Integrated Land and Water Resources Management in a Canal Command

2025/07/19 出版

The water supply in the Hirakud canal command (Eastern India) is not adequate to meet the irrigation requirement of non-monsoon crops. On annual basis, the canal water supply is able to meet only 54% of the irrigation demand at 90% probability of exceedance (PE) level. Hence, in order to mitigate the irrigation water deficit, groundwater is considered as a supplemental source. Quasi-three-dimensional groundwater flow simulation by Visual MODFLOW was undertaken to study the groundwater behaviour. Further, combined simulation-optimization modelling was undertaken to determine the maximum permissible groundwater pumpage. An optimal land and water resources allocation model was then developed to determine the optimal cropping pattern realizing the maximum net annual return. The modelling results suggested that the net annual returns from the area can be increased by 51.3 and 12.5% at 10 and 90% PE levels, respectively, by adopting optimal cropping patterns and optimal pumping strategies. The adoption of optimal cropping patterns and optimal pumping strategies is strongly recommended for sustainable management of available land and water resources of the canal command.

Health in the City

2025/07/19 出版

Urban planning strategies have profound implications for public well-being, influencing factors such as air quality, access to green spaces, and the inclusivity of public spaces. Existing research emphasizes the importance of incorporating health considerations into urban planning to address challenges such as pollution, stress, and social inequities. A comprehensive scoping review was conducted, focusing on peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2023. The review process involved a systematic search across multiple databases, yielding an initial retrieval of 1,200 articles. After screening for relevance and conducting a full-text review, 20 key articles were selected for the final analysis. These articles were assessed for their methodological approaches, findings, and alignment with the SDGs. The review highlighted several critical themes. For example, 30% of the reviewed studies (6 out of 20) emphasized the detrimental impact of heavy metal pollution on public health, with a particular focus on urban areas like Ankara. Another 25% (5 out of 20) of the studies underscored the importance of green spaces in enhancing well-being in low- and middle-income countries.

Green Gold

Ingram 出版
2025/07/19 出版

Green Gold is a thorough and valuable compilation of information on Alabama's timber and forest products industry, the largest manufacturing industry in the state. Alabama has the third-largest commercial forest in the nation, after only Georgia and Oregon. Fully two-thirds of the state's land supports the growth of over fifteen billion trees on twenty-two million acres, which explains why Alabama looks entirely green from space. Green Gold presents the story of human use of and impact on Alabama's forests from pioneer days to the present, as James E. Fickle chronicles the history of the industry from unbridled greed and exploitation through virtual abandonment to revival, restoration, and enlightened stewardship. As the state's largest manufacturing industry, forest products have traditionally included naval stores such as tar, pitch, and turpentine, especially in the southern longleaf stands; sawmill lumber, both hardwood and pine; and pulp and paper milling. Green Gold documents all aspects of the industry, including the advent of "scientific forestry" and the development of reforestation practices with sustained yields. Also addressed are the historical impacts of Native Americans and of early settlers who used axes, saws, and water- and steam-powered sawmills to clear and utilize forests. Along with an account of railroad logging and the big mills of the lumber bonanza days of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the book also chronicles the arrival of professional foresters to the state, who began to deal with the devastating legacy of "cut out and get out" logging and to fight the perennial curse of woods arson. Finally, Green Gold examines the rise of the tree farm movement, the rebirth of large-scale lumbering, the advent of modern environmental concerns, and the movement toward the "Fourth Forest" in Alabama. Agro Forestrium Best Plants & Trees To Prevent Catastrophic Landslides Plus Strengthen Soil Structure

2025/07/18 出版

Landslides are a type of natural disaster that involve the downward movement of a mass of soil, rocks, and debris on a slope or hillside. They can occur in various forms, such as rockfalls, rockslides, mudslides, or debris flows, depending on the materials involved and the velocity of movement.Landslides are typically triggered by a combination of factors, including heavy rainfall, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, erosion, changes in groundwater level, slope instability, or human activities such as construction and deforestation. These factors can weaken the stability of the slope, causing it to fail and result in the movement of materials downslope. The destructive power of landslides can be significant, as they can damage or destroy structures, roads, and infrastructure in their path. They can also lead to loss of life and cause severe environmental damage, particularly when they occur in populated areas or near water bodies. To mitigate the risks associated with landslides, various measures can be taken, including slope stabilization techniques, land-use planning to avoid vulnerable areas, early warning systems, and emergency preparedness. It is important for communities living in landslide-prone areas to be aware of the potential hazards and take appropriate precautions to minimize the impact of such events. Certain plants and trees can play a role in preventing landslides by stabilizing slopes and reducing soil erosion.

