Citrus

Thames & H 出版
2024/11/08 出版

Citrus traces the history of today's global superfood from its cultivation in the ancient world from just a handful of original wild species, via Arab trade routes, the noble collectors of medieval Europe, imperial conquerors on the high seas, and merchants betting on the highest-value fruit crop ever known. The story of citrus permeates human history, as recorded in the literature and art of civilizations from antiquity to the present day. When Alexander the Great's army swept over the Persian Empire, they found the citron: the first citrus fruit known in the West. During the Napoleonic wars, British ships carried lemons and limes to protect their sailors against scurvy; the "Limeys" ruled the waves. As the citrus trade grew in importance in the nineteenth century, the Sicilian Mafia was established among citrus farmers, protecting their crops and their livelihoods.Mandarin, citron, pomelo, bergamot, kumquat--a glorious abundance of citrus fruits has delighted and stimulated ancient thinkers and explorers, Arab geographers and scientists, European royalty, artists, physicians, and plant breeders. From the art of the Renaissance to modern advertising and graphic design, this richly illustrated, invigorating cultural history reveals how these extraordinary, life-giving fruits have flavored, scented, healed, and colored our world.

Insects and Colors Between Art and Natural History

V E,Mandrij  著
Brill 出版
2024/11/08 出版

This book explores how European naturalists and artists perceived, investigated, and presented the relationship between insects and colors from the late sixteenth to the late eighteenth century. The contributors to this volume examine the creative methods and strategies that were developed to record color-related information about insects through studies on Hoefnagel's glazed metal and hand-coloring practices; the lepidochromy technique used in paintings by Marseus van Schriek and later naturalists; the representation of sexual dimorphism of color and variable color of caterpillars in the images of Goedaert, Merian, Albin, and R繹sel von Rosenhof; the painting-by-numbers technique applied to Sch瓣ffer's bookplates on Regensburg insects; Schifferm羹ller's watercolor originals of caterpillars; and finally, the color fading of exotic cabinet specimens and how this issue was tackled by Abbot and Smith. The volume is lavishly illustrated with rare and unpublished images and offers new insights into the interrelation between natural history and visual practices concerning the color of insects, with a special focus on butterflies and moths. Contributors are Harald Bruckner, Kay Etheridge, Beth Fowkes Tobin, Stefanie Jovanovic-Kruspel, Karin Leonhard, V.E. Mandrij, Kimberly Schenck, Stacey Sell, Giulia Simonini, and Friedrich Steinle.

Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis among Children in Africa

Ingram 出版
2024/11/07 出版

Soil-transmitted helminths infections remain a common public health concern among children in developing tropical countries and these parasitic infections are highly prevalent in Africa. The problem is predominant among children, and is often associated with poor growth, reduced physical activity, impaired cognitive function and learning ability. This study was conducted to provide information upon investigation of infection by evaluating the prevalence of soil transmitted helminths infection based on gender and age among children of Blessed Hope and Faith Orphanage in Calabar-South, Cross River State, Nigeria. This study investigates the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminths infections among children at an orphanage in Nigeria, revealing a 100% infection rate among the sampled population. The findings highlight the urgent need for improved sanitary facilities, provision of deworming drugs, and promotion of proper hygiene practices to address this public health concern.

The Miraculous from the Material

Pantheon B 出版
2024/11/07 出版

A gorgeously illustrated exploration of the science behind the universe's most stunning natural phenomena--from atoms and parameciums to rainbows, snowflakes, spider webs, the rings of Saturn, galaxies, and more Nature is capable of extraordinary phenomena. Standing in awe of those phenomena, we experience a feeling of connection to the cosmos. For acclaimed physicist and novelist Alan Lightman, just as remarkable is that all of what we see around us--soap bubbles, scarlet ibises, shooting stars--are made out of the same material stuff and obey the same rules and laws. This is what Lightman calls "spiritual materialism," the belief that we can embrace spiritual experiences without letting go of our scientific worldview. Pairing 36 beautiful, full-color photos evoking some of nature's most awe-inspiring phenomena with accessible and lyrical personal essays, The Miraculous from the Material explores the fascinating science underlying the natural world. Why do rainbows make an arc? Why does a particular waterfall at Yosemite National Park sometimes glow like it's on fire? How does a hummingbird fly? The world has so many things to marvel at--and the science is just as fascinating. Lightman's imagination travels from the world of atoms and molecules to the animal kingdom, from places like Ha Long Bay, Vietnam and the Grand Canyon out to the solar system and beyond, illuminating the majesty of the cosmos and the remarkable science behind it. The Miraculous from the Material is a stunning, soaring ode to the beauty and wonder around us, and the perfect holiday gift for photography aficionados, life-long learners, and admirers of the natural world.

