Invertebrates

2024/12/23 出版

Invertebrates are animals that neither possess nor develop a vertebral column, derived from the notochord. These include all animals apart from the subphylum Vertebrata. Invertebrates are animals with no backbone. More than 90% of the animals are invertebrates among the estimated 15-30 million animal species. Invertebrates exist about anywhere. These have been found in the driest of deserts, high reaches of the atmosphere and canopies of wettest rainforests. They also exist in the frozen Antarctic or under the deepest oceans. Whether batting away irritating flies, unearthing a worm or admiring the complexity of a spider's web and much more all these animals are invertebrates. Invertebrates are so many that it is almost impossible to count them all. There are so many invertebrate animal species of different shapes and sizes that help us in many ways and are vital to our survival. Invertebrates serve as food for humans; are key elements in food chains that support birds, fish, and many other vertebrate species; and play important roles in plant pollination.

Anti-centromere antibodies in routine use

Ingram 出版
2024/12/19 出版

Anti-centromere antibodies (ACA) can be detected by indirect immunofluorescence (IFI) or immunodot (ID). Our aim was to assess IFI/ID concordance and the clinical relevance of ACA.Patients presenting with ACA positivity by IFI on Hep-2 cells and/or by ID were included. ACAs were detected in 63 cases (2.1% of IFI+ID tests). ACAs were positive by IFI and ID in 18 cases. Discordances involved 2 cases of ACA-IFI+/ACA-ID- and 43 cases of ACA-IFI-/ACA-ID+. For these 43 cases, the nuclear fluorescence appearance (IFI) was speckled (34), nucleolar speckled (6) or homogeneous (3); ACA (ID) was weakly positive (26), positive (7) or strongly positive (10).The diagnosis of connective tissue disease (systemic scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis) was retained in 3 patients out of 18 with clinical information. IFI on Hep-2 cells has certain limitations (operator-dependent; one fluorescence appearance may be masked by another). ID is useful for confirming antigenic specificity, within the limits of the antigens used. Interpretation of these tests depends on the clinical context.

Jun,Mei  著
Ingram 出版
2024/12/19 出版

The aim of this reprint is to acquaint the reader with the latest technologies and methods employed packaging in order to prolong the shelf life of food. Active coatings can protect food from the decomposition of microorganisms due to their edibility, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, lack of pollution and so on. In addition, these coatings incorporate active ingredients such as deoxidizers, antioxidants and antimicrobials in the coating material and can release or absorb the active ingredients into the packaged food or its surroundings. The production of suitable coatings should take into account the type of polymer, the active ingredients added and the physical and chemical properties of the food. The polymers employed in the coatings can come from synthetic or natural sources, with natural biopolymers mainly composed of proteins, polysaccharides, lipids or their combinations (chitosan, starch, protein isolate, etc.) often used. Researchers have also endeavored to find natural active ingredients that can extend the shelf life of foods during storage. These include gas scavengers, antimicrobials and antioxidants. In this reprint, experts in the field share their insights, research results and future prospects regarding the base materials of active coatings, the screening of active ingredients, their evaluation and application. We embark on a journey to explore and exploit the positive impact of active coatings on the high-quality storage of food, in order to aid in the development of new active films for packaging.

Impact of COVID-19 and Non-COVID-19 Vaccination in Special Populations

Ingram 出版
2024/12/19 出版

Vaccination is crucial for reducing morbidity and mortality; however, vaccine hesitancy poses a significant challenge, often driven by a lack of confidence in vaccine safety and efficacy. The World Health Organization defines vaccine hesitancy as the delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines despite their availability. To enhance vaccination uptake, it is vital to provide evidence demonstrating vaccine safety and efficacy, especially for populations prone to hesitancy. This Special Issue focuses on four specific groups: children, older adults, patients with comorbid conditions, and risk-averse individuals. Research highlighted in this issue reveals that the COVID-19 vaccines generally have high efficacy and low serious adverse event rates in children. Older adults often lack adequate vaccination guidelines tailored to their specific health needs, stressing the necessity for more comprehensive recommendations. Additionally, patients with autoimmune diseases showed impaired immunity to vaccines, though a second dose proved beneficial without increasing adverse events. Moreover, risk-averse individuals demonstrated anxiety during vaccinations, particularly those with severe allergies, but this could be alleviated in controlled environments. Lastly, those with prior COVID-19 infections experienced "pandemic fatigue," elevating their vaccine hesitancy. The findings underscore the need for targeted education and support to encourage vaccination across these diverse populations, ultimately preserving public health and preventing societal disruptions.

