Scouting for Boys

Ingram 出版
2024/12/03 出版

'A Scout is a Friend to all' An amalgam of imperial myth, borrowed tips on health and hygiene, and object lessons in woodcraft, the 1908 text of Robert Baden-Powell's Scouting for Boys is the original blueprint and 'self-instructor' of the Boy Scout Movement. One of the all-time bestsellers in the English-speaking world, this primer of 'yarns and pictures' constitutes probably the most influential manual for youth ever published. Yet the book is at the same time a roughly composed hodge-podge of jingoist lore and tracker legend, padded with lengthy quotations from adventure fiction and Baden-Powell's own autobiography, and seamed through with the multiple anxieties of its time: fears of degeneration, concerns about masculinity and self-restraint, and invasion paranoia. Elleke Boehmer's edition of Scouting for Boys reprints the original text and illustrations, and her fine introduction investigates a book that has been cited as an authority by militarists and pacifists, capitalists and environmentalists alike. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Country Journal and Old Man's Musings

Ingram 出版
2024/12/02 出版

In this collection of journal entries, poems, and short essays, author Ken Blomberg reflects on nature, aging, and the passage of time. Set in the beautiful wilds of Wisconsin, Ken's passion and respect for nature and man's interactions with it will captivate readers of all ages.Ken is a freelance writer and longtime resident of rural Junction City in north-central Wisconsin. His writing career can be traced back to the mid-70s while attending college at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Success in English courses prompted him to try his hand at freelance writing. After graduating and finding employment in his chosen field, he continued to write on the side. His first published article in a regional weekly outdoor newspaper landed him $4.80 back in 1979. Subsequently, he discovered he had a talent for putting words on paper, and that fact was acknowledged when articles were accepted by the likes of national magazines Field & Stream, Fur, Fish & Game, Pointing Dog Journal, Wing & Shot, and Ruffed Grouse Society's Drummer - as well as state publications like Wisconsin Sportsman, Badger Sportsman, and Woods and Waters. Writing was and still is his passion, and a day does not go by without it being on his agenda. He is the author of four books, Up the Creek, Wisconsin Bird Hunting Tales, Letters from Art, and most recently Country Journal and Old Man's Musings. For more than four decades, Ken has written a popular outdoor nature column, "Up the Creek," which ran for many years in several central Wisconsin weekly newspapers, including the Plover Profile, Manawa Advocate, and the Tomorrow River Times . In 2006, the column was picked up by Gannett Wisconsin Newspapers in the Stevens Point, Marshfield, and Wisconsin Rapids markets. In December 2010, he was asked by the editor of the Portage County Gazette to write his column for their weekly newspapers. Subsequently, it also became a quarterly piece for The Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation's Rural Route and the Wisconsin Rural Water Association's Rural Water Journal. Currently, it can be found on Facebook and Instagram. A 1976 graduate of UWSP in Resource Management, Ken served as Executive Director of the Wisconsin Rural Water Association for 25 years. Now retired, he continues to write and is currently working on his first novel, Chequamegon - Moon River . He and his wife Lynda currently own and operate a boarding kennel near Junction City.

The Arrival of the Fittest

Jim,Endersby  著
University 出版
2024/12/02 出版

In the early twentieth century, varied audiences took biology out of the hands of specialists and transformed it into mass culture, transforming our understanding of heredity in the process. In the early twentieth century communities made creative use of the new theories of heredity in circulation at the time, including the now largely forgotten mutation theory of Hugo de Vries. Science fiction writers, socialists, feminists, and utopians are among those who seized on the amazing possibilities of rapid and potentially controllable evolution. De Vries's highly respected scientific theory only briefly captured the attention of the scientific community, but its many fans appropriated it for their own wildly imaginative ends. Writers from H.G. Wells and Edith Wharton to Charlotte Perkins Gilman, J.B.S. Haldane, and Aldous Huxley created a new kind of imaginary future, which Jim Endersby calls the biotopia. It took the ambiguous possibilities of biology--utopian and dystopian--and reimagined them in ways that still influence the public's understanding of the life sciences. The Arrival of the Fittest recovers the fascinating, long-forgotten origins of ideas that have informed works of fiction from Brave New World to the X-Men movies, all while reflecting on the lessons--positive and negative--that this period might offer us.