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative

University P 出版
2025/07/17 出版

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) was a ten-year, $500 million research program to investigate the impacts of oil, dispersed oil, and dispersants on the ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Research institutions in the Gulf region and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) worked together to conduct applied and comprehensive scientific research on the Gulf of Mexico. GoMRI left behind a substantial body of scientific knowledge about oil spills and strengthened scientific capacity to respond to such calamities. In The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative: A Vision for Twenty-First-Century Science, Justin Shapiro writes the history of GoMRI and its role in organizing and facilitating a large-scale scientific response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Chapters in the book highlight the significance of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative in the history of maritime oil spills and outlines its mission. Subsequent chapters discuss GoMRI's adaptive management structure, transparent data policies, and extensive outreach efforts in the Gulf region. Finally, Shapiro emphasizes GoMRI's comprehensive synthesis of oil spill science and its impact on future scientific responses to major disasters. For this in-depth investigation, Shapiro spent years corresponding with the GoMRI Research Board, scientists who received funding from the Initiative, and other actors who played important roles in its history. Shapiro also provides insights into how a similar scientific initiative might be organized to improve society's ability to understand and act in the aftermath of ecological catastrophes. The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative serves as both a work of history and an instruction manual that can guide responses to future disasters.

MODFLOW-2005, the U.S. Geological Survey Modular Ground-Water Model - Documentation of Shared Node Local Grid Refinement (LGR) and the Boundary Flow and Head (BFH) Package

2025/07/17 出版

This report documents the addition of shared node Local Grid Refinement (LGR) to MODFLOW-2005, the U.S. Geological Survey modular, transient, three-dimensional, finite-difference ground-water flow model. LGR provides the capability to simulate ground-water flow using one block-shaped higher-resolution local grid (a child model) within a coarser-grid parent model. LGR accomplishes this by iteratively coupling two separate MODFLOW-2005 models such that heads and fluxes are balanced across the shared interfacing boundary. LGR can be used in two-and three-dimensional, steady-state and transient simulations and for simulations of confined and unconfined ground-water systems. Traditional one-way coupled telescopic mesh refinement (TMR) methods can have large, often undetected, inconsistencies in heads and fluxes across the interface between two model grids. The iteratively coupled shared-node method of LGR provides a more rigorous coupling in which the solution accuracy is controlled by convergence criteria defined by the user. In realistic problems, this can result in substantially more accurate solutions and require an increase in computer processing time. The rigorous coupling enables sensitivity analysis, parameter estimation, and uncertainty analysis that reflects conditions in both model grids. This report describes the method used by LGR, evaluates LGR accuracy and performance for two- and three-dimensional test cases, provides input instructions, and lists selected input and output files for an example problem. It also presents the Boundary Flow and Head (BFH) Package, which allows the child and parent models to be simulated independently using the boundary conditions obtained through the iterative process of LGR.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. How Should the Department of Defense Approach Environmental Security Implications of Climate Change

2025/07/17 出版

Environmental Security (ES) is a process for analyzing and responding to those environmental issues caused by anthropogenically driven environmental degradation. Climate change is a major ES threat having the potential to affect U.S. national security and thus has significant impact for the military national defense mission. This paper considers the most up-to-date climate change projections published by the IPCC, NASA, and the U.S. Global Change Program along with the latest national strategic guidance in order to determine actions required by the DoD. An overwhelming number of greenhouse models indicate considerable changes will affect U.S. national security during the mid 21st century. In addition, the study shows the DoD is currently at the onset of strategically organizing itself to analyze climate change impacts, provide combatant commanders with relevant mission preparedness information, and assess impacts to U.S. military installations of rising sea level/extreme weather events. Therefore, this study makes the following four recommendations: (1) ES must be a national security component, (2) DoD must establish an activity dedicated to develop ES related strategy, (3) Climate change data should be incorporated into a yearly Intelligence Environmental Estimate, (4) USJFCOM should take the lead in developing climate change related training scenarios. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Assessing Water Security in the Amu Darya River Basin, Afghanistan

2025/07/17 出版

New data and previous studies were used with quantitative analysis to assess Afghanistan's effect on water security in the Amu Darya river basin from 1995 to 2005. An event database constructed from open source news reporting and a geographic information system (GIS) of the basin combined to evaluate the basin's risk for water-related conflict relative to six factors: overall relations; population density, per capita income; freshwater treaty status; internationalization potential of the basin; and water development projects. The thesis evaluated the quantitative techniques employed for their utility in planning, executing, and assessing military operations in relation to water resources. Afghanistan's effect on water security marginally increased the risk of conflict over water while increasing non-water-related levels of cooperation among riparian neighbors. Population density and internationalization potential did not contribute to increased risk, but income level, treaty status, and development projects did contribute to increased risk for conflict. The techniques demonstrated their utility for military planners, principally at the operational and strategic levels as a tool for long-range assessment and monitoring. Tactical utility was found to be limited, but modifications to database and GIS layer development show potential for more use of the techniques in the tactical environment. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