Seed Priming Approaches That Achieve Environmental Stress Tolerance

Ingram 出版
2024/12/19 出版

Seed germination and seedling vigor can be enhanced by different chemical or physical treatments and this process is called "seed priming". Thus, seed priming can be defined as treatments for enhancing seed germination and vigor. Seed priming can be a costless, practical, and effective approach, leading to fast and uniform germination, thus increasing seedling vigor and crop yield in numerous crops, especially under unfavorable environmental conditions, in both dormant and non-dormant seeds. Similarly, seed priming can enhance resistance to environmental stress conditions, including biotic and abiotic stressors.Different seed priming approaches, including osmopriming, hydropriming, phytohormone priming, chemical priming, nutrient priming, and redox priming, have been described. In the latter group, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) must be included, as it is well known that, at low concentrations, H2O2 stimulates seed germination as well as the early seedling growth of plants. In addition, physical treatments can also stimulate seed germination and vigor. In this regard, specifically, the short treatments of seeds with red light also stimulates seed germination and vigor. The aim and scope of this Special Issue is to encourage the publication of reviews and/or experimental research regarding physiological, biochemical, and molecular aspects related to the effect of seed priming on germination and seedling establishment in dormant and non-dormant seeds, and their interaction with environmental stresses.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)

Ingram 出版
2024/12/18 出版

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form of sleep-disordered breathing and is characterized by recurrent episodes of complete or partial upper airway obstruction during sleep, resulting in oxygen desaturation, autonomic dysfunction, and sleep fragmentation. It can affect both children and adults, and the main clinical symptoms include loud snoring, noticeable apneas, and breathing difficulties during sleep. Overnight polysomnography is the gold-standard method for diagnosing OSA. Although OSA is common, it is a frequently unrecognized cause of serious disabilities that have serious health and social consequences. If untreated, OSA may cause impaired cognitive ability, road traffic accidents, cardiovascular morbidity, and all-cause mortality.Various therapeutic options exist. CPAP is the standard treatment for adult OSA, although its clinical application can be compromised by intolerance and poor compliance, while adenotonsillectomy is the primary treatment option for children with OSA and adenotonsillar hypertrophy. This Special Issue entitled "Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)" offers further insights into the pathophysiology, diagnostic assessment, and management of patients with OSA and highlights the importance of continuous research in this field.

Potential distribution of the richness of endemic Caatinga birds

Ingram 出版
2024/12/18 出版

The diversity, richness and number of endemics of the Caatinga, the only strictly Brazilian biome, have long been underestimated. However, today we know that it is an extremely heterogeneous biome and one of the most altered in Brazil, which emphasises the relevance of new studies. In particular, little is known about the distribution patterns of bird richness in this environment. With a view to contributing to this knowledge, we selected 29 species of birds endemic to the Caatinga in order to estimate their potential geographical distribution. Two large regions of greater richness were identified, one associated with the Chapada do Araripe and the Borborema Plateau, and the other with the Upper S瓊o Francisco region. These regions correspond to the higher altitude areas, with an average of 450m to 850m. Evaluating the representativeness of the existing Conservation Units (UC), we identified that the areas of greatest richness are lacking in protected areas, which drives the implementation of UCs in these regions. In short, this book seeks to point out the regions of greatest richness of the endemic birds of the Caatinga, in order to support conservation measures to ensure the permanence of local biodiversity.

