Forecasting Wet Microbursts Associated With Summertime Airmass Thunderstorms Over the Southeastern United States
This thesis seeks to develop a technique to forecast wet microbursts using currently operational technology, including upper air soundings and WSR-88D products. The technique developed is comprised of three distinct phases. First, recognize the potential threat for given environmental conditions. Second, predict the maximum outflow velocities from microbursts using predictive equations. Third, highlight key NEXRAD radar products that demonstrate a strong potential to serve as precursors to microburst formation. Hydrology and Ground-Water Quality in the Mine Workings Within the Picher Mining District, Northeastern Oklahoma, 2002-03
The Picher mining district of northeastern Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was a major site of mining for lead and zinc ores in the first half of the 20th century. The primary source of lead and zinc were sulfide minerals disseminated in the cherty limestones and dolomites of the Boone Formation of Mississippian age, which comprises the Boone aquifer. Ground water in the aquifer and seeping to surface water in the district has been contaminated by sulfate, iron, lead, zinc, and several other metals. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, investigated hydrology and ground-water quality in the mine workings in the mining district, as part of the process to aid water managers and planners in designing remediation measures that may restore the environmental quality of the district to pre-mining conditions. Most ground-water levels underlying the mining district had similar altitudes, indicating a large degree of hydraulic connection in the mine workings and overlying aquifer materials. Recharge-age dates derived from concentrations of chlorofluorocarbons and other dissolved gases indicated that water in the Boone aquifer may flow slowly from the northeast and southeast portions of the mining district. However, recharge-age dates may have been affected by the types of sites sampled, with more recent recharge-age dates being associated with mine-shafts, which are more prone to atmospheric interactions and surface runoff than the sampled airshafts. Water levels in streams upstream from the confluence of Tar and Lytle Creeks were several feet higher than those in adjacent portions of the Boone aquifer, perhaps due to low-permeability streambed sediments and indicating the streams may be losing water to the aquifer in this area. From just upstream to downstream from the confluence of Tar and Lytle Creeks, surface-water elevations in these streams were less than those in the surrounding Boone aquifer, indicating that seepage from the aquifer to downstream portions of Tar Creek was much more likely.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Indonesia
In recognition of growing United States interest in environmental diplomacy and security as a part of U.S. foreign policy and the fact that Indonesia holds much of the world's natural resources, the purpose of this paper is to show how Indonesia's environmental problems are causing instability in the region and could lead to increased U.S. involvement in the region. The paper assesses Indonesia's environmental situation, its capabilities to handle environmental issues, and then explores environmental security issues that could cause internal and international conflict. The methodology used in researching this paper was limited to a literature review of material published primarily since 1994, on-line Internet resources, current newspapers, and radio and television news reports. The research found that the major environmental problems center on the effects of rapid urbanization, deforestation, and both marine and land pollution. While there is a well-established environmental infrastructure in place, there are still examples of both internal and international conflicts due to Indonesia's environmental problems. A 1997 forest fire in Indonesia was considered a planetary disaster and caused smoke and haze that lasted for months across Southeast Asia. The long-term implications include health problems for more than 20 million people and that threat of future legal action by neighboring countries. The geology of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park (GSMNP) region of Tennessee and North Carolina was studied from 1993 to 2003 as part of a cooperative investigation with the National Park Service (NPS). This work has been compiled as a 1:100,000-scale map derived from mapping done at 1:24,000 and 1:62,500 scale. The geologic data are intended to support cooperative investigations with NPS, the development of a new soil map by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (http: //www.discoverlifeinamerica.org/). Modeling Groundwater Flow and Contaminant Transport in Fractured Aquifers
The hybrid discrete fracture network/equivalent porous medium (DFN/EPM) model was selected for analysis and application to simulate a contaminated site in this study. The DFN/EPM was selected because it appeared to have the potential to aid decision making by remedial project managers at contaminated DoD fractured aquifer sites. This model can use data that are typically available at a site while incorporating the important processes relevant to describing contaminant transport in a fractured medium. Revision of Fossil Sequoia and Taxodium in Western North America Based on the Recent Discovery of Metasequoia
The recently discovered redwood of China, "Metasequoia glyptostroboides" Hu & Cheng, shows close relationship to two North American trees, the coast redwood, "Sequoia sempervirens" Endlicher of the western U.S., & the swamp cypress, "Taxodium distichum" Richard of the Southeastern U.S. Foliage & cones of these living trees provide characters by which the three genera may be readily distinguished. But for nearly a century there has been confusion in the recognition of fossil specimens. The author is now able to distinguish the fossil foliage & cones of all three genera, & to assign to Metasequoia many specimens which have previously been identified as Sequoia & Taxodium. Geographical Overview of the Three Gorges Dam and Reservoir, China
The Three Gorges Dam and Reservoir on the Yangtze River, China, has been an ambitious and controversial project. The dam, the largest in the world as of 2008, will provide hydropower, help to manage flood conditions, and increase the navigability of the Yangtze River. However, this massive project has displaced human and animal populations and altered the stability of the banks of the Yangtze, and it may intensify the seismic hazard of the area. It has also hindered archeological investigations in the reservoir and dam area. This report, originally in the form of a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, gives a short history and overview of the dam construction and subsequent consequences, especially geologic hazards already noted or possible in the future. Rare Earth Element Mines, Deposits, and Occurrences
Data on rare earth (including yttrium) mines, deposits, and occurrences were compiled as part of an effort by the USGS and the University of Arizona Center for Mineral Resources to summarize current knowledge on the supply and demand outlook and related topics for this group of elements. Economic competition and environmental concerns are increasingly constraining the mining and processing of rare earths from the Mountain Pass mine in California. For many years, the deposit at Mountain Pass was the world's dominant source of rare earth elements and the United States was essentially self-sufficient. Starting approximately 10 years ago, the U.S. has become increasingly dependent (> 90 percent of separated rare earths) upon imports from China, now the dominant source of rare earths. Climate Shocks and Pastoralist Migration in South Sudan
In this important, multidisciplinary, open access study, Daniel Akech Thiong shows that the relations between climate disaster, pastoralist migration, and intercommunal conflict in Africa reach farther, both in time and space, than we realize. Focusing on the climate-shock-induced migrations of the Dinka people of South Sudan's Jonglei state into the Equatoria region, Thiong investigates the long-term ecological roots of conflicts among pastoralists, or between pastoralists and agriculturalists, over access shrinking waterholes and grazing zones. In so doing, he not only offers important correctives to prevalent, short-term narratives around individual political conflicts-narratives that provide little fodder for any long-term solutions--but also sheds new light on the role of governance, both national and local, in creating or mitigating the conflicts. Thiong in fact reveals examples of unusual cooperation between diverse ethnic groups amidst climate-change-induced disasters, and these findings shed new light on similar developments elsewhere in Africa, all of which offers new lessons for those who wish to mitigate future clashes related to climate-shock-induced displacement and encourage social stability.
