Hydrology and Ground-Water Quality in the Mine Workings Within the Picher Mining District, Northeastern Oklahoma, 2002-03

2025/07/31 出版

The Picher mining district of northeastern Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was a major site of mining for lead and zinc ores in the first half of the 20th century. The primary source of lead and zinc were sulfide minerals disseminated in the cherty limestones and dolomites of the Boone Formation of Mississippian age, which comprises the Boone aquifer. Ground water in the aquifer and seeping to surface water in the district has been contaminated by sulfate, iron, lead, zinc, and several other metals. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, investigated hydrology and ground-water quality in the mine workings in the mining district, as part of the process to aid water managers and planners in designing remediation measures that may restore the environmental quality of the district to pre-mining conditions. Most ground-water levels underlying the mining district had similar altitudes, indicating a large degree of hydraulic connection in the mine workings and overlying aquifer materials. Recharge-age dates derived from concentrations of chlorofluorocarbons and other dissolved gases indicated that water in the Boone aquifer may flow slowly from the northeast and southeast portions of the mining district. However, recharge-age dates may have been affected by the types of sites sampled, with more recent recharge-age dates being associated with mine-shafts, which are more prone to atmospheric interactions and surface runoff than the sampled airshafts. Water levels in streams upstream from the confluence of Tar and Lytle Creeks were several feet higher than those in adjacent portions of the Boone aquifer, perhaps due to low-permeability streambed sediments and indicating the streams may be losing water to the aquifer in this area. From just upstream to downstream from the confluence of Tar and Lytle Creeks, surface-water elevations in these streams were less than those in the surrounding Boone aquifer, indicating that seepage from the aquifer to downstream portions of Tar Creek was much more likely. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Sidescan-Sonar Imagery, Multibeam Bathymetry, and Surficial Geologic Interpretations of the Sea Floor in Rhode Island Sound, off Sakonnet Point, Rhode Island

2025/07/31 出版

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is working with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to interpret the surficial geology in estuaries and sounds along the northeastern coast of the United States. This report interprets the area covered by NOAA Survey H11320, about 72 km? of sea floor in eastern Rhode Island Sound (RIS), located about 8 km south of Sakonnet Point, Rhode Island (fig. 1). Previous work in RIS includes studies of both sea-floor processes and subsurface geologic framework. McMaster (1960) mapped surficial sediment samples in Narragansett Bay and RIS and McMaster and others (1968) conducted a seismic-reflection survey in Block Island Sound and RIS. O'Hara and Oldale (1980) collected seismic-reflection profiles, sidescan-sonar data, and vibracores in eastern RIS (fig. 2). They interpreted the geologic history, assessed sand and gravel resources, and evaluated the mining impact of these resources. McMaster's (1960) interpretation of the surficial sediment within this study area consisted of sand with several isolated areas of gravel. Several other sediment samples were previously obtained within the study area: three National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) dredge samples from 1942 consisted of sand and one National Ocean Service (NOS) sample from 1939 was rocky (fig. 2; Poppe and others, 2003). The purpose of this report is to define the sea-floor morphology and sedimentary environments and interpret processes occurring on the sea floor using sidescan-sonar imagery, multibeam bathymetry, and historic seismic-reflection profiles. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. A Compilation of Spatial Digital Databases for Selected U.S. Geological Survey Nonfuel Mineral Resource Assessments for Parts of Idaho and Montana

