Crop Production and Soil Management Techniques for the Tropics
The book is a compact and easy-to-use source of technical information on crop production and soil management. It is meant for use by students and teachers of agriculture at the college and the undergraduate levels; also farmers and agriculturists. It is presented in two parts (1 and 2).Part 1 discusses the principles and factors that determine success in crop production, such as the roles of soil, climate and technology adoption. In discussing the nature and properties of soils, specific attention is given to examples in the calculations of quantities, especially in the aspects of soil physics and soil chemistry. The roles of fertilizers, manures and soil amendments in the sustenance of soil fertility are discussed and illustrated with field data. Methods of converting soil test values of fertilizers to quantities and rates per hectare are given; so also are the procedures for ameliorating the challenges posed by soil pollution. There is also a discussion on the recently approved World Reference Base (WRB) for soil resources as to how it has enabled correlations among similar soil Groups and Orders across the different national classification systems that are in use. The 32 Reference Soil Groups (RSG) of the WRB are listed to create awareness on this very useful report provided by the FAO and UNESCO.Part 2 of the book deals with discussions on the nature, uses and cultivation processes for the wide range of crops produced in the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. National production levels are given with the perspective that such information reveals the relative popularity of some crops in certain countries and also their economic importance. This section on crop production covers two-thirds of the book and provides very handy briefs for quick and easy sourcing of information on a wide array of crops.The book ends with appendices that provide frequently required information on scientific values, constants, equations and terminologies. It is a handbook of general information on the issues of managing soils and producing relevant crops successfully in the face of a multiplicity of challenges.

Ecological Engineering: Concepts and Applications
The use of ecology and engineering to predict, design, construct or restore, and manage ecosystems is known as ecological engineering. It is aimed at integrating human society with its natural environment. The applications in ecological engineering can be categorized into 3 spatial scales: mesocosms, ecosystems and regional systems. Mesocosms range from a single centimeter to hundreds of meters, ecosystems range from a single kilometer to ten kilometers, and regional systems are those systems which span over ten kilometers. There is an increase in the complexity of the design usually observed with an increase in the spatial scale. Applications of ecological engineering are focused on the creation or restoration of ecosystems such as wetlands and greenhouses. Energy Dynamics and Climate Mitigation
This book analyzes the current approaches to energy management in India that is based on a carbon-intensive pathway, which if continued, may have serious implications for climate change mitigation with severe consequences for human health and survival. India, being a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement, is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions; however, the country's dilemmas are whether to prioritize environment over economy or vice versa and also whether economic growth can be sustained by relying on carbon-intensive development. Experts are of the view that the demand for coal and gas power generation will continue to rise and is expected to reach the equivalent of nearly 2 billion t of oil by 2030. The annual consumption of natural gas is expected to increase fourfold to 200 billion m3 a year in the near future, and its share in the primary energy basket of coal, oil, and gas will rise from 6.5% to 15% by 2030. This will not only cause a significant drain on foreign reserves but will also pose an enormous challenge to policymakers and scientists. Chinese Water Systems
This open-access book addresses latest Sino-German results of the joint research efforts within Major Water Program of the Chinese Government supported by German research funding. The Major Water Program aims at the restoration of polluted water environments and sustainable management of water resources in China. The joint BMBF-CLIENT project SINOWATER deals with three most significant and strongest polluted Chinese waters, the river Liao and the Dian-lake as well as Tai-lake in the area of the metropolises Shenyang, Kunming and Suzhou, respectively. The project was conducted by the Research Institute for Water and Waste Management at RWTH Aachen (FiW) e.V., Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment and Consumer Protection, Technical University of Munich, RWTH Aachen University, German and Chinese companies (Martin Membrane Systems AG, Steinhardt GmbH Wassertechnik, GuHong, JT-elektronik, bluemetric, Huawang Water, EVU Group, Atemis GmbH, i+f process GmbH) in close cooperation withChinese Academy of Environmental Sciences, Tongji University, and the Dianchi Lake Management Authorities. Overall, the joint Sino-German research project SINOWATER provided solutions for the improvement of the water quality in the mentioned water bodies as well as development and optimization of Good Water Governance. These objectives could be achieved through the implementation of innovative German water technologies and the optimization of water management elements in the fields of industrial and municipal wastewater treatment as well as river and shallow lake management.
