On or near the ground, volcanic ash can reduce visibility, make surfaces slippery, cause roofs to collapse, damage crops and wild plants, clog ventilation systems, corrode metal, contaminate water supplies, irritate or damage eyes, and pose a risk to people with respiratory problems. Study of soil erosion trends
The aim of the present work is to estimate annual soil losses in the Boussellam watershed in northeastern Algeria, using the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), the Geographic Information System (GIS), and remote sensing. The RUSLE model was used to model the main factors involved in the erosion phenomenon. The Boussellam watershed covers an area of 4,151 Km2, with an elongated shape and low relief. It is characterized by an altitude ranging from 189 m to 1757 m, with an average of 931 m, and a slope oscillating between 0 and 266%, with an average of 18%. The results show that the erosivity factor R averages 68 (MJ.mm/ha.h.yr), with a maximum value of 140 (MJ.mm/ha.h.yr). The soil erodibility factor K ranges from 0.04 to 0.21, with an average of 0.11 (t.h.ha)/(MJ.ha.mm). The topographical factor LS ranges from 0 to 216, with an average of 16. The average value of the P factor is 0.77, and that of the C factor is 0.076.
New directions for experimental lessons in science teaching
Investigative experimental activities have become an extremely important strategy in the teaching-learning process in science education, as they enable concepts to be learnt and important skills to be developed. Based on these assumptions, this paper presents an experience report on investigative experimental activities in a public school in Nova Floresta - PB. The work was carried out with students from two 7th grade classes and aimed to evaluate the application of experimental lessons as a pedagogical resource for the teaching-learning process. In this study we sought to develop a methodology that, as well as characterising the students' thinking throughout the investigative activity, would allow us to relate each student's previous knowledge to their performance and strategies used during the activity, relating it to some everyday problems. The proposed experimental activities were designed taking into account three themes: Microbiology, Evolution and Plant Morphology and Anatomy.

The 476 letters in the thirteenth volume of The Correspondence of John Tyndall document the period from June 1, 1872, to September 28, 1873, much of which was consumed by Tyndall's lecture tour of the United States. We meet him in the midst of the Ayrton affair, which saw Tyndall coming to the defense of his friend and fellow X Club member Joseph Dalton Hooker against the First Commissioner of Works, Acton Smee Ayrton, in an acrimonious dispute over the governance of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Tyndall's tour of the United States was a rousing success by many measures, but he was not long on American shores before his well-documented skepticism of the efficacy of prayer stoked the waspish ire of the faithful. Tyndall's return to England in mid-February 1873 saw him begin preparations for his 1874 Belfast Address, when he accepted the presidency of the British Association for the Advancement of Scienceand articulated a defense of materialism that scandalized many of his contemporaries. As we leave him in September 1873, Tyndall is engaged in sharp-elbowed jostling with Scottish physicist Peter Guthrie Tait in the pages of Nature over James David Forbes, whose theory of glacial motion Tait had defended against Tyndall's attacks, in a scientific disagreement that evolved into a personal one. Biomonitoring and Dynamic Response of Air Plant to Air Pollution
Air plant (Tillandsia spp.) is a kind of special plants that can grow in the air and does not need soil. It is originated from Central and South America and has been introduced and cultivated all over the world because of its unique ornamental value. As a special epiphytic group, the root function of air plant is degraded, and it's growth completely depends on the leaves to absorb water and nutrients from the air, so its leaf absorption capacity is strong.The book contains a systematic study on the biomonitoring, purification and dynamic response of air plant to air pollutants. The results show that air plant is a broad spectrum plant to absorb atmospheric pollutants, including heavy metals (Hg, Cd, Pb etc.), formaldehyde, radon (Rn) and particulate matters (PM10, PM2.5 etc.). The specialized foliar trichomes densely covering Tillandsia leaves played a major role in the absorption of various pollutants. Moreover, air plant has a strong ability to resist air pollution damage, and has various unique avoidance or mitigation mechanisms in structure, physiology, gene and other aspects. Hormesis effect, in the framework of which a toxicant has a stimulating effect at low doses and a toxic effect at high doses, can commonly occur in this plant. Plant resistance genes and glutathione (GSH) may play an important role in the generation of hormesis.

These vernacular manuscripts invited their readers into a very old and learned conversation: Hippocrates and Galen weren't distant authorities whose word was law, they were trusted guides, whose advice could be excerpted, rearranged, recombined, and even altered to suit a manuscript compiler's needs. This conversation continued even after the printing press arrived in England in 1476. Printers mined manuscripts for medical and scientific texts that they would publish throughout the sixteenth century, though the pressures of a commercial printing market encouraged printers to package these old texts in new ways. Without the weight of authority conditioning their reactions and responses to very old knowledge, and with so many editions of practical books to choose from, English readers grew into confident critics and purveyors of natural knowledge in their own right. Melissa Reynolds reconstructs shifting attitudes toward medicine and science over two centuries of seismic change within English culture, attending especially to the effects of the Reformation on attitudes toward nature and the human body.