2025/07/31 出版

This report compiles selected results from 13 U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) mineral resource assessment studies conducted in Idaho and Montana into consistent spatial databases that can be used in a geographic information system. The 183 spatial databases represent areas of mineral potential delineated in these studies and include attributes on mineral deposit type, level of mineral potential, certainty, and a reference. The assessments were conducted for five 1? x 2? quadrangles (Butte, Challis, Choteau, Dillon, and Wallace), several U.S. Forest Service (USFS) National Forests (including Challis, Custer, Gallatin, Helena, and Payette), and one Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Resource Area (Dillon). The data contained in the spatial databases are based on published information: no new interpretations are made. This digital compilation is part of an ongoing effort to provide mineral resource information formatted for use in spatial analysis. In particular, this is one of several reports prepared to address USFS needs for science information as forest management plans are revised in the Northern Rocky Mountains. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The European Union's (EU) Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is a cornerstone of the EU's efforts to meet its obligation under the Kyoto Protocol. It covers more than 10,000 energy intensive facilities across the 27 EU Member countries; covered entities emit about 45% of the EU's carbon dioxide emissions. A "Phase 1" trading period began January 1, 2005. A second, Phase 2, trading period began in 2008, covering the period of the Kyoto Protocol. A Phase 3 will begin in 2013 designed to reduce emissions by 21% from 2005 levels. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Implementation of the Next Generation Attenuation (NGA) Ground-Motion Prediction Equations in Fortran and R

2025/07/31 出版

This report presents two methods for implementing the earthquake ground-motion prediction equations released in 2008 as part of the Next Generation Attenuation of Ground Motions (NGA-West, or NGA) project coordinated by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER). These models were developed for predicting ground-motion parameters for shallow crustal earthquakes in active tectonic regions (such as California). Of the five ground-motion prediction equations (GMPEs) developed during the NGA project, four models are implemented: the GMPEs of Abrahamson and Silva (2008), Boore and Atkinson (2008), Campbell and Bozorgnia (2008), and Chiou and Youngs (2008a); these models are abbreviated as AS08, BA08, CB08, and CY08, respectively. Since site response is widely recognized as an important influence of ground motions, engineering applications typically require that such effects be modeled. The model of Idriss (2008) is not implemented in our programs because it does not explicitly include site response, whereas the other four models include site response and use the same variable to describe the site condition (VS30). We do not intend to discourage the use of the Idriss (2008) model, but we have chosen to implement the other four NGA models in our programs for those users who require ground-motion estimates for various site conditions. We have implemented the NGA models by using two separate programming languages: Fortran and R (R Development Core Team, 2010). Fortran, a compiled programming language, has been used in the scientific community for decades. R is an object-oriented language and environment for statistical computing that is gaining popularity in the statistical and scientific community. Derived from the S language and environment developed at Bell Laboratories, R is an open-source language that is freely available at http: //www.r-project.org/ (last accessed 11 January 2011). In R, the functions for computing the NGA equations can be loaded as anThis work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Petroleum Geology and Resources of the North Caspian Basin, Kazakhstan and Russia