Anti-Cancer Activity of Parmelia Perlata Ethanolic Extract

Ingram 出版
2024/12/18 出版

As the world's top cause of mortality, cancer is currently the most prevalent barrier to achieving a good life expectancy in most nations. Ovarian cancer is the third most frequent gynecologic cancer, after cervical and uterine cancer. It also has the worst prognosis and the highest death rate. Ovarian cancer is less common than breast cancer, yet it is three times as dangerous. It is projected that this sickness will cause a significant increase in deaths by 2040. The slow development of symptoms, hidden and silent growth of the tumour, and insufficient screening are all factors in the high fatality rate from ovarian cancer. This suffering is exacerbated by the present cancer screening methods' inadequate diagnostic effectiveness. In conventional medicine, chemotherapy comes after surgical debulking. Chemotherapy is a frequently used cancer treatment strategy. But the side effects of chemotherapy medications are quite awful and poisonous. This book deals with the ovarian cancer cell line (PA-1) used to test the anti-cancer effects of ethanolic extract of Parmelia perlata.

Mushroom Day

University 出版
2024/12/14 出版

An hourly guide that spotlights twenty-four fungus species as they spread spores, find food, and adapt to a changing planet. On this mushroom-filled day, ecologist Alison Pouliot tours the world to introduce readers to a fascinating variety of fungi. Each chapter of Mushroom Day introduces a single fungus during a single hour, highlighting twenty-four different species. In the dark of the night, the green glow of the ghost fungus guides us into the forest to learn about the mysteries of bioluminescence. At dawn, we awaken to find a fairy ring of mushrooms that has appeared overnight like something out of folklore. But we don't have much time to linger, as we must reach the Italian forest before other porcino hunters forage the morning's fattest and finest. In the heat of the afternoon, the ripe stench of the stinkhorn might send us out of the woods, while the enticing aroma of the aniseed funnel lures us back in. Late in the evening we spy a fungus known as the witches cauldron and wonder what it might tell us about the future. By the end of our mushroom day, we'll have glimpsed the diversity of this unique kingdom, met fungus friends that feed and fascinate, and learned how humans can encourage their flourishing. For each hour, celebrated artist Stuart Patience has depicted these scenes with evocative pen and ink illustrations. Working together to narrate and illustrate these unique moments in time, Pouliot and Patience have created an engaging read that is a perfect way to spend an hour or two--and a true gift for foragers, mycophiles, and anyone who wants to stop and appreciate fungi.

Where Biology Ends and Bias Begins

Ingram 出版
2024/12/13 出版

A geneticist and internationally recognized anti-racism educator provides a powerful, science-based rebuttal to common fallacies about human difference. Well-meaning physicians, parents, and even scientists today often spread misinformation about what biology can and can't tell us about our bodies, minds, and identities. In this accessible, myth-busting book, geneticist Shoumita Dasgupta draws on the latest science to correct common misconceptions about how much of our social identities are actually based in genetics. Dasgupta weaves together history, current affairs, and cutting-edge science to break down how genetic concepts are misused and how we can approach scientific evidence in a socially responsible way. With a unifying and intersectional approach disentangling biology from bigotry, the book moves beyond race and gender to incorporate categories like sexual orientation, disability, and class. Where Biology Ends and Bias Begins is an invaluable, empowering resource for biologists, geneticists, science educators, and anyone working against bias in their community.

Early Biomarkers for Diagnosing Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetics

Ingram 出版
2024/12/11 出版

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is a significant microvascular complication of Diabetes Mellitus that can progress to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The severity of DN is typically assessed using the albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR), but this method has limitations in terms of sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, identifying novel biomarkers for the early detection of DN is essential for improving patient outcomes. One promising candidate is uromodulin, a kidney-specific protein predominantly synthesized in the thick ascending limb of Henle's loop. Recent studies suggest that urinary uromodulin levels and the expression of uromodulin mRNA in urinary exosomes (a subpopulation of extracellular vesicles) could serve as potential biomarkers for DN in patients with type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to evaluate the role of urinary uromodulin and its exosomal UMOD mRNA gene expression as early biomarkers for diabetic nephropathy in this patient population.

