The Atlantic Ocean: Myths, Art, Science
A delightful and informative romp through five centuries of cultural, historical and visual discourse surrounding the North Atlantic Ocean The cold, dark waters of the North Atlantic Ocean have served as a stage for both real and imagined histories. Mirroring the flow of this vast expanse, The Atlantic Ocean highlights the continued coexistence of species, cultures and stories. Romantic paintings of stormy seas and shipwrecks by Turner and Constable are interspersed with more modern outlooks from Munch and Bergman. Historical maps are interlaced with contemporary works, including Allan Sekula's seminal photographic documentation of globalized trade in Fish Story (1988-95) and video installations by artists such as Joar Nango, featuring a projection screen constructed of halibut stomachs, the artist's modern interpretation of the older Sea-S獺mi practice of constructing windows of this material. The corresponding catalog explores the myths and realities of the Atlantic in visual culture, from the myth of Atlantis to the queer allure of sailor suits and the skills and traditions of contemporary Indigenous tribes.
Teaching Topological Relationships to children in the Early Years
This dissertation on 'Teaching topological relationships to children in the early years of primary school' focuses on the difficulties children have in the learning process, especially in forming concepts involving laterality, cardinal directions and other guiding principles. It is justified by the fact that many children have difficulties understanding topological relationships and relating lateral directions to cardinal directions (right/east, left/west, front/north and back/south). Also because of the difficulty of teaching geography in early childhood education and, consequently, the lack of importance given to geographical content. The text addresses the Activity Theory proposed by Leontiev, because it supports the foundations of the relationship between those who teach and those who learn. It explains the process of constructing concepts and understanding certain activities carried out in the school environment. Another basis is Vygotsky because he emphasises action and learning as a process that takes place from the outside in and is full of historicity.
Metamorphic Rocks of the Central Eastern Desert, Egypt
The central Eastern Desert of Egypt exhibits a diverse array of metamorphic rocks, forming part of the Pan-African orogenic belt. These rocks, primarily low to middle green schist facies, comprise metamorphic volcano-sedimentary sequences featuring metasediments like mudstones, pebbly mudstones, greywackes, and schists, alongside metavolcanics such as metabasalt, meta-andesite, and porphyrites. Petrochemical analyses suggest a mixed origin, with features of calc-alkaline and subalkaline rocks, with mature island arc volcanic rocks prevailing. The schists display various compositions and textures, including chlorite, epidote, biotite, graphite, hornblende, talc, and tremolite-actinolite schists. Petrographic studies hint at a shared origin or protolith among the schists, metasediments, and metavolcanics, evidenced by overlapping chemical compositions. These findings deepen our understanding of the geological evolution of the region, offering insights into the tectonic processes and depositional environments that have shaped the central Eastern Desert of Egypt within the broader Pan-African orogenic belt.
Thermal Performance of the Building Envelope
The correct design of the building envelope, including an informed choice of materials and their thermal properties, is a key requisite to conjugate energy efficiency, the durability of the envelope, and the indoor microclimate. Firstly, this process involves a strategic selection of building materials based on their thermal properties and performance. Designers should then adopt a multi-scale approach, both evaluating the thermal performance of individual envelope components and optimizing their overall energy efficiency. This activity should be assisted by reliable software tools that are also able to simulate advanced envelope solutions and must be complemented by effective and original evaluation methods to identify the best performing solution. In situ and laboratory measurements are recommended if possible since they can significantly improve the accuracy of the analysis. The following reprint presents advanced research and methodologies regarding the above-mentioned topics, ranging from the thermal performance of the building envelope to the energy optimization of buildings and the integration of renewable energies in the building envelope.

Mining Environment, Petroleum And Global Warming
Although mining in Kenya is still in its initial stages, the future expansion of operations into environmentally sensitive and fragile areas is likely to exacerbate environmental destruction and negatively impact basic ecosystem services and biodiversity. Sustainable mining practices involve government policies that prioritize environmental preservation, protect indigenous cultures, and promote the welfare of local communities. Proper management of mineral resources can offer significant benefits, including economic growth and regional development, provided that environmental and safety concerns are adequately addressed. In our modern technological world, we face imminent environmental challenges due to climate change and global warming. The survival of humankind is at risk, and there is deep concern about the rapid depletion of resources essential to our way of life. The rich, driven by greed, and the poor, driven by necessity, have collectively contributed to the reckless exploitation of Earth's assets. Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, often attributed to changes in the sun's activity, which result in global warming.