2025/07/31 出版

The North Caspian basin is a petroleum-rich but lightly explored basin located in Kazakhstan and Russia. It occupies the shallow northern portion of the Caspian Sea and a large plain to the north of the sea between the Volga and Ural Rivers and farther east to the Mugodzhary Highland, which is the southern continuation of the Ural foldbelt. The basin is bounded by the Paleozoic carbonate platform of the Volga-Ural province to the north and west and by the Ural, South Emba, and Karpinsky Hercynian foldbelts to the east and south. The basin was originated by pre-Late Devonian rifting and subsequent spreading that opened the oceanic crust, but the precise time of these tectonic events is not known. The sedimentary succession of the basin is more than 20 km thick in the central areas. The drilled Upper Devonian to Tertiary part of this succession includes a prominent thick Kungurian (uppermost Lower Permian) salt formation that separates strata into the subsalt and suprasalt sequences and played an important role in the formation of oil and gas fields. Shallow-shelf carbonate formations that contain various reefs and alternate with clastic wedges compose the subsalt sequence on the 1 basin margins. Basinward, these rocks grade into deep-water anoxic black shales and turbidites. The Kungurian salt formation is strongly deformed into domes and intervening depressions. The most active halokinesis occurred during Late Permian?Triassic time, but growth of salt domes continued later and some of them are exposed on the present-day surface. The suprasalt sequence is mostly composed of clastic rocks that are several kilometers thick in depressions between salt domes. A single total petroleum system is defined in the North Caspian basin. Discovered reserves are about 19.7 billion barrels of oil and natural gas liquids and 157 trillion cubic feet of gas. Much of the reserves are concentrated in the supergiant Tengiz, Karachaganak, and Astrakhan fields. A recent new oil discovery on the Kashagan structure offshore in the Caspian Sea is probably also of the supergiant status. Major oil and gas reserves are located in carbonate reservoirs in reefs and structural traps of the subsalt sequence. Substantially smaller reserves are located in numerous fields in the suprasalt sequence. These suprasalt fields are largely in shallow Jurassic and Cretaceous clastic reservoirs in salt dome-related traps. Petroleum source rocks are poorly identified by geochemical methods. However, geologic data indicate that the principal source rocks are Upper Devonian to Lower Permian deep-water black-shale facies stratigraphically correlative to shallow-shelf carbonate platforms on the basin margins. The main stage of hydrocarbon generation was probably in Late Permian and Triassic time, during deposition of thick orogenic clastics. Generated hydrocarbons migrated laterally into adjacent subsalt reservoirs and vertically, through depressions between Kungurian salt domes where the salt is thin or absent, into suprasalt clastic reservoirs. Six assessment units have been identified in the North Caspian basin. Four of them include Paleozoic subsalt rocks of the basin margins, and a fifth unit, which encompasses the entire total petroleum system area, includes the suprasalt sequence. All five of these assessment units are underexplored and have significant potential for new discoveries. Most undiscovered petroleum resources are expected in Paleozoic subsalt carbonate rocks. The assessment unit in subsalt rocks with the greatest undiscovered potential occupies the south basin margin. Petroleum potential of suprasalt rocks is lower; however, discoveries of many small to medium size fields are expected. The sixth identified assessment unit embraces subsalt rocks of the central basin areas. The top of subsalt rocks in these areas occurs at depths rangingThis work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civi...

Reconnaissance Geology of the Wadi Dhahaban Quadrangle, Sheet 18/41 D, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

2025/07/31 出版

The Wadi Dhahaban quadrangle (sheet 18/41 D) lies between lat 18?00? and 18?30' N. and long 41?30' and 42?00' E. and encompasses an area of 2,937 km2 located along the Red Sea coast and includes part of the escarpment-mountains province. The geologic formations exposed in the quadrangle are comprised of Precambrian layered and intrusive rocks, Tertiary gabbro dikes, Quaternary basaltic lavas and pyroclastic rocks, and Quaternary surficial deposits. No economic mineral deposits have been found. The Precambrian rocks include layered sedimentary and volcanic rocks that have been assigned to the Baish, Bahah, and Ablah groups. They have been folded, metamorphosed, and invaded by three separate intrusions. The Precambrian rocks are cut by Miocene gabbro dikes that were intruded during the initial stages of the opening of the Red Sea rift. The Quaternary rocks include basalt, and coastal, pediment, and alluvial deposits of various kinds. The area is of special interest because of its unique display of the Tertiary and Quaternary basaltic volcanism that was associated with the opening of the Red Sea rift and that has continued in other parts of the Kingdom until historic times. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. California Drought

Betsy,Cody  著
2025/07/31 出版

California experienced severe water supply shortages in 2009, which led to economic disruption across the state, including concentrated losses in agricultural areas in the western portion of the Central Valley-areas already experiencing declines in the housing industry and the economic downturn in general. At the same time, several fish species whose habitat lie at the heart of California's water supply system and throughout its northern rivers are in decline and some face the possibility of extinction. This situation too has had economic implications, resulting in job and income losses in northern California. The short-term issue for Congress is how to evaluate demands for increasing water supplies that may help some users but may jeopardize the continued existence of several fish species. A longer-term issue for Congress is how to evaluate management alternatives that will protect species, but also help water users and economies that depend on reliable water supplies and healthy ecosystems. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Chaos of Katrina

