Know thyself

Ingram 出版
2025/02/26 出版

In this popular science book, through dialogues with an artificial intelligence specialist, a physiologist presents the basic principles of the organism. For the first time, the organism is considered as a community of 220 types of selfish cells. All cells of the body (and there are about 50 trillion of them) compete for common resources. No cell "wants" to work for another, as this requires the expenditure of its limited energy. Nevertheless, the life products of some cell types have proven useful for others. Such causal chains between different types of cells (e.g., neurons and muscle cells, neurons and secretory cells), as a result of which the organism escaped predators or obtained food, were also useful to the organism. Evolution has preserved only those species whose cells had the ability to counteract the "despotism" of the brain and restore optimal metabolism. Man is healthy as long as biochemical and physiological multilevel mechanisms provide a compromise between effector cells and the main organizer of behavioral response - the brain. It is shown how slowly developing diseases of age are associated with disturbances in this compromise.

Fungi for optimum ligninolytic enzyme production in Chhattisgarh

Ingram 出版
2025/02/26 出版

Lignocellulose is the major component of plant cell wall which can be degraded by natural degraders such as Bacteria and Fungi. Lignin being amorphous in nature lacks stereo regularity. Despite of its resistant nature it has been reported to be degraded by Laccase, Lignin peroxidase and Manganese Peroxidase secreted by Bacteria and Fungi. It protects cellulose and Hemicellulose from enzymatic hydrolysis. Thus it is important to degrade lignin so that cellulose and hemicellulose are made available for degradation. Lignin is the only substance which can be completely degraded into water and Carbon dioxide by microbes. Thus microorganisms have the capacity to cycle lignin to humus. The enzymatic activity of the fungi (Aspergillus niger) as obtained was noted to be higher than the growth rate indicating that the isolated fungi have a great biotechnological potential. The fungi have high conversion rate and high de-polymerization efficiency.

Rat Lungworm Disease

Susan,Jarvi  著
Ingram 出版
2025/02/26 出版

The pathogenic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a leading global causative agent of eosinophilic meningitis in humans and other species. Clinically, this disease is known as neuroangiostrongyliasis but is colloquially recognized as rat lungworm disease. This disease has resulted in morbidity and mortality in humans and other accidental hosts, and the geographic range of this pathogen continues to increase through global expansion. The first five studies in this reprint provide updates on recent global research efforts and distribution, including studies from India, Brazil, Ecuador, reports of coinfections in Spain, and the genetic-based determination of global spread patterns of A. cantonensis. The other six studies evaluate potential mechanisms for prevention, such as creating barriers to decrease the mollusk infestation of crops; disease diagnostics applying both DNA and antibody-based methods; and current approaches to the pharmacological management of this disease using a multi-drug approach in humans, as well as investigating the effects on A. cantonensis of a commercially available antiparasitic currently used for controlling heartworm, fleas, and ticks in dogs. Guest Editor Susan I. Jarvi is a Professor in the department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, where she teaches Pharmaceutical Immunology and other infectious disease-related subjects at the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy at the University of Hawaii in Hilo, HI.

RSV Epidemiological Surveillance

Ingram 出版
2025/02/25 出版

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute lower respiratory tract infection worldwide. Most children infected with RSV typically show mild respiratory symptoms. In newborns and infants, the typical clinical manifestations are bronchiolitis and pneumonia: the first is usually self-limiting, but accounts for a significant number of hospitalizations and admissions to the pediatric intensive care unit. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, RSV was typically described as a seasonal virus, characterized by a predictable epidemiological pattern, depending on the geographic area and climate. Due to restrictive measures adopted during the pandemic, many authors reported an initial reduction in RSV circulation, followed by an out-of-season surge of RSV as the measures adopted during the COVID-19 pandemic loosened. Epidemiological surveillance suggests that this trend in the epidemic wave affected not only children, but also adults, in particular the elderly. On the other hand, newly introduced prophylactic measures, such as nirsevimab administration to newborns and infants, are positively affecting the global picture. This Special Issue provides a comprehensive scenario of the epidemiological trend of RSV before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, it represents a starting point for designing future preventive strategies to reduce RSV spread in both children and adults.