Florida Springs
An indispensable resource for learning about the freshwater wonders of Florida Florida is home to over 1,000 freshwater springs, natural wonders that have drawn people to enjoy and interact with them over the course of millennia. This book provides a clear and comprehensive overview of the geography, history, science, and politics of the springs, informing readers about the deep past and current issues facing these treasures of the Florida landscape. Christopher Meindl explains the unique physical features of Florida's springs, including the "swiss cheese" structure of the state's aquifers and the complexities of its groundwater hydrology, providing helpful maps, graphs, and photos. Meindl discusses how ancient and modern people have used the springs--as centers of communities, therapeutic spas, roadside attractions, parks, and more. He addresses contemporary threats to the springs in areas such as water flow, water quality, and overcrowding. Finally, he explores recent state policies, the activism of environmentalists, and current and potential restoration projects that seek to prevent springs degradation. Meindl brings to light a struggle for truth among scientists, politicians, and businesspeople about the causes of problems the springs face today. Challenging oversimplified answers and looking at multiple hypotheses, Meindl raises intriguing questions that will inspire readers to join the ongoing discussion about how best to protect and restore Florida's iconic freshwater sanctuaries.
Essay on the epistemology of planning disciplines
Where does planning begin and end as a field of research and action? Answering this question is a challenge, probably even more so in the first case (field of research) than in the second (field of action), so much so that planning is sometimes confused with urbanism, architecture, geography, civil engineering, design (interior and industrial), planning, etc. To this difficulty is added another, that of defining or rather precisely identifying the theoretical frameworks on which planning research is based, which seems to forage here and there rather than rely on a clearly identified corpus. It is in this context that we have drawn on three theses from different disciplines to better define the specificity of planning disciplines. In order to gain a better understanding of the nature and content of theses from different disciplines, we will first present the main epistemological currents, and then focus our analysis on the content of theses from the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Faculty of Planning.
Ribeir瓊o Grande
With his work entitled Ribeir瓊o Grande: Natural Dynamics and their Production of Geographical Space, Professor Anderson Peretto aimed to understand the natural elements and the organisation of geographical space, taking as his starting point the Ribeir瓊o Grande Hydrographic Basin, a tributary of the left bank of the Teles Pires river, located to the south of the municipality of Sorriso, in the northern region of the state of Mato Grosso. The study area is located in the heart of Mato Grosso's Cerrado, a biome which, due to the incessant use of mechanised agriculture, has seen a high rate of environmental degradation, which justifies the relevance of the research. Territorial reorganisation in the Cerrado areas of Mato Grosso's plateaus is directly linked to the physical potential of these areas, which currently stand out as important grain-producing regions. The activities developed on the plateau lands of Mato Grosso have earned the state recognition as an agro-exporter. In the context of capitalist production, the research carried out an environmental analysis of the Ribeir瓊o Grande Hydrographic Basin, considering the relationship between the morphometric aspects of different land uses and socio-spatial production.
Geographies of Displacement/s
This book assembles cutting edge contemporary research and thinking on multiple forms and meanings of displacements and their geographies: patterns of shifting, dislocation, or putting out of place; substitutions of one idea for another or the unconscious transfer of intense feelings or emotions; activities occurring outside their normal context; and replacements of one thing by another. The COVID-19 pandemic, declared by the World Health Organization in 2020, produced new displacements and intensified existing patterns of displacement and dispossession. At the same time, socionatural displacements - floods, fires, droughts, hurricanes, sea-level rise, species loss, and dislocation - were the backdrop to the displaced and deferred hopes of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference. The chapters in this volume contend with how we as geographers conceptualize and theorize displacements; the range of sites, spaces, processes, affects, scales, and actors we study with to understand them; and what is at stake politically in how we research displacements. It is also a pandemic archive of academic labor, in which we find traces of displacements within and beyond the academic discipline of geography.Geographies of Displacement/s will be of particular interest to students, scholars and researchers of Geography including those interested in human geography, socio-natural displacements, and the politics of migration and displacement. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Annals of the American Association of Geographers.

Formation and Evolution of the Continental Crust in North China Craton during Precambrian
The North China Craton (NCC) preserves ancient rocks dating back to ca. 3.8 Ga, and has witnessed multiple magmatic-metamorphic events during the Archean-Proterozoic era. This critical period may have marked the transformation of the geodynamic regime on early Earth. As a result, the NCC serves as an ideal natural laboratory for deciphering the growth and evolution of continental crust, the onset of plate tectonics, and the architecture of the Archean geodynamic regime. To better understand the geological evolution of the NCC during the Precambrian, we collected 11 contributions for this Special Issue.

Cycling in the Autonomous District of Greater Lom矇 (Togo)
Since 2000, cities in sub-Saharan Africa have been undergoing metropolization marked by urban sprawl and increasing human concentration, posing major mobility challenges. To meet these challenges, public authorities have initiated road infrastructure development policies. Between 2010 and 2018, 810 km of roads were upgraded in the Greater Lom矇 Autonomous District. However, cyclists are poorly represented and marginalized during these works. This study aims to understand the reasons for the low use of bicycles in this metropolis and to propose strategies for improving this soft mode of transport. The methodology combines a literature review on cycling mobility and field analyses based on observations, surveys and interviews. The main obstacles identified were oppressive heat, longer distances between the city center and the outskirts, negative perceptions of cycling, and the absence of bicycle lanes. Currently, 99.37% of the city's streets have no bicycle lanes, and those that do exist are often impassable.

Responding to Environmental Issues through Adaptive Collaborative Management
Focused on forest management and governance, this book examines two decades of experience with Adaptive Collaborative Management (ACM), assessing both its uses and improvements needed to address global environmental issues. The volume argues that the activation and the empowerment of local peoples are critical to addressing current environmental challenges and that this must be enhanced by linking and extending such stewardship to global and national policymakers and actors on a broader scale. This can be achieved by employing ACM's participatory approach, characterized by conscious efforts among stakeholders to communicate, collaborate, negotiate and seek out opportunities to learn collectively about the impacts of their action. The case studies presented here reflect decades of experience working with forest communities in three Indonesian Islands and four African countries. Researchers and practitioners who participated in CIFOR's early ACM work had the rare opportunity to return to their research sites decades later to see what has happened. These authors reflect critically on their own experience and local site conditions to glean insights that guide us in more effectively addressing climate change and other forest-related challenges. They showcase how global and regional actors will have to work more closely with smallholders, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, recognizing the key local roles in forest stewardship. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars and practitioners working in the fields of conservation, forest management, community development, natural resource management and development studies more broadly. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.
