This book comprises the lectures of a two-semester course on quantum field theory, presented in a quite informal and personal manner. The course starts with relativistic one-particle systems, and develops the basics of quantum field theory with an analysis on the representations of the Poincar矇 group. Canonical quantization is carried out for scalar, fermion, Abelian and non-Abelian gauge theories. Covariant quantization of gauge theories is also carried out with a detailed description of the BRST symmetry. The Higgs phenomenon and the standard model of electroweak interactions are also developed systematically. Regularization and (BPHZ) renormalization of field theories as well as gauge theories are discussed in detail, leading to a derivation of the renormalization group equation. In addition, two chapters -- one on the Dirac quantization of constrained systems and another on discrete symmetries -- are included for completeness, although these are not covered in the two-semester course.This second edition includes two new chapters, one on Nielsen identities and the other on basics of global supersymmetry. This is not another quantum mechanics text on conventional lines. Most topics covered in undergraduate quantum physics courses are notable for their absence. Instead this book concentrates upon understanding the intriguing conceptual issues raised by quantum mechanics. It is neither a book for experts nor a "popular physics" book. It is intended for the serious student, but at undergraduate or early postgraduate level. The aim is to demystify ("unweird") quantum mechanics by analysing the many conundrums it presents in terms of the theory's own language, namely Hilbert space algebra. It should be regarded as complementary to standard treatments, not a replacement for them. A rapid reprise of the Hilbert space formalism of quantum mechanics is first presented and then applied to a wide range of topics including, (a) the reason why "which path" information destroys interference, (b) the reason why quantum states cannot be non-destructively copied, (c) what the uniquely quantum "observability of counterfactuals" means, (d) why constantly monitoring a pure quantum state can prohibit its evolution, (e) analyses of interference experiments involving entangled particles and so-called "delayed choice", "quantum erasure" and "delayed erasure" interference, (f) the quantum formulation of entropy, (g) the definition and quantification of entanglement in both pure and mixed quantum states, (h) the two convincing arguments against "hidden variables" in quantum mechanics, and hence the irreducibly indeterministic nature of quantum measurement, (i) what is meant by decoherence and how it can be quantified, (j) why big things tend not to be "quantum mechanical" - and why they sometimes are, and more often than you think, (k) a brief taster for quantum communication and quantum cryptography, and (l) quantum teleportation: what it is and what it isn't. Traditional topics are not ignored entirely. The book includes a rather idiosyncratic treatment of symmetry and conservation laws, the uncertainty principle, and a detailed chapter on algebraic methods in Hilbert space with which all physics students of a theoretical bent should be familiar. In particular the book places great emphasis from the start on appreciating the distinction between pure quantum states and mixed states, which avoids unnecessary confusion. By the end the reader should have a sensible, physicists', perspective on Schrodinger's cat and understand what exactly is meant by being able to extract the result of a quantum computer's computation without turning it on.

Not only the general public, but even students of physics appear to believe that the physics concept of spacetime was introduced by Einstein. This is both unfortunate and unfair. It was Hermann Minkowski (Einstein's mathematics professor) who announced the new four-dimensional (spacetime) view of the world in 1908, which he deduced from experimental physics by decoding the profound message hidden in the failed experiments designed to discover absolute motion. Minkowski realized that the images coming from our senses, which seem to represent an evolving three-dimensional world, are only glimpses of a higher four-dimensional reality that is not divided into past, present, and future since space and all moments of time form an inseparable entity (spacetime). Einstein's initial reaction to Minkowski's view of spacetime and the associated with it four-dimensional physics (also introduced by Minkowski) was not quite favorable: "Since the mathematicians have invaded the relativity theory, I do not understand it myself any more." However, later Einstein adopted not only Minkowski's spacetime physics (which was crucial for Einstein's revolutionary theory of gravity as curvature of spacetime), but also Minkowski's world view as evident from Einstein's letter of condolences to the widow of his longtime friend Besso: "Now Besso has departed from this strange world a little ahead of me. That means nothing. People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion." Besso left this world on 15 March 1955; Einstein followed him on 18 April 1955. This volume contains Hermann Minkowski's four works, which laid the foundations of spacetime physics. In some sense it can be regarded as a second expanded edition of the first book published by the Minkowski Institute Press - H. Minkowski, Space and Time: Minkowski's papers on relativity (Minkowski Institute Press, Montreal 2012) - which included Minkowski's three papers published by him. Now, in addition to those papers, this volume also contains Minkowski's fourth paper assembled and published by Minkowski's student Max Born in 1910 "A Derivation of the Fundamental Equations for the Electromagnetic Processes in Moving Bodies from the Standpoint of the Theory of Electrons".