Impact of Environmental Factors and Management Practices on Bee Health

Ingram 出版
2025/02/25 出版

This compilation of twenty-three original articles and a communication underscores the urgency of using interdisciplinary approaches to safeguard bee health and ecosystem sustainability. The published articles explore complex factors affecting health, emphasizing the global honeybee and pollinator populations crisis. Key insights include Stressors on Bee Populations (pathogens, pests (e.g., V. destructor), pesticides, habitat loss, and climate change); Control Measures (studies highlighting effective methods such as queen caging and oxalic acid treatments for Varroosis control, essential oils as alternatives to synthetic acaricides, and advancements in diagnostic tools such as qPCR assays for diseases such as American foulbrood); the Impact of Environmental and Agricultural Practices (urbanization, pesticide exposure, and agricultural intensification affect bees differently, e.g., urban areas showed a higher pathogen prevalence, while rural areas had more pesticide-related impacts); Chemical and Biological Research (research identified effective natural remedies, such as Agaricus bisporus extract, and studied pesticide residues' effects on honey and beeswax); Behavioral and Genetic Studies (studies on disease transmission behaviors, genetic responses to stressors, and the influence of food diversity reveal how bees adapt to environmental challenges and human activities); and Global and Local Initiatives (efforts such as citizen science for monitoring wild bees, the development of biosecurity measures, and comparative studies on bee species in diverse habitats aim to mitigate risks and improve resilience).

The Evolution of Imperfection

Princeton 出版
2025/02/22 出版

How understanding our genetic imperfections can change our view of evolution and enrich what it means to be human If we start with the presumption that evolution is a constantly improving process, some aspects of our evolution just do not make sense. We have a high rate of genetic diseases, for example, and much of our DNA seems to be pointless. In The Evolution of Imperfection, Laurence Hurst explores our apparently rotten genetic luck. Hurst, a leading authority on evolution and genetics, argues that our evolutionary imperfections proceed directly from two features: the difficulties of pregnancy and the fact that historically there are relatively few of us. In pregnancy, natural selection can favor chromosomes that kill embryos in species (including ours) that continuously receive resources from the mother. Most fertilized eggs don't make it, and incompatibilities between the fetus and mother can lead to lethal disorders of pregnancy. The historically small population size enhances the role of chance, which in turn leads to both accumulation of unnecessary DNA and more mutation. So what can save us? One answer may lie in genetic medicine, which has given us therapies that make killer conditions preventable and even curable. Hurst suggests that our seeming imperfections could be the key to a new way to understand evolution itself. Looking at circumstances that seem to defy explanation, we might come to a richer understanding of how evolution really works, and what it means to be human.

Mathematical Properties of Population-Genetic Statistics

Princeton 出版
2025/02/20 出版

A powerful new approach to interpreting population-genetic data in evolution and ecology Population genetics uses statistical analysis to catalog genetic variation among populations and species. Summary statistics computed from allele frequencies--mathematical functions that measure features of genetic similarity and diversity--are key to this global effort. Yet despite their widespread use in evolutionary biology, ecology, and conservation biology, their mathematical properties have largely been overlooked. This book shows how to use the mathematical bounds on summary statistics to make better interpretations of population-genetic data. Noah Rosenberg discusses how the behavior of these statistics depends not only on the biology of the populations they seek to describe but also on the mathematical properties of the functions used to compute them, properties that produce constraints on the values of the statistics and influence their interpretation. Focusing on the concept of homozygosity--a quadratic function of allele frequencies in a population--he demonstrates how to account for mathematical constraints when measuring genetic similarity and diversity. Rosenberg illustrates the results using examples from empirical data and shares strategies that readers can use to apply this mathematical perspective to different kinds of summary statistics, including those for measuring biodiversity in ecological communities. Drawing inspiration from Charles Darwin, who marveled at evolution's "endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful," this book presents a groundbreaking approach to the study of genetic variation. It is sure to stimulate new research in population biology and deeper thinking about the meaning and interpretation of essential measurements of the world's genomes.

Oral Cancer

Ingram 出版
2025/02/17 出版

Oral cancer contributes to approximately 3-10% of all cancer mortality worldwide, and its incidence is continuously increasing due to environmental conditions and harmful modern lifestyles. In association with hereditary predisposition, chronic inflammation, and infectious diseases, these factors raise the frequency of oral cavity malignancies. Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) represents 90% of oral neoplasia; it is the sixth most frequent malignancy in the world, with an overall 5-year survival rate below 50% due to its modest outcomes, late diagnosis, aggressive local invasiveness, recurrences, and metastases. OSCC belongs to the comprehensive group of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs), which affect the cell lining of the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. The local-regional recurrence rate for advanced carcinomas is over 50% despite the administration of multimodal therapy, and understanding the biology of HNSCCs is essential to ameliorate their prognosis. A major intervention involves extensive surgery associated with radio and chemotherapy. Advancements in cancer immunotherapy have not yet established the specific mechanisms by which immune cells influence tumor progression and immune evasion, and oral cancers continue to respond inadequately to the current treatment protocols. The above-mentioned aspects underline this Special Issue, which has brought together the most recent research on molecular mechanisms implied in the prophylaxis, etiopathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, evolution, and prognosis of oral cancer.

