Asteroid Belt History and Terrestrial Bombardment

The main asteroid belt, spanning approximately 2-4 AU in heliocentric distance, serves as a sparse repository of rocky debris, offering invaluable insights into the solar system's past. Evidence drawn from the dynamical structure of both the main belt and the Kuiper belt beyond Neptune suggests a narrative of planetary migration, wherein the giant planets initially existed in a more compact formation before experiencing migration driven by planetesimals. This migration event swept both mean motion and secular resonances across the main asteroid belt, inducing a rise in asteroid eccentricity and depletion of the belt itself. Examination of present-day distributions of large main belt asteroids aligns with this narrative, offering further support for resonance sweeping during the epoch of giant planet migration. Utilizing an analytical model of ν6 secular resonance sweeping, constraints on Saturn's migration speed can be inferred. Post-migration, dynamical chaos emerged as the primary loss mechanism for asteroids with diameters exceeding 10 km, with a logarithmic decay law effectively describing the dynamical loss history of test particles from this region. This model implies a potential decline in the rate of impacts from large asteroids over the last approximately 3 billion years, suggesting a present-day impact flux significantly lower than previously estimated, impacting crater chronologies and hazard risk assessments. Additionally, quantification of the solar wind's 6Li/7Li ratio reflects the influx of chondritic material and enhanced dust production during planetesimal-driven giant planet migration, contributing to the current depletion of lithium in the solar photosphere relative to chondrites. The expectation of 6Li being less abundant in the sun compared to 7Li due to differing nuclear reaction rates further supports this narrative. Furthermore, evidence pointing to a short-lived impact cataclysm affecting the entire inner solar system may be discernible in t

"(...) in 2019 alone, over 1.5 billion tourist arrivals were registered (...) with a growing importance of domestic tourism." The interdependence between the increase in travel and the economic importance of tourism has been proven. Looking at the situation before the virus, it can be seen that the tourism industry contributed over 10% to global economic output. Furthermore, over 230 million jobs depend on tourism, which accounts for around 9% of global employment. As a result, it is no secret that the tourism industry is a highly profitable source of income and has the ability to combat poverty and stimulate the regional economy. The latter will be examined in more detail in the next section in order to create essential foundations for the further course of the work. Since the focus of this work is on the United States, the aim is to provide a brief insight into the American tourism industry. When evaluating the overall economic production value of the tourism sector, the World Travel & Tourism Council was able to determine that the USA occupied first place by a significant margin in 2007 and was able to maintain this position 10 years later with an increase of 44.94 % . But when it comes to travel spending, Americans also took first place in 2005 with a total of around 82 billion dollars, and they took relatively significantly more trips within their home country. The reason for this lies primarily in the richness of the diverse climate zones and landscapes.

Renewable energy technology is steadily gaining importance in the energy market because of the limited nature of fossil fuels, as well as the political pressures to reduce carbon emissions. To ensure sustainable development, adequate and affordable energy should be made available to satisfy the demand of electric energy. The University of Cape Town (UCT) collaborated with the International Research Institute Stavanger, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Faith University, and Ain Shames University to develop a scaled down prototype of an advanced power generation system with minimum carbon emission. The upscaled model would be decentralized with a target plantsizeof10 MW to serve a small industrial community with drinking water production of 1000 m3/d. UCT was tasked with the design and development of the High Speed Permanent Magnet (HSPM) Generator subsystem, in collaboration with the UCT Electrical/Mechanical Engineering Department, to be coupled to a micro-gas turbine with a blended fuel mix which includes hydrogen, biogas and biodiesel. The main specifications of the HSPM generator are a rated speed of 30000 RPM and a power output of 10 kW. However, HSPM generators produce substantial heat especially at high operating speeds and make the thermal management of these machines difficult and complicated resulting in temperature rise which leads to demagnetization, damaged insulation, bearing starvation and reduced power output and efficiency. This book presents the design and development of the HSPM generator and focuses on both the mechanical and electrical aspects for the Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) and Surfaced-Mounted Permanent Magnet (SPM) topologies of the HSPM generator. In particular, it is the effect of coolant velocity to enhance the HSPM generator efficiency that makes it the subject of this research.