The Call of the Honeyguide

Rob,Dunn  著
Basic Books 出版
2024/12/01 出版

A "soulful tribute" (New York Times) that shows how rethinking our relationships with other species can help us reimagine the future of humankind A New York Times Notable Book of the Year In the woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, sometime deep in our species' past, something strange happened: a bird called out, not to warn others of human presence, but to call attention to herself. Having found a beehive, that bird--a honeyguide--sought human aid to break in. The behavior can seem almost miraculous: How would a bird come to think that people could help her? Isn't life simply bloodier than that? As Rob Dunn argues in The Call of the Honeyguide, it isn't. Nature is red in tooth and claw, but in equal measure, life works together. Cells host even smaller life, wrapped in a web of mutual interdependence. Ants might go to war, but they also tend fungi, aphids, and even trees. And we humans work not just with honeyguides but with yeast, crops, and pets. Ecologists call these beneficial relationships mutualisms. And they might be the most important forces in the evolution of life. We humans often act as though we are all alone, independent from the rest of life. As The Call of the Honeyguide shows, we are not. It is a call to action for a more beneficent, less lonely future.

Carex of Illinois and Surrounding States

University o 出版
2024/11/30 出版

A common group of plants in the Midwest's natural areas, the oval sedges supply food for wildlife while their roots bind the soil and their vegetation creates habitat. Carex of Illinois and Surrounding States: The Oval Sedges offers a guide to the identification, distribution, and natural history of this diverse group of plants. Focused on the Carex section Cyperoideae, the editors cover Illinois' twenty-five species, every oval sedge in Indiana and Kentucky, and nearly every species in Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin. A two-step process helps users recognize the notoriously difficult-to-identify plants while illustrations and labeled photographs aid users in evaluating morphological characteristics. The editors also furnish first-ever distribution maps for Illinois' recently described species and varieties plus up-to-date maps for nearly every other species. Drawing on the study of thousands of specimens, Carex of Illinois and Surrounding States: The Oval Sedges is an invaluable resource for botanists, ecologists, environmental engineers, and professional and amateur environmentalists interested in a deeper understanding of these essential plants.

The Curious History of the Heart

Ingram 出版
2024/11/28 出版

Gold Award Winner, 2024 Nonfiction Book Awards Runner-up, 2024 History category, San Francisco Book Festival Runner-up, 2024 General Non-Fiction, New York Book Festival For much of recorded history, people considered the heart to be the most important organ in the body. In cultures around the world, the heart--not the brain--was believed to be the location of intelligence, memory, emotion, and the soul. Over time, views on the purpose of the heart have transformed as people sought to understand the life forces it contains. Modern medicine and science dismissed what was once the king of the organs as a mere blood pump subservient to the brain, yet the heart remains a potent symbol of love and health and an important part of our cultural iconography. This book traces the evolution of our understanding of the heart from the dawn of civilization to the present. Vincent M. Figueredo--an accomplished cardiologist and expert on the history of the human heart--explores the role and significance of the heart in art, culture, religion, philosophy, and science across time and place. He examines how the heart really works, its many meanings in our emotional and daily lives, and what cutting-edge science is teaching us about this remarkable organ. Figueredo considers the science of heart disease, recent advancements in heart therapies, and what the future may hold. He highlights the emerging field of neurocardiology, which has found evidence of a "heart-brain connection" in mental and physical health, suggesting that ancient views hold more truth than moderns suspect. Ranging widely and deeply throughout human history, this book sheds new light on why the heart remains so central to our sense of self.

Transgenics in Basic Education

Ingram 出版
2024/11/25 出版

Transgenics is a recurring subject in social, economic, scientific and ethical discussions. From this perspective, given the topicality and relevance of the issue, there is an increasing demand for society to understand and know how to position itself in relation to it. School is therefore the place where citizens should learn scientific knowledge on the subject. However, research into science education has shown that there is still a huge gap in society's knowledge of transgenics, leading to mistaken opinions and interpretations. In this way, this study sought to investigate how primary school students in a municipality located in the Amazon region understand transgenics. Come and see the results!