Interdisciplinary Research into Cultural and Biological Transformations in the Paleolithic Period

Ran,Barkai  著
Ingram 出版
2025/02/17 出版

The incredibly long Paleolithic period is still considered by some to be a stagnant phase in human cultural and biological evolution prior to the appearance of our direct ancestors. However, in recent years, extensive interdisciplinary research has clearly demonstrated that this is not the case. Starting from the earliest stages of human presence on the planet some three million years ago, an impressive series of transformations, innovations, modifications and adaptations characterize our lineage. These changes in behavior and culture took place alongside biological adaptations in human physical properties, faunal turnovers and extinctions, as well as climatic fluctuations. This makes the Old Stone Age a hectic, dynamic and lively epoch that is worthy of investigation, both at the diachronic and synchronic levels, in order to decipher the nature of the transformations that characterize the emergence, prosperity and legacy of our lineage. This Special Issue, titled "Interdisciplinary Research into Cultural and Biological Transformations in the Paleolithic Period", presents state-of-the-art, as well as outside-of-the-box, studies regarding changes in human adaptation, human physiology, faunal diversity and climatic fluctuations, as well as the possible nexus between these lines of inquiry.

Natural Bioactive Compounds Exerting Health Promoting Effects through Ameliorating Oxidative Stress

Baojun,Xu  著
Ingram 出版
2025/02/17 出版

Oxidative stress is caused by various intrinsic and extrinsic factors. It has been widely accepted that dietary or dietary supplement interventions can decrease levels of oxidative stress. Natural bioactive compounds (flavonoids, stilbenes, terpenes, alkaloids, saponins, polysaccharides, etc.) have been reported to exhibit multiple health-promoting effects, including antioxidant activity. However, the underlying cellular signaling and molecular mechanisms of their effect in ameliorating oxidative stress are not fully understood. In this Special Issue, we have collected and summarized the antioxidant activities of natural bioactive compounds based on the studies from cell culture models, animal models, and clinical trials. This Special Issue contains twelve papers covering the above-mentioned topics, including one systematic review and meta-analysis, one editorial, and ten research papers.

It also included information for students of the annual international Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition and the emerging biohacker community. In addition, it detailed a colorful lab course in bacterial synthetic biology based on chromoproteins. The second edition covers new material including our next-generation less-toxic versions of the chromoproteins (now made available as kits), UV-free imaging and quantitation with smartphones, a computational modeling lab and yeast experiment, logic gates, type IIS cloning and the CRISPR revolution. Our decade-old manual is still the only lab course book in synthetic biology that is based on chromoproteins, the simplest bacterial reporters. However, this has become outdated due to our development of next-generation, less-toxic chromoproteins and UV-free quantitation. The main competing lab course book in synthetic biology is still the decade-old BioBuilder: Synthetic Biology in The Lab by Kuldell et al. (2015). However, it is based on outdated approaches that use more complicated methods than chromoproteins to enable colored reporters, making it a less-suitable educational tool. In addition, topical issues in synthetic biology such as computational modeling, logic gates, type IIS cloning and eukaryotic experiments, including the CRISPR revolution are now covered.

This first edition of this book was the first manual for laboratory work in the rapidly expanding field of synthetic biology. Aimed at non-specialists, it contained protocols central to synthetic biology in both research and education. Alive

A profound and provocative journey through the human body from a surgeon and award-winning writer. "Weston's evocative descriptions will change how readers see the body....This captivates."--Publishers Weekly (starred review) What does it mean to live in a body? For Gabriel Weston, there was always something missing from the anatomy she was taught at medical school. She'd forged an unconventional path, first studying humanities and getting an entry-level job in publishing, before a spark of inspiration set her on the path to becoming a doctor. Medicine teaches us how a body functions, but it doesn't help us navigate the reality of living in one. As Weston became a surgeon, a mother, and ultimately a patient herself, she found herself grappling with the gap between scientific knowledge and unfathomable complexity of human experience. In this captivating exploration of the body, Weston dissolves the boundaries that usually divide surgeon and patient, pushing beyond the limit of what science has to tell us about who we are and leaning on her roots in the humanities. Focusing on our individual organs, not just under the intense spotlight of the operating theatre, but in the central role they play in the stories of our lives, a fuller and more human picture of our bodies emerges: more fragile, frightening and miraculous than we could have imagined. Intimate, penetrating and original, Alive is about our bodies and bonds, the richness and brevity of existence, and the thread of mortality that connect us all.