Remnants of Ancient Life

Princeton 出版
2024/12/11 出版

The revolution in science that is transforming our understanding of extinct life We used to think of fossils as being composed of nothing but rock and minerals, all molecular traces of life having vanished long ago. We were wrong. Remnants of Ancient Life reveals how the new science of ancient biomolecules--pigments, proteins, and DNA that once functioned in living organisms tens of millions of years ago--is opening a new window onto the evolution of life on Earth. Paleobiologists are now uncovering these ancient remnants in the fossil record with increasing frequency, shedding vital new light on long-extinct creatures and the lost world they inhabited. Dale Greenwalt is your guide to these astonishing breakthroughs. He explains how ancient biomolecules hold the secrets to how mammoths dealt with the bitter cold, what colors dinosaurs exhibited in mating displays, how ancient viruses evolved to become more dangerous, and much more. Each chapter discusses different types of biomolecules and the insights they provide about the physiology, behavior, and evolution of extinct organisms, many of which existed long before the age of dinosaurs. A marvelous adventure of discovery, Remnants of Ancient Life offers an unparalleled look at an emerging science that is transforming our picture of the remote past. You will never think of fossils in the same way again.

Anaerobic Fermentation - a Biological Route towards Achieving Net Neutrality

Ingram 出版
2024/12/10 出版

To achieve net neutrality, a sustainable circular economy approach is preferred. Amongst the available options, biological routes and especially the 'Anaerobic Fermentation' route have immense potential to contribute to net neutrality. This special issue pulls together research and review articles in this important area that can be categorized under the following three streams: (i) progressing the understanding of anaerobic digestion across disciplines; (ii) highlighting the potential for new products via anaerobic digestion; and (iii) identifying the suitable valorisation pathways for enabling a circular bioeconomy via VFAs. The implementation of these 'nature-based solutions, ' aligned with the outcomes of COP27, provides reassurance that the scientific community is advancing in the appropriate direction toward achieving net neutrality. However, transitioning from the current 'transition' mindset to the goal of 'achieving net zero' still demands substantial efforts from political, scientific, and commercial stakeholders to ensure financial sustainability and feasibility.

Dna, Race, and Reproduction

Ingram 出版
2024/12/07 出版

A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. DNA, Race, and Reproduction helps readers inside and outside of academia evaluate and engage with the current genomic landscape. It brings together expertise in law, medicine, religion, history, anthropology, philosophy, and genetics to examine how scientists, medical professionals, and laypeople use genomic concepts to construct racial identity and make or advise reproductive decisions, often at the same moment. It critically and accessibly interrogates how DNA figures in the reproduction of racialized bodies and the racialization of reproduction and examines the privileged position from which genomic knowledge claims to speak about human bodies, societies, and activities. The volume begins from the premise that reproduction, regardless of the means, forces a confrontation between biomedical, scientific, and popular understandings of genetics, and that those understandings are often racialized. It therefore centers reproduction as both a site of analysis and an analytic lens.

Virulence Mechanisms of Clostridium botulinum A3 on Human Gut

Roja,B  著
Ingram 出版
2024/12/07 出版

The genome of Clostridium botulinum A3 Loch Maree (4,259,691bp) produces type A3 neurotoxins and other virulence factors, with the bont/A gene on plasmid pCLK_A0076. This strain shows a high evolutionary rate, adapting to hosts and environments, and has 43 unique virulence and host defense genes. Extrachromosomal elements enhance its virulence, including botulism toxin A3. Of 521 hypothetical proteins, many are involved in amino acid metabolism, and we predicted 13 new virulence proteins. A global regulatory network model revealed 12 transcriptional regulators homologous to Bacillus subtilis, controlling virulence factors. A recombinant subunit and multi-epitope vaccine were developed, targeting proteins such as peptidoglycan hydrolase and SCP-like extracellular protein, showing stable interactions with immune receptors. These vaccines, with minimal allergenicity, are promising candidates against A3 strain virulence. Network modeling revealed host-microbe-drug interactions, identifying linoleic acid as a key metabolite. Chloroquine was found effective for treating foodborne infections, supporting antibiotic repurposing without harming beneficial gut microbes.