In Search of Lost Liveliness

Ingram 出版
2024/11/06 出版

In this eco-philosophical epistolary dialogue, the two authors engage in a captivating dialogue about the pre-civilisation foundations of our culture, about processes of alienation and about how we could (re)realise a being-with-nature. Many profound questions are posed: What have we actually lost by leaving nature? What does a 'disenchanted' world mean and what could be a core of animism that needs to be preserved? What role do structures of domination and power play in the loss of our connection to nature? Can we reduce our loss of the world and deepen our trust in nature? Does the path lead via visions and borderline experiences? Do we need religions and rituals? Or are opening our hearts and being able to let go more important?

Brainworms

Ingram 出版
2024/11/06 出版

What is a brainworm? The word evokes possibilities; is it perhaps like an earthworm, tilling the soil and making it more fertile? Or perhaps a parasite, harvesting from an organism without care for its host's health and well-being? The brainworm could well be a new revelation: what mysteries might be contained within a book entitled Brainworms...and Other Surprises at the Margins of the Impossible? Brainworms, a series of essays, reveals the rumblings and grumblings of an unsatiable mind confronted with infinite possibilities. Ranging from topics in clinical medicine through to its underlying molecular biology and to radiation sciences and astronomy, Brainworms contains insight and wonder about the world we live in. Chronic curiosity and scientific investigation combine to reveal often surprising connections between such unlikely combinations as Galileo's boredom, chaos, and mental health. Or consider the relationship of fifteenth-century troubadours to modern treatment of breast cancer. Perhaps the ties among honey bees, space exploration, and epigenetics are more to your interest. Possibly, you are more intrigued by linkages of sheep to muscle memory and the microbiome.Skillfully written, in a style reminiscent of nineteenth century writers and thinkers, Brainworms is an eclectic collection of short essays along a broad topical front that was inspired by the author's observations of life in a diverse set of scientific fields. This delightful volume documents the unexpected avenues that our brains can take in their quest to explain and appreciate the grandeur of the universe and the exciting discoveries within it. Totally unpredictable and always captivating, Brainworms offers thought-provoking insight and stimulation to the scientific and unscientific alike.

Education for Sustainable Development

Ingram 出版
2024/11/05 出版

This research investigates the use of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as an alternative for reducing food waste in a full-time state school in the state of Amap獺, Brazil. This is a qualitative-quantitative study, in which we monitored the preparation and distribution of meals at the school under investigation, by weighing them. This took place in two stages: before and after the application of a Thematic Workshop. The workshop, entitled 'Clean Plate', was based on ESD assumptions. After the workshop, a Perception Questionnaire was administered to the research subjects. Come and see the results of this study and find out if food loss has decreased after the workshop, or if nothing has changed in the reality experienced! It's important to emphasise that the ESD perspective has been gaining followers around the world. And encouraging this kind of thinking in a region as rich in biodiversity as the Amazon is necessary!

Nuts and Bolts

Roma,Agrawal  著
W. W. Norton 出版
2024/11/05 出版

Some of humanity's mightiest engineering achievements are small in scale--and, without them, the complex machinery on which our modern world runs would not exist. In Nuts and Bolts, structural engineer Roma Agrawal examines seven of these extraordinary elements: the nail, the wheel, the spring, the magnet, the lens, the string, and the pump.Tracing the evolution from Egyptian nails to modern skyscrapers, and Neanderthal string to musical instruments, Agrawal shows us how even our most sophisticated items are built on the foundations of these ancient and fundamental breakthroughs. She explores an array of intricate technologies--dishwashers, spacesuits, microscopes, suspension bridges, breast pumps--making surprising connections, explaining how they work, and using her own hand-drawn illustrations to bring complex principles to life.Alongside deeply personal experiences, she recounts the stories of remarkable--and often uncredited--scientists, engineers, and innovators from all over the world, and explores the indelible impact these creators and their creations had on society. In preindustrial Britain, nails were so precious that their export to the colonies was banned--and women were among the most industrious nail makers. The washing machine displayed at an industrial fair in Chicago in 1898 was the only machine featured that was designed by a woman. The history of the wheel, meanwhile, starts with pottery, and takes us to India's independence movement, where making clothes using a spinning wheel was an act of civil disobedience.Eye-opening and engaging, Nuts and Bolts reveals the hidden building blocks of our modern world, and shows how engineering has fundamentally changed the way we live.

