of Britain's railway network, exposing the furtive manoeuvring by competing factions within the railway industry during the 1950s. The book is highly critical of the excessive scepticism of the Department of Transport (DoT later DfT) and the frequent disproportionate, and often imprudent, interventions by politicians that have collectively thwarted the opportunity to progress a more comprehensive and cost effective 'rolling programme' of electrification.

The Wreck of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railway A Pioneering Railroad Undone by Greed and Fraud
This is the story of the Cincinnati, Hamilton & Dayton Railroad (later Railway) from its creation in 1846 until its demise in 1917. The book covers the operation, acquisitions, consolidations and ultimate loss of control to robber-barons. The CH&D's development from 1851 to 1917 was a prime factor in the growth of western Ohio's manufacturing centers and population. Ohio's major westernmost cities, Cincinnati, Dayton, and Toledo grew in size due to the easy access to raw materials and labor that flowed onto this road's iron, later steel rails. Other smaller Ohio cities along the road such as Hamilton, Middletown, Piqua, Lima, Findlay, Bowling Green, Chillicothe, and Ironton would feed major manufacturing centers with the materials and people that made the Midwest the industrial powerhouse of a nation. Originally built by men of vision to spur the development of the Great Miami River Valley, the railroad became the pawn of robber-barons and Wall Street bankers in 1882. Subsequently, a revolving door of rapacious owners and management would destroy the railroad from within by fraud and deceit.
Pontiac Performance 1960-1974
In an era before corporate average fuel economy (CAF?) requirements and emissions standards, a pioneering General Motors executive was tasked with taking over a dying division and returning it to profitability. In June 1956, Semon E. "Bunkie" Knudsen became the general manager of the Pontiac Motor Division. He injected the stodgy, boring product line with a large dose of performance. "Race on Sunday; sell on Monday" was Knudsen's philosophy. Although the idea of Pontiac getting into racing was far-fetched in 1956, Knudsen had a plan. In 1957, Pontiac released the Bonneville, which was a limited-edition, fuel-injected, high-performance convertible that was aimed directly at the burgeoning enthusiast market. Knudsen skillfully crafted a new youthful persona for Pontiac, and the sales began to climb. Pontiac's Super Duty factory-built drag cars produced an amazing line of winners. The performance mentality was clearly working, as Pontiac sales jumped to third place among the manufacturers--behind only Chevrolet and Ford. After GM ceased all racing activities in 1963, Pontiac hardly missed a beat. In 1964, the GTO was released, and a new market segment (the muscle car) was born, which sent the competition back to the drawing boards. In addition, Pontiac continued to create iconic muscle cars, including the 2+2, the Ram-Air GTO and Firebird, the Trans Am, the Judge, and the Firebird Formula. Re-live Pontiac's golden era with Pontiac Performance 1960-1974: The Era of the Super Duty, H.O., & Ram Air Drag & Muscle Cars!
Pink Cars and Pocketbooks
A fascinating history of how the automotive industry and consumers battled to define what women wanted in a car.Since the commercial introduction of the automobile, US automakers have always sought women as customers and advertised accordingly. How, then, did car culture become so masculine? In Pink Cars and Pocketbooks, Jessica Brockmole shares the untold history of women's relationship with automobiles: a journey marked by struggle, empowerment, and the relentless pursuit of independence. This groundbreaking work explores the evolution of women's automotive participation and the cultural shifts that have redefined their roles as drivers, mechanics, and consumers. Brockmole traces the rise of gendered marketing of automobiles over the course of the twentieth century. Auto companies created ads that conformed to commonly held ideas about women's relationships with automobiles. As the century progressed, marketing to women became less informative and even more gendered: the automotive industry portrayed women as passengers, props, or reluctant drivers, interested primarily in aesthetics. And yet, by the 1970s, female drivers were communicating directly with each other, forming clubs, and teaching each other through women-focused repair manuals. By examining market research studies, advertising archives, trade journals, women's magazines, newspapers, driving handbooks, and repair manuals, this book shows how women bought their way into the automobile and masculine car culture. Brockmole uncovers the stories of pioneering women who defied conventions, such as trailblazer Alice Ramsey, the first woman to drive across the United States in 1909, and Barb Wyatt, whose contributions to automotive manuals broke new ground. Women have always been users of technology, and this book illustrates how the auto industry evolved--as well as how it chose not to evolve--in response.
