Im Physikunterricht steht 羹blicherweise ein Doppel-spalt-Versuch mit Laser-Licht im Zentrum, wobei in der Regel sehr viele Photonen beteiligt sind. Aber was geschieht, wenn jeweils nur ein Photon durch den Doppelspalt geschickt wird? Zur Veranschaulichung von Grundfakten der Quantenphysik (Unbestimmtheit, Komplementarit瓣t, ...) werden in der Schule in Ermangelung teurer Einzelphotonen-Ger瓣te Polarisationsexperimente mit Laser-Licht durchgef羹hrt. Stellen solche Experimente nur eine Analogie zum Verhalten eines einzelnen Photons dar, oder verhalten sich Einzelphotonen tats瓣chlich wie klassische elektromagnetische Wellen? Welcher-Weg-Information (WWI) und Interferenz schlie?en sich gegenseitig aus. Bei einem modifizierten Doppelspaltversuch mit Licht soll der Durchtrittsspalt an der Polarisation jedes Photons mittels eines Analysators abgelesen werden. Die Sch羹ler lernen dabei den Begriff des Quantenradierers kennen, denn durch die Orientierung eines Analysators k繹nne WWI gewonnen werden, oder sie k繹nne entfernt (ausradiert) werden, worauf Interferenz wieder sichtbar wird. Kann die Analysatorstellung wirklich den Durchtrittsort nachtr瓣glich und r羹ckwirkend beeinflussen (verz繹gerte Entscheidung, Retrokausalit瓣t)? Ein Hohlraum-Resonator f羹r elektromagnetische Wellen ger瓣t in Resonanz, wenn Wellen mit einer der Eigenfrequenzen des Resonators eingestrahlt werden. Kann der Hohlraum bereits mit einem einzigen Photon in Resonanz geraten? Mit Hohlraum-Resonatoren vor jedem Spalt k繹nnte man so bei einem Doppelspalt-Experiment mit Atomen den Durchtrittsort registrieren und WWI zu erhalten, ohne den Zustand des Atoms zu st繹ren. Information Metamaterials

Metamaterials have attracted enormous interests from both physics and engineering communities in the past 20 years, owing to their powerful ability in manipulating electromagnetic waves. However, the functionalities of traditional metamaterials are fixed at the time of fabrication. To control the EM waves dynamically, active components are introduced to the meta-atoms, yielding active metamaterials. Recently, a special kind of active metamaterials, digital coding and programmable metamaterials, are proposed, which can achieve dynamically controllable functionalities using field programmable gate array (FPGA). Most importantly, the digital coding representations of metamaterials set up a bridge between the digital world and physical world, and allow metamaterials to process digital information directly, leading to information metamaterials. In this Element, we review the evolution of information metamaterials, mainly focusing on their basic concepts, design principles, fabrication techniques, experimental measurement and potential applications. Future developments of information metamaterials are also envisioned.

Electrically Driven Quantum Dot Based Single-Photon Sources

Semiconductor quantum optics is on the verge of moving from the lab to real world applications. When stepping from basic research to new technologies, device engineers will need new simulation tools for the design and optimization of quantum light sources, which combine classical device physics with cavity quantum electrodynamics. This thesis aims to provide a holistic description of single-photon emitting diodes by bridging the gap between microscopic and macroscopic modeling approaches. The central result is a novel hybrid quantum-classical model system that self-consistently couples semi-classical carrier transport theory with open quantum many-body systems. This allows for a comprehensive description of quantum light emitting diodes on multiple scales: It enables the calculation of the quantum optical figures of merit together with the simulation of the spatially resolved current flow in complex, multi-dimensional semiconductor device geometries out of one box. The hybrid system is shown to be consistent with fundamental laws of (non-)equilibrium thermodynamics and is demonstrated by numerical simulations of realistic devices.