The effects of physicochemical parameters of water on anopheles larvae

Ingram 出版

This study was written for the award of Masters of Philosophy in Entomology at the Copperbelt University. My work was inspired by the number of malaria cases report in that district. I have been passionate about research in the field of Entomology and malaria research in particular. The Africa has been struggling with this problem of malaria for a long time and a lot of resources have been channeled in this field, however, the solution seems far fetched. I believe if we can focus our energy and resources in research that looks at understanding the abiotic factors in which these vectors are found.

Ripples of Change

Ingram 出版
2024/11/03 出版

Namibia, among the driest countries in sub-Saharan Africa, faces extreme scarcity and fragility in its water resources. The central region relies on ephemeral streams, contributing 22% of surface water during the rainy season. The Otjiseru River, upstream of the Swakopoort Dam, is crucial for Windhoek's water supply. Monitoring its water quality is vital to mitigate ecological impacts and prevent waterborne diseases. This research informs policymakers, water management institutions, and stakeholders about water quality status and land use impact, aiding holistic water resource protection. It enhances communication on river pollution, improves data collection, and identifies major pollutants for corrective action, thus enhancing social well-being and productivity. This study also assesses the effectiveness of current water quality laws in managing pollution.

Environmental Education

Ingram 出版
2024/11/03 出版

Environmental education is a set of educational processes, school-based or not, in which individuals and the community seek skills, social values and competences in pursuit of environmental conservation and the quality of life of all individuals and their surroundings. This manuscript aims to present a contextualisation of environmental education, showing the faces and possibilities of a possible practice in the school (formal) and out-of-school (informal) contexts, as well as its characteristics and origins. It will deal with the initial concepts and introduction to environmental education, the approach to environmental preservation in the school context, sustainability and recycling in question, the role of the consumer and the future, environmental education and the treatment of effluents, environmental education as a subsidy for the conservation of the cerrado environmental education and the preservation of the cerrado. The discussion does not end with the presentation proposed here, because the search for knowledge about Environmental Education is broad and cyclical. This work is recommended for the community in general, as well as students, teachers of basic and higher education, and environmental researchers.

Ideas on sustainability

Ingram 出版
2024/11/03 出版

Sustainability is a central issue in contemporary times and has been the subject of studies and research in various fields of knowledge, including education. In our work, we sought to answer the following research questions: in what terms do primary school students have a critical understanding of what sustainability is? What dimensions are presented in the enunciation of ideas about sustainability? The analyses revealed that the students' ideas about sustainability were associated with concern for the environment. This apprehension was certainly favoured by the context surrounding the current environmental crisis. However, other dimensions, even in association, were incorporated into the understanding of what sustainability is, entering the field of complexity. Nowadays, the issue of sustainability has emerged as a topic that should be favoured in the classroom environment, particularly in order to present and discuss the aspects involved in a development model that has proved harmful to both society and the environment.

Gaia and Philosophy

2024/11/02 出版

In the 1970s, microbiologist Lynn Margulis and atmospheric chemist James Lovelock developed the Gaia theory. Embracing the circular logic of life and engineering systems, the Gaia theory states that Earth is a self-regulating complex system in which life interacts with and eventually becomes its own environment. Gaia describes a living Earth: a body in the form of a planet. Fusing science, mathematics, philosophy, ecology and mythology, *Gaia and Philosophy*, with a new introduction by Dorion Sagan, challenges Western anthropocentrism to propose a symbiotic planet. In its striking philosophical conclusion, the revolutionary Gaia paradigm holds important implications not only for understanding life's past but for shaping its future.