2025/07/31 出版

This study is a case study of federal logistics support during Hurricane Katrina disaster relief operations. Data from federal contracts covering the first ten weeks of Katrina are used to measure federal logistics activity. The study investigates whether chaos theory, part of complexity science, can extract information from Katrina contracting data to help managers make better logistics decisions during disaster relief. The study uses three analytical techniques: embedding, fitting the data to a logistic equation, and plotting the limit-cycle. Embedding and fitting a logistic equation to the data were used to test for deterministic chaos. The logistic equation and two versions of the limit-cycle model developed by Priesmeyer, Baik and Cole were also tested as potential management tools. This study found deterministic chaos was present during the first week of disaster relief, but inconclusive results for subsequent weeks possibly due to internal changes to the relief dynamics. The research concludes that the initial conditions and early actions will have a significant affect on disaster relief outcome. Furthermore, many events that appear to be uncontrollable and random may actually be controllable. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Geographical Overview of the Three Gorges Dam and Reservoir, China

2025/07/31 出版

The Three Gorges Dam and Reservoir on the Yangtze River, China, has been an ambitious and controversial project. The dam, the largest in the world as of 2008, will provide hydropower, help to manage flood conditions, and increase the navigability of the Yangtze River. However, this massive project has displaced human and animal populations and altered the stability of the banks of the Yangtze, and it may intensify the seismic hazard of the area. It has also hindered archeological investigations in the reservoir and dam area. This report, originally in the form of a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, gives a short history and overview of the dam construction and subsequent consequences, especially geologic hazards already noted or possible in the future. The report provides photographs, diagrams, and references for the reader's further research - a necessity, because this great undertaking is dynamic, and both its problems and successes continue to evolve. The challenges and consequences of Three Gorges Dam will be closely watched and documented as lessons learned and applied to future projects in China and elsewhere. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Frederick Schwarz examines the relationship between deforestation and the diminishing water flow of the Rock River during the early 20th century. This study, originally published in 1903, provides an early analysis of the environmental impact of human activities on natural resources. Schwarz meticulously details the geographical and ecological factors contributing to the river's reduced flow, offering insights into the importance of forest conservation. This historical document serves as a valuable resource for environmental scientists, historians, and anyone interested in the ecological history of the American Midwest. Its findings remain relevant today, highlighting the long-term consequences of deforestation and the necessity of sustainable resource management. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Indonesia

2025/07/31 出版

In recognition of growing United States interest in environmental diplomacy and security as a part of U.S. foreign policy and the fact that Indonesia holds much of the world's natural resources, the purpose of this paper is to show how Indonesia's environmental problems are causing instability in the region and could lead to increased U.S. involvement in the region. The paper assesses Indonesia's environmental situation, its capabilities to handle environmental issues, and then explores environmental security issues that could cause internal and international conflict. The methodology used in researching this paper was limited to a literature review of material published primarily since 1994, on-line Internet resources, current newspapers, and radio and television news reports. The research found that the major environmental problems center on the effects of rapid urbanization, deforestation, and both marine and land pollution. While there is a well-established environmental infrastructure in place, there are still examples of both internal and international conflicts due to Indonesia's environmental problems. A 1997 forest fire in Indonesia was considered a planetary disaster and caused smoke and haze that lasted for months across Southeast Asia. The long-term implications include health problems for more than 20 million people and that threat of future legal action by neighboring countries. This environmentally-induced instability could lead to increased U.S. involvement in the region to protect U.S. national security interests. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Geologic Map of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park Region, Tennessee and North Carolina

2025/07/31 出版

The geology of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GSMNP) region of Tennessee and North Carolina was studied from 1993 to 2003 as part of a cooperative investigation with the National Park Service (NPS). This work has been compiled as a 1:100,000-scale map derived from mapping done at 1:24,000 and 1:62,500 scale. The geologic data are intended to support cooperative investigations with NPS, the development of a new soil map by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (http: //www.discoverlifeinamerica.org/). At the request of NPS, we mapped areas previously not visited, revised the geology where stratigraphic and structural problems existed, and developed a map database for use in interdisciplinary research, land management, and interpretive programs for park visitors. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