The development of the Seahog started in 2010. It is a third generation tethered underwater Remotely-Operated Vehicle currently in development by the Robotics and Agents Research Lab (RARL) within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Cape Town. The Seahog was established as an overhaul of two previous ROVs developed by various students within the same lab. The reason for building an in house ROV was to develop a cheap alternative to commercial offerings to specifically meet the needs described by the marine biology group at the University of Cape Town. They wanted an ROV mainly for marine life observation with a possibility of small sample collection. The Seahog was started by two master's degree students after it was deemed unfeasible to improve upon the Challenger I or Robin (the names given to the two previous ROVs). Development of the open-frame ROV Seahog was then commenced. This design was perceived to be a better design compared with the two previous ROVs' which were torpedo-shaped. This design choice offered more in terms of adaptability and maintenance as each functional feature was contained in its own module separate from other modules. For example, the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) is housed in its own module, so in case of a navigation feedback breakdown, debugging would be easier to perform. Table 1 shows some of the specifications or characteristics of each of the three ROVs developed by the RARL lab over the years.

Therefore, the focus of this dissertation pertains to potable water treatment only and its emphasis is on the following aspects: - Raw water quality: What should one test for in the raw water, when and why should you test for it and how can it be removed or used to inform the process design. - Process design: A user friendly excel based software model has been developed by the author, that enables the user to perform a process design that should be able to adequately treat most surface waters (from rivers and dams). Water is a precious and limited resource that plays a vital role in sustaining life on earth. Also, 60% of an adult human body consists of water and if not consumed in sufficient amounts, can lead to dehydration, and ultimately result in fatality. However, water does not only fulfil a critical survival need. It is also used in many other applications. For example, in the municipal sphere water is used for various other purposes, such as bathing, brushing of teeth, washing of clothes, transporting excrement (in the form of wastewater), preparing food, watering of gardens, to name but a few. In the industrial sector water can be used for cooling, food and drink production, washing etc. The list goes on and on. The energy policy shaping space is influenced by the demands of sustainability goals, associated with the complexity of the socio-economic and biophysical systems. Rising fossil fuel prices, societal impacts of energy use and observed climate change make the exploration of renewable energy more important than ever (Kowalski et al., 2008). This paradigm shift, combined with the considerable amount of infrastructure and investment required for renewable energy, has led to an increasing presence of private and institutional investors including insurers, exposed to various risks. According to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), world energy consumption will grow by 48% between the period 2012-2040 (US EIA, 2017: online). This trend is attributable to strong economic growth emerging from Non- Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries (US EIA, 2017: online), including South Africa. Working as an alternative to fossil fuels, renewable energy technologies will play an integral role in meeting the world's growing energy demand adding to the global energy mix (IRENA, 2016:14). Furthermore, the share of renewables in the global energy mix can be cost-effectively doubled by 2030 using existing technologies. Along with energy conservation practices, an overall improvement in the global energy profile can be achieved which would significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and put the world on track to limit global mean temperature rise to below 2簞 Celsius (IRENA, 2016:14). This level of renewable energy deployment means scaling up current investment in renewables to 500 billion US dollars (USD) per year by 2020. Global investment must then reach USD 900 billion each year up to 2030 (IRENA, 2016:14). Almost two-thirds of this investment would be in the power sector, but renewables for heat and transport also need to grow significantly. Landslides can cause extensive property damage and human casualties and thus influence socio-economic conditions in many countries. In recent decades, there has been a significant increase in the frequency of landslides related to climate change and the expansion of urbanized areas. The level of risk from landslides depends, among other things, on the distribution and typology of these processes and the temporal probability of these processes affecting a unit of land. Therefore, spatial mapping of these processes and knowing their frequency or temporal reactivation would provide valuable information to help us predict the hazard of these geological processes and thus evaluate the associated risks in certain areas. While it is possible to conduct landslide studies by direct ground observation, data collection in inaccessible and extensive land is time-consuming and expensive and can sometimes be very difficult. Remote sensing images (aerial, satellite, or terrestrial) are increasingly used in different landslide investigations, thus allowing the spatial and multi-temporal mapping of these processes, offering detailed monitoring of changes in the ground surface, and allowing data to obtain factors to be used in the assessment of landslide hazards.