How the Climate Crisis Can Be Solved

Ingram 出版
2024/10/27 出版

The basic thinking error with the usual methods of trying to imitate the fusion processes on the Sun and the other stars is that they consider the Sun as an ordinary ball of gas. A ball filled with hydrogen, helium and many other gases. But it is not like that. It is not gravity and temperature that are decisive. The sun and the other stars are plasma balls or plasma spheres filled with an electrically conducting plasma that swirls, creates sunspots (the sun's own "black holes"), electric currents, that circulate, flame...which causes deuterium, tritium, etc. can constantly clash and collide. And thanks to these ongoing processes also being catalysed, controlled and regulated fusion processes are created that produce the heat and light we can constantly see coming from the sun. We can imitate these processes here on Earth if we learn to control and regulate the fusion with the help of catalysts and computers!

The World as We Know It

Peter-Dear  著
Princeton 出版
2024/10/27 出版

From the award-winning author of Revolutionizing the Sciences, a monumental historical account of how we came to see the world through the lens of science Science is the basis of our assumptions about ourselves and our world, from ideas about our evolutionary past to our conceptions of the vast expanses of space and the smallest particles of matter. In this panoramic book, acclaimed historian of science Peter Dear uncovers the roots of such beliefs, revealing how they constitute a natural philosophy that has been developed and refined over the course of centuries--and how the world as we have come to know it was by no means inevitable. In a sweeping, multifaceted narrative, Dear describes some of the most breathtaking accomplishments in the advance of human knowledge, such as Isaac Newton's laws of motion and gravitation, Carl Linnaeus's taxonomy, Antoine Lavoisier's new chemistry, Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, and Albert Einstein's theories of relativity. Challenging the notion that science is only about "making discoveries," he shows how our world has been formed by people, institutions, and cultural assumptions, giving rise to disciplines ranging from biology and astrophysics to electromagnetism and the social sciences. Taking readers from the early eighteenth century to today, The World as We Know It reveals how our ideas about our place in the universe were bequeathed to us by individuals, cultures, and a curiosity that knows no bounds.

In the industrial age, with the global proliferation of concrete dam technology, people started to demand more from rivers, particularly when required for electricity production. Yet hydropower projects are always more than a technological engineering enterprise, layered with political, social, and environmental meaning. Through an examination of specific hydroelectric power projects, the activities of engineers, and the experience of local communities and species, Ding offers a fresh perspective on twentieth-century China from environmental and technological perspectives.

Meteorology in the service of health

Ingram 出版
2024/10/23 出版

Malaria is a major health problem in Senegal. Given the seasonality of the disease, the development of decision-support tools such as models to predict the occurrence of malaria epidemics would be of paramount importance in the fight against the disease. Thus, the present study contributes to a better understanding of the relationship between climate and malaria in order to improve the surveillance and management of this disease. The study was carried out in the Ziguinchor region using data covering an eight (08) year period, from 2015 to 2022. Two types of monthly data were used, namely meteorological data and health data (number of confirmed cases of malaria). The methodology adopted consisted of graphical analysis, simple linear regression and multiple linear regression. The most relevant parameters were selected using the "backward elimination" method. Finally, the model was validated using four (04) statistical tests (Shapiro-Wilk test, variance inflation factor test, Durbin-Watson test and Goldef-Quandt test), followed by a robustness check using the Taylor diagram.

How Whiteness Claimed the Future

Ingram 出版
2024/10/22 出版

Interested in the ideological workings of fiction, I study how major avant-garde tropes promote the potential of permanent renewal as white America's property. Renewal ties to the capacities to create, progress, transcend, and simply be. From Black critique we know that, within dominant discourse, all these capacities have been denied to Black bodies ever since colonization. Black work has been fetishized, appropriated, stolen, and dismissed in and by dominant culture, while Black being is construed as negativity and barred on the level of ontology. It follows then that racialization operates on multiple levels in the conceptual frame of renewal. I study this conceptualization by re-reading the works of and criticism on progressive white authors. I examine how images of renewal enable the claim on futurity, transformative potential, and movement forward as exclusively white properties. Premised on oppositions between positive capacities and a state of complete incapacitation, these images are often viewed as separate constructions. This project shows that, deriving from white ideology, such representations are symbiotic and simultaneous - the "good" story of white renewal rests on the continual transgression towards Black being.