A collection of beautiful and moving essays on the wonder of the natural world and the cultural complexities of writing landscape in AustraliaWords are Eagles collects in one place the essays of award-winning novelist and nature writer, Gregory Day. Grounded in the landscape of southwestern Victoria, and infused with the heightened sense of place and environmental literacy that have long been key to Day's work, these essays traverse landscape, language and histories.Day's attention is tuned both to beauty of the natural world, returning often to the motifs of ground and sky, ocean and owl, moth and river, and the history of place - whether lost, buried or personal. In a part a reading and celebration of the resurgent global nature writing movement, to which Day was an early contributor, this collection highlights the need for ecological care and value of Indigenous knowledge and practices. This is the kind of nature writing that gets to the heart of our urgent need for a more harmonious and regenerative relationship with the earth that sustains us

Criticizing Science

Myrna,Perez  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/21 出版

How Stephen Jay Gould's career illustrates that criticizing science is important for American democracy. The question of public trust in science feels newly urgent, but today is not the first time that opposing ends of the American political spectrum have critiqued modern science. This dynamic has historical roots in the early 1970s, when critiques of science emerged simultaneously out of Civil Rights, feminist, and decolonization movements on the left, as well as within the creationism of the Christian Right. In Criticizing Science, Myrna Perez follows the public career of evolutionary biologist, political leftist, and anti-creationist Stephen Jay Gould during the final decades of the American twentieth century. Gould believed that denaturalizing scientific objectivity could be part of the greater work of racial and gender justice in the United States. Perez shows the promises and limitations of Gould's view--most famously expressed in his 1981 book The Mismeasure of Man--that the collective self-reflection on the history of scientific bias would lead to a better, less oppressive science. She argues that we must instead contend with the radical possibilities that are opened by working for a resolutely democratic science. By centering Gould, Perez clarifies divides among left, liberal, and right-wing movements over evolutionary science during the rise of the Christian Right and the expansion of academic feminism. These divides continue to shape contemporary debates over climate change, vaccines, abortion policy, and the nature of gender in present-day American politics.

Curiosity Unleashed

Derek,Eamus  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/19 出版

This book tackles 12 simple questions in 12 chapters. After answering the initial question (for example, are viruses alive, why does ice float, why is the sky blue and grass green, and why doesn't the Moon fall to Earth due to Earth's gravity?), each chapter dives into an array of topics that explore new weird and wonderful linkages based on those 12 answers. For example, after answering the question "are viruses alive?" I explore the likely origin of COVID-19. After answering the question "why does ice float?" I discuss what life would be like on Earth if ice didn't float and I discuss why Earth has been almost entirely covered in snow and ice several times in the geological past. After examining the question "why is grass green?", I show the remarkable similarities between the structure of chlorophyll in leaves, haemoglobin in human blood and the nodules on roots of legumes (peas and beans, for example). After answering the question "why doesn't the Moon fall to Earth due to Earth's gravity?", I show what would happen if the Moon did fall to Earth, and discuss the link between tides and jellyfish. This chapter also shows what happened when large meteorites hit Earth in the past, including the extinction of dinosaurs. After answering the question "what makes Earth's magnetic field?" I show how the N and S magnetic poles are forever wandering around and discuss how the N and S magnetic poles can, and do, flip so that the N magnetic pole becomes the S magnetic pole. I also discuss the importance of Earth's magnetic field to all of life on Earth - especially to Humans, and how human evolution may have been affected by changes in the strength of Earth's magnetic field. In the last two chapters of the book I discuss the difference between weather and climate, the relationship between changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and surface temperature, and specifically address the question: Is the Science of Climate Change Settled? Spoiler alert - it certainly is not.

On the Structure of Complex Networks

Daniel,Grady  著
Lulu.com 出版
2024/11/15 出版

Large-scale complex networks in natural, social, and technological systems exhibit an abundance of rich information, and extracting meaningful structural features from network data is one of the most challenging tasks in network theory. Nonetheless, understanding these networks is essential to explaining phenomena in transportation, epidemiology, sociology, economics, and other fields. This book presents three novel analyses of large-scale empirical networks. First, a comparison of two world-wide transportation systems reveals many statistical similarities despite extremely different operational and geographic constraints. Second, we develop a new method for determining geographic borders based on human mobility. Finally, we demonstrate how measuring networks in terms of shortest-path trees can identify a robust network skeleton, and its relevance in predicting dynamical processes. Nature on Paper

