Urban Regeneration
Many aspects come into play when addressing urban regeneration issues, and various interventions are needed to ensure cities are resilient and prepared to respond to environmental, economic, and social challenges. Resilience is understood as a "cross-cutting condition" in the reorganisation of a city, as the ability to provide adaptive and timely responses to numerous challenges and adverse events. Land consumption, characterised by the expansion of artificial cover for residential, manufacturing, and infrastructure purposes, is a worrying trend globally. There is a need to monitor and formulate strategies to mitigate land consumption and safeguard ecosystem services. Only through joint actions will cities be prepared to address key land vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change: drought and water scarcity, heat waves in urban areas, unconventional events, and hydrogeological risk. This Special Issue aims to identify contextual actions that can reduce land consumption, promote de-impermeabilization, and encourage re-naturalisation, focusing on enhancing ecosystem services in land use activities. Therefore, it focuses on understanding the contributions of ecosystem services, landscape restoration and green infrastructure for climate mitigation, and land use reduction in urban regeneration processes.

Modeling Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport in Fractured Aquifers
The hybrid discrete fracture network/equivalent porous medium (DFN/EPM) model was selected for analysis and application to simulate a contaminated site in this study. The DFN/EPM was selected because it appeared to have the potential to aid decision making by remedial project managers at contaminated DoD fractured aquifer sites. This model can use data that are typically available at a site while incorporating the important processes relevant to describing contaminant transport in a fractured medium. California Drought
California experienced severe water supply shortages in 2009, which led to economic disruption across the state, including concentrated losses in agricultural areas in the western portion of the Central Valley-areas already experiencing declines in the housing industry and the economic downturn in general. At the same time, several fish species whose habitat lie at the heart of California's water supply system and throughout its northern rivers are in decline and some face the possibility of extinction. This situation too has had economic implications, resulting in job and income losses in northern California. The short-term issue for Congress is how to evaluate demands for increasing water supplies that may help some users but may jeopardize the continued existence of several fish species. A Practical Primer on Geostatistics
THE CHALLENGE Most geological phenomena are extraordinarily complex in their interrelationships and vast in their geographical extension. Ordinarily, engineers and geoscientists are faced with corporate or scientific requirements to properly prepare geological models with measurements involving a small fraction of the entire area or volume of interest. Exact description of a system such as an oil reservoir is neither feasible nor economically possible. The results are necessarily uncertain. Note that the uncertainty is not an intrinsic property of the systems; it is the result of incomplete knowledge by the observer. THE AIM OF GEOSTATISTICS The main objective of geostatistics is the characterization of spatial systems that are incompletely known, systems that are common in geology. A key difference from classical statistics is that geostatistics uses the sampling location of every measurement. Unless the measurements show spatial correlation, the application of geostatistics is pointless. Ordinarily the need for additional knowledge goes beyond a few points, which explains the display of results graphically as fishnet plots, block diagrams, and maps. GEOSTATISTICAL METHODS Geostatistics is a collection of numerical techniques for the characterization of spatial attributes using primarily two tools: probabilistic models, which are used for spatial data in a manner similar to the way in which time-series analysis characterizes temporal data, or pattern recognition techniques. The probabilistic models are used as a way to handle uncertainty in results away from sampling locations, making a radical departure from alternative approaches like inverse distance estimation methods. DIFFERENCES WITH TIME SERIES On dealing with time-series analysis, users frequently concentrate their attention on extrapolations for making forecasts. Although users of geostatistics may be interested in extrapolation, the methods work at their best interpolating. California Drought
California experienced severe water supply shortages in 2009, which led to economic disruption across the state, including concentrated losses in agricultural areas in the western portion of the Central Valley-areas already experiencing declines in the housing industry and the economic downturn in general. At the same time, several fish species whose habitat lie at the heart of California's water supply system and throughout its northern rivers are in decline and some face the possibility of extinction. This situation too has had economic implications, resulting in job and income losses in northern California. The short-term issue for Congress is how to evaluate demands for increasing water supplies that may help some users but may jeopardize the continued existence of several fish species. In recognition of growing United States interest in environmental diplomacy and security as a part of U.S. foreign policy and the fact that Indonesia holds much of the world's natural resources, the purpose of this paper is to show how Indonesia's environmental problems are causing instability in the region and could lead to increased U.S. involvement in the region. The paper assesses Indonesia's environmental situation, its capabilities to handle environmental issues, and then explores environmental security issues that could cause internal and international conflict. The methodology used in researching this paper was limited to a literature review of material published primarily since 1994, on-line Internet resources, current newspapers, and radio and television news reports. The research found that the major environmental problems center on the effects of rapid urbanization, deforestation, and both marine and land pollution. While there is a well-established environmental infrastructure in place, there are still examples of both internal and international conflicts due to Indonesia's environmental problems. A 1997 forest fire in Indonesia was considered a planetary disaster and caused smoke and haze that lasted for months across Southeast Asia. The long-term implications include health problems for more than 20 million people and that threat of future legal action by neighboring countries. Forecasting Wet Microbursts Associated With Summertime Airmass Thunderstorms Over the Southeastern United States
This thesis seeks to develop a technique to forecast wet microbursts using currently operational technology, including upper air soundings and WSR-88D products. The technique developed is comprised of three distinct phases. First, recognize the potential threat for given environmental conditions. Second, predict the maximum outflow velocities from microbursts using predictive equations. Third, highlight key NEXRAD radar products that demonstrate a strong potential to serve as precursors to microburst formation. Geology and Nonfuel Mineral Deposits of Greenland, Europe, Russia, and Northern Central Asia
This report summarizes the geology and nonfuel mineral resources of Greenland, Europe, Russia, and Northern Central Asia and is a preliminary part of a major U.S. Geological Survey study called the Global Mineral Resource Assessment Project. This report is one of a series of regional reports covering the world and provides basic data on the identified resources and geologic setting, together with a brief appraisal of the potential for undiscovered mineral resources. The data in the regional report are derived from published information. An important source of data on production statistics, economic factors that affect the mineral industries, and historical information, is available in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) publications Minerals Yearbook and the annual Mineral Commodity Summaries (available at http: //minerals.usgs.gov/minerals). In terms of production of metallic commodities and industrial minerals in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey, 2003, 2004, 2005), Greenland, the countries comprising Europe and Northern Central Asia, and Russia were major or moderate producers of aluminum, antimony, arsenic, asbestos, barite, bentonite boron, chromium, cobalt, copper, diamond, diatomite, feldspar, fluorspar, gemstones, gold, graphite, gypsum indium, iron ore, iron ore, kaolin, kyanite, lead, lithium, magnesium, mercury, mica (sheet), molybdenum, nickel, perlite, phosphate, platinum-group metals, potash, pumice, rare-earth metals, salt, silicon, silver, sulfur, tin, titanium, and zinc. A recurrent theme of this report is that mineral resources are associated with large-scale geologic processes that reoccur in time and space. The geologic distribution of mineral resources is intimately related to the geologic history of host rocks and structures. (APS) in Philadelphia. it contains information on some 1,750 printed maps, over 1,000 manuscript maps, 136 atlases, two globes, & one model. Murphy Smith began this project in 1985 shortly after he retired from his long career as Associate Librarian of the Society, when Librarian Edward C. Carter II named him Andrew W.