Leave No Stone Unturned

Ingram 出版
2024/10/22 出版

In Leave No Stone Unturned, the author seeks to heighten the readers' attentiveness to their natural environs through her weekly reflections. Each reflection explores the meaning beyond a phenomenon in the natural world. Drawn into the author's close relationship with nature, the everyday becomes exceptional. The animals, the plants, the elements, and her connection with nature challenge the readers to consider more deeply their own experiences. Organized into four sections-one for each season, the book includes fifty-two reflections. As a nature lover, the author writes in nature journals, produces artwork and photography-all to reflect her keen vantage point. The reader is invited to contemplate one reflection and its corresponding image each week of each season for the year. Enjoy! There is no such thing as total silence. However, there is, if one seeks it, a space of quietude. Nature at its best. Carolyn Velletri's writings resonate with her personal, intimate relationship within this sphere. Leave No Stone Unturned, Carolyn's compilation of reflections, draws one into this special place, and heightens the senses to the bountiful beauty of the gift of nature. - Michelle Galea Stover

Local Community Involvement in Bali Ecotourism Management

Ingram 出版
2024/10/19 出版

In the case of Indonesia, most of the tourist attractions offered and advertised are national parks or protected forests. They are protected for preservation, not for advertising to attract large numbers of visitors. There is often a gap between the ideal and the reality. Good ecotourism management is believed to mediate the two interests. This study aims to determine the management of ecotourism destinations to create local small businesses related to five ecotourism destinations namely West Bali National Park, Lake Buyan Area, Batur Geopark Museum, Mangrove Denpasar Bali, and Lembongan Mangrove. This research includes surveys, direct observation, interviews, literature review, and literature analysis. Data were collected through surveys and observations at ecotourism destinations in Bali. By providing management opportunities, community income can be increased through the establishment of small businesses related to ecotourism potential, thus increasing incentives to participate in ecotourism management.

Eating and Being

University 出版
2024/10/19 出版

What we eat, who we are, and the relationship between the two. Eating and Being is a history of Western thinking about food, eating, knowledge, and ourselves. In modern thought, eating is about what is good for you, not about what is good. Eating is about health, not about virtue. Yet this has not always been the case. For a great span of the past--from antiquity through about the middle of the eighteenth century--one of the most pervasive branches of medicine was known as dietetics, prescribing not only what people should eat but also how they should order many aspects of their lives, including sleep, exercise, and emotional management. Dietetics did not distinguish between the medical and the moral, nor did it acknowledge the difference between what was good for you and what was good. Dietetics counseled moderation in all things, where moderation was counted as a virtue as well as the way to health. But during the nineteenth century, nutrition science began to replace the language of traditional dietetics with the vocabulary of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and calories, and the medical and the moral went their separate ways. Steven Shapin shows how much depended upon that shift, and he also explores the extent to which the sensibilities of dietetics have been lost. Throughout this rich history, he evokes what it felt like to eat during another historical period and invites us to reflect on what it means to feel about food as we now do. Shapin shows how the change from dietetics to nutrition science fundamentally altered how we think about our food and its powers, our bodies, and our minds.

Reconfigurations of the Bildungsroman

Ingram 出版
2024/10/18 出版

The present work deals with the representation of trauma and violence in coming-of-age stories written by African-American and Afro-Caribbean women authors in the United States. The kinds of violence explored in this work are related to the post-colonial condition the women protagonists experience, in which racism, sexism, classism, among other kinds of discrimination, are co-created in an intersectional experience of oppression. The titles analyzed in this work are: Lucy (1990), written by Jamaica Kincaid; Breath, Eyes, Memory (1994), written by Edwidge Danticat; Bone Black - Memories of Girlhood (1996), written by bell hooks; and God Help the Child (2015), written by Toni Morrison. The Bildungsroman genre serves as the form with which the authors are able to display the different forms of violence experienced during the the process of growing up female and black in the United States, and also in the Caribbean islands of Antigua and Haiti, in the cases of Kincaid and Danticat respectively. The coming-of-age stories written by women, and more specifically by African-American and Afro-Caribbean women, tend to showcase narratives in which the tensions between the protagonists' self-determination and the influence of social and cultural factors in their development opportunities are negotiated. The genre is adapted and subverted by the authors, deviating from its canonical European origins, becoming a site in which the authors are able to represent different kinds of violence, and the subsequent traumatic consequences caused by it.