Ingram 出版
2024/11/15 出版

Over the past two decades, natural things--especially those collected, exchanged, studied, and displayed in museums, such as animals, plants, minerals, and rocks--have emerged as fascinating protagonists for historical research. Nature on Paper follows a different, humbler set of objects that make it possible to trace the global routes and shifting meanings of those natural things: the catalogs, inventories, and other paper tools of information management that form the backbone of collection institutions. Anne Greenwood MacKinney focuses on Prussia from the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth century, a place and time that witnessed the dramatic restructuring of research, government, and public collections toward a closer integration of science, state, and a proto-civil society. The documents at the heart of her study are mediators actively shaping the historical trajectories, values, and meanings of the objects they record, and with pasts and paths of their own. MacKinney also reveals how various stakeholders--in the research community, museum sector, government, and general public--can interact with these documents and thereby shape the world of natural science. By centering the history of natural historical collection paperwork and the agents involved in its production, circulation, and safekeeping, Nature on Paper tells a largely neglected story of a form of scientific labor that transformed the infrastructure of modern research at the turn of the nineteenth century.

Consciousness Influences Epigenetics in the Development of Disease

Ingram 出版
2024/11/14 出版

Body and soul belong together -A healthy soul in a healthy body. If we do not listen to the soul, the body begins to speak. At a scientific conference in Tucson, Ingrid Fredriksson's study on how our consciousness affects our epigenetics - indeed our whole life - received an excellent reception - from universities worldwide to individual researchers. "This must be spread all over the world," it said. All help is needed for this. This book is about what we can't see but which affects our whole life, how epigenetics regulates our gene activity, which genes are switched on or off: in a certain cell type, various disease states, or response to a physiological or psychological stimulus. Special attention is paid to the study of how emotions affect health. Being subjected to physical or mental abuse stresses you out and affects your health. Depressed and stressed people have a shorter lifespan, here we get the answer to how negative emotions affect our consciousness and epigenetics. Sometimes it can be years of mental stress, sometimes it's an unhappy childhood that causes ill health. By thinking and focusing on the positive, we not only become happier, but we live longer. The results of Fredriksson's study -most likely the first of its kind - show how epigenetics work in practice, in our daily lives, and how health and illness depend on our consciousness and emotions, something that everyone - not least our doctors - must be told. www.ingridfredriksson.com

Stellar Gods & Evolution - Vedic & Puranic Astrobiology

Ingram 出版
2024/11/13 出版

Gravity mediates consciousness and creates matter. Hydrogen cyanide gives rise to prebiotic synthesis of lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, porphyrins and nucleic acids which can all self-assemble to form self-replicating prions, viruses, lipid organisms and carbohydrate organisms. Hydrogen cyanide acts as an interactomic molecule which produces the primitive cell or nanoarchaea. They can form prokaryotes and eukaryotes which can evolve into primates. The nanoarchaea can symbiose to form symbiotic tissue organism networks with metallic cyanide and hydrogen cyanide as neurotransmitters which can get organized to form planets and stars. The earth's orbit around the sun as well as solar flares changes the earth's geomagnetic fields contributing to global warming and evolution of life on earth. The nanoarchaea evolving out of prebiotic synthesis from hydrogen cyanide symbiosed into eukaryotic forms. The egg laying dinosaurs sequentially evolved into primate dinosaurs and primate humans. The stellar galaxies function like a biological organism in communication with the human brains. This is indicative of stellar gods and multifocal evolution of life seen in Vedic and Puranic Astrobiology.

Hydrogen cyanide acts as the neurotransmitter of consciousness and mitochondria can sense gravity or God. The story of Dasavatar is the story of human evolution and Vedic biology. Gondwanaland and Lemuria in the Southern ocean is the cradle of civilisation and the Dasavatar indicates human evolution. This substantiates the evolution of mammals from reptiles and the sequential evolution of egg laying dinosaurs to placental warm-blooded cortical bipedal dinosaurs and Homo neanderthalis the Lord Varaha and Narasimha. The Homo neanderthalis on hibernation evolved into Homo floresiensis and later Homo sapiens as indicated by Vamana.

