The Milky Way
Our knowledge of the Milky Way has been deeply renewed since a dozen years, following the results of the astrometric satellite HIPPARCOS, and those of large stellar surveys. Many concepts thought to be well established disappeared, to be replaced by others going towards a larger complexity: in particular, the discovery of radial migrations of stars has blurred the simple image that we had of the Galactic disk. There has been large progress in some domains, for instance the physics of the Galactic Center with its super-massive black hole; other problems remain unsolved, such as the nature of the dark matter existing like a halo around our Galaxy.This book reviews our present knowledge of the Milky Way, in the simplest and most didactic way as possible. Basic notions are always recalled, which make the book accessible to readers without any advanced formation in astronomy. This basic work will be very helpful to understand the results expected from GAIA, the new ESA astrometric satellite launched on December 19, 2013.

Black holes are past stars that have been created by a gravitational collapse. They used to be called frozen stars. These cold black stars are the remnants of stars in the form of matter. Black holes are not only black, but can also radiate brightly. These gravitational singularities can therefore emit and absorb matter at the same time. Space-time in the black hole region is extremely curved and can no longer be considered flat.

It is written from the point of view of the observational astrophysicist, stressing how observations have consistently led the way in opening new horizons.We first take a brief historical look at how the Milky Way was seen until the development of large telescopes, showing how recently we have come to realize that our Galaxy is not the whole Universe but is just one of billions of similar systems. You will learn how we now measure the size of our Galaxy, and what its structure is: disc, bulge, bar, halo, streams of infalling stars as our Galaxy swallows its smaller neighbours, and the supermassive black hole at the centre.The author then zooms out to describe our local group of galaxies, including the Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds, the Andromeda galaxy, and the cloud of local dwarf galaxies.The next zoom takes you to nearby galaxy clusters, such as the Virgo cluster, and we see how galaxies are classified by their shape and structure: spirals, ellipticals, and irregulars.