Galileo and the Almagest, C.1589-1592

Ivan,Malara  著
Palgrave M 出版
2024/11/13 出版

This book offers a groundbreaking exploration of Galileo Galilei's engagement with the Almagest, Claudius Ptolemy's second-century scientific work on the motions of stars and planetary paths. Contrary to the belief that Galileo had little interest in Ptolemaic astronomy, the author investigates whether Ptolemy influenced Galileo's shift to Copernicanism, the theory that Earth and all other planets revolve around the Sun. This inquiry is pursued through a detailed examination of Galileo's early writings on motion, namely the so-called De motu antiquiora (c. 1589-1592). By contextualizing Galileo's initial reception of Ptolemy, the book reveals a fascinating historical backdrop, highlighting how the Almagest was intended to be read and studied in Galileo's milieu during the last decades of the sixteenth century. The author challenges the conventional 'Ptolemaic-Aristotelian' label by showing that early Galileo adhered to a Ptolemaic, yet non-Aristotelian, cosmology supported by an Archimedean-like rationale. Additionally, the book underscores the often-overlooked impact of Theon of Alexandria's commentary on the Almagest in the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century reception of Ptolemy, suggesting it as one of Galileo's potential sources. Offering valuable insights for historians of science and early modern astronomy, this book illuminates Galileo's intricate relationship with astronomical and philosophical ideas, emphasizing the need to re-examine his intellectual journey within a nuanced historical framework.

Characteristic study of an HDPE-based composite material

Emna,Zouaoui  著
Ingram 出版
2024/11/13 出版

Natural fibers have recently attracted the attention of scientists due to their characteristics: low cost, low density, renewable, biodegradable and non-corrosive. In this work, we prepared and investigated the properties of high-density polyethylene matrix composites reinforced with plant fibers leaf of prickly cactus. To study the effect of fiber content (5%, 15%, 25%) on composite quality, physical, morphological and mechanical analyses were carried out on the various materials produced. The results obtained show that these composite materials exhibit good rigidity, a reduction in density and slight brittleness, making them brittle.

Hierarchies

2024/11/12 出版

The Max Planck Society (MPG), one of the most successful research institutions worldwide, serves as a prime example of the German science system, in which hierarchies and relations of dependency play a major role. This body stands center stage in the present book, which analyzes processes of socio-cultural and structural transformation at the MPG during the first fifty years of its existence-from the non-transparent interdependencies typical of informal networks to a modern research institution geared towards gender equality policy. Two women's working worlds within this research organization are analyzed through a cultural history and history-of-science lens. One of them, science, was long closed to all but a tiny number of women. The other was the office, where most women in this context worked most of the time. What promoted female scientific careers at the MPG, what obstructed them, and what role did the Harnack Principle, the MPG's own structural principle of the personality-centered organization of research, play in these processes? The book also foregrounds the negotiation of gender equality processes beginning in the late 1980s, which helped break down the traditional gender order and trigger a cultural shift at the Max Planck Society.

Physics Notes for Advanced Level

Lulu.com 出版
2024/11/11 出版

This book grew out of notes and personal lesson plans used at Harrison College, Barbados, while teaching Advanced Level (A-Level) Physics, from 1986-1991. The notes, at the teacher's discretion, are designed for a 1 or 2 year course at A-Level, contingent on how much material (including special topics in the Appendix) is incorporated. The text also offers an abundance of enrichment material to challenge students to strive for a higher level than the standard syllabus criteria warrants. Teachers (and students), of course, are free to pursue this or not. This book is not claimed to embody or represent all of the particulars or individual elements of the current A-Level examinations syllabi but it will certainly meet many of the requirements for both A- and AS-level Cambridge Physics, as well as many criteria for the comparable Caribbean (CXC) Physics Examinations. It can also serve as a useful supplement to any university Calculus Physics sequence. In this enlarged version I have provided a special Appendix (III), covering model C.A.P.E. (Caribbean A-Level) problems from past papers and selected solutions in mechanics, optics, E&M and modern physics. In Appendix IV, will be found selected problem solutions from most of the chapters in this text. Appendix V is a letter from the then M.I.T. administrator thanking me for my work which earned one of my Harrison College student's special praise.
